Are the newer keyboards still loose? - Asus Transformer TF701

Do the newer model keyboards still make the dock loose or commonly have that disconnection problem that I have been hearing about before with the older version?
Sent from my jflte using Tapatalk 2

Supposedly they are better now. I've heard a couple of particularly good reports regarding the 2014.04 tablets/docks.

I was not confident on getting the dock.
I probably should have and still might get it. Its probably the way to go. Especially if theres hope of running linux on this thing soon.
I dont know can run linux without a connected keyboard?
For a tight budget I got this bluetooth keyboard instead.

Plastic like not very strong and not made for "The Hulk" but itll do for now.

Just got the 2014.04 dock. No problems so far! [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]
TF701 / TF700 / NEXUS 7 (2013)

The problem is due to the dock being to wide and the connection is sloppy.
to fix, slap some thick 3M adhesive tape on the front and back. One on
the front and double thick on back worked well for me. I guess that I thickend
my tablet by about 60 thousands.

[Q] Bluetooth keyboard about the size of nook, anyone?

Now that BT finally works, I'm looking for a very thin but large keyboard or case that I can use w. my nook without adding too much bulk to it....
If you google for "samsung-galaxy-tab-bluetooth-keyboard-case-review" you'll see what I mean. I'm actually considering getting that and ripping the keyboard part out of the case, because nook definitely would not fit inside that case.
Seems to be a bit of a waste though to pay $40 for the whole deal, if I could only find who makes that keyboard part or something similar
diNovo Edge from Logitech maybe?
But I didn't even know BT had been enabled finally, what the what? Going to see about that now...
nook color bluetooth keyboard portfolio
I've been looking this morning...basically something that I could roll together with the NC and a bluetooth keyboard for conferences. A couple ideas come to the forefront:
http://shop.brando.com/samsung-galaxy-tab-case-with-bluetooth-keyboard_p05269c0299d057.html
And then some keyboards originally for the iPad, but would work nonetheless:
http://www.ipadaccessories.com/othe...rds/best-bluetooth-keyboards-for-ipad-roundup
The iGo looks decent, and I can get my hands on an Apple keyboard for cheap...but then I'm looking at having to prop up the NC and carrying along the keyboard as well. Might look into ETSY and having someone sew one together.

Yeah, A sample came out last night, and Nightly 17 is out now. Some people are reporting problems with nightly 17. (they skipped 16? because they skipped a day?)
I have the BT version installed now (not nightly 17) and it works great (the OS, I don't have any BT hardward yet.)
On the keyboard question, that keyboard is too big and way too expensive.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823115003
That's still bigger than the NC, but closer, and much cheaper.
I think I'm going to look into one of the bluetooth keyboard / pad holders though instead of making a holder.
Please notice that the Nook is about an inch longer than the galaxy tab. I learned that the hard way since I bought my Nook without a case and I live - well - let's just say on the other side of the planet. So far I haven't been able to find anything that fit the Nook.

How do you have bluetooth enabled but not flashed to CM7 Nightlie 17? Did you just install the dependencies? If so, could you post how?

They posted the pre-17 BT before they posted a build 17. It may in fact be the same file, but I haven't updated to 17 yet. I don't even have a bluetooth device yet, but I think I'm going to walmart to get a wiimote for NES action!

That is what I'm using. it's the bluetooth build 3/11/2011
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=nightly&device=encore
This is the CM7-Encore-17 which includes bluetooth. I'm unsure of the difference but they are indeed different file sizes.
About that galaxy pad keyboard:
That looks promising!! These guys are not very heavy. One could, if one were so inclined and feeling a bit hackery, cut off the leather holder for that galaxy pad and use some 3m dual lock or hook and loop velcro to connect the NC to that keyboard holder.
I think I'm just going to get a keyboard and design a stand to hold up the NC on the desk.

Theoretically speaking, would flashing over to the CM7 Nightly Kernel work for other Mods?

Apparently Samsung and Verizon/Sprint decided to lock out bluetooth on their Galaxy Tabs. Go figure.
Not our problem though.
nice find on the keyboard! looks to be just .5" wider than the NC, and a bit shorter front to back. I can picture this in a custom case that flips up and locks into a laptop-esque position
I'm thinking of either buying that Galaxy Tab one and altering it (shouldn't be too hard) or just making my own custom case with keyboard built in. It wouldn't be too hard either way, there are videos around on making a case for the nookcolor, adding a keyboard shouldn't be hard and could probably just be done with some Velcro
I definitely just purchased the Gizmo Dorks BT keyboard and case (for galaxy).. and I'm a huge xda newb so I can't post links, but I bought it from amazon for about 60 bones USD- very cheap for a keyboard and stand-up case.
I don't really care about keyboard size- maybe I'll get some mini-finger clipons for my fingers if it's too small but I think the case is a little bigger (8" long) than some of the other galaxy combo cases out there- and a guy said he fit his archos tab in it, but it should be here next week and I'll keep ya'll updated.
I've been using an apple keyboard for a few days now. It's fantastic for a few reasons.
It's a real keyboard. I type 25wpm on the soft keyboard, i doubt i could improve much on that with those little case keyboards, with mushy buttons. I do 55wpm on the apple keyboard which is pretty close to my model m desktop keyboard but more portable.
It's amazingly convenient to actually use. I use it "backwards". Throw the nook flat near me, between my arms, and reach past it to the keyboard behind it. It's even easier to use than my laptop for what it does, sometimes i even find myself preferring it over my desktop for certain tasks. The cramped netbook configuration the case keyboards lock you into makes me shudder now. I could still do the netbook configuration if i wanted too though. It's a more flexible setup, which is the point of the tablet over the laptop/netbook to begin with...
The keyboard throws in my backpack just fine, is super light, small enough not to notice. It would be the same if i used a messenger bag or whatever to carry the nook, and there is no extra bulk if i know i won't need the keyboard, i can just grab the nook by itself. Flexibility again.
It is $70 dollars which is maybe a little more than other options, but if I'm gonna get a keyboard, i want to make sure it's an upgrade over the touchscreen. $10-$20 is worth more typing speed, less fatigue and more flexibility to me.

So how is the keyboard, chisleu???
I just ordered these keyboards from amazon, they both connect and work wonderfully:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004HJEVY6
I sent it back though because the keys were too close together.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004MN1F6Y
I think I am going to keep this one!
It's keys are raised rubber and smaller, but they are spaced out so you can feel the individual keys.
The case is too small for the nookColor (since it's for the galaxy tab), but the keyboard is actually velcro-ed in, so I just removed it and I am using it in my nookColor case. (http://gifts.barnesandnoble.com/Minimal-Trifold-Cover-in-Night/e/9781616864927/?cds2Pid=36174)

7" black faux leather case w/ usb keyboard $7.15

Naturally when i first bought my N7 i wanted to put it right inside of a case to avoid damaging the tablet. I am a pretty clumsy guy, so i went right onto Amazon to look for a case suitable for the N7. I discovered this tablet case/stand and usb keyboard combination, marked down from $32.00 to $7.15. It comes with a usb keyboard, that seems a bit flimsy, but is reported to work the N7 just fine. And the N7 fits right into the case without any issues and is
very secure. The only downside is it does not come with an otg cable, but those are cheap now. The cases exterior is made of artificial leather, but it feels nice and i feel my tablet is safe inside the case. It also has a stand, and its very sturdy and it sits the tablet a good angle. I think its a good product especially for the price. Hope this helps.

The keys look a little too small for those who type very fast. But for 7 bucks, i mean its worth a shot.
Anyone try this? If so how are the keys?
Read some reviews and for the price you cannot do better. However, if its somewhat hard to type on people might be better off with the touchscreen keyboard.
Good find!!

I tried to type on the keys, just to get a feel for it, and they do seem a small, especially if your a big guy (im 6'2 200 plus). It just may take some getting used to, but as you said for the price you can't beat it.
This type of case has been posted about a few times now, it won't work with your N7, at least not without you also buying an adaptor, it has the wrong connector. The styluses are only good for the bin as they won't work either.
I had this same case on my very first tablet, it was OK... you will easily find a better case for not much more money, the keyboard worked with my old tablet just fine (need to use an adapter and you will too if you use it with the n7) it felt OK typing on it but it was better than the onscreen keyboard.
With the n7 I feel this on screen keyboard would be better than the one supplied with case
The stylus worked on that tablet but. Doubt it would on the n7 as this is a capacitative touch while my old tablet was resistive (yeah I know terrible but it was my first tablet a long time ago)
I bought a cheap 7$ case from eBay for my n7, it works, seems protective, folds to a stand but **** is it ugly! I only used it a few days and have been using my tablet naked form then on, still in the market for a nice case, maybe in the 15-30$ range if anyone has any recommendations

I bought one of these cases with the built-in keyboard:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/370569042688
and one of these OTG adapters:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261063649106
and together they work fine on my N7. The keys are on the small side but they're not terrible. If I ever have the inclination to do more than a little typing on my tablet then it would be quite satisfactory.
I don't understand why the need for an OTG cable. Any micro adapter will do. Or just buy a keyboard with a microusb cable in it already. The only problem that I didn't expect (size was a given) was that the usb cables on these cheap keyboards are waaay to thin and break easily. My suggestion is to get a bluetooth keyboard for another twenty bucks. That is until I find out that they also have some manufacturing problem.

problem would be battery life for the tablet and the keyboard, seems to use a lot more than just usb. and you can get keyboards of higher quality and the proper port, they are just more expensive than I'm willing to pay

Combo Keyboard + Cases That Work

I was surprised to not find an active thread on Case/Keyboard combos. I would sure like to hear from others as to the ones you have tried and your findings. I have only tried one thus far and rejected it: it is the IVSO usb combo http://www.amazon.com/Leather-Keybo...464&sr=1-3&keywords=usb+keyboard+case+nexus+7 .
This one was not terrible: the keyboard actually worked fine - I had no loose keys etc and of course no need to switch on bluetooth. The retention method is odd - it uses three mechanical clips to hold the Nexus 7 in place. Unfortunately the unit I received was defective in this regard as the bottom right clip was loose so the nexus 7 weight would cause it to slip and sag. That aside, the 'stand' position worked fine - when typing on the keys it didn't wobble much - actually held its posture ok. The USB plug is a poor match for the rig because the shaft/sleeve of the connector is long for the dimensions of the case, so when plugged in it protrudes a MM or two from the plane of the case. The material of the case and stitching were not handsome - the design is function-driven to put it politely. Shipped it back as defective.
I've read a lot of reviews of several of the other cases and all seem to have mild-to-serious issues but I should like to hear your experience, especially if someone has found one that is terrific.
I have been wondering also if there might be a lucky way to use a larger case/keyboard combo not really made for this unit, for the sake of gaining a tad more room for the keys - maybe one for the ipad mini? We have a mini and picked up an Anker BT-keyboard for it - that keyboard works fine with the Nexus 7 as well as the mini and has a little more room, but for the footprint of the kb, it could have been designed for a better touch-type experience without increasing the size, in my opinion. Its pretty easy to mis-key
Check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943275
I have been using it for a couple weeks and would probably give it a 3.5 out of 5. I tried the IVSO and wasn't impressed either.
The pros with the Minisuit Bluetooth
No extra wires
Sync is easy
Compact
Functions as a case
Sturdy (but not aluminum, some were advertised that way)
Not much lag
The cons
I can't seem to get autocorrect to work
You can really only use in landscape (mine topples over when I try portrait)
I think over time the clips might scratch the bezel on my Nexus (I consider this minor)
Overall, it is nice. You can't touch type, but I didn't expect too on a 7 inch keyboard.
goodluck

[Q] TF701 infinty insecure dock

Hi, I read with interest the posts about wobbly (back and forth) docks on the tf101.
My TF700T developed this also after just 1 month.
Aditionally and more seriously perhaps, I noticed it stopped docking securely. I examined both the dock and the tablet and eventually noticed the retaining pin (inside the hole) on the right side of the tablet seems to have broken off due to frequently docking and undocking the two.
Has anyone else seen this?
ive sent it back to Asus who are claiming customer induced damage. This make me very angry bcoz i looked after it like a baby. all i did was use it a lot both docked and undocked.it never left my house. I reckon its a design flaw and eventually all many more of you will notice this.
I have not had this issue after 18+ months of use on my TF101
You may want to ask in the TF700 forum for feedback on that model.
I just started to notice the same thing after 6 months but it's barely noticeable. Also the tf101 was their "affordable / low-end" model so it's to be expected. I would contact them for a replacement.

Mine is the top end 64GB Transformer Infinity. As you say its barely noticeable. However it is insecure and if you combine the fault with the hinge that allows it to rotate too easily under the weigth of a tilted tablet, with the more serious issue of snapped docking pins then I would say there is potential for the two to separate and the tablet to fall and smash!
There IS a problem with the quality control of the docks. Some people have no problems. Some are wobbly. Some, like mine, will not move at all. My TF700/201 dock was so stiff when it arrived that i could see the tablet beginning to flex when trying to close it but the dock was not rotating at all. After un-docking the tablet I couldn't even rotate the docking clamp with my bare hand. Not being one to waste time or money sending things off or trying to return them, I opened up the tablet myself and fixed the problem.
This Transformer Prime video shows you how to take it apart. It's not very difficult.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwAypkC26Cc
I doubt that anything major with the design has changed for the TF701 dock since the TF700 dock was a re-branded TF201 dock.
Skip to 10:54 in the video and note the two large silver mounting brackets for the dock with 3 screws each holding them down and the silver nuts at the end of the shaft which the docking clamp rotates on.
To adjust the tension on the dock you need to turn the nuts on the ends of the shaft. They provide tension on the docking clamp.
Depending on the tools you have available it will most likely be easier to loosen the three mounting screws on both sides so that you can create a little more room by lifting the docking mechanism up away from the back of the casing to get a good grip on the nuts. I would recommend not taking the screws all the way out of the clamps. That being said, don't try to turn the nuts forcefully without a firm grip on the docking clamp. Just pay attention to whats going on so as not to create another problem whilst fixing this one.
Remember to set both sides as evenly as possible so you're not torquing the face of the tablet with the docking clamp when you close the tablet. I loosened both of mine up and then slowly tightened them until the resistance felt the same. Without the tablet in there it will be very apparent when one side is tighter than the other.
After adjusting the tension, re-tighten the mounting bracket screws on both sides. You can dock the tablet and check to see if you've removed the wobble or lack thereof without putting the keyboard back on.
Once the dock tension is set to your liking you may also want to tape down some coins or washers inside the front of the dock if you have problems with the docked tablet tipping over backwards when set on an incline or with the screen tilted back just to avoid taking the dock apart again later.

Upgrading from TF201, few questions

Hi, it's about time for me to do an upgrade, my TF Prime is dying, just random lags and can't handle most new apps well anymore. Was looking at Google Nexus 10 and others including Win8 tablets, but deciding to perhaps give TF series another try. A few questions for people that updated from TF201 (or early devices) to TF701:
1. The speaker, is it louder on TF701, the same, or softer?
2. The headphone jack: is it improved in terms of how tight it holds the connector? The TF201 headphone jack is so loose it always falls out
3. Is it thicker or thinner than the TF201? And weight?
4. Does the device slow after a considerable amount of use? I was really happy with my TF201 initially but it's been slowing like crazy these days
5. Docking issues: seems to be the most talked about one here, is it still a big problem, or does new shipments fix it?
Much thanks in advance.

1. Probably little louder
2. It is ok
3. Thinner I think (compare the specs on Asus website)
4. No
5. New shipments with production month 2013.11 or later must be ok. We are wating for confirmation about this from users.

One change that you did not mention is the microSD card slot. It's much improved in the 700 and 701. Previously on the 100 and 201 models, an inserted microSD card would protrude by a few millimeters, making it susceptible to to being bumped and accidentally ejected (and lost!). On the more recent devices with the new and improved iteration of the slot, microSD cards are now completely flush with the shell. Accidental ejection is now all but impossible.

Thanks! Yes when I saw the 2GB RAM I was much relieved, they should've done that for the Prime... good to hear.
Too bad they had to sacrifice the weight and thinness for the power though.
But I think I'm still positive about this machine, just need to hear even more about the dock. I guess in the worst case I can always just RMA it. Is there a possibility that they won't let me exchange for a better dock?

I don't know exactly what do you mean by lateral flex. Tablet is somewhat loose in the hinge, but that seems to be design, and it 'works' same way as i saw in some videos. I can lift tablet few degrees from closed position before hinge on the dock starts to rotate. If you mean if it twists in the hinge along axis, then only little bit, and it is because of loose nature of the hinge. If you mean something completely different then please make me some very basic diagram or something, I'll try.
However, i discovered some very strange phenomenon with this tablet. It maybe well known effect, but i see it for the first time and it is somewhat hard to describe.
Before, i had only TF101 and it has plastic back. This model has brushed aluminum back. When i trace my finger on the metal surface of tablet's back, i feel subtle... resonance, rumble (?) in my fingertip. Not sure how to describe it. It only occurs when tablet is in the dock and charging from charger, and i have to move fingertip over surface, simply touching surface is not working. I really hope this thing is not possessed.

Unfortunately sounds like Asus haven't fixed the loose hinge on the 11 models then.
The resonance is because the device is not earthed. Happens on metal laptops as well as on my TF201 and TF700 as well. Not much you can do about it

yes it is loose, but it wont loose contact with the dock, and it sounds worse than it really is. but i guess it's a matter of personal opinion.
anyway, thanks for 'resonance' explanation, going to cancel exorcist now

Haha yes, that was the case for TF201 too and I guess with all the brushed aluminum spin finish products. The first time I felt it I thought my tablet was vibrating non-stop, so I got a bit worried. Its' a strange feeling
I was also wondering, with the updated specs (esp. improved WIFI and 2GB RAM), is the browsing experience much improved now? Is it comparable to other major tablets like Nexus 7, iPad Air and Surface 2? Because that's one of the major let down for me on the TF201, browsing experience is simply awful especially after a long time usage, the 1GB RAM and crappy Wifi just won't do, no matter what browser I use.

Yes it is however you can easily fix that on the TF201 with CROMi-X which uses browser to ROM. My prime runs faster than the browser here with browser to ram installed.
