Try the eroot software first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219781
PS: have you got the phone already?

yes since yesterday... here in germany with an online seller.
but the eroot method is for sony ericsson, not a motorola...
don't wanna brick it the second day.

even i want to know how to root.. do we need to unlock bootloader?

standard procedure is to unlock bl and then root...

Custom Recovery
Please make and provide one custom recovery for Moto G2. I unlocked the bootloader. But the old custom recoveries are not working. Need to root it asap.!!

ok little update.
bootloader unlocked...
but neither
-towelroot
-framaroot
-eroot
-superboot
-or mototool
worked...
so i think i have to wait ...

wait a sec, if you unlocked bootloader, couldn't you just flash a rooted kernel.
edit: Try these superoneclick and one click root

Well i came from xperia, and used to flash kernels from my pc only(even if stock recovery not available), thats why i said. besides its a moot point since no rooted kernels are available yet

if you flash your kernels via fastboot, e-thing is fine... i didn't use adb for years, so something new to me to learn it again.

Go to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224020 Follow the instructions here to the letter and you'll have zero chance of failing the unlock process
A word of caution, most users experience failure due to improper Fastboot driver installation. It's more likely you will have to install the fastboot driver manually. So be sure to install them when your phone connected in ADB mode (or when your PC asks you to).
Yes, ESA-XXX is unlockable!

The above specified method is the official one by LG.
But, for some reason it did not work for me. (i am on ESA-XXX V20A)
So, follow this tutorial..
The same tutorial is explained in an easier (noob-friendly) way here.. :good:
After unlocking bootloader, install CWM Touch Recovery 6.0.3.1.. (.img included in the thread itself)
I have tested it myself and it works flawlessly..
Enjoy! :highfive:

The official method worked for me. Incredibly easy to do.
Anyway, the best way to unlock the bootloader is via Ubuntu or similar Linux OS.
No need to install drivers. You only need the Android SDK.
After all android is unix-based, too..

no need to be sad you can still unlock bootloader and do everything you want except S-OFF as of now. Only if you are from verizon you are doomed. So head to HTCDEV unlock bootloader use hasoon toolkit for easy bootloader unlocking. flash twrp recovery. Download any custom rom you like and welcome. But keep in mind unlocking bootloader wipes complete 32gb storage so anything important must be backed up below is link for toolkit

Sorry man , sounds like you are one of the ones stuck , basically to unlock the bootloader you need to select a toggle in developer options to allow oem unlock, which leaves you in a bad spot because you cant boot into the operating system. Did you lock your bootloader? or did it lock when you flashed 5.1.

I am exactly in the same situation as you are.
Check this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/fix-fix-qhusbbulk-cm12-t3059518/page16
Read the final 6 pages. Look for similarities. I am the one who can't be succesuful. As I read your situation, it look like the one I am having. While we are still in the bootloader and responds I think there should be a FIX somehow. Just be patient. If you are not in my situation, the probabilities to FIX your phone are very high, I hope you are not in my boat.
Good luck! If I find the solution I'll let you know

Please stop spreading misinformation
Firstly - that thread is not to force unlock a bootloader. It is to recover from a brick where the bootloader was broken and couldn't be used. The guy from Motorola who provided the fix in that very thread said this will not help unlock a bootloader.
Secondly - there are still no confirmed cases of this working to force unlock a bootloader. 1 guy was not in the same situation as you, so that can be discounted. The other guy hasn't said much. No one else has managed to recover from this. The probability is not very high as you say. It is extremely low.

General:
Hey guys,
Welcome to my All-in-1-FlashTool for the Moto X 2014
My target is to publish my All-in-1-FlashTool for several devices.
This tool helps you to flash .img files or similar things. It' a alternative for my Univeral_ADB-Helper tool which you can use as well.
It includes the most important commands to flash your phone.
The tool is an easy batch file, so you only need to unpack the .zip and run the batch file.
It is still in development and new features will be added soon.
I don't have this phone for my own, I've just developed this tool for its.

If it requires unlocked bootloader, how it unlock the bootloader?
Unlocked Bootloader is required to make use of all functions.
e.g.: flash recovery
One function of this tool is to unlock the bootloader.

I'm running a 2014 on USC. This works on the USC variant? I've had too many issues in the past trying to work with software for a specific carrier on the same phone with a different carrier (that whole Mesmerize vs Fascinate fiasco Samsung had going) and would rather not risk losing my current daily driver.

You can flash any 5.5 inch.
Since we're getting rid of the bootloader warning, I should say that for Moto X Play, stock boot logo from Moto G 2014 integrates way much, much better with boot animation (same as Moto G 2014, indeed) cause it has the same green circle design, unlike the newest, plain blue material design; but I can't find it in Moto X Play size...

Shoot. Sorry. Yes it gets rid of it but you can't update bootloader till you reunlock. Lol sorry for the huge delay. Life got way to busy and I have been in and out of the hospital. My apologies for not coming back to update you
I use with that bootanimation Pixel Bootanimation, looks perfect!
