I wouldn't hold my breath for any custom ROM's - Galaxy Tab S General

For those who are waiting for custom ROM's for the Tab S (WiFi) you maybe disappointed. From my experience with the Tab Pro (WiFi) there are no custom ROM's for the Exynos SOC. I am hoping someone can prove me wrong.

There are a number of roms for the 10.1 Pro which has the Exynos does it not? They may be TouchWiz based but still debloated and faster.

I guess you're right. For me those modified stock ROM'S never provided enough benefit to make me root my tablet to install. By custom ROM'S I mean ROM'S that include such things as tweaked kernels, ie, Cyanogen Mod.

The reason there was little development for the 10.1 Pro wasn't Exynos, it was because no one bought it. N10.1-14's with S Pen could be had as refurbs for $350 and even at retail they were close to the same price. After the N10.1-14 received 4.4 the only thing missing compared to the Pro was M-UX and to some that was a good thing. The N10.1-14's dev community if fairly decent for a tablet. Samsung's going to sink gazillions of marketing dollars in to the S' and with their AMOLED displays they finally have a distinguishing feature. Whether officially or via neglect the 8.4/10.1 Pro's are dead with the equivalent S' replacing them.
Everyone's claiming confusion about Samsung's tablet line but it's actually pretty clear. Entry level = Tab 4's, premium devices = the S', and productivity/creation devices = the Note's. The non-Note Pro's were apparently just a stop gap until the S' were ready.
Regardless, comparing development for the S' to the 10.1 Pro's is apples and oranges.

Hey BarryH, long time no see. Yep, there will be plenty of development for the 10.5 S as it is likely to be very popular.

Hey there. For once I'm not lusting after the next "shiny" thing on the horizon; for both my phone and tablet. I have a N10.1-14 that I love and its replaced my laptop 50% of the time. Next time I'm in Latin America I'm going to replace my 3G with a 4G version sold there that works on AT&T. All Samsung's newer high-end tablets are really the same with some s/w and h/w tweaks. With the exception of the Tab S' AMOLED display and finger print reader mostly the former. UI wise, with the exception of M-UX being omitted, Samsung brought the N10.1-14 up to "Pro" level with the 4.4 update. If I didn't use S Note/S Pen and was a consumption user I'd be all over the Tab S. Both for its display and color. Who could resist Titanium Bronze? Hope you enjoy yours.

Up to individual taste. For me CM is just too bland a interface, I actually like TW and have "cooked" a few ROMs in the past. They are actually "custom" as modified from Samsung, so is CM, modified from Google is "custom"........but each to their own.
Devices running TW firmware do actually have "tweaked kernels", such as my Note 3 is running my own SkyHigh kernel built from official Samsung sources.
When I get my hands on a 8.4 LTE model, that's exactly what I'll be doing too !

Its not a TW issue. I think Samsung devices with Snapdragon SoC have the fully custom ROMs. Devices with the Exynos CPU's usually don't.

When it comes to roms there is one thing I look for. Speed. Unless they go crazy with colors, theming or silly fonts I don't care much how it looks since I use a launcher anyway. Although I enjoy CM I miss the Samsung features such as split screen.

I would make Alliance rom for the tab s just need to afford one lol ?

Is the Galaxy Tab a good investment community-wise ?

Hello,
I joined the xda community about a year ago, first with my Htc Magic, then with my HD2. I have the opportunity to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab from some carrier for little extra money of my current Internet plan. And for 10 €/month more, I could get the new 10.1 version...
Although I do know that logically I should choose the 10.1, I still consider the 7'. Why ? Well, it would be cheaper at first. Then, I like the 7' size more and I'm not sure I would need Dual-Core processor for Internet surfing ! Also, the 10' model's phone app is blocked by the carrier, while it's not for the 7'...
But I digress !
Before to sign up to the plan, I'd like to take the pulse of the community. It's something I always do prior to purchasing a new device. I'm use to the HD2 orgy of Roms and OS and I must say that the less-furnished Development section for the Tab leaves me thinking. I don't doubt of the quaility of the ROMS but I wonder if devs are not already leaving the Tab's development for more recent Tablets and devices.
So...If you are a serial flasher like me, is the Tab a good invesmet ? I'd love to flash later CyanogenMod releases when there will be actual Tablet versions of it (for the moment, CM7 on a tablet is still in its early months) and of course Honeycomb or even better, Ice Cream Sandwhich. Will there be dev's at that moment ? Of course, I know it's not an easy question to answer but it's more about the community strengh until today actually...
Thanks and see you soon hopefully !
cm7 + tablet tweaks = win.
with roms, ill take quality over quantity, even tho there are only 3 2.3 roms, they are all badass.
the tab7 has been the best tech device ive ever owned, i have an ipad but it lives in the draw, its just way to big todo anything with other than using it in bed or on the toilet.
I suggest get the 7inch or wait for the new 7inch (who knows when that will come)
the only negative i have is that theres so many new devices out with dual core ect... but so far it hasnt stopped me from doing anything that these newer devices can do (you can play tegra games via chainfire) but eventually it will become an issue i guess.
The carrier matters.
More dev work is being done for the GSM variants at the moment. But spacemoose1 does have an alpha hc rom and dev continues in that.
Thank you for your anwser and I do agree about quality over quantity...
I'm aware of tablet tweaks from CM7, I already used them on my 4'3 HD2 screen but that not much in comparison of the many tweaks TouchWiz seems to bring to the Android 2.2 UI. Of course, overlay means slower device but oh well...
Is it possible to easily save/back up the stock Android Rom it will be shipped with in order to restore if I need to return it under warranty ?
Thanks !

Considering the Note; problems?

I'm considering a move to the Note from my SGS2 (which would go to my wife to replace her aging Captivate).
Searching either returned to varied results, or nothing. The Wiki didn't seem to cover these specific questions.
The features and whatnot all look great to me, but my question is regarding some of the issues I've seen mentioned lately. An EMMC brick, screen problems, etc.
What known issues are there?
How severe are they?
Do they affect newer batches of the device?
Thanks for any info you can provide.

As my sister uses the glaxy note, what I can say is that there has been almost no complaints yet. The screen is good , it rarely appears pixelated but is oversaturated. About the bricks, I believe that it was notes for a specific time frame but is fixed now.... Unlukily I completely forgot where I read that ..
Hope your questions got awnsered!

The eMMC bug is still present, Apparently samsung are working on a fix, But there is no timeframe as to when it will be released.
Its a serious matter, But if you follow the instructions you will be fine, Just avoid doing a full wipe on a stock ICS kernel, Simple as that, Get the phone, Flash a KNOWN Safe kernel and job done :good:
Your note might come with GB not ICS, If this is the case, You can just stick with it until the eMMC bug is fixed, GB on the Note is very nice and very smooth, I upgraded to ICS via ODIN and havent seen a massive improvement, Only a few minor tweaks and such.
The screen issues dont affect everyone, Only a small number of users, However there have been a few tips and tricks to help eradicate it.
All in all i'd say its an awesome device, Id highly recommend you go for it.
Thank you both for the quick, encouraging words. Sounds like it's just crapshoot for screen issues then, which is normal for everything. I'll both the phone once to make sure it works, then I'll have AOKP on it before it can take another breath
Or wait and buy the note 2

ive had the galaxy note for quite some time now and i must say that is an awesome device. There have been some problems such as dead pixels on the screen but as long as you buy it from an authorized samsung retailer then it should be fine as warranty will cover any hardware problem as long as it is not damaged by use. eMMC brickbug problem plauges the exynos based phones including the Galaxy Note but as said in the previous post most likely your galaxy note will come with Gingerbread out of the box and until samsung come up with a fix for that problem you can stick to GB. However even if you have ICS out of the box as long as you stay away from wiping/factory resetting and flashing any roms then your device will be ok. (Personally my galaxy note had the eMMC bug and after a wipe it had to be repaired. But since i had valid warranty i got it repaired free of charge from Samsung Service Center)
Other than that there is nothing to complain about. The screen is just great. The HD resolution combined with the big screen make it awesome for media shuch as movies and games. You also have the S-Pen to play around with. All in all it is an awesome device. If you want me to cover anything in particular, then i can make a quick youtube video, as i have a Galaxy note at my disposal.

With you there, but if the Note 2 ends up being worthwhile to me, which I expect it will, I'll grab one and pass the Note 1 I'm considering to my wife. We have an understanding. I get first dibbs on phones, she gets first dibbs on laptops.
I have had my note for a little over a month now and the only problem I JUST realized with this device is the Samsung touchwiz ui. I know some people like the touchwiz ui but try using a pure google aosp rom and you will get the idea of what I mean. I'm currently using liquid smooth rom(less than 24 hours in) ad I'm absolutely LOVING the pure aosp ice cream sandwich ui!

I agree with you that the stock touchwiz ui rom that comes out of the box is not the fastest and quite often lags. Instead i recommend using a faster launcher like: Nova Launcher OR Apex Launcher which are miles better and faster than the stock launcher. They are way smoother and can offer quite some customization and personalisation.

Yes the eMMc affects new batches. If you get a new device and it has GB 2.3.6 pre-loaded, dont update to ICS 4.0.3 just yet. Other issues, pink spot on the camera under certain light conditions. Seems to be a batch issue, and I think it still affects new units. Search on youtube for examples. The S2 is the same, but you already have an S2, so it is comparable to the 'Note. I think the SGN is fine, most issues surround the ICS update, hence my advice of holding off of any update if you get one with GB. Is it possible for you to check before you buy? If your into rooting and flashing, have a good read on the forums, much has been written. If, like me you run it as a standard factory install, a gingerbread 'Note is wonderful.
Dude check for black clipping...there on my note big time..hate it..what's the point of a so called HD screen when no dark video is watchable..other than that it is hands down the best device..
I've just ordered my Galaxy Note and received it recently, but I was planning to wait for the Galaxy Note 2 but considering it would have just quad core and a bigger screen (the Note's one already neded some getting used to for me xD) I thought I'd just stick with the Note. That and getting it at a good price
Also, I've asked a few questions, and the helpful guys here answered it about the differences upgrading the ICS from GB, I think it might help

Don't underestimate the Note 2. It is more likely to have the following specs:
5.4" or 5.5" screen
Better build quality(maybe less plastic and more screen to make device smaller)
WSXGA+ screen 1680x1050 resolution
4G LTE built in all model
NFC built in all models
The exynos 5250 dual core cortex a15 based processor(faster than current exynos 4212)
Much better GPU
Possible RAM Increase
Better version of SPen

Development Progress?

When is development for the device going to pick up? There's not much out there! I know it just came out but I expected more. I installed the Sky high Kernel after I rooted and I really like it. I have my A15 cores overclocked to 2.1GHz and have all cores undervolted, as well as overclocked the GPU and the device is totally stable!! My only issue with root/SkyHigh kernel (not sure which is the issue) is that my screen mirroring does not work. It will try to connect and say hardware issue. Anyways, everyone just post your thoughts, opinions and such about the device and development. I'd love to hear ideas and info out there. This device is AmAzInG!
Yep the 8.4 got a kernel but nary a peep on any rom activity. I think the problem is that most developers that wanted a high res tab like this already bought the Pro model and are not upgrading to the S.
I'm waiting on someone to port CM over so I can go pure Android and get rid of this excessive Touchwiz javascript lag on pageloads. For that I'd happily give up the gimmicky stuff like split screen that I rarely use anyway.

I'm just waiting on a deodexed ROM for T700. Then I'll start theming.

[Q] 64 Bit Tab S

The question: Which is the best option (conjecture):
a) CM11 on a Tab S SM-T800 (Exynos 5420)
b) Touchwiz on a Tab S (Exynos 7 Octa 64bit) -unreleased
c) Touchwiz on a Tab S (Exynos 5433 32-bit locked) -unreleased
Links:
[REDACTED] - I can't give you links since I've not enough posts yet.. google "Tab S 5433" and you'll find some links to the new stuff I'm talking about, news broke around Oct 2.
details:
Since I live in Seoul, I'll be able to pick up one of these new bad boys if/when it's released. However, that would mean returning the T800 I've just ordered as soon as it arrives; I only bought it because of Suzook, Nvertigo67, and Baracudda77777's efforts to port over CM11, but I'm guessing the re-released Tab S won't be compatible with their Rom.
The articles seem to suggest that the re-release tablet will have the 5433 (now renamed the Exynos 7 Octa) but it's possible that it will be 'locked' into 32 bit mode.. not really sure if that means forever or until they update touchwiz to Android 5.0.
Just don't want any lag.. what would you do?

Not sure if it would make a difference at all so I put the question out there. Perhaps future proofing to some extent?
The new chip is touted to be ~50% faster (and easier on the battery) but if CM11 runs perfectly smooth on a T800 already then I guess I don't see much pointed in going faster than perfectly fast
Well I read about it only being released in korea/parts of asia. Not sure yet on when it will be in the u.s. Doesnt matter really since its just changing chipsets for better improvement of performance. But nothing was mentioned about battery life. The tab s i have now has great battery life since im rooted and debloat some apps. And I dont really need a faster tablet since this is just fine for me. So battery could possibly be an issue in the new tab s is what im asking.

The problem with the lag in current models is touchwiz thats causing it. Until you change launchers, theres no lag. Unless you wont care of haveing root a couple weeks of whe the new tab s comes out go for it. Just make sure you check if the battery lasts as long asadvertised. There have been reports of bad batteries in some tab s models right now. I wonder if there will be much development for the new tab s.

What's up with development for this phone?

Now, don't get the wrong idea. I'm not asking or demanding for ROMs or what have you. More like where are the developers. Are people not digging this phone and refusing to move over to it? Or is this thing off to a really slow start?
Again, I'm not asking for ETA, ROMs, mods, anything of that sort. Just wondering what the state of the g920t is in the developer realm.
If there is anything I would LOVE an ETA for or any information on for that matter is Cyanogenmod 12 lol I'm a CM head. Ran it exclusively on my S4 so I feel very out of place being stuck on Touchwiz. Although I must admit it's grown on me and is worlds better than past versions.

The development on the aosp side of things has been really quiet, probably because they don't want to get peoples' hopes up. If you bought this device expecting to get cm12, it might not be a realistic expectation

Completely understandable. And yea I did buy this phone expecting CM12. I've owned every Galaxy S phone except the 3 and 5 and had CM on every one of them. What I didn't know was the dislike for Exynos that exists among developers.
Hopefully this will change but you know what, Touchwiz is good enough to hold me over If nothing happens by the time jump comes back around I'll most likely drop this phone and jump over to the HTC One. Yes I love AOSP that much lol If it weren't for the Nexus 6 being so damn huge i'd be on that right now.

It's because exynos isn't open source, which gives the developers nothing to go on so they have to reverse engineer everything. It's not about hate, it's about documentation
waiting on root for 5.1.1 tw first

If you were surprised about the lack of Exynos dev support, then you obviously did not do your homework before buying. Yes, there have been prior Exynos devices that (eventually) got CM, but it took many months of hard work and reverse engineering. You should never EVER buy a Samsung device with the expectation of having CM on it later (especially if it has Exynos). Die hard CM fans should stick with Nexus because those devices will always be the first to get CM. If you can't stand Touchwiz or any of the TW-based custom roms that are available, then you might as well sell your S6 now while you can get the most money for it.
The new Nexus coming out in November looks promising. Suppose to come in 2 sizes by 2 different makesr, one size I'm interested in is the smaller 5.4" model. I'll keep this S6 till then and Jump when the Nexus 5 2015 is available.

Being a CM fan too, i think this device has a lot of potential with touchwiz based rom. Many contributors are working hard to bring fixes where samsung failed to deliver!

Same here. I was planning to get the OnePlus Two, but not if it has SD810. I'll wait for a small Nexus.

Yes I made this clear above. I've never owned an Exynos device, so I made the leap assuming it would have CM support just like every other Galaxy S I've owned. Also I am a die hard AOSP fan but I've always preferred Galaxy S features like SAMOLED and external SD so I've always gotten a GS and called it a day. As I said earlier, the Nexus 6 is just too large so that's out of the question.

NO. I despise LG. I used to own a G2x. Never trusted LG after that mess.

I can understand your hesitation after the G2x but LG has come a long way. They still have a horrid UI but that's why we have custom ROMs. They still have snapdragon, as well. Not to mention some amazing hardware. Right up there with any other manufacturer (yes even considering their plastic back version...who doesn't use a case anyway) That all being said...I'm still getting the next Nexus lol LG and Sammy have some incredible features that aren't available in CM but stock Android is just too smooth

Also unless something changed there isn't a "safe" way to root the g4.

The only change is LG released unlock bootloader tool for int'l non-carrier versions only.
So given that, i think we are on the best option (and i'm saying that coming from a Note 4)
I think there are Fans who just like CM or AOSP because of the look and feel aspect of stock. I can understand, but as stated in a number of statements here, there are some awesome aspects and hardware features with stock TW that will indeed be lost CM or AOSP - Big example are camara features to name one.
Now if you follow the theme section you will see there is a way to get stock material look - now mix it with Nova launcher you are GOLDEN..it will hold me over...
