Battery drain, especially at idle - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I love pretty much everything about this phone and can't imagine it being much better. One of the reasons I bought it was for the famed battery life. Most blogs and battery tests put it at just over the Z3 and one of the longest lasting phones out there.
However, that hasn't been my experience. I'm an Android veteran and I know how to look for battery drains and what generally causes them. I'm losing a lot of battery at idle and there doesn't seem to be any reason. Nothing shows up in the battery stats. I even tried stamina mode and the results were worse. I lost 20% over 11 hours without even touching the phone. It just sat there and lost 1/5th of the battery. Not quite 2%/hr, I know, but still significant for a phone in stamina mode and not being used.
The only thing that shows up in the battery stats are the usual suspects: Android OS and Android System. I don't have a weak LTE signal or anything.
So, I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing fairly significant battery drain, especially idle drain. My battery life isn't horrible, but it should be a whole lot better from what I was reading before I purchased the phone.

Apologies for asking obvious questions, but are things like wifi, mobile date, auto-sync, bluetooth and NFC toggled on or off? Are certain apps repeatedly appearing in the Consuming Apps list? I tend to make sure I swipe these away which has helped when I've had similar excessive battery drain, for me these are (for example) Reddit Sync and Google Docs. It is weird that they don't appear to be high in the battery usage % list though...

Wifi, mobile data, auto sync, and Bluetooth are on all the time, as they are on all of my smartphones. These are not the cause of the drain I'm experiencing. If you leave all of those off all the time, there's no point in having a smartphone. NFC is off.
As stated, there is nothing in the app drain listing to cause alarm. Nothing in the battery stats is telling me I have an issue, which is why I'm frustrated.

Fair point, though I personally toggle them on and off as needed.
How any apps do you have installed over and above those bundled? I'd try uninstalling as much as possible then reinstalling then one by one. Or a less extreme option could be to clear cache in as many apps as you can, reboot and see if the drain stops.

I have everything enabled except Google Now and I lose about 0.2% per hour when idle. Also, I believe all the folks who are reporting battery life of 2 days with 6 hours SoT must be having very low idle drain.
So greyhulk I think your experience is not the norm, but unfortunately don't know how to help. Post up some screenshots of your battery stats.

When you look a the battery History details, do you see a lot of awake time? Also look at the top 3 or 4 items in Battery usage individually, do they show high amounts of Keep awake time while the phone is idle? A wakelock or poor cell signal are the two main causes of high idle battery drain.

It's definitely not poor signal. There is a bit of wake time, but the top 3 items are screen, android OS, and Android system. The wake time on those is not significant, either.

I'm about the same. I'm getting on average 7 hours on screen daily with everything on, no stamina mode, over 70% brightness. I left my phone unplugged for the first time overnight and it drained a whopping 1%! I've had the phone for over 2 weeks now.

Sorry to hear about your battery issues, but as mentioned, that's not the norm. Not sure how much help I can be, but I can tell you your Android System and OS percentages are about 2-3 times higher than mine so that seems related to the drain, but tracking down the culprit will be tricky. Have you considered factory resetting?

Here's are a couple screenshots for comparison:

when Android OS and/or Android System drain more than cell standby and phone idle you can rest assured that an app or service is draining your battery.
Many things can be disguised as Android System (/OS). It could be google now, location services, syncing of google drive, browser sync or an app running it's own service etc.

Android system and Android OS always drain 2-5% of a battery on all of my devices. However I turn on wi-fi and other stuff only when needed. Plus I have all the google services, google voice and account sync disabled.
But I wasn't happy with the battery life on my Z3c also. Cell standby, phone idle and 1-2 ours of screen time drained the battery almost in 24 ours. Maybe it was one-time occasion (I haven't had much time to test it since the phone is new), but I starting to have a bad feeling

That seems highly abnormal, I leave wifi, mobile data, and GPS on at all times, with numerous accounts syncing, yet battery life has been superb for me and many others.
It's been a few hours since I posted that screenshot from my previous comment, but my battery has dropped a mere 2% to 35% and my on screen is now at 5h20m. That's the drainage I've been typically experiencing with daily heavy usage.

Yep, Android OS and system are about twice what they should be, so that's probably at least part of the cause....

I'm not going to factory reset a phone a few days after I took it out of the box and set it up. That's ludicrous. It's set up exactly the same as several of my previous Android devices, none of which had this kind of drain.

I am seeing the same performance as you. Honestly, at the end of the day I still think the battery life is pretty solid, but not up to the legendary levels others are seeing.
Some guy said he left his phone sitting there overnight and saw a 1% drop? That is insane.
As an aside, how are you showing the Android L on screen buttons?

Factory reset is the lazy answer and should only be a last resort, especially when the device had only been active for a few days.
That would be like telling someone to format their computer every time it slows down a little.

A factory reset at the very start is the best time to do it, rather than wait weeks, months from now when it would really be cumbersome, but anyway, you do whatever you think will help. I already tried offering help and you were pretty rude about it so I'm done.

You're kidding, right? Two days out of the box, I have every account set up, all of my music downloaded, all of my apps set up, and my interface tweaked to be the way I want it. It's not any easier now than it will be three months from now. There's also the fact that the device shouldn't run this way out of the box.
Whenever there's a battery thread or a person asking for help on this forum because they have a weird drain, there are two predictable responses that will be offered almost immediately:
Turn everything off - Yes, if you toggle everything off, you'll get good battery life, but then why even have a smartphone? Most modern smartphones are capable of getting decent battery life with all radios on all the time. This is not a solution.
Factory reset - I work in I.T. If I told someone to wipe their computer every time they reported an issue, I'd be out of a job. That should be an absolute last resort. I could see it on a phone that you'd been using for months that suddenly had battery issues and you couldn't figure out what the cause was, but a phone that has been set up less than a week? Please.
These kind of offered solutions aren't helpful, yet they're always the first ones offered. It has been this way since I took it out of the box on day one. So, it either it doesn't like one of the apps I installed from the get go, or it has another issue, or is defective. I mainly posted this thread to see if others were having my experience and a few have confirmed that they are.
So, I'm sorry if you're butt hurt, but I certainly wasn't trying to be rude. I was just disregarding a solution that I predicted someone would offer that is not an option at this point (and really shouldn't be). Anyway, thanks for trying, I guess. Just please be aware that if someone comes here looking for help, they're doing so because they don't WANT to wipe their phone or turn off all of its features. They're looking for an alternative solution. Even newbies know enough to wipe their phone when things aren't working right and it's the last thing they want to hear if they ask for assistance.

Actually without having the phone in hand there is little anyone can do to tell you what is draining the battery, the suggestions given are typical of tech support help if standard things don't work. So you can either take those suggestions or do more research since you have the phone in hand and find the problem. Based on the information given there really is no magic answer to help you.

[Q] Note Battery drain? Rate Your battery Life!O_o?

Hello,
im thinking on buying the Note =]
i wanted to ask "heavy","excessive" users how is the phone battery drain ?>
*how long your phone lasts without charge (excessive, heavy use)?
*how long your phone lasts without charge (normal use)?
Im only use any of my smartphones with excessive, heavy use.
I have only 2 full battery circles and im using stock root rom/kernel.
All my phones was with very good custom kernels and lower voltages cause i wanted to stay alive during the day (8-23:00).
Now,my battery keep up the day but more easy than my previous phones (you can see which in my sign).
So, even my battery is new with few full circles, even im not using custom kernel for uc or uv, its better than my previous smartphones.
For a 5.3" display the battery life is exceeding expectations.. Based on my usage it has more battery life than the Galaxy S2 altho movie time is still the same at 8:30hrs to 9:00
I think it's very hard to define excessive vs normal use. Also the usage patterns of different people varies greatly. mostly because some use wifi on 100% of the time, others just turn it on here and there to check emails. Same for background sync and autosync which are battery drainers . So it's really hard to compare...
I keep my Wifi constantly on, background sync on, autosync is off but I have a task in Tasker to autosync every three hours manually. I have some push emails in K9 and twitter, gtalk and tapatalk syncing.
So on a day of super heavy usage the phone will last about 16-17 hours (ofcourse that includes about 7 hours of sleep time). With normal to moderate use I can make about 24-27 hours.
Hi people! I'm noob here! (wanted to write new but couldn't resist!)
I recently bought the Note and been having a few hard times with a couple of things.
One of the specifics concern battery life. Having been showered in the awesomeness of a 2,5 ma battery i thought the battery would be invulnerable but i was wrong.
The first 4 days the battery lasted me quite fine having to charge the phone once every two days. Heavy consumption was done for brief periods of 1-1:30 hours where i would try to shape my phone in the image that i wanted.
By the end of the fourth day i had a respectable amount of apps inside but not too many to explain the fact that my battery life now has decreased to 1 day.
I kinda panicked when i noticed the difference and went ahead to install Juice defender and advanced task cleaner apps. What's weird is the fact that before i did i would charge the phone before going to bed at night and then pull the plug when it would be full. By the morning the phone had lost about 25% while inert!
Noticing that i would go to the battery use feature in settings and see that the radio(!) which i hadn't been using was eating away my battery's life along with the screen which was inactive as a consequence of the phone in locked mode and a few other apps which filled the rest of the loss.
I tried to kill apps and i use Juice defender pro in custom advanced mode effectively rendering the phone dead after locking. It still consumes the same percentage of battery although now it blames the radio less and the live wallpaper more.
Am i to assume that my battery has reached it's "puberty" and that's "normal" from now on or is there a problem i just can't diagnose due to lack of experience?
This phone is my first android device. I do not know my way around it although i am learning more and more in a rapid learning curve.
Please note anything you might think has escaped my attention.
Thank you.

Your question is a little OT but i'll try to answer real quick.
25% loss of battery sounds about right if you have your Auto Sync ON.
Disable it and you'll go down to about 10% a night. Am i right or am i totally off here ?

I'll try it and see tonight. Thanks mfractal. Having been an IPhone 3G owner i gotta say, it's still kinda disheartening to see that 10% battery loss overnight is considered "normal". Will work my way around purchasing a second backup battery for emergencies.
Thanks again.

i also come from an iphone, and yeah, you have to make some adjustments.
you can take that drain to 1-2% if you disable Background Sync.
this was my batteries first full cycle. but you should get a general idea of how it performed.

Draining twice as fast after an update on apps this morning!
Hmmm, I have been using the Note for about 2 weeks now. With Juice Defender installed (with aggressive settings), I get by OK with the battery for a full day.
Well, that was until this morning when I ran an update of a few apps, and now I barely got to noon when the battery went completely drained. Same settings on Juice Defender.
Any clues on how to deal with this? I am thinking of reverting all the updates to double check.
guys, the steps to analyze battery drain are quite standard.
Download BetterBatteryStats (there's full version for free for XDA users, search the forum)
Download CPU Spy
Charge to 100%, reset statistics in CPU Spy and let the battery drain to 10-20%.
Then Analyze wakelocks in BetterBatteryStats and you will see which programs keep your phone awake.
If you want to make sure the phone is entering sleep mode and staying there, reset cpu spy stats before going to sleep and check in the morning. more than 90% of the time the phone should be in deep sleep. If not - again, betterbatterystats's wakelocks will show you what's keeping the phone awake.

sure NP.
problem is that background sync is required by quite a lot of programs to function correctly. Hell, market won't even open with it disabled.
My battery life is pretty good atm considering its still a new toy and gets a heavy workout.
The battery life will improve over time as my usage will drop but with the screen it pretty much can replace my pc for any basic web stuff outside off the heavy duty work only a high spec PC is good for.
Disabling background sync defeats the purpose of having a smart phone, no?

I do like my phone and the screen real estate, and understand that, it can be major battery hog. But I would really like it to be super efficient when the screen is off.
I was looking at my battery drain graphs, (Settings>About Phone>battery usage) and noticed that my phone is active almost all through the night, (even when the screen is off).
So i loose 25-30 overnight, on IDLE.
Is this normal?
I'm using Exchange instead of the Gmail app for my mail. Does that use more battery?

Of course gmail use more battery like every app running in background and syncing.
But your battery drain overnight is really so much.
The normal is 1% per hour without any app syncing in background and about 2% or 3% with background syncing apps.So you must check your apps.Something draining your battery.
Overall,i don't believe that note battery isn't good.i think Samsung haven't done so good work in filmwares and apps.
I have removed the most of Samsung apps and my battery is great.
Maybe a update from Samsung solved battery issue. In nexus previous days released a filmware update which change amazing the battery life.users mention that they loose 2% overnight. And before this update nexus battery sucks!
So, we must pray for something similar in our note from Samsung...
Sent from the best smartphone, Galaxy Note...
Do you have auto sync on? If so please turn it off and watch the drain overnight drop to about 10%
If not then we got a problem
I got my Note two weeks ago and am since struggling with my battery usage as well.
It's hard to reproduce, but Android OS is the reason for excessive battery usage when the phone is idle.
Today I found this quite interesting. Please have a look at this screenshot:
Since a few days ago I'm using Llama to control some settings on my phone, but the drainage was present before I installed Llama.
When you look at the first gap in WiFi usage you can see the phone disconnecting from my WiFi router at home (TP-Link TL-WR1043ND) when Llama disabled my WiFi.
About 20 minutes later, when I arrived at the office, Llama reactivates WiFi and my phone connects to our WiFi access point at the office (TP-Link TL-WA801ND).
At this point Android OS usage goes up considerably and it won't stop, even if I disable the phone's WiFi.
Actually at the second, larger gap in WiFi usage I disabled the WiFi connection manually which caused my phone to stay awake until I activate WiFi again.
Edit: Using Titanium Backup I have frozen Wifi-Sharing and the Wifi Manager.
Apart from that, Wifi usage was never an issue on my old Milestone, where I had Wifi enabled permanently and the battery lasted for 4-5 days.
I'd be glad to provide more information if that could help figure out the cause of AOS's battery usage.
My phone is currently running:
PDA: N7000XXKK9
PHONE: N7000XXKK5
CSC: N7000OXAKK9
I installed FM-Kernel 1.4, hoping it would fix this issue. It did for a day or so...
Apart from the kernel it's the newest 2.3.6 stock ROM I received via FOTA though.
I easily get a good day out of mine with quite a bit of use. If use mine lightly I can get 2 days out of mine. If you are in need of urgent 3G switch 3G off to GSM to conserve battery life.

Sorry, I forgot to include it in my post.
Since I got the phone I have it set to 2G only, because I used up my monthly quota and am getting throttled to GPRS speeds anyway. So the 3G connection isn't the issue either.
Apart from that this happens in flight mode as well.

The Sony Xperia SP, A heartbreaker Smartphone

Hi, I bought this phone a month ago, I bought that actually looked like a very good phone, analyze their characteristics, not only its design, and discard the possibility of buying the Samsung S3 Mini, I think it was a mistake :crying:
This Xperia SP is really a headache, the first thing I knew I was bad at was his poor WiFi, later learned of the problem of the screen, which to place the phone on a flat surface the touch becomes useless (I is how to fix it), and now the battery, then I have seen pictures that the battery will last up to 2 days, I was never happened in 14 hours, or when you use it the first time, now active or inactive so I Sstamina gives up to 7 hours, which sucks .
Originally came with compiling 12.0.A.1.257 and decided to upgrade to the 12.0.A.2.245 to see if suddenly improved, big mistake, the 2245 presents many problems in the stability of the OS, the screen flashes when using certain applications , Stamina mode is "Arrangement" a bit, as the cell I last up to 12 hours, but it's all over.
In conclusion I am determined to get rid of this phone, and all who ask for me, I gonna Scream, NEVER BUY THAT MTF CELL, which by the way is a bit expensive for the problems to come.
Sorry, my english is not very good :silly:

To be honest with you- the WiFi does suck on the sp, even though there are many fixes none of which will work 100% . Ive come across alot of problems with my sp also, keyboard wont pop up, walkman crashes when using certain apps. But on the plus note there is deffo an upside to the sp compared to most other mid range smart phones out there.
I have smashed my screen on my sp and have no warrenty- so im switching over to a s3 mini, simply because a new white digitiser for my phone would cost me £135.
Play around with your phone first see if you can make any good of it before you sell up

Americans ("People who live in the USA") use the term "Lemon". A lemon is a car, often new, that is found to be defective only after it has been bought. Maybe you bought a Lemon. My battery has never lasted so long, here I leave the applications that I'm running and my phone settings only asset I have WiFi, my cell phone battery only lasts if I have off jj :crying:
If I can help greatly appreciate it, because the phone I like, but do not want to have to charge it every 7 hours.
Question: If i reset my phone, can it fix?
i think may be uninstall antivirus app.

Whats your screen on time? Also ho do you use your phone? Heavy gaming or light texting only?
Things will always matter when you want to compare battery life. So give us more details. Install Wakelock detector or BetterBatteryStats to know what is eating up the battery on your phone and then work on eliminating the factor. Cheers man!

I do not play much, texting, only play when I'm charging the phone, cut the rope and Diamon Dash.
In the images shows that the battery is low 2% in 29 minutes
Ok, i do it, the result from battery stats plus.
After it, I think do a factory reset, to see how it behaves.

I think you should. Your Android OS is using too much battery. Hit on it and check which process is using the maximum battery.
Once you've charged your battery to 100%, go to Apps, All, and look for eco mode controller. Click on force stop and after 5 seconds or so, clear data. Then reboot your phone and use it normally. Check out my best battery life so far (attached images)

Battery life not quite as good as I hoped
The battery life on my xperia SP is not bad but it is no better than my previous xperia neo which had only a 1500mah battery versus 2370mah.
Many reviewers have commented that they can get through 2 days.
I can only make 1 and a bit. The key problem appears to be the screen. I can use the screen for about 4 hours/day before I'm out of juice, some reviewers claim 7 hours. Thats a big difference. Using it outside of the time is always going to be worse but screen on time is a bit disappointing for me. Stamina with screen off seems reasonable but again not outstanding. I lost 13% between the morning and lunchtime without doing anything but 15 minute syncing, I use a battery saver, not stamina mode as I don't want to shut down all my apps and have no data at all when screen is off.
Phone is only 2 weeks old, can I recalibrate the battery? Seems to stay on 1% for a while too. On the contrary, my wifi reception is really good. Better than any other phone I've had.

Yes you can, but you need to root your phone. Some people say its useless to do It, but you can try.

Battery life on standby is perfectly good for me – a few people have said that the estimate Stamina mode gives is based on recent usage. So if you haven’t had the device very long of have just had a big session on your phone the estimate might not be very accurate.
Most mornings the battery is 0, 1 or 2% down on the reading before I went to sleep…deep sleep is being enforced.
However, I don’t think the battery consumption with screen on is anything special – not bad, not exceptional.
It’s a really good phone IMO. I admit WiFi seems badly implemented and you shouldn’t need the tweak which seems to fix it for most rooted users (all manufacturers seem to still release phones with Wifi problems). But with this tweak in place I get better wifi than my old xperia (it had a custom kernel that gave it awesome range) and better than my wife’s Samsung S2. There’s a part of my house where we couldn’t get any signal for my old phone or laptops – amazingly the SP can connect!

My C5303 drained battery like hell, with less than 5 minutes on screen time, it drained 2% per hour.
bluetooth, nfc, wifi, data disabled( sim card does not have data), mobile network wcdma or gsm only
stock .245 generic RU rom rooted with bbs installed,
top of the list wakelock : superstamina xssm (nobody in this forum can fix it)
battery drains : cell standby and phone idle
already factory reset over 5 times, nothing works
is it a rom problem? app problem? simcard problem or battery calibrating problem?
really need some advice here, had been stuck with this ****ty battery life for 2 motnhs

I think that is a problem in the OS of the SP, as put or dimly lit screen this will still consume battery as much lighting.
In my case the problem was corrected a bit, I deleted widgets, some app that did not use, the antivirus was always eating, I set to use 3G only when I need it, otherwise I'm on 2g most of the time, not game unless it is connected to the charger, WiFi and GPS only when I need them, listen to music and write a little and this we see is the result, compared to what it was prior is something a little encouragement ...(Attached)
But, why have a midrange phone if you will not be able to use to stop because two hours is dead? the Sony need to fix that big waste of battery.
I will continue to see what happens, disconcerted me the Android OS consumes much battery 45% to 52% long
Please, helpme whit this, why there are applications that I am using, or have not opened, but are consuming battery?, How do I prevent them from running without my wants? any program to control the apps that connect to the internet?

Check which processes in Android OS is running the most. Install Wakelock Detector and that should help you get there
Also, hibernate apps that are running in background. Use Greenify for the same.

In the images posted I can see Mcafee and Lookout. I would suggest removing Mcafee as I have found it to be a resource hog, my opinion though. Either way u need to get rid of one of them.
In another image I noticed wifi is always on. Go to Settings -> Wifi -> menu, advanced -> Keep wifi on only when connected to charger one. That will reduce wifi wake usage.
get Juicedefenderfrom HERE OR
Snapdragon BatteryGuru from Here
If using Juice defender, set to balanced/aggressive.
If using Viber, go into viber -> more options -> settings -> wifi sleep policy -> change to use device settings not always on.
Zero the battery and do a full charge. Post updated screens when battery is under 30% ( Please include the MISC Usage screen from BBS). I expect it will be 2 days before we see those screens.
If you can even post a screen of the Misc usage from BBS just now and we`ll compare it with the next one soon.
I use JD (gives me a 1.5x boost to battery) with Stamina Mode on (no low battery or wifi). I charge my phone on an average once in 2 days, medium.
I don't have any of those problems, the battery lasts very long, don't have any flat-surface problems, wifi catches at full signal on both my houses, never had "screen flashes", only some crashes in the youtube app.
Must be a PEBCAK error

Poor battery performance, what to do?

Hey guys, I'm wondering what can I do to improve my Note 8 battery life. Seems to me that is draining and I do not get the chance to use it too much. Maybe you have an idea how to optimize and track the apps are overusing the battery, so far I was not able to detect which app/component drains my battery. Even Samsung seems that doesn't know since there is no message regarding background processes with heavy usage.
Basically I finished fully charging at 9:15 AM and now 16:15PM time I started to write the post and make the screenshots, it has 16%. What I did all this time with the phone, was:
- a bit of browsing,
- make one NFC payment,
- have the S3 gear connected on bluetooth.
- few twitter messages and viber really small usage. (less than 40 messages overall)
So here are my settings
- WIFI is off and I'm using 3G connection (I stopped LTE thinking that requires more battery.. , correct me if I'm wrong please),
- screen not even on 50% and auto brightness off (using HD+ and a dark theme, everything is so dark!)
- AOD
- no led, no gestures (most of them I turn off for testing purpose)
- Medium battery saver on.
- No phone calls
- few notifications (not more than 20, also the notification is optimized to apps I'm concerned)
Any suggestion how to make it to end of working day .. at least?
I was waiting so long for a new note and now I'm a bit disappointed and I hope that is something I do wrong..
Funny is I just realized that by mistake I put the phone on airplane mode while making the screenshots, still percentage was flying away even like this. I lost 2% making screenshots in a matter of couple of minutes.
Please find the screenshots attached in the link down bellow, were to big to add them to the post.

you might have some apps draining battery. I'm used to a rooted phone, so I'd always check with wakelock detector, but I'm not sure what you can do without installing an app as a system app.
Try factory resetting your phone and using it without installing anything for a day and see what the battery life is like. If it's significantly better, install your apps 1 by 1 until you find out which one is causing unnecessary cpu cycles or wakelocks.

But I wonder, I shouldn't see the heavy usage on the battery info page? Like which app does most of the usage and time spend in the background or CPU?
I had excessive battery drain, about 10-11% an hour with every off . A full factory reset cured the problem.
What's your screen on time usage? 5-6 is probably the normal amount you would get with most phones (This is the most important thing if nothings draining the battery). And yes, it seems you might need a factory reset.

You won't always see this as it could be a byproduct causing a kernel wakelock.
Either way, something is acting incorrectly. The only way to really figure it out is to start over and try things slowly till you find out what it is.
For instance, on my nvidia shield tablet k-1, I was getting horrendous battery life on every single rom, stock or AOSP/Lineage. I found that I was getting 30% wakelock killing ~20% battery life per day when it should be sub 5%. I found that wifi was causing these kernel wakelocks and setting wifi to be disabled with the screen off unless charging fixed the issue entirely.
Now, that anecdote likely has nothing to do with what you're experiencing, but note that you can usually find out what's wrong from trial and error.
I've had my note 8 for 6 days now, and battery life is excellent, i mean i have wi-fi and 4g lte on all the time, bluetooth on all the time, sync with 3 emails, Facebook, weather widget, weather screen refresh every 30mins, location high accuracy, edge lighting, aod schedule 7pm-7am, was 100% at 6am, played games on it lots, used the phone 2x, 1 hour call and a 30 mins call, text messages, it's 130pm and I'm at 55%, try a factory reset then log in to your gmail then just try to update the phone if there is any. Then reboot then start installing your apps. If it doesn't work call carrier customer service and complain about the battery not holding up like some people you know who has note 8. They might replace it with a new one.

So.. yeah.. I will try a factory reset and start install all the apps bit by bit and see which one causes the troubles.. hopefully is nothing more than that.

can you translate "not great" in hours? Because I will say that mine is second after horrible.. with update done.
I will start the reset in a short while and I will test it tomorrow with minimum apps installed.. those which I really must have in a working day..
Maximum 5 hrs on wifi normally about 3-4 battery is not great on note yet....some optimalization would be nice
I use Ampere to monitor the instan drain of current. In a quiet situation (screen on, internet or tapatalk browsing, gear connected, wifi and data turned on) you should have something 200 mA drain.

Maybe some of the settings changes you're making are somehow rendering your phone less efficient.
I have the USA unlocked version and use it as it came without changing to a dark theme or turning anything off and the battery life is much better than yours.

I restored from a helium backup. My battery life wasn't good for about a week but it did last all day down to 20-30% at the end of the day. After a week it has improved maybe due to apps updating. Now I'm at 70-80% at the end of the day with moderate use. I have disabled several apps I didn't need as well.
Seems like it's hit or miss with the battery life. I see a lot of people happy and some are having problems. Hopefully Samsung might push a update to help.
Get cpu spy and verify that your devoce is going into deep sleep when off(mine wasnt at first until i froze/removed some rouge apps). Install accubattery and do a benchmark and see how your battery does. At least do 6 discharge cycles first to see an average. Also, in device maintenance, you can make all apps doze when not being used now.. this is a new feature. Add all of your apps and they get put to sleep immediately. I get 8 hours SOT this way

Constant battery drain (possibly hardware failure?)

Hey there!
I've had my 1+3T for about 8 months now, and in the past two months (or so), instead of the usual 4-6 hours of SOT, I've been only getting 1.5-2 hours.
I settled with (at the time @apascual89's, now developed by @akhilnarang) ResurrectionRemix which has always worked like a charm, but it's been acting up recently. I have downloaded wakelockDetector, BBS, and looked at CPU stats from Kernel Adiutor. Phone wasn't getting any deep sleep at all, it's been constantly running. I have been dirty flashing for months at the time, so I decided to do a full clean flash (I was encrypted at the time, so I even formatted userdata), hoping it would do something, but it didn't.. really?
After setting everything up, and waiting a few charge cycles, it went back to crap again. ~2 hours of SOT, with twice as much "awake with screen off" as screen on time. Battery was draining 2-3% per hour with no use whatsoever. See the following pictures:

I have given up all hope, so I turned to oneplus customer support, who advised me to install OOS 5.0, and see if that makes any difference, but as unsurprising as it may be, it does not. I'm even getting worse battery drainage on OOS than on RR.
Since the problem persists through kernel, os, and firmware versions, official and unofficial, all I can think of is it being a hardware related issue (mobo/battery malfunction?).
Do you guys have any idea as to what I should try to fix my device?
Thanks in advance,
Lada.

why not do a clean flash of oos 4.5.1/ oos5.0 has lots of bugs especially battery related. and also change your one plus 3T's battery and se if that helps. my frmd with one plus 3 had same prob like urs. we went to one plus care and asked them to format all install oos 4.1.7 and change the battery they did exactly as we said and he is happy now with his device working fine

I've flashed OOS 5.0 because I was advised to, and a friend of mine has the same setup as I do (3T with OOS 5.0 w/ Magisk), he gets 5-7 hours of SOT, whereas I still get about 2 hours.
I would've swapped out the battery already if I didn't have warranty. Since the issue isn't because of my actions, I'm hoping they'll fix my device under warranty.
Show us a picture of kernel wakelocks.

Don't seem to have any screenshots from when I was still on RR, but this is what BBS and WLD tell me now on OOS:
Also, not sure how much information this one has, but "OS System" is usually the top battery consumer, with these details:
WiFi always scanning was most certainly turned off, WiFi on during sleep was on, but it never caused battery drain before.
First suggestion: The qcom_rx_wakelock is related to WiFi operation. Try disabling your WiFi for a few hours to see if the battery drain and excessive qcom_rx_wakelock issue is reduced.
We'll see where we go from there.

Did some Googling, and this may be Google's all holy knowledge of its users, but the first few pages that popped up were oneplus-related, and I found this thread, so I set my home network's IP address to static, and entered what address my router assigned my phone to.
I'll do a full charge before going to sleep, and going to leave WiFi off for the night, see if that indeed does reduce the battery drain.
If it does, I'll leave WiFi on for the next night, to see if the change of IP address helped at all.
I didn't change routers in years though, nor have I updated its firmware, so I find it extremely odd

I had seen the router threads while checking into your issue, but I didn't want to pursue that path until we isolated that it was first a WiFi-related problem.

Yup, disabling WiFi basically reduced battery drain to 0% overnight, qcom_rx_wakelock is also nowhere to be found.
So now what? :/
Here's a crapload of screenshots:
I took these right after waking up:
and the following are from when I got home (still, WiFi was off the whole day):

Your logs look pretty similar to the ones I've taken over this time. I've got a replacement back cover on the way, I may just replace the battery as well and see if that maybe fixes things.

Well, tbh, it probably has nothing to do with the battery? I think it's either the WiFi module (if such a thing even exists, I'm not good at hardware related stuff), or something with the motherboard. If the battery itself would have issues, it would drain no matter if the WiFi is turned on or not.

Probably not, but I've seen bad batteries cause all types of having. Wonder if this issue is 3t specific, maybe something with the 821?

I think neither, some more Googling brought up posts from xiaomi's forums too.
If it were 3T specific, I think *a lot* more users would be complaining about it, so there would be an easier workaround, especially if it would be 821 specific, which tons of phones use.

@qbanlinxx - Did you test overnight with your battery fully charged and your Wifi disabled? Are you seeing a bunch of qcom_rx_wakelock wakelocks in Wakelock Detector? If "Yes" and "Yes" the chances of this being a bad battery are about zero, and maybe less than that. If you are seeing the same stuff as Lada333, you should hold off throwing your money at a replacement battery, unless you really like wasting your money.

@Lada333 - Good to see an improvement! At least we know where part of your issue comes from.
So, one of the thoughts out there on the interwebs is that the excessive qcom_rx_wakelock issue is router-related and not phone related. Do you have another WiFi source that you can connect (maybe at work, or a family member) to and see if your phone has less wakelocks? What is the make & model of your WiFi router? If it is router related, we may have options available, such as installing Tomato or DD-WRT with better firmware.
Also, have you tried setting your OP3T to turn off WiFi when the screen is off and unplugged (Settings >> WiFi >> Gear >> Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep >> Only when plugged in)? It's not a full solution, but it can help you get through the day until we get you a better solution.
An app that gets good reviews is ForceDoze. I don't use it myself, but it may help for now.
I know that it would be a bit of a pain-in-the-rear, but I have religiously been running Sultanxda's fantastic ROMs for many years now. You might want to transition to his ROM. I haven't seen this problem on my OP3T at all, and I usually lose less than 1% per hour overnight. His support is great, with frequent updates.
Sultanxda's OP3T ROM is: here.
I'll keep looking for phone-side solutions, but let's keep checking your router to see if that is the point of pain.
Cheers,
¿GJ?

This might be just me recalling information falsely, but I think no matter if I'm connected to any network or not, as long as WiFi is turned on, I'm getting battery drain. I'll make my phone forget my home network for the night, and leave WiFi on, see if it's actually the case or not. I live in Hungary, and I was given this horrible ****ing router/modem combo for my internet subscription, which is barely researchable, only results I could find were people raging on Hungarian forums of how **** it is, either way, I've had this same router (with no software updates whatsoever) long before I bought this phone, so I doubt anything has changed there at all. I believe I looked into it a while ago, and since it's basically only given out to Hungarian people, there's no custom software to run on it unfortunately (though if possible, I might look into getting a different modem/router, this one has always been a pain in the ass to use).
I have wifi always on turned off for now, but even that doesn't seem to be helping much, I just manually switched on wifi during the day when I needed it.
The app you linked is just an on-demand wakelock generator, I'm not sure what you meant by that?
Surely, I can give sultan's ROM a shot, see if it makes a difference, however a complete and full solution for me would be if I could keep using RR.
Can't tell you how grateful I am for your detailed responses, thanks for all your time and effort!
Oops, you're right - I chose the wrong app from my past installation history. App link has been corrected to ForceDoze, which you may want to include with the WiFi setting I suggested.
Regarding your router/modem situation, you may have had an update pushed by your internet provider without your knowledge. I know my ISP updates my personally purchased modem every now and then with their own firmware.
The modem/router combo may not be an issue for you (other than the cost of course). If you can get into the basic settings page of your modem/router (usually at http://192.168.0.1, or http://192.168.1.1, or http://192.168.100.1, but it could be elsewhere), you can disable the WiFi radio of the router, and just use the device as a modem and simple router. You can then take the Ethernet output of the router to a real WiFi router for some modern technology.

Question Battery life on my Redmi Note 10 Pro became unexplainably crappy

My phone was purchased a little over a year ago. At first it probably needed a full recharge maybe once per two days, so I doubt it went through more than 200 charge cycles.
The screen on time when new regularly surpassed 12 hours with browsing and some YouTube. I suppose it became a bit worse as time went by, but the current SOT is terrible and also unpredictable. Again, it's mostly browsing on Chrome and YouTube, and it can be between 7 hours SOT to 10 maybe. The MIUI was updated to 13.0.15 I think a couple of months ago, and perhaps it became this bad after the update.
Does anyone else have this? The battery usage breakdown also doesn't make much sense. Chrome is often at the top but it counts as if only a small fraction of its usage was CPU foreground. Android System is often third-fourth, and the Cell Standby can be about 5%, but the drainage when not using the phone is sometimes a few percents every hour.
I revoked almost all of the system apps and also removed "Modify System Settings" for all of them as suggested somewhere, but that doesn't help.
Any solution?

I have MF_00, 01, 03 and 04 but not those suggested values.
Also, it seems this phone uses a lithium-polymer battery and according to online resources that material is rated for about 300 recharge cycles. Does to mean it's actually expected to degrade significantly after just over a year? I will note there's a battery health status (MB_06) simply saying Good.
Had the same problem, but I bought mine two months ago with global MI 13. Didn't use phone much but Chrome was always on top of the list with minimum to no usage at all. When I disabled Chrome with mi tools, battery was good again. Try debloating with mi tools if you don't have root, should do the trick.

The question is whether it's actually because of Chrome or that there's something inaccurate with the battery readings? I prefer not to disable Chrome.

To know that. Disable Chrome temporary and use another browser that time.
There could be a good chance that background use of Chrome is because of installed bloatware.

Are there any examples of removing Xiaomi bloatware actually improving battery life?
I know you can't remove Security as it bricks the software and this seems like it might be the one thing that actually uses background battery, but the app is revoked on my phone anyway if that actually does anything.

I know there is a list of removeable Miui bloatware, but because I choose for a custom rom, I don't know of explicit examples.
In the past, with another Xiaomi phone I have done this and I know that this minimized the ads then, but can't remember the BB improvement.
I depends what the bloatware apps tries to do and how.
If they use network connections or cause wakelocks that prevent deep sleep etc. removing them should improve battery life.

You better read the threat about debloating
Without root you can only remove this app for a user.
So in theory the app is gone for you, but it will be still there and is easy to install again.
You need adb for this and can remove/install apps the easy way with a script or manually for every app.
Personally I think you must be conservative with removing system apps to prevent malfunction.

On what kind of usage? Because as I said, for light usage I got around 12 hours SOT at first.
EDIT: Ah, you referred to 85% to 20%, that could be around 12 hours for the entire battery.
Something similar happened to me this night. Bought the phone a couple of months ago, currently on miui 13 eea, rooted, sleepy kernel with limited cpu freq. With light usage the minimum SoT i got was 12 hours. However this night battery went from 15 % to 3% and the phone was totally inactive. This is the first time i see this issue. Dont know the cause.

It seems the issue might be a bit better now, as so far the phone has been off the charger for about 5 hours and I have around 92% charge left over 50+ minutes of SOT.
I did "uninstall" through ADB a bunch of built in apps and software as suggested in some bloatware lists, although not everything (and some that weren't suggested in all cases but were supposedly related to mi account stuff), although another thing I did was unlog the mi account from the phone. I think I might have logged it in about a month ago when I wanted to change something with my mi router, and although nothing is set to backup to their cloud perhaps it did work in the background in some ways which heavily drained the battery?
I'll see when the battery is close to 0 what is the actual SOT.

Listen, the change in battery drain after the debloating I did (or just the logging out of the mi account, I don't know) is incredible! As I mentioned, it used to drain almost 20% over a 7-8 hour night with the battery breakdown I pasted above, and now it's 2% to 3% and looks like this:
Makes me wonder what it was doing in the background when all of the optional battery-draining features were supposedly disabled.
