[Q] Xperia Z overheats - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, I managed to buy a problematic Xperia Z at a really cheap price, and I sent it in for repair. (The LCD backlight fuse on the motherboard went out)
Well a few weeks later the technician calls me up and tell me that he managed to fix the backlight problem, but now he tells me that the motherboard heats up quite a bit.
Now the thing is that during repair, he managed to lose the metal covering shield that sits over the processor.
Do you think the loss of this small metal cover is the reason why this phone overheats?
Now I haven't actually Used this phone before, so I cant really say how badly this phone overheats, or if this is a regular issue among Xperia Z's.
(I used to have a Nexus 4 before that seriously heated up to maybe above 50-56 degrees when I played any intensive games. I wonder is the xperia Z like that? )
If he does not find that metal covering, do you think I could use some non conductive thermal paste between the Processor of the phone and glass back to dissipate the heat?
I'm going tomorrow to check out the phone.
Any answers would be highly appreciated!

The heat sink is there for a reason and I think it's really important for the XZ, because even with the heat sink the phone can become really hot.
If you could unlock the bootloader, you could down clock+voltage the processor and GPU to prevent it from becoming to hot. I'm not sure if thermal paste will work. It will help for sure, but I'm not sure if the paste will stay at the same spot over time, if it doesn't you'll only be extending the problem.
He could try applying the thermal paste and putting a thin metal plate over the paste. That way the plate can keep the paste together.

[Q] Xperia Z design quality

Hi guys! I am really into buying Xperia ZL eversince it was announced but I am slowly considering getting the Xperia Z instead. But there's just 1 thing in my mind that's confusing me in shifting to Z from ZL and it's about how they design the phone.
1. It's whole body is tempered glass. Yes it's luxurious indeed.
2. It's thin. I like that one too although I prefer bulky phones.
3. It's water and dust resistant. Great feature indeed this should shut the tech support of sony repair center into saying that "Sorry you phone is water damaged it's not within our warranty".
But issue is with those 3 advantages comes 1 big advantage.
How will it be able to withstand heat? No I'm not talking about fire resistance but heat from the processor and battery. All of you already are aware that using extensive resources like video playback, browsing, games etc. uses too much power and causes a phone to heat up but seeing a tempered glass body(good conductor of heat) + slim build + a body with no holes where air could pass wouldn't the phone get overheat? Or at least wouldn't it be too hot to touch?
Some of you who owned a Nokia N82 on the past should understand what I am saying.
trust me they are not going to release a phone that gets to hot to touch thats just a lawsuit waiting to happen....the nexus 4 is all glass as well and is just fine. every phone gets hot but trust me it will be just fine

I understand where You are coming from it probably has a built in shut down if it gets to hot... then again maybe the glass acts as a coolant and conducts cool air... I dunno we shall see though... I know the nexus 4 has been known to crack from heating then getting to cool to fast like putting it on a cold surface after it warms up.... we shall see though

What I meant too hot to touch is that it's warm enough to the point that it's already uncomfortable to hold. Also nexus 4 is a millimeter thick than Xperia Z that's a big factor in heat. Plus I did point out 3 factors in heating and nexus 4 only has 1.

I would rather have portable heater with smartphone features than a smartphone that shuts off everytime lol!
Also glass can't be coolants it would defy the logic of nature
And yeah nexus 4 do encounter overheating issues too.
I just wish Xperia ZL was water resistant. The curve design on the back is a great way to reduce heat produced by the phone + the plastic material which reduces it also.
When it gets hot pour water on it LOL... I don't think it will be that big of a problem.

Lol! Then in no time you'll end up cracking your phone. Or worse is end up having moisture inside the phone... The phone maybe water resistant but a sudden change in temperature could create moisture from the air inside the phone.
I think the best way out of this is by puting the Z in a protecting case.

Well i guess that could could happen if you put it in ice cold water
I don't think i could ever put a case on that lovely back.
Am I the only one who thinks the bottom border on the front of the Z is a little too thick? It should be like the ZL imo.

They need space to put the electronics you know The Xperia ZL is fatter so they can make the battery more compact, leaving more room for everything else behind the display. Also, part of the OmniBalance design is that the bezel is the same size on the top and bottom.
there is one thing which you guys are missing here
It is important to notice that apq8064 original factory clock is 1.7GHZ however sony take care about that by reducing the speed in to 1.5ghz:silly: so the cpu is under volt that means no overheat issue at least in locked boot loader :0
Unless you play games and keep the phone in the the (new coolant) icy Pepsi joking

APQ8064 officially has between 1.5GHz - 1.7GHz CPU speeds with release, the manufacturers can choose which speed they want in the kernel
Easy to change once kernel source is out

it does not matter, but lower the frequency smaller heat output? especially while the case is water resistant so no air circulation

I underclock my phones up to a minimum of 900mhz(it's a dual core msm8x60 processor) and still when watching videos, browsing the web and playing games(Like angry birds) for a minimum of 40minutes then the phone get's hotter already. This might not be the case for S4 processors since they have lower nanometer(nm) but still I'm pretty sure it would still get hot.
Regarding no air circulation... That's one of the main causes of overheating since the heat would be more stagnant. The more flow of air inside the phone the lesser it is to likely overheat.

[Q] Xperia Z - muffled sound - YES, I know it needs to dry

Hi all,
My Xperia has not been in water since 4 days ago, but my sound is still muffled.
It got a bit better over the last few days, but it is still pretty bad.
I tried everything, a stream of water (and drying it!), laying it in rice, salt...
Even using a hoover like in one video on youtube.
I still have my warranty, so taking it to get repaired is an option, but I would prefer if there is a way to clean it. I don't believe that the guys can repair the phone in such way that I could be waterproof again and I doubt that I will get a new phone if I bring this one in.
For you to get an idea how bad it is, I recorded a video with my TF101 and I measured the loudness using a Samsung Galaxy Mini and Sound Meter from the Play Store.

Fail. Anything suggested from this point forth is pointless imo as you may have seriously damaged your speaker, so would just get it straight to a Service Centre.

True. But never rule out that the climate might not be appropriate for drying it, but yeah, anything besides letting it dry on it's own and rebooting that you listed (besides the rice which seems.... odd....) will actually damage the speaker. I live in AU where it's fairly dry and all i have to do after my phone's been submerged for 10-20 mins is let it dry. personally, i play games that'll strain the phone to heat the internals up, usually helps it dry faster. Otherwise try a hairdryer on low to heat up the phone physically.
To make things clear, the hoover was not on full power. It was not even on 30%. I used it to get maybe some lint or dust out, not to dry it off. Also tried the hairdryer on slow speed and medium temperature, but it didnt help.

my phone had the same fault.
Sony (Sbe Ltd repair centre) couldnt fix it so they sent me a replacement
...which ive just received back covered in scuffs, scratches and with dirt surrounding most of the screen.
****ing ridiculous. Sorry, but it's stupid.
edit: mine was without any water contact at all... so maybe different fault

Are the design flaws on Z fixed on Z1?

Hi all
I'm considering changing from Z to Z1. Xperia Z have some design flaws, The biggest one is heat issue. The heat itself is OK but it will continuously melt back glass glue little by little, then the phone will start to leak, so dust and water will get in. Is this problem fixed on Z1?
Another big design flaw on Z is headphone and charging port caps are easily worned out. Magnetic charger and cap free headphone jack would be good.
The only I find getting on my nerves is design flaw is the non scratch proof shatter resistance film on top of shatter resistant dragontrail glass on screen. I know this can be sorted out with a screen protector but I'm no pro when it comes to that and I always have bubbles some where on the screen

bull****! (with all do respect!)
glue of xperia Z melt by phone heat !?!?!
it is funny!
40-60 degree of C can melt just ice! not that powerful glue on xperia devices.
(however Cnet test it under HOT chocolate and nothing happened! and also a Japanese lady put it in hot water!)
one more thing;
for example that glue start melting when it warm up
but after that it becomes cool, from 60C to 30C and it means glue will return to their standard condition. cause glue are elastic!
i had Xperia Z for 8-9 months for heavy gaming and it means almost of time hot.
nothing happened.
anyway if u wanna buy new phone w8 for MWC and then decide wht to buy
:good:

Unfortunately, it really happens.
But you will never notice this flaw until you see dust in the camera or you put it in the water. You will see these issues on Z forum for sure.

Cooling the Xperia Z using cold water when it gets hot.

I multitask alot with my beloved Xperia Z and sometimes it gets hot but i ignore it and it finds a way to cool down while i still use it.
My question is if its ok to drop it in cooled water when it gets hot OR is the temperature difference shift is to big that its not so healthy for the Xperia Z?
...and to get this out of the way for people who are againt the water proof use...i had my purple Xperia Z for 8 months, i wash it every few days with soap and water, i use it ALL the time in the pool and underwater and basically im VERY confident in its waterproof capabilities SO lets stay on topic please.
Thanks for your help and opinions in advance
Sent from my beautiful purple friend Xperia Z.
well i guess it would be ok , isn't it ? it is not like he will do a hypothermic shock like the human body , i guess
yes the phone is waterproof yet it is very easy to crack , my gf droped my phone from like 1m and broke the whole back , happily the camera survived
Well you might end up with a broken back glass if you keep doing it.I havent experienced it firsthand but its easy to imagine...
No brother dont do that.yes our xz can be so hot sometimes just stop for a while if you think your phone is gonna melt.
Sent from my Xperia Yuga
Usually when you put hot glass on cold water the temperature change breaks the glass and our xperia Z is made of glass xD so maybe breaks, maybe not. I'm not sure if the temperature is too hot to create the conditions to break the glass.
according to software : when phone reaches high temp levels , the cpu clock and gpu and brightness level get decreased a little every temp level , so u going to reach a level the phone will start cooling it self as u mentioned , so u don't need to put it in cold water
if u pot hot glass in cold water , the glass will get broken , so careful , don't put your phone in danger just to win couple of mins of cooling
And take in mind the condenced water phenominon when switching in tempetures
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
I have not taken into consideration the glass.... yes you're right the glass may break if the temperature difference is too big from hot to cold.
Considering i removed the back and front shaterproof films, i dont want the glass to crack! Haha ...saying that though, i must say im VERY confident in the Xperia Z durability as well. I drop it alot and nothing happens beside the corners that got some paint scratches
Remember that the front and back glass is a bit deeper than the frame so even when it falls straight down, the frame absorbs the hit when it touches the ground.
Back to topic...
I had this idea to create water cooling for our Xperia Z but besides putting it inside a clear container (like a cup or a bawl) with cooled water and then use a bluetooth mouse, i dont see how this waterproof advantage can be used for cooling.

Aluminium back cover

Hello everyone, thanks for checking out my thread :good:
As you all know, our beloved Xperia Z4 tend to heat up when doing some "intensive" work. Sure, I can live with the phone closing YouTube when it gets too hot, but the Camera app closes after taking a Full HD video for two minutes. It's quite frustrating, especially when recording a concert. That's two minutes of video and 6 minutes of cooldown.
On the other side, I just replaced my rear camera after it died from a drop. The technician glued the back cover, but I noticed that the glue was a mess and the back cover wasn't aligned properly, causing the left side of the panel to sink in. I asked other technicians if they can redo the job. However, they said maybe and no, because the back cover might crack, due to the left side sinked in.
Now, since the SoC heats up easily, and the back cover might get cracked, I waa thinking of designing a back cover made of aluminium. Basically it will act as a heatsink for the SoC while also acting as a normal back cover.
I already considered a few problems that might happen, like removing the back cover (since I believe anodized aluminium will be slippery) or making custom lenses and rubber rings for the camera and flash LED, but I wanted to know, what do you guys think? Is it a good idea?
I have bought an aluminium back cover from Aliexpress but could not test it to change of season (winter) during long delivery time.
Presently I am using a hard thick plastic back cover which stops heat reaching mu fingers and major heat dissipation is through screen only. Since I don't feel heat so I am not much worried. My phone is rooted and I am using thermal xposed module which keeps everything working in all seasons (phone has to die one day anyway).
I sometimes think of using thermal paste between the chip and phone's glass back cover but never tried it.

Late answer, but I am going to try adding extra cooling on the Z4 by adding a custom copper sheet inside with some thermal paste and replacing the thermal pad on the screen side.
