[Q] Are all the 2014 Moto X wooden backs *real* wood? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just received my shiny new Moto X from Texas to the UK in just a few days... Thanks Moto.
I was a little underwhelmed by the walnut back that I chose though. It looks... plastic. Bit disappointing really. We have oiled solid walnut worktops in our kitchen and there's a shimmer from the grain of the wood in the light; you can see texture in the grain. The back of my Moto X looks like plastic veneer in comparison.
Looking at the MotoMaker site again, three of the wooden backs are described as 'finish', i.e. "teak finish", "ebony finish", "walnut finish" whereas the bamboo is just "bamboo". Makes me wonder whether Motorola is pulling a bit of a trick here and only the bamboo is actually real.
Can anybody reassure me that my walnut really is walnut? I'll be very disappointed if it's not, since this was the whole reason for choosing this model.

Yes. They are all real wood, but they aren't the actual wood. They are just stained. The only one that's "real" is the bamboo because it's not actually a wood.

So you're saying it's wood... but not walnut?
(Just for my curiosity, how do you know?)

They are all bamboo, just stained

For the record, your link doesnt say anything to the fact of them all being bamboo.

You are correct. I read (or misread) that somewhere else.

Thanks for the link, Restola. It's talking about the first-gen Moto X but I don't suppose the new one is much different. What a shame. :-/

Matte Case Review

I recently ordered a Matte TPU case from a seller on ebay in Hong Kong. I like giving my phone some color on occasion but nothing overbearing or ugly. I dont like the clearish TPU cases with patterns because unless you get it in black or white (clear), the color looks awful to me against the black phone. So i decided to give the matte ones a go and i love it. The only down side is that i wish the buttons werent covered at all, it makes them a bit more sensitive but at least they arent hard to press and i suppose i could just cut it out. For now it doesnt really bother me.
I doubt these cases will provide much shock protection from a bad drop but i think they look good and are extremely slim. I went from using the Amzer to this and my phone feels naked now lol. Ill switch back and forth for when i feel like i need better protection. It feels great in my hand and slides easily in and out of my pocket. The plus about this case is that it doesnt have that hideous random red tramp stamp strip on the back like majority of the matte TPU cases. Im extremely anal about how my phone looks so that was a h*ll no. Also, youll see in the pic below that the front edges are a bit shiny, they arent matte like the back and i guess it adds something to the design. The material covering the buttons is the same thats around the edges. So if you wanted to attempt at cutting and freeing them from confinement, you already have an outline.
The seller i purchased from is out for the Chinese New Year but i think it says they will resume sales on the 11th or 12th. I purchased on the 23rd of January and got it on the 7th so thats pretty average wait time coming from HK.
I also tried out the "S" case that has a thread here in the forum, and way too snug for my liking and i didnt like the gloss next to the matte, so if anyone wants it i can mail it to you or its going in the trash. (i got it in black.)
Here are two pics, sorry i dont have one of it on the actual device but the best camera i own is....my Nexus lol. The itouch fails miserably at a decent photo. And yes remember it is flexible...

Hope thats somewhat helpful!

Then dont buy one. It was a couple bucks maybe? Its not like there are tons of cases out there that are worth the money so a little on the cheap side doesnt bother me. I wanted plain, slim, and color and thats what this is. I think its hard to avoid a "cheap" look when you spend 4 bucks on a TPU case. But anyway, thats what the review is for...to help you decide if you want one or not.

Haha I've been told a few times that I should but I don't think I have time to learn with school going on. I see like....3 girls on this forum so its kind of intimidating lol. The most I've even done for myself is make docks. I'm working on an icon set though that's been taking forever. Add me to gtalk...same name.
i actually got this case in white. It's actually a very good case for $1 and change. It is very slim. I love it. The buttons are easier to push then the ones on the amzer case.
Definitely worth the $1!!!

[Q] Can you change the backs?

Hi All,
I'm considering the Moto X as a replacement for my Nexus 5. I'm kinda undecided about wood vs leather for the back - but I was wondering, can the backs be swapped out easily enough? I'd then be tempted to buy a wood one, and a leather back later on if I fancy a change. I believe this was fairly common practice with the old Moto X - but not seen it mentioned with regards to the new one.
Thanks.
No, you cannot, the back cover is sealed using an adhesive. Go for the wood one, the leather will get worn out soon.
Thanks very much. I would take the wood over leather anyway, since it's a bit different. Just need to work out which wood though.. I'm keen on 3 out of 4 of them! I've only seen bamboo in person (it was nice, but lighter than I thought). Had a lovely feel to it though. I'd love to see and feel the others before buying but I suspect it won't be possible.

Try and watch some video reviews, read reviews on the web, high res pictures. These should help you decide by giving you a better idea. Use the thanks button instead of typing it out, much easier. Oh and , if your gonna put a case on it anyway, you could always buy the plastic back one and save some cash.

I saw a video where someone took of the back, it came of with some damage but I think a new one could be glued back on

Replacement backs

Hey everyone,
Does anyone know where to get replacement back panel for the Moto X 2014? I thought I liked the leather, but I'm not sure about it anymore. I would like to try one of the plastic ones, definitely not the wood, I've been seeing some disasters from those. Is it possible at this point without contacting Motorola and their terrible customer service?
Before you post a lmgtfy.com link, I've looked already, and I'm not sure if I don't know what I'm looking for, or what, but I found a few sites...
etradesupply, and I think even Ebay have some parts that could be a potential replacement?
Edit:
Moto XT1095, if that makes a difference.

Double sided tape holds the shell on..I have attached a YouTube link, start at about minute 3:00 and you can see the removal process..
The new panel/shells that I have purchased from the eBay link I provided, come with the double sided adhesive already applied..just pull/peel off the plastic covering and apply to device..

Thanks for the video. I can see why the wood backs are peeling now. I'm totally not going to replace mine if I don't have to, but nice to know about the Sim tray trick.

Just received my Moto G, is a case really even needed?

Love the device, just got it today. Am I safe without a case? If it drops do I risk major damage to the device or the piece on the back that snaps on?

Yes, is better. Just a bumper. To keep it safe.

I always use TPU cases. They are not very bulky, don't attract dust/lint and they provide some bump protection. Incipio makes a nice looking one (Motorola sells this) or there are plenty of generic TPU cases out there.

I find it one of the most slippery of all the phones i've owned. When i discovered a crack in the speaker seal, moto asked me if i dropped the phone. Never dropped, don't want to use it without a case. Absolutely need a good case. I made a mistake ordering a nice looking ebay case under $4.00. Now i want to spend $10+ on a quality case.

Haha, just wait until you try the Galaxy S6.
Give a try to Moto G Premium Quality Screen Protector : Anti Glare Matte edition
Needed? Nope.
Desired since you put some cash out for a nice device and you might want to keep it in great condition since it's mainly plastic? Yep, definitely.
As for recommendations, people need to choose the cases they find most appealing and at prices they can afford so I rarely ever go that far. There are quite a few cases available because the Moto G3 is a pretty popular device - the Moto G series are Motorola's best selling phones - so you'll find something to your liking at a good price if you spend time doing the research.

An hour after that misquote from CES someone else from Lenovo put out a press release clarifying that the Moto line of devices is not going anywhere - it's their best selling devices so even though Lenovo has made some stupid decisions over the years (what they're doing to ThinkPads is one of them) they're not THAT stupid as to dump the most popular best-selling hardware devices in the history of their Motorola Mobility purchase.
Another stupid thing? Dropping the Motorola brand name which will happen later this year.
I use a case mostly as a safety measure, but it makes it harder to use it one-handed. :/
Always use a case. The one time I had my case off (it was my old Moto Atrix HD) I dropped it and shattered the screen. I did replace it and had fun doing it but the g3 is a bit harder. I used to use a plain gel case.

Accessories Cases, covers, protectors?

Hello X fold gang!

Well, i bought one and received it. The quality is really poor compared to the vivo original black one. I wanted to match my blue phone. Wrong idea. I will keep my black ordinal vivo. Better coverage, better material.

Hi, so far I see this is the best looking case for the X Fold but the only thing hold me back is the shipping take over a month to come

The only problem is that you will not get the wireless charge anymore. With that metal piece on the back.
And i you read comment, you loose fingerprint unlock on front screen... Too much inconvenient for me.
I ordered the Vivo case with the phone. Quite happy with the protection and it doesn't add a lot of weight - the phone is already heavy enough!

this is what i got. i didn't like the front frame, so i removed it. it blocks the bezel. you see, there are functions nowadays (such as sideapp menu, back button) that require user's finger to hold the very tip of the screen for half a second before the menu popups. then again, without that frame you may damage your front screen if it falls. secondly, the stand in the back requires a hard surface in order to hold it stilll. then again, i wouldn't say this is a bad case overall. but it has its flaws. the rest i am satisfied. the material, the durability, it fits well and it covers the side well.
