How to flash AOSP-based ROMs - Mi 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, judging from the number of users between Slimkat, CM, and Mokee that are having trouble installing, here is a guide to install any AOSP-based ROM for the Xiaomi Mi3
Installation Guide:
Be on a KitKat ROM before flashing
You must have a custom recovery installed that allows SELinux.
Download the Xiaomi Mi3 build .
Download the gapps
Disable True Dual Boot
Fully wipe your device from Recovery if you are not coming from the ROM you're flashing already.
Install ROM on System 1
Wipe Dalvik and Cache
Reboot
Enjoy, hit the thanks button

Would be rather helpful if you explain it in a bit more detail. People who don't know some of the things written above will be left even more confused.

Agreed, some newbies do not know all the acronyms and versions... I know KitKat is Android 4.4.x , but what custom recovery? TWRP (TeamWin Recovery Project)? Clockword Mod? The Mi3 W (Snapdragon 800 chipset?). Anyone else want to expand / pitch in?
Thanks.

get the latest recovery from either twrp or cwm. It'll work. just be sure you get the correct build.
CANCRO is the international version (snapdragon)
and most of the roms are for cancro only

Hi Bro, I am a newbie here, don't know anything at all. Can you help a bit here?
1. Kitkat rom:-> any of the miui rom will work? just the number > 4.4x ?
2. How to install custom recovery, can you give a link for mi3?
3. You meant download from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-mi-3/general/aosp-rom-leaked-t2876646/ ?
4. Install Slim on System 1 :- Can you give a link?

Is it just me or does formatting cache with CWM take forever on this device? I'm wating for at least fifteen minutes now and it used to take just seconds on my old device. I know the MIUI revocery had that annoying 98% bug but CWM shouldn't be affected by the same thing right?

Thank you very much!
PS Pomozi brate !
Flashing means installing stuff using a recovery like cwm or twrp
Please before you proceed do read some information about basic android knowledge,
or you run the risk of running into more disadvantages than bemefits from custom roms and such

I am aware of that,I've already flashed a JB over ICS using this method ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2134192 ),but that was a long time ago,and then i did not need to root my phone or unlock bootloader.
I am wondering if that method is still good,or should i try another one?I have tried to find a thread where there is explained how to flash using cwm or twrp, but was unable to find it so i would be very greateful if someone points me to a thread where there is explanation on how to do that.

For bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224020
Then follow instructions from second post
After you do steps from 0 to 3 (dont forget to put files into your internal memory), you will turn off your phone, press and hold power and volume down button simultaneously, when LG logo appears, press power button three times while still holding volume down, then you can release everything and you should be into recovery witch should look similar to this http://techbeasts.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/la-foto.jpg. Now you do steps 4-7, in backup and restore (witch is step 4), just press backup and wait a minute or two for backup to complete. Then go back and press install zip from sd card, then navigate to ROMs zip file you downloaded and click it. You will see output screen showing progress... after ROM is flashed, go again to install zip from sd card, this time you will chose gapps zip file. After that, go back, do wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition and in advanced tab wipe dalvik cache. Go back, reboot and you should be done!
IF anything goes wrong with flashing, you will reboot into recovery and go backup and restore, and restore.
Srecno
Ok,now that I am an "expert" on flashing all kind of things (ROMs,kernels,CWM,etc),I have different kind of questions....
1)With Vanir 4.4.2 latest nightlies and iodak 9.5 or 9.9 (whatever),havent tweek anything and left it be as it is, my battery drain is catastrofic. For example with JB 4.1.2 when I leave my phone overnight it drains 1-2-3% but with vanir it goes to 15-20%....Why is that?
Also, when i leave wifi on with no surfing, couple sms and maybe 1 min of calls it drains 15-20%.And that is with brightness lowered to 50% (on my JB I allways kept it on 100%).
2)Why are my antutu results that much different on vanir and cm11?I've got almost 16k on vanir and barely 11k on cm11.
Your final observation kinda answers the previous questions, it is a performance driven rom and this usually implies less battery life.
On the other hand I can say that your drain seems a little too high, but without some battery stats it's hard to say....

[Q] Few questions about Roms, flashing and Kernels

Hi guys. I just decided to use custom Roms because stock is slow. I checked some Roms and 2 interested me: CM 11 and Zaiben.
1. Could you tell me about differences between them? At the moment I have got orginal Android 4.1.2 V20B. Is it possible to flash Zaiben from V20B, I am asking because in Zaiben's thread there isn't any information about flash from v20b. There is only about flash from v20a. And I can't post in that thread yet.
2. Also what should I do before flash new Rom. Will wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition be enough?
3. And could you tell me if I want to flash new Kernel I just use install zip option? And which Kernels do you recommend guys?
Thanks in advance.

1) Zaiben is a modified stock rom, cm is a completely independent rom based on open source project.
All you need to do is have the most updated recovery and you can simply flash right away.
2) If moving to zaiben you can probably dirty flash and don't need to wipe data since it's basically the same basis
If moving to cm you will most likely need a full wipe (system, data cache and dalvik
3) Yes - you canno't ask that question
Before you do any of the above you must unlock your bootloader to install cwm or twrp recovery!
Thank you for the help And last question: If I change Kernel what do I need to wipe after this?

Flashing kernel doesn't require wiping anything.
Each kernel has it's advantages and disadvantages. You need to read through their topics and find out which one will be more suitable for your needs.
Then I will try some. Thank you for help

Hello, I have seen, it is the first time you are installing a rom. So please be careful!
You must read exactly the Instruktions from the OP.
Hello,
2. Reboot to recovery(only TWRP/CWM Touch/PhilZ is supported)
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2649923
CWR you have used does not work for flashing the rom
Btw, when you are flashing a rom for the first time, and you have less experience with roms you should to consider, if you take another rom. For the rom you choosed is still in Beta status!
Take a stable or nightly rom. Anyway you have at least to install CWR from the above Link.
Good luck!

So can i just install the latest nighly ??? (for me instaling is doing the installation from the recovery is the same as flashing?)
Im in stock rom so can't really understand about the kernel, if I install the nightly or these one, have the kernel included?, or do i have to install the kernel? (and how??? these step is done with flashtool right?)

Yes hou have had the wrong CWM. Herewith you can install (Flash=same) every rom you want (build for LOCKED BOOTLOADER)! Forget it with the kernel. On locked bootloader you cannot install any other kernel. The kernel you need for a rom is included in the rom!
And again: When you flash a new rom - read the instructions from the OP :fingers-crossed:
Cheers.

[Q] Q: Stock vs Custom ROM on SP

Hello XDA community.
I own an XSP. It's laggy, crashes randomly every now and then, and in general it is a subpar experience. So at long last i am thinking of flashing a custom ROM on it, but the thing is i am a complete newb. I have been looking into it a lot and i familiarized myself with the general steps of a flash but i cant seem to decide between all the roms. Right now i am leaning towards BlissPop 3.5.
So, tell me if the blisspop is a good choice and if it is worth it to transition from the stock rom to a custom rom.
Also i couldn't find a good recovery for xperia sp (TWRP doesn't seem to support SP). Finally, in case i regret my decision, how easy is it to restore the SP to its original stock rom and default configuration?

BlissPop 3.5 have old sources ....and the ROM support is very low ....you can go to AICP...OWN ROM...CM12.1 for sure (just choose one or read their threads to know more)
TWRP is supported ....just flash the t-kernel with fastboot mode and you will have twrp recovery ...then reboot to recovery and flash a ROM from above
it's easy to get back to stock ... :silly:
methods
1- there is a stock-based ROMs but optimized which a good choice and can be flashed easily by any recovery
2-just flash a stock ftf ROM with flash-tool to get your phone all the way back to original factory lunch

CM12.1 was my 2nd choice. My 1st choice was based on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-sp/general/5-0-2-lollipop-rom-reviews-t3093338
Also i couldn't really grasp the instructions on the CM12 thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-sp/orig-development/5-1-1-cyanogenmod-12-1-t3096100

There's a thread in Android Development with a ZIP incliding twrp, philz and cwm. Install this and you have a recovery that works easily and can be installed easily. It's another method than the one the others recommended, but it worked for me everytime.

make sure u already unlock bootloader if not go here
if u wanna use recovery from T-kernel u should flash stock fota with flashtool, stock fota n T-kernel can be found here
if u just want latest twrp with f2fs support can be found here but u should flash it with rashr(from playstore)
now u should be able to flash the roms that T-kernel support eg. cm12.1, if u flash cm12.1 make sure u flash T-kernel zip after u flash rom, cause cm12.1 rom has it own kernel in its installer

How do I flash this? Thru Cyanogen recovery? thru TWRP? If thru TWRP, which version?
I flash through twrp 3.0.0 recovery.there is no gapps in update, when I first flash through cm recovery , I need twrp to flash gapps but that lead to many fc . so I flash through twrp clean flash of ROM, gapps through twrp 3.0.0 official recovery
