[Q] Samsung Smart Dock not working on NOTE 4 - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got in my Note 4 and noticed something...
I plugged in my new phone as I did to my Note 2, Note 3, Note 4. WAIT, when I plugged it into my Note 4, I get nothing, not a sound a light nothing!
So my question is.....
Does that mean that it was never supported and the Note 3 just squeezed by?

You scared me for a second. Works for me. Audio works in YouTube also.

I'm using a Samsung MHL device. It doesn't work unless I connect power to it. This surprised me, since my Tab Pro 10.1 doesn't need the adapter to be powered. Interesting.

Yes. That's how I connected the dock to TV via HDMI. Unless you're talking about the HDMI dongle.

Yep, no power through pc. At least it is still an hdmi dock. Loved it next to my pc. USB hub power why U no work.

Im glad to hear that my Note2 smart dock may have a little more life left. Can you tell if it outputs 720p or 1080p? Does screen stay on with mouse attached?

Give me a few and I'll check the output. However I don't have a mouse with me so I can't test it.
Update : it's 1080p

It would be nice if the hdmi out on the smartdock can rotate horizontally. Otherwise, I have to set my phone and dock down sideways to get horizontal.
If I use my MHL hdmi dongle, it will automatically go horizontal even tho my phone is in vertical position.

Does desk dock mode work with this dock or the regular multimedia desktop dock? http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Multimedia-Desktop-Charging/dp/B0089VO71U

That's a good point. I think it did it automatically on my note 3. I have to test it again when I get home.

When used with Note2, screen turned off and image rotated on tv when mouse was attached because you no longer needed to use phone screen for input.

That is from the same link you sent, If I am reading that correctly I would say yes by the following statement.
Automatically puts your handset into a customizable desktop mode, arranging your phone's key features for more convenient use when docked

Everything works, but USB charging.
Hello,
I originally started this post as I believed the dock stopped working, well in a sense it did.
The dock now requires a charge via wall plug. I have tested 1080, and I have tried with several other monitors/Tv's all work great. Mouse and Keyboard. Once I find one of my ext drives I will try and see if it still sees the ext HD.

That dock was made back in the S3 and Note 2 days. It worked great with my Note 2, and the USB 3.0 version worked great on my Note 3. My question is if it will also put the Note 4 into desktop mode? This phone is missing most of the accessory menu options for the dock.

Well what it does is trigger a dock was connected and
Looks for compatible apps. I.e. I have car home ultra. It will default to it. Not desktop mode and no option with either dock, that I can tell.

Thanks for the info! I can't imagine why they left out desktop mode. As long as it triggers Car Home Ultra, there are some aftermarket dock apps that will work until/unless someone figures out how to add it back.

A question , does the keyboard from the Dock? I would like to use the dock with MHL and mouse connected to the USB dock .

I had issues with my note 3 on the samsung dock. Video will random come on and go out. It was doing it so much, it was not usable anymore.
After lots of experimenting, I figured out the issue. The power supply for the samsung dock is 2 amps. Apparently the Note 3 uses more juice than the note2 so power requirements for the note 3 is not enough ONLY IF YOU ARE USING WIRED KEYBOARD AND MOUSE. I found out using wired mouse pretty much draws just enough power where the note 3 will go crazy. I connected the dock to a slightly higher usb power supply (2.1 and 2.4 amps) and it works fine. Video is now stable.
To stay with the OEM usb power supply for your samsung dock, go with a wireless keyboard/mouse. I connected the wireless usb transceiver to the dock to talk to my keyboard and mouse and all is well. No more issues with the note 3 and also the note 4 when connected to the dock.
The video display on my note 3 will automatically switch to horizontal view when it detects a keyboard. Detecting mouse will not automatically rotate the external screen to horizontal view. Haven't tested this on the note4 to see if the note4 exhibits the same behavior.

Hello all. I just got one of these because I read that It worked fine for the note 4. Only thing I read that didnt work was the audio out.
I guess I read the wrong stuff.
When I plug my dock into the included charger, then put my note 4 in it, NOTHING at all happens. I have never used a dock before, so I dont know exactally what to expect. I thought that the phone would at least start to charge, but nope.
I tried a USB flash drive, but when I plug that in, nothing happens on the phones screen and no audio prompts. I dont know exactally how to see the flash drive.
Also, I dont have access to my big tv with the HDMI to test that out, kids on xbox, but as soon as I do, I will post back here to let you know if that works.
Does the cord matter? The small white cord that came with it developed a short in no time. I wasnt rough on it at all.. Oh well.
Any input is greatly appreciated as I already submitted a return ticket. If this thing works but only without charging, I think I can live with that. Kinda sucks though.
Thanks all.

USB-OTG microSD adapter

I wanted an adapter that plugged in to the micro USB port with OTG capability & just had a microSD slot on the other end. However, I couldn't find one, so I set out to make one. I took an micro USB to USB adapter and modified it to be OTG capable and then plugged in the smallest USB microSD adapter I could find. Now I have a nice little adapter that I can plug in without having it flopping around like a tail on the end of a cable. Just thought I'd share my project.
I used information from this page to hook up the wiring correctly:

Wish I'd have found that when I was looking for it, & I did look quite a bit. Anyway, thanks for the link, I just ordered a backup!
Does anyone have the balls to try to make a y-cable and test it?
Head 1: MicroUSB for tablet.
- All cables connected with ID connected to ground for OTG.
Head 2: Female USB (power only)
- Only black and red power cables connected.
Head 3: Female USB (power and data)
- All 4 cables connected
What we hopefully should receive is the possibility to charge the tablet while having storage mounted, plus have the USB devices powered by the power cable instead of the tablet.
I don't have the Nexus 7 myself yet, else i would have tried by now (not available here yet).
I need something like this cause i wan't to replace the screen in my car with this tablet. But since i want to replace the current screen which is mounted inside the dashboard, i wan't to be able to charge while using external storage, since it won't be too easy to tage the tablet in and out all the time.
Question is just if Nexus 7 allow us to use USB as host while charging? If not, could that be kernel related?
Hope someone got the nerves to try this out

Unfortunately there is apparently a several week wait for it.
Delivery: Estimated between Wed. Aug. 8 and Tue. Aug. 21
It appears several of the USB-OTG cables being sold are shipped from Asia and have multi week shipping delays.

You'd need to mess with the kernel to keep it from turning on the Vbus supply and disabling charging while in host mode. Otherwise I don't see why it wouldn't work.

USB OTG Cable host mode while charging anyone try this accessory?

I've searched and never seen an actual 'buyable' product linked on the forums so if this is a dup, I apologize.
Anyone try one of these and see if you can have your Nexus in host mode and charge at the same time?
Is the only option for the female Micro USB port to bring more charge to a usb device plugged in and not to bring charge
to the Nexus itself?
Two scenarios would make this ideal for me:
1.) using my usb xbox controller to play games yet still keeping my tablet charged
2.) using a usb thumb drive to play a movie while still keeping my table charged
I think this would be pretty cool if it worked but I don't know the technical details on if it can be done with our Nexus 7's:

Looks like it's meant for providing power to the USB device you connect (e.g.. external hard drive) instead of to the Nexus7...
The eBay description says it provides charging the the micro-USB port. Only way to know is to buy it and try it out

OTG and Charging is mutually exclusive, the OTG cable triggers the USB controller to send power out to a device, not receive power.
the pogo docks on the bottom of the device are also impossible to charge from as the nexus 7 has only been given one charging circuit, and that is the same one that OTG disables.
The only way to achieve something like this would be a physical battery hack where you splice in a charging circuit direct to the battery, without frying the phone maybe some unidirectional resistors, so that it can be simultaneously charged whilst powering the device.
I'm 99% certain of this information, and this is not to say someone might hack a kernel together one day
you might be able to install one of them batteries you can just set it on a charging pad and it will charge

Wrong. https://github.com/teamhacksung/and...mmit/4c1c965b168bc4488ef66889e1c8933bc1b3de46 for an example on Galaxy S2/Note
As to whether the adapter linked is a proper OTG ACA (they're VERY hard to find) and whether the grouper supports OTG ACA is unknown. It's something a kernel developer can probably implement.
Thanks Entropy512, I can see it working on other devices, that gives me hope... I might rig something up myself now, I've wanted to take a cheap usb keyboard plastic leather cover, and build in an extra battery, card reader and usb hub, now this might be theoretically possible

I can confirm that simply splicing a standard OTG cable into the port and plugging in a power cord will not work. I thought I'd utilize the empty socket from where the rear camera was supposed to go, and try to fit the OTG-to-microSD set-up inside of the Nexus. I bought a salvaged USB/headphone port from a damaged Nexus off of Ebay for $1 and the smallest microSD adapter I could find. With the use of a ribbon cable from an old laptop, some trimming, and some REALLY careful soldering I was able to make it work... sorta. Stickmount sees the card and everything runs great, until you plug in a power cord. Then, it disables the microSD adapter, and even though Stickmount says it's there, no files are visible. Also, the Nexus won't charge with this arrangement.
It might work with a different set up, but simply mimicking the OTG cable will not allow a Stickmounted volume and when the charger is plugged in.
(BTW - To make everything fit, I had to use a Dremel to grind away some of the mid-frame area around the rear camera space. It's a tight fit, but keep in mind that until you have a spare mid-frame, like I do, you'll obviously void your warranty.)

Hope all your work ends in success.

The charger I bought for my Captivate charges it, I'll have to look at it to see what amperage it is.
I have this charger from my previous iPhone and it works like a charm! It is 2.1amp but I don't think it hurts the phone since it has smart technology to direct the power as needed!

The motorola one you have is still a beast when it comes to recharging. I have a few of them, one in each car and an additional one for business trips. While running gps, streaming music, and the screen on, my battery still recharges. I have other 2.1 mAh chargers, but always come back to the motorola one. Especially since they are around $5 on amazon.

That's the exact one I use as well. To give you an example, the Note 2 just can't be charged via standard USB port. 450mAh is not enough. I will see if I can do some testing to show you the differences visually this week.
Driving 45 min to pick up the last 64gb microSD card for sale in TN at radio shack (for $39) I had bluetooth on, sharing my data connection with my wifes tablet via foxfi, and using gps, the motorola still can charge the battery while all that was running. At my office, we would call that FM, because I can't really explain how it works just as good as my $15 2.1mAh charger.
What app are you guys using to measure charging rate?

I use a 3A charger in my car, but it's all wired in. Got myself one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-DC-Con...plies_ET&var=560164310799&hash=item3ccbaa5de8 , a 3 way switch, 2 'add-a-fuse' things and wired it all up behind the dashboard with just my Micro USB cable poking out in the drivers side of the dashboard, which plugged into my old car cradle when I had the HTC Sensation. The switch is mounted in one of the blanking plates down by my right knee (right hand drive) and lets me choose between off, on and on-with-ignition for the charger. At the moment I have to plug it into the bottom of the Note 2 myself but I'm planning next to de the wireless charging mod, and integrate the charger into the cradle I have, with NFC also in there to activate car mode when I put the phone in the cradle for (IMO) the perfect solution with no wires trailed all over the car, and my lighter socket free for other things
It was all pretty cheap as well, and an easy mod to do - even though the cradle is on the opposite side of the car to the fuse box and I had to pull out the whole radio and centre console to route the wires... all hidden away now though.
I'll be doing the same on my next car as well.
I was looking at *low profile* dual USB ported chargers but it appears from my lack of knowledge that these are all wired for iPad charging and without a specific charging cable they will only supply max 1A to the Note 2. Can someone with more technical knowledge of the vagaries of USB power please clarify in simple terms?
I would have thought the iPad would take a higher current than 1A

Wireless charging with the Nokia dt900

Just thought I'd give other Nexus 4 users a heads up about using this charger (it works, don't worry, just has some caveats). I got the charger today and was excited to start using wireless charging so I plugged everything in and put my phone on the charger. It started charging... and then stopped... and then started charging... and then stopped... and then the light started blinking on the charger (indicating a charging problem). I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I tried a few positions and some worked for a little longer than others, but I kept running into the same problem. I couldn't find any posts complaining about trouble or issues with the charger though so I decided to keep investigating (and didn't see any posts about anyone actually using the dt900 with the nexus 4).
Then I realized the phone was sliding ever so slowly off the charger (by now I think everyone knows how easy it is for this phone to slide off even 'flat' surfaces). I guess any movement at all really messes up the charging. For now I just threw an upside-down mousepad over the charger, which has stopped the phone from sliding. Wireless charging now seems to work as expected. Overall it seems pretty flexible with regards to position, and it charges even without direct contact (and I'm not using a thin mousepad either), but I guess even barely perceptible motion really messes it up.
tl;dr charging works, but only if you prevent the phone from moving at all.

Yup. Daydream starts and it continues charging.
Where can you buy one of these nokia chargers? Is AT&T the only place to get them so far (with the purchase of lumia 920)?
Pretty cool, I wish the N4 charged with the Palm Touchstone that I got, but it doesn't seem to work. At least it works well as a kind of stand of my phone. I'm hoping Google releases the charging orbs soon!

I got mine from Verizon's online store, though they only have the white and black versions.
I want to know how much google plans on selling the charging orb. The price on the nokia charger is around what i was expecting a wireless charger to cost. The nokia charger looks better IMO then the nexus orb.
Hmmm... I'll have to try this method with my JBL PowerUp. I'm having the same disconnect problems. It's really upsetting since I payed $300 for it hopefully it works. I'll wait until I get my rear screen protector. That should add some grip. If not, I'll try adding grip to the charger using another screen protector, or a gadget pad that I have for my dashboard.
Edit: this method did not work for my JBL
I still have the same issues of disconnecting every 3 seconds. I might have to return it and invest in a different wireless charger or wait for the orb. Then I'll have to get a separate nfc speaker. :/

The mouse pad trick worked for me.
I took the pad and placed it over the mouse pad, used a razor blade and cut out the shape.

I'm experiencing the same intermittent charging problem on mine. Overnight, my phone only got up to 70% charged. I'll have to try adding some friction, like a mouse pad.
Anyone use the LG charging pad sold through Verizon?

The LG pad works great on the N4, only annoying thing is that the LG charger beeps when you put the phone on it. Gets annoying after a while.
If you turn your phone off it will charge fully with no blinking lights from the charger.

You can also add two rubber bands to the charger to make it stick. Works perfect!
I also have the DT-900 but i feel that it charges very slowly. Could it be due to the low output of 750mA?

Yes it's because it's only 750mA. The USB provided with the Nexus 4 is 1200mA.

I have the dt-900 and my nexus 4 has a TPU case. I tried a ton of times to get it to work and it would always stop after a while and charge really slowly when it did. is the solution really this simple? The mousepad keeps it charging while the friction between my case and the charger couldn't?
I'll have to give this a shot.

MHL

I was thinking about this cable in link below
http://www.maplin.co.uk/mhl-adaptor-cable-mhl-jack-to-hdmi-and-micro-usb-636712#
but will i be able to full utilize capabilites of this cable (like multi channel audio? since i do have few mkv(3.0gb) files in my xperia S but it always pass stereo nothing more than that no dolbydigital or DTS even on my HT-AS5 since m2ts are too big!
THX in advance
First of all, the question your asking, I don't know.
Anyway,
Doesn't this thing do the same thing? It costs less.

Will xperia Z be able to play Dolby digital or DTS ?
Multichannel audio passthrough for HDMI/MHL is currently not supported on any smartphone at all. Sorry!
Can anyone tell me if an 11 pin adapter the galaxy s3 uses will work with the Xperia z? Seen a few of those on eBay reasonably priced.

The XT uses 5 pin MHL cable I'd imagine the XZ will use the 11 pin MHL but I can't seem to find any confirmation on line, I have a 5 pin MHL cable which I was wrongly sent but have a 5-11 pin adapter anyway....so I believe you will be fine

On Clove video, it says we need to use MHL adapter used for Samsung Galexy S2 and Note.
MHL adapter used with S3 and Note2 will not work.
Hence I think xperia Z uses 5 pin MHL instead of 11 pin.

Oh really, that's kinda weird as most 2012/2013 phones are using 11 pin mhl, it's no issue for me as previously said... Just find it weird Sony would use old tech if you know what I mean.

Which mhl charges at the same time as displays the image on the tv?
This was mentioned by Sony.
Or do they all do that

It's really confusing, if anyone knows the answers, please share...
11 pin or 5 pin fox Xperia Z and what's the difference?
Does the MHL to HDMI adapter need to charge while outputting?
I heared they do need to charge otherwise they don't work...
Is the phone still loosing power while outputting?
Heard so from some sources...
Are there quality differences or other differentiating standards among the adapters?

I will post my findings Friday about which pin the XZ uses... As for charging that is correct you will need it to be on charge otherwise it doesn't work. I've never experienced phone losing power with my Note 2, I'd imagine if you were playing high end games maybe that could happen, not sure.

I got this mhl cable with a screen I bought, no adapter though, just a plain cable. I tried connecting it to my screen but my Z just shows the MHL logo in the notification bar and nothing happens, do i have to enable anything?
What tv have you got?
Have you plugged in other smartphones or tablets via mhl or micro hdmi onto the same tv?

Tried it on a KDL-55HX820 and a KDL-40W5500 , i don't have any other smartphones or tablets who support MHL though (i think). Please note this is just a cable, without a charger or anything.
I'm also getting an error when connecting to KDL-55HX820, and this is definitely a HDCP capable screen.

How many pins does this one have?
Also have you try to stream full HD movies with that thing? Was that pleasant?
Regards.
^^^ All MHL working like this, charge while send HDMI signal in the same time...
the only difference between 5 and 11 pins MHL's is that with the 11 pins MHL you can use both the HDMI and also connect a USB device ( like a mouse or controller ) to the device... with the 5 pins, you can't, USB or HDMI... if you want a mouse, keyboard or a controller go for bluetooth...
for Short
5 pins MHL
- HDMI output
- Charging
11 pins MHL
- HDMI output
- USB OTG functionality
- Charging
all Xperia's uses only 5 pins MHL, and the 11 pins MHL is not compatible with 5 pins, so you can't use S3 or Note 2 MHL adapter with any Xperia ( or even with other 5 pins MHL Samsung devices like Galaxy S2 )...
BTW, AFAIK the 11 pins MHL is not a standard approved by MHL consortium, while the MHL standard does not have a standard plug and you can't use whatever plug you want, the current standard implementation of MHL only uses MHL signal over standard 5 pins USB plug... it's the most wildly used implementation now...
If you remember the older Docks used to have both USB and HDMI ports in the back side, the Sony updated that dock to remove the USB port, that's because you can't use both ports in the same time with the 5 pins implementation of MHL...
Theoretically If Sony still have the microHDMI then they will be able to have this HDMI + USB OTG + Charging at the same time as the microHDMI has more pin counts ( 19 pins ) so it will be enough for all these things, but microHDMI is not physically compatible with microUSB so they can't use it alone and will require special cable ... and it's hard to have both plugs after they got rid from the microHDMI in 2011 devices... thought it was very nice as there was no need for an MHL adapter !!

I bought other one and works fine but the phone is slower, not very slow but slower. It is easy to check it when you run a modern game . And I can't use the mhl cable without connect it to the power one.
Are these issues normal?
Thank you.
