[Q] Is there any ROM with *REAL* USB OTG support? - Galaxy S Advance I9070 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to enable OTG, I'mm already using CM11, read somewhere it had support for it but i'm not able to make it work with my USB OTG adapter and apps like USB OTG Helper or USB Host Diagnostics.
Does anyone has been sucessful with this? I read mixed reports here and there. Some roms claim to support it, there are a couple vids on youtube explaining how to do it, some recommend Omega 2 rom, which also claims to support it (but does it really work?), some say they got their phone bricked afrer trying, some say you need to change something (what?) in /system/etc/fold.stab (a file that, by the way, doesn't exist anymore in Android 4.4; I took a look at /system/build.prop but no clues).
In short: has anyone been really able to enable USB OTG? if yes, please, which kernel are you using and/or how did you make it? Please, real reports of people who has done it are preferred.

Nope, as far as I know this phone does not support OTG.

Unfortunately, no.
Its a hardware limitation of this phone. Cocafe said that he's working on a workaround (a few months back) but as far as I know he did not succeed yet. And so far, he was only able to come up with this:

Thanks a lot for your answers. It's a pity we don't have USB OTG in our i9070 .
Sami, I searched fer the thread you were talking about but couldn't find it; could you give me a link, please? :good:

Yeah, indeed. It would be cool and really useful to use USBs, Controllers/Keyboards, etc. on a phone.. But sadly, its not (yet) possible on this phone...
- - - - -
The link is there on my Signature.. But anyways, here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2140597
The thing you're looking for is towards the end of Cocafe's second post.
Download links to his kernels are also there on his thread. But they are only for stock firmware or ROMs based on it only.

Thanks a lot Sami! Indeed, I already knew of that thread but lost myself searching for OTG references there.
Also maybe it's worth to mention that there seem to be reports of USB OTG working on another Samsung phone, s8500 or Wave, that has very similar hardware and initially came without Android support (it came with Bada), so unnoficial CM and other custom ROMs have been developed for it. Maybe is there something in the sources that could be "recycled" for our model?

See here. Lots of info about the OTG-related parts and links to sources on github:

More specifically:
https://github.com/Tigrouzen/androi...mmit/01bf59663d0941d5bca07fab3e9598942d1f288a
In the source there are comments saying it's "borrowed" from other Samsung devices; who knows.

Cocafe is aware of it, he managed to get power output. But did not managed to make OTG to work. And he is great researcher.

Sorry, I didn't mean to disturb. And I'm aware that he was able to get power output. I understand that you are tired of people who pretend to be "useful" by just copying and pasting a couple of links. That wasn't my intention. Sorry.

Just another thought... Is it possible to get serial communication under Android (not just a recovery mode / bootloader / etc.) with one of those JIG USB cables? I mean, do they create a usable /tty device available under the operating system?

Impossible to Update

Hello,
I'm a new user in this world of htc and updates, new ROM's, etc.
I have a hudge problem (for me) with my Kaiser, i just can update my Kaiser with the original ROM, taken from HTC web site, but it's slow, witch is my big problem.
So how can i update to use one of those ROM's? i tried many, but doen's to, it's starts, but stay's at 0% and give an error on the screen.
Witch Rom it's better and how do i make the update?
Can anybody help me?
Thanks and regards,
David

Don't misunderstand us, most of the time we are very friendly but the problem is that so many double posts are around here cause people are to lazy to read.
For example have a look in the kaiser wiki and voila: you'll found your answer.
If you have a serious problem, no matter all of us will help if they can. But your problem is just an "i haven't red" thing.
everyone can read
But it's more quicly if anybody can help without reading allstuff that has in that link.
However i tried a lot's of rom's and just the original works, why the other doesn't?
What could be wrong?
Thanks for the link.
David
For everyone its simple!
For those who work with that every days it's simple!
I know that it's simple, and when i find it probably i will say " it's that, just that" or other things...But for know it isn't simple!
thanks anyway...
You need to flash HardSPL prefered 3.29 or 3.56 then you can install every rom, and that was simple cause it's the first if you search after first time flashing
Thanks
It was the HArdSPL! once again thanks.
Now, one curios thing! each one of those ROM's are good, quickly and functional?
i'm downloading again some to try! the original was too slow...
It was a bit simpler after I read things for myself.
The forums rule state that you need to search before asking.

There should be compulsary training one of which would be reading the rules, the other would include updating sig with device ROM info and place of origin etc "it all helps"
Then they are not allowed to post till they have read all the wiki and passed the test......

Excellent job!
Excellent, all seems good and ready to go even before I get my device this week. Now we need someone to port CyanogenMod
Effin awesome! Device shipped out today, I can't wait to start modding!
Sweeeeeeeeeeeet!!!
Tested on my adam with pixel qi and wifi. It appears to work great! Although, the up and down is reversed. One more thing, you should port over the touchscreen calibration option from the stock recovery to cwm, then it will be complete.
Great work!
cant wait to test this out, anything in particular that needs testing?

I guess any of the features in clockworkmod that are not mentioned as tested in the OP. I'm going to hopefully work on it some more when I get back from my work trip at the end of this week.

ok, Thus far I have noticed adb reboot recovery now works from command prompt on windows 64bit, it didnt work with 3e. I will do a few other tests later.
Latest update on 02/06/11 fixes the backwards button issue.
Excellent work. This is quite essential for any further developments.

I redirect to that so I don't HAVE to update multiple sites. I can update one link and be done with it. By your standards, there is a lot of spam on XDA.
Do you not update these lines anyway:
Run the update.zip(named cwmod3005_020611.zip)
Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5 for Notion Ink Adam - 020611
Its still spam.

I did this time, but as time commitments changed I'm not guaranteed to. Just like when people cross post anything I maintain on XDA to another forum. I ask them just to copy over anything they want except for the download link. Therefor, I don't have to go rounding up posts to make sure they are all up to date. They follow back to the one key place I'm maintaining them, which for the adam is notioninkhacks. The reason being the focused device forums give much more separate forum options, like bug tracking we are starting there. The reason I'm a mod is so I can test and move bug tracking items to forums.
Man, ungrateful, entitled, neurotic pricks like yourself make this hobby a lot less enjoyable.
Rothnic - please ignore daml. I don't understand why he's being so ungrateful. You're spending your personal time to release something that benefits the whole community. The rest of us appreciate the effort that you are spending putting together ROMS like this!
Keep up the great work and don't let the haters get to you!
Keep up the good work!!
Cant wait till my adam comes this week hopefully.. I will test and report anything out of the ordinary. Much love!!
Looking good - my Adam is currently 'shipping in progress' but when I get it this is one of the first things I'll be loading on there - great work!
Works great, thanks for this.
thank you.. works great for me. love the security of having my rom all backed up

USB tethering problem

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161308
thank you for that atleast your trying to correct yourself lol..
now as far as tethering goes it was really random with me on liquid and kifno roms it just dosnt work on them i tried different kernals but no dice if you want to stay on a 2.1 sense rom i highly recommend using nfx stock with apps2sd its by far the most stable one and everything works. because its pretty much just the ruu rooted with apps2sd.

Ok, I'll try that, but I really like this ROM and would like to learn how to fix problems with other people's ROMs, if possible, hence my DEV post. Devs should know how to do that. Are you a dev? There has to be a way. Reverse engineer, analyze logcats, update swap out drivers, etc.?
you cant post threads asking questions in development you need to go to the specifc roms thread and post your question there instead. also liquid isnt supporting his 2.1 roms anymore so it might be hard to get a fix for it.

I've experienced the same problem with more than one ROM and have tried that approach to no avail. Downloading and flashing an ENTIRELY NEW ROM because one or two things doesn't work with the current ROM is like throwing the baby out with the bath water, and a very VERY NOOB thing to do. There has to be a way to diagnose issues and fix them in ROMs in general. Someone knows how to do it. And coincidentally USB tethering in the ROM you suggested isn't working for me again! However I installed the wired tether from Google and that is working.. ATM, which did not work with the other ROM.

I didn't see any such rule listed ANYWHERE. And it wasn't your womanly nagging and griping and complaining that caused me to post here, it was my attempt to get my question answered. Your whining gave me justification for a "cross post"-if you will. You wanna be a moderator don't you? Reminds me of this.

Bottom line is, your ranting like a woman didn't help, neither you nor I could change the location of my post even if it really WAS posted in the wrong place, and furthermore, though it was moved, there is no rule stating I can't post questions as a new thread in development.

Hi
I find this a little bit....humm... risky
You share a work, so there is no critics to do on this, but you have made it for a device you doesnt own.
In a normal case, each user take the risk on his own awareness, but here you have not tested at all what you are sharing.
I would recommend to wait..

Well, normally I would agree with you. In fact, I hoped to find someone who could test it on purpose, at least until I could buy a Nexus S for me and test it on my own.
Consider this thread as a development diary until I say it could be tried without risks.
I have tested on my i9020T and it does not boot. Just sits on the Google loading screen. I also tested it with the boot.img from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350829
Drew Garen will be releasing a "Stable" version of ICS later today. Koush has yet to announce anything about his build. I'm waiting to see what people say about this one.

would it be possible to get the frandom module included in this kernel? aka frandom.ko ? here is a link to the tarball.

im adding bootanimation support and making the guide on how to compile and leaving it for the fine people of this forum to work on. sorry but digging through hundreds of thousands of line of code to try and find one modules source in a tar is not fun (its why i believe xda should enfore github like source).
once i have those two things up im hoping people who have the sgs4 will step forward and take over development
