[Q] Apps on stock Gear? - Samsung Galaxy Gear

Hi,
I'm interested in app developement for stock Galaxy Gear 1. However, I searched for SDKs and there were only tools for Gear with Tizen.
My question is: is there any mechanism similar to Sony SmartWatch 2 for creating and installing apps? The only thing I found is that I need to root my watch, and/or instal Tizen or somehow sideload apps. Is that really the only way of creating (installing) apps?

The gear 1 was released with android, and now it's been updated to Tizen. So the Tizen sdk is what you're looking for. Any app development for the gear 1 on android would be outdated.
When the gear 1 was on android, wondershare was a great way of uploading apps and moving files. Now that it's on Tizen, sideloading is the easiest because wondershare doesn't work with Tizen.

So, if I understand you properly - Gear 1 is now working on Tizen, therefore all app development is quite the same as on Gear 2, right? Everything on developer.samsung.com/samsung-gear (sorry for not posting a proper link, I'm new ad XDA) applies also to Gear 1?
This is important to me, because in my job there is an idea to start creating apps on wearables, right now I'm doing something on SmartWatch 2, and we are planning to test other platforms. For some reason we have Samsung Gear 1 so I need to know if I should start a new project with it, or is it pointless. (getting newer versions is an option, but ordering them takes a lot of time...)

Yes gear 1 runs on Tizen. If you check sammobile.com it's reffered to as Android 2.2.1.1 Therefore building for gear 1 will be just like building for gear 2! I'm sure there's minor tweeks needed across the two. You can refer to the Tizen sdk for more info.
There's also "android "wear", and it's new "android studio beta". Which will be the new overall android ide. There's 3 devices to build for on this android wear sdk. The Gear live, the Moto 360, and the G Watch. But this android studio might be the band wagon everyone wants to jump on!

Android Wearables and the Galaxy Gear?

So Google just announced a new Android fork today called Android Wearables. They're partnering with every major OEM including Samsung to bring new Android Wearables-powered smartwatches to the market. The SDK Developer Previews is available NOW at http://developer.android.com/wear/index.html. How fast do we see this stuff being ported to the Gear? This is some seriously exciting stuff!

And here's the first official product too:

EDIT: LG G Watch too: http://www.slashgear.com/lg-g-watch-detailed-as-first-android-wear-wearable-device-18321063/
good question
is that OS will work with old school galaxy gear? (non Gear2)
Samsung is moving forward without Android and if there Tizen powered Gear watch flair's well it will be Google vs. Samsung. As for the Galaxy Gear it's all but dead. The new watch is called Samsung Gear 2. dropping Galaxy from the name because Galaxy will be associated with Android based products.
My take on it is that Google's offering in its current incarnation just makes a phone easier to use. Google does not offer camera, advanced sensors, or other things that could be used for augmented reality. Samsung actually has good hardware, just that the battery technology and software haven't caught up yet.
What Google is trying to do is just provide a polished product using stuff that IS market-ready. Samsung will inevitably have to join the competition, but they might have an upper hand when battery technology and software DO catch up.

Anyone tried flashing Gear 2 firmware to Gear 1?

Now that the Gear 2 firmware is available, has anyone tried to flash it to the Gear 1 to see if possible? I'm thinking about trying it just to see what happens, but if someone else has tried and found out it's a day wrecker I'll hold off.
Wishful thinking.... Fails every time
Umm.. Gear 1 runs Android and Gear 2 runs Tizen or something - this is almost like asking has anyone flashed iOS6 on their Windows Phone isn't it? (or am I missing something here).

The hardware itself is almost identical between the two watches. Samsung has stated they are bringing Tizen to the Gear 1. I guess I'm just a little impatient. Maybe it could be ported to work?
The original Tizen was designed as open source platform. However, after Samsung bough it, they have changed it to be a stripped down version of the androids that we see in our phones. I would assume they have made it more locked down than our typical android platforms. They did this similar to what Apple did when designing theri ios, so the dev's has to conform to their policies and make it harder to crack. Its all about money.
So even though the 2 watches are almost identical in terms of hardware, the first thing to do is try to unlock the firmware first, then we can see if it can be modified to fit the gear 1 or even any other smart watch.

this is interisting ... because I would consider buying a gear 2 if I could have android on it .... otherwise it would be useless to me ... and for the gear 1 .. Im not realyl fond of the size of it .... so thats sad ... they would get me sold with a gear 2 device that has android .... bad move I think .. they dont get my money.... since for just the few function it has I dont consider it really smart... so far found no device that matches these points ... except the gear 1 which is too bulky... im looking forward to that day such device with android becomes abailable
Just saw this today. Maybe we could get a custom rom based off of this?

Galaxy Gear Live with Android Wear?

Since Samsung has had their Android Wear version of their Gear watches announced (and available for order today), what's the odds of that ROM being loaded on our Gear 1 devices? I, for one, have not gone to Tizen yet in hopes of this taking place and it seems like we are on the verge of this happening. I know it will not be an official release, but something where a rooted device would be needed.
I second ur hopes - held off on Tizen for the same reason
Whether or not Android Wear's better than Tizen all depends on which apps you use on your phone. Android Wear (like Google Now) is dependent on using Google's apps and services. Most of what Now reports off of is scraped from Gmail. I don't use Gmail or any Google apps I don't have to so Now and Android Wear are useless to me and those like me. Most corporate/professional users that use MS products, Exchange, and connect to secure networks (which typically limit apps used for personal use) aren't going to be Android Wear candidates.

I'm sure it'll fit perfectly with gear 2. I see the .tar having the drivers for the watch it's a dependent of
I would be very interested in a Wear port too.
As far as I can see, not too many things have changed on the Gear live compaired to the Gear 1.
Sure, the CPU would be faster but the screen and memory size are the same.
Count me in as well, this is where xda shines.... people coming together to contribute to the common goal. Can't wait.

How come every time someone starts a discussion inquiring about possible uses someone else feels the need to chime in why they don't need it? FYI-we don't give a rats ass about ur corporate structure-we want Android wear - go pontificate to ur secretary please

It's a discussion forum, no? Everyone here is a wearables early adopter so are interested in whatever comes next. And not everyone here uses their devices the same way or wants the same things. Other than blind fanbois who clearly have no objectivity, I enjoy hearing people's different views; even if I don't agree with them. Your post added less to this discussion than mine did. People wetting themselves over something no one here knows the functional value of (yet) is the height of fanboi-ism. Android Wear could change the world as we know it. It's going to take more than a five minute conference dog and pony for that to happen.
A discussion by folks who want wear not about discussing why someone doesn't need nor want-not a fan of any particular aspect - just bored with Gear 1-if motor 360 looks good I'll purchase, if not then wait a while
Does it only work with Samsung products, I have an invite for an one plus one I want to know if it'll work with the phone too?

I have been waiting for Android Wear to be released. I believe it would be a wonderful fit for the galaxy gear 1. Let's not forget the functionality of the gear 1 using the Null ROM....android based. Today's conference reiterated how coding would not be that much different for normal Android code. Sounds promising to me.

From earlier discussions and threads I believe Android wear requires a 4.4 based Rom to operate. The Gear 1 Roms and Null Rom are 4.3 based. The real hurdle will be getting a 4.4 Rom on the Gear. The Devs and contributors on XDA are very talented so with this release of the Gear Live maybe they can accomplish it.
I am curious what the battery will be like on the Gear Live with the always on features of Android wear. The screen has to go into some type of low power mode for the 300mAh battery to last through a day. I also have a Qualcomm Toq that I picked up cheap on ebay, that uses a Mirasol Screen and only has a 240mAh battery. I get 4-5 days always on with it (even over night). The Toq has a tiny processor, runs a unique OS, and the colors are not vibrant, but it is a very capable demonstration smartwatch. I think there may be a future for more advanced Mirasol screens.
Anyway good to see some excitement over our Gear 1. I have enjoyed being an early adapter and experimenting with Null and Tizen on the watch. Maybe Android Wear is in our future.
I want to see this. I really need to get off of this touchwiz train. Wear works with any android at least 4.3.
Hey can someone help me unbrick my alcatel one touch evolve tmobile? I tried using adb and sdk but its not working correctly for some reason. It just says closed every time i try to execute a command... :/
Btw i bricked it by editing the build prop
Does watch styler app work w Gear live?

Sorry i was refering to @Mr Ian B's question on watchstyler on Android Wear, didn't realize it could have applied to your original question in the OP. :cyclops:
Android wear was just announced yesterday, so it will probably be a while before devs can get their hands on a device, then another while before we see a port, only after that will we see if other features like watchstyler will be able to be ported onto android wear, should not be a major problem as both are of the same platform.
Personally I cannot wait to see a port of Android wear onto the gear1, I would like to see how my gear1 fares withe the screen on feature:laugh:

is anyone developing for the original gear still?

Just curious if anyone at all is still working on developing custom roms for the gear? I got it it right before android wear was announced for the sake of null and a camera. If no one is working on getting android wear running, it might be time for me to move on.
+1
wondering the same no more updates from null..
but the gear and all android wear are about the same on developement. gear has stoped and android wear not much to mod.

Ready to test, just if someone could tell me if there is any need for me to flash android before using this.
Very anxious to see what this new ROM would become and willing to test if possible/needed.
one beta tester from Spain
Eager.. eager..eager.. Let us flash something
Ok I subscribed to the other thread. What do I need to get started other than my watch lol
Not to be a spoil sport, but can we reduce the questions until OP has actually released something? This includes "please can I test it", "when's it going to be ready?" etc posts. It just clogs up the forums, cheers!
Im down for testing. even if there was a way to get android wear apps to work on tizen, that would be awesome
How to install?
Sorry, I'm using Google translation ...
I have a GEAR1 running NULL_ROM to install just download the image and install the twpr?
I saw the message that is not running, it refers to the version of 10/01 ???
I'm interested in running the Android Wear in GEAR1, I can help in any way?
Where do logs go?
Sorry for my possible noobness but where can I find logs while testing this rom and where would i post them?
I just subscribed and I wish you luck! I am on tien on my gear 1, but I will read through the thread and find how to downgrade and install the recovery this weekend. I don't know how much help I can be, but if I can get to the point of being able to test and post logs I will definitely do that. Thanks for working on this!
i've got an original gear with null rom 23 i believe .. if i can help in anyway, as long as it doesn't brick my gear let me know as i am eager to see wear working on this gen 1 gear.. i'm a relative n00b at this so testing/logging/dumping instructions would be helpful..
keep up the great work! Thanks!
still needing firmware?
I have an original Galaxy Gear with the original OS on it. I have never upgraded it and the current version shows:
V700XXUBNA6
If there is anything I can provide to help make Android Wear work on the device please let me know.
This will work with gear 2 Neo??
should i try this on my gear?
i have a galaxy gear 1 with null 23 rom and i can just flash tje file on my gear but my question is, will it work??
Stock images
I read in the ROM thread that you're looking for partition dumps. I've got a bone-stock Gear1 running Android. If you still need, I can provide the dd images.
Android wear for galaxy Gear
Im new here, but ive been following some threads for quite some time.
RE; Galaxy Gear, has anyone got notifications from iphone working on any of the ROMS?
been tinkering around - there are apps on the play store but they require 4.4, null (Great stuff), is 4.2.2 and i cant bypass the API level requirement. gonna try unpacking the APK and modifying minimum API level in build.gurdle then pushing the iphone notifier and the android wear widget components to the Null should work.
Also the android wear on a gear will breathe new life into Galaxy Gear's - the main problem is the chipset difference - exynos and Snapdragon. i think thats why it wasnt hard to port it to a gear2.
Any Tips?
I currently use my GG1 with my nokian N8, thanks Fomey
But the iphone notifications using ANCS has got me going mad, been trying to make it work since i got my hands on first gear, now i have a second and i have a gear fit.
I was ten minutes too late to grab a gear 2 at a good price.
I view this thread everyday hoping for android wear ported to our beloved gear quick noob
question could the gear 2 android wear port work on my gear 1 if I flashed it as I flashed the
tizen mod 3.0 for gear 2 on my gear 1 by mistake once and it booted up it was just the camera didn't work thinking is this the same thing or am I way off?
Thanks
What happens if I flash "Wearez-20150129-TEST-ls02.zip"?
