How many microphones on Nexus 6? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I cannot find anywhere information documenting how many microphones there will be on the Nexus 6.
The New 2014 Moto X is said to have 4 microphones, this is usually advertised as something further to entice consumers ( better noise cancelling) and better clarity on speakerphone calls.
but nowhere is it listed how many microphones the Nexus 6 has. It's been omitted from the spec sheet on the official website http://google.com/nexus/6
Anybody know?

It will have a number of microphone(s) between 1 and 4.

At least two. The bottom speaker is a mic and speaker. Top speaker is a ear piece and speaker and in the back (more noticeable on the white version) is an additional mic.

Yes, I'm really interested in this question also.
Noise cancellation on Nexus devices has been very poor, since the Nexus One, which had great noise cancellation.
The Nexus One was one of the first phones to use the Audience noise cancelling chip, which is the best noise cancelling solution in the industry. It really amazed people at the time and got a fair amount of press. I remember being in calls on my Nexus One in a noisy bars and having people think I was at home. It was great.
After the Nexus One brought attention to this feature, the iPhone 4 copied it (and also got some good press for it). Bizarrely, with the Nexus S Google dropped active noise cancellation altogether. It totally sucked. The Galaxy Nexus has some sort of active noise cancellation, but it wasn't very good. The Nexus 4 uses Qualcomm's Fluence noise cancellation, which has become the most commonly used noise cancellation solution, I assume because it's included with the Snapdragon chipset and cheaper for manufacturers to use. But Qualcomm's Fluence is really nowhere near as good as the Audience chip. The Nexus 5 also uses Fluence and for some reason does some weird things, like cutting in and out too soon, and cutting off your voice for you caller--so it's not even as good as the Nexus 4.
So for noise cancellation, the Nexus line has the strange lineage of starting out at the top, plummeting to the bottom, and then waffling around in a mediocre middle ever after.
Strangely, even Apple dropped the Audience chip in the iPhone 5, for an inhouse solution that's even worse than Qualcomm's Fluence. HTC used to use Audience in the One X, but dropped it in the One. LG used it in the G2, but dropped it in the G3 for Fluence. Only Samsung has consistently put it in their flagship phones.
Now along comes the 2nd Gen Moto X, which as the OP notes, uses four microphone noise cancellation. As far as I'm aware, it's the first phone with four microphones. Audience has a three microphone technology (Qualcomm might too), but only a couple handsets have ever used it. Motorola uses it's own CrystalTalk noise cancellation. In previous phones, CrystalTalk was okay but not even as good as Qualcomm's Fluence. But there have been good anecdotal reports about the noise cancellation on the 2nd Gen Moto X being a big step forward from the 1st Gen Moto X. I have yet to see a good objective test of it or to try it myself.
So of course, since the Nexus 6 is based on the 2nd Gen Moto X, the idea that it might get the four microphone noise cancellation is enticing.
On the other hand, why aren't they promoting this feature if it's there?

the only article I found is this, but it may not be credible: http://www.androidheadlines.com/2014/10/phone-comparisons-nexus-6-vs-motorola-moto-x-2014.html
Besides the usual, basic Wi-Fi, NFC Bluetooth and a microUSB port, the Moto X does have a couple features they left off the Nexus 6 – four microphones for noise cancellation and better voice sound, the Dynamic Tuning engineered by Motorola for better reception and the option of a real Leather or Wooden back.

if you look at a Moto X and a Nexus 6, there is something that the Moto X has that the n6 doesn't have: a hole near the top on the back of the device. so it may be that the n6 may not have 4 mics. the max amount may be 3. that's only based on my observation

also, the dynamic tuning for better reception not being the the n6 is possible, since the n6 is so large, it probably could fit the antenna somewhere. the metal band could be just for looks. but I find it unlikely that the metal band is only for looks, but rather it has a function

For the huge price increase for the Nexus 6 and the fact that the excuse for this was because the Nexus 6 is now "premium" I would expect it to have 'premium' specifications.
e.g. - HD or QHD screen [TBA - but how vivid it is remains to be seen...likely the same as the Note 3 though, so potential fail]
- 3gb RAM+ [check]
- 64gb storage [check]
- Build quality: premium [check]
- Microphones (4) [TBA - for the size, it should have 4, especially if the smaller Moto which it is based has 4]
- Big battery [check]
- Dual flash [check]
- Front camera HQ [TBA: the HTC One M8 has a 5megapixel front shooter...why not this? At least have 4mp)
- Design: slim? [fail: the phone could at least be a LITTLE slimmer...1+cm is fat for this day and age]
- Rear camera with OIS and smaller than 1/3 [half-check: it has OIS, but the size is still 1/3...should be at least 1/2.5 for the size of this phone]
I think the Nexus 6 should have a better screen, better rear camera (1/2.5 or better at least), 4 mics, be slimmer and have a bigger front camera to really earn the title of 'premium'. I would happy pay the asking price or even $50 more for the added extras. If the Note 4 can have what it has (including stylus) for about $100 more...the Nexus can have all that plus some. They are still earning huge profits on each device sold, why not actually make it the undisputed king of premium instead of "this phone is premium but there are some questions..".

Yeah, I saw that article too. It seems like they are assuming that since the four microphone noise cancellation is not listed in the Nexus 6 specs that this means it does not have it. But I've seen so many omissions in specs from phone manufacturers that I wouldn't make that assumption.
On the antenna design, my understanding is that there is no reason to put the plastic separaters in the metal band around the edge of the phone if it's not an antenna. You need the plastic to keep the separate antennas isolated from each other. This part of the Nexus design is identical to the Moto X. So I think that must be the antenna. I don't know why that article concludes the Nexus 6 doesn't have the dynamic tuning, but it makes no sense.
Probably we'll have to wait for AnandTech to review the Nexus 6 to get an answer, since they're the only site that talks about these things and seems to actually understand all the technology behind them.

Good catch on the lack of the upper microphone hole in the photo. That does not seems like a good sign. I would not be surprised if the four microphone noise cancellation were left out of the Nexus 6, for a more standard two microphone solution. Motorola mainly developed this feature to allow Moto Voice to better isolate people's voice for voice commands in noisy places. Improved call quality is just a side benefit. Since the Nexus 6 won't have Moto Voice (just some lesser Android L version of it), perhaps they left it out. And maybe Motorola needed to negotiate with Google to keep some features to distinguish the Moto X. They wouldn't want the Nexus 6 to just outclass it in every way and make it seem like a lesser phone.
Also, as I note above, Google has really not given a s**t about noise cancellation since the Nexus One. To take such a big step backwards in technology is pretty bad. So it's completely believable that they can't be bothered on the Nexus 6 either and just used Qualcomm's Fluence again.

Some of the things you list as "TBA" we already know.
The Nexus 6 is QHD. The secondary camera is 2 MP.
I agree that there's no excuse for not using at least a 1/2.5 sensor in a premium phone these days, especially given the size of the Nexus 6. Samsung managed to squeeze a 1/2.5 sensor in the 8.1 mm thick S5. Sony got a 1/2.3 sensor in the 7.3 mm thick Z3. And besides, the curve on the back of the Nexus 6 and extra thickness, I think, is in part an excuse to fit the camera module in without having a camera hump (a camera hump in disguise, if you will). So why not take advantage of the extra room the 10 mm thickness allows and put in a larger sensor?
That being said, it does also seem like given the size of the phone, maybe they could have made it 9 or 8 mm thick at the center instead. No reason it should be thicker than the Nexus 5 and 4.

The QHD screen will not be as good as Samsung's one, especially if you compare the n6 to the Note 4. I read the new Super AMOLED QHD screen is a beast on the Note 4. Now for a slim design, there is a point where too thin is too thin. I don't like the route the iPhones are going (not that I will ever own one lol). I want to hold something, and not a paper-like object. I would say semi-check for design. It does slim toward the bottom, since it is curved (I think?). Everything else I agree with

You got a point. But it may just have the plastic separators, but not the capacitive thing that allows the antenna signal thing move according to where your hand position is. I mean, the device is so big, I doubt you'll be blocking the radio from getting signal

Don't forget Crystal Talk, which could have improved in the Moto X. I don't think the Nexus 6 will have it

To 0.0 and cb474 thank you for your feedback; for some reason I cant get the multi-quote to work.
I agree with the points you both made however.
I'm just hoping the Nexus 6 replacement next year gets a 1/2 camera at least and a 4 or 5mp at the front. By that time the One M8 would've been close to 2 years old and have had the 5mp front camera and the Z3 would be a year old with the 1/2.3 rear camera. Seriously no excuses for Nexus not to have a decent camera (especially in a large body).
For the 'premium' title they are going for, the phone has only a 'premium' processor (currently), premium amount of RAM (3gigs), premuim casing (plastic/aluminium) and a QHD screen (which I would not call premium as 1080P displays can look just as good or better; e.g. iPhone 6+). Qi charging, big battery, cameras, NFC etc are not really qualities only found on 'premium' devices so they cant be passed off as such. Thus in my opinion the phone really has two main premium traits going for it, not really justifiable and not what I would've done if I was in charge of putting together a new Nexus. Oh well, such is life.

Your hand is still going to touch a lot of the metal on the edge of the phone and attenuate the signal. The claim with the 2nd Gen Moto X is that Motorola would not have gone with the external metal antenna design, if they had not developed the dynamic tuning to counter problems usually found with this sort of antenna design. It's just hard for me to imagine they would transpose only half of the antenna design to the Nexus 6. The two things were designed to work together. But stupid things do often happen.

Blech, that would be so dumb if the Nexus 6 just has Qualcomm's Fluence noise cancellation.
Personally, I've been underwhelmed by Crystal Talk and found it to be not even as good as Fluence. On the 1st Gen Moto X it was really subpar, comparing it side by side to Fluence, let alone Audience. I know the 2nd Gen Moto X is supposed to be an improvement, but is that because of the Crystal Talk signal processing or just because of the four microphones?
And I still have experienced the 2nd Gen Moto X myself or seen it reviewed seriously by someone like AnandTech. I know there have been anecdotal reports that it's good. But I've pretty much seen that kind of claim about noise cancellation on every phone that has it, even when there are real and dramatic differences if you test it more objectively.
I also hadn't checked in a while, but there are some reports now in the thread I started on the 2nd Gen Moto X noise cancellation that aren't very positive: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/hows-four-microphone-noise-cancellation-t2896205. Those reports are making Crystal Talk sound like it has some of the same failings that I observed in the 1st Gen Moto X. It's a bit disappointing, sine I've been holding out high hopes for the four microphone solution. Maybe it doesn't matter how many microphones you have if you don't get the chip right, for the signal processing. The Audience chip on the Nexus One was the best I've seen with only two microphones.
(Audience does also have a three microphone solution, but I've never tried a phone that has it. On the other hand, the OnePlus One has three microphone noise cancellation that I think is Qualcomm's Fluence. It sounds like it has some of the problems of Fluence with two microphones. A lot of times they just add the extra microphone for stereo sound recording on video, more that because it is used to add a lot to the noise cancellation.)

I don't know if it is a manufacturing issue or a mic hole surrounding the camera module at about the 2 o'clock position? I see it in a couple of different images of the n6. (like the second from the right midnight blue) Could be a stretch

Edit: so I looked at the photos, and there seems to be a hole, like you said. Could be a mic. We'll never know until someone checks it out and/or explains. But idk why it would be in the flash ring

I'm just speculating, but I wonder if the distance from the other microphones matters, assuming this is a microphone.
My understanding is that part of how this technology works is that it times the difference between when background noise reaches the back of the phone and when it reaches the microphone by your mouth a split second later. That way it knows what sound is background noise (it reaches the back of the phone sooner) and what sound is your voice (it reaches the microphone by your mouth sooner). So perhaps since the Nexus 6 is so large, instead of positioning the microphone at the top back of the phone like on the 2nd Gen Moto X, it made more sense to put it by the camera ring. Here's hoping.
Another possibility is that, if it is a microphone, this it has something to do with recording sound in video. Having a microphone right by the lens could somehow allow the phone to properly center the sound on the video image? (I'm really totally making that up. And it doesn't make much sense since that's not how micing is done in high quality film making anyway. If fact, putting a microphone right by a lens is usually bad, because the mic picks up any sounds made by mechanical elements in the lens.)
Anyway, here's hoping there's some chance the Nexus 6 will get the four microphone noise cancellation.

just hoping
only thing making me hold back from getting the nexus 6 (aside from it not being for sale yet lol) is the mics thing and yes that matters to me cuz i ditched my htc one m8 for the moto x just for the voice control features but then the nexus 6 is announced along with android 5.0 lollipop with the "ok google" feature when screen is off which gave me hope and made me rethink whether to get moto x or wait for the nexus 6 so i am still waiting to see how many mics ... and as for customizing the launch phrase i am more than sure it will be ported over as a mod or rom feature by our amazing xda devs. community. one thing though thats keeping my hopes up that i just noticed today, despite the lack of the small hope on the back top along the metal frame of the nexus 6 unlike the moto x there is actually another hole on the camera frame but shows only in some pics not all of them but i guess it was removed while editing to make ring flash look more fancy
this is the one that's not showing cuz of the effect
here too its showing

More importantly (to me) improved call quality in noisy settings (your caller can here you better).
I'm trying to be hopeful about the possible mic spotted on the camera ring, but I don't really get why they would leave the four microphone thing out of the specs on the Motorola website (it's there in the specs for the 2nd Gen Moto X) and not promote the point, since it was promoted for the 2nd Gen Moto X when it came out.

I think I saw that comment and discounted it as making no sense and having no basis other than the author making an assumption.
The main mic for picking up one's voice may well be in the bottom speaker and this is sometimes done on phones. But it would make zero sense to put a mic in the top speaker that is pressed against your ear when talking on the phone and producing the sound of your caller. For noise cancellation purposes you want the mics on the back of the phone, facing away from your mouth and toward the source of background noise.
So that comment, to me, just seemed like someone who doesn't know what they're talking about making something up.
It would be interesting to know where each of the four microphones on the Moto X are.

Underwhelmed by Nexus 5

Order Nexus 5 as soon as it came out. I had high hopes for N5 from what I see on the internet. Great hardware spec and rather handsome looking.
My previous android phones were Acer Liquid, HTC Sensation, and HTC One S. I was choosing between blue HTC One and white Nexus 5 to replace my One S. Nexus 5's price and top spec won out.
When I finally held it in my hand, I thought "Ok, it doesn't feel as solid compared to One S but still not bad".
Then I started playing with it. Very smooth and fast, and the screen is gorgeous!
But after a month with it, I have an itching regret about getting it.
First is the speaker...I am no audiophile but damn...N5's speaker is really bad compared to One S. I turned the volume down to the last volume step and it is still pretty loud for me. I even edited framework.jar to increase the volume steps from 7 to 15 but even after this, it still sounded the same at the last volume step. I think the sound range of N5 speaker is very limited or something. One S speaker was able to sound very quiet but still clear.
Second is the battery life...drains very fast compared to One S. This could be due to the Full HD screen of N5 or relatively new KitKat. Another interpretation would be...Google is more honest about reporting the true battery life
Third is the LED...I think N5 has the ugliest looking LED on a phone I have seen. It's hard to describe but it is not fully rounded and with some other color mixed in on the peripheral of the LED.
I hope I don't come off as blasting N5 but with N5, I can tolerate it but not love it like my previous phones. Probably the last time I will get a LG built Nexus...from what I gather N4 also had horrible speaker and not so stellar battery life.
But getting a Nexus is about getting the latest Android. I really hope Google will go with someone else for Nexus 6, or I hope HTC's next year flagship will sell well so that there is more developer support.
Bummer. I'm really happy with mine. Well good luck to you.
cant put mine down. really love how it looks and feels. also its super fast with the nova launcher.
Battery life is good to me. I'm all stock and not rooted. I will believe you have good battery life once I seen your screenshots from the HTC.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Coming from a GS4 and never regretted the UPGRADE for a second

No reason regretting your purchase. No one is ever stuck with a phone when they have one that is worth some money. Sell the N5 and you will make more than enough to get a HTC ONE or trade someone strait up. It sounds like you are a HTC fan and not really fond of stock android and that is okay.
Have you heard the speakers after the 4.4.2 update? They sound MUCH better to me.
Legit...

Fair assessment as everyone is different. I think you should stick to HTC if you want excellent hardware. The Nexus program is all about software and how Google perceives what Android should be to the end user (speed, quick updates, no bloatware). There will always be sacrifices (hardware) to achieve the price point Google must accomplish. After the 4.4.1 or 4.4.2 depending when you received your OTA, the volume is quite loud but of course not as loud as the HTC One. The LED is brighter then the N4 version.
I'll trade straight up

I have an HTC One (Verizon) that I dropped as soon as the Nexus 5 came out. There's no looking back for me, as I previously had a Nexus 4 and left it for the One. I'm back on T-Mobile, and back with the Nexus line, and I love it. So if you're really looking to dump your N5 and get back to HTC, send me a PM. I'll trade you straight up. My HTC One is Mint.
I've owned a few htc and samsung phones, also a galaxy nexus and a nexus 4, and for me the nexus 5 is the best device (looks+performance) i ever owned. Period.

I somewhat agree with you. My first N5 had the speaker problem. I returned it and my replacement sounds good now. It is plenty loud, but I would like a little bit better sound quality. Instead of one speaker and one faux speaker, two speakers would have been nice. My battery lasts me all day with even heavy use. By far, the biggest battery hog is the screen. I use Lux for better brightness controls, and Tasker to turn on/off wifi, data, GPS, and other battery thieves automatically. See my screen shot.
As stated by others, having a Nexus is more about the operating system and not the hardware. I use a Nexus for all the custom mods and Roms. You can't have a better device than the latest Nexus for that.

I was in your shoes.. Decided to let the N5 go.. And I was a big fan of the N4. The size, the feel in hand, the bad cracking speaker, I just wasn't happy with it.

Well.... in regards to the feel of the phone.... a lot of people went with the black N5, simply because of the different back panel. The white N5's panel is more of a smooth plastic, whereas the black is what i can best describe as slightly rubberized. Does feel quite nice, at least to me, coming from a Motorola Atrix 4g and a Galaxy S3.
As for the built-in speaker.... it's rare to find a phone where they're reasonable.... HTC One aside. It only has one tiny speaker, but still sounds FAR better than my GS3 and Atrix did. But i don't really use the speaker for much... so that doesn't really bother me.
Battery life.... i dunno... i have to say i think it does fairly well. Lasts a fair bit longer than my S3 did with similar usage, and even on the stock ROM.
As for the LED.... it IS "fully rounded"... it just has a bit of a dithered outside edge. I'm assuming that's to try and make it appear as less of a beacon of light in a dark room when it's flashing (Like my S3's notification LED was). As for "colors mixed in along the edge".... uuh.... you DO understand how RGB LED's work, right? They essentially have three semiconductor sets that, when current is applied, light up in a different color. One red, one blue, one green. Which is usually why they can only really do variations on those three colors very well... not so much with a custom color. If you look at the LED when it's trying to recreate "white".... you'll see that around the edge, it looks like there's some red, green, and blue there, too. That's because there is. It's how they create white light with RGB LED's. It's probably not really visible on some other phones because they probably do more to hide the outside edges of the LED. Kinda like how HTC seems to have a thing for hiding it in the speaker/headphone grille.
I feel like a lot of people are buying this phone without doing enough homework to know what they're purchasing. If you've actually read a couple reviews of the phone or spent any amount of time in these forums, there should be absolutely no surprises. Either know what you're spending your $400 on or don't complain when it doesn't live up to your uninformed expectations.

To be fair, LG is having problems with quality control, and they also did do a sloppy job with the hardware design both which is causing quite a number of people to complain about the vibration loudness and lack of feedback which seems to worsen over time, and piping sound of the speakers and glue muffling the sound. Not to mention the issues with audio quality pointed out by Anandtech. These are things that can't be excused by the N5's low cost. The N5 does have the worst screen out of all the Android flagships with its crappy diagonal viewing angles, but better panels do cost more.
Anyway, I am happy with my Nexus 5, but any brand does have its fanboys, and they praise their brand and its products to the point of delusion the Nexus line is no exception. What I do find annoying are the clowns frowning on "newbs" and whining about how the Nexus line is only "understood" by developers and should be exclusive to developers. What a load of garbage...

Again, absolutely none of this is a surprise if you educate yourself about the product you're buying. It has nothing to do with fanboyism.
I will say, though, that I totally disagree with your assessment of the screen. I don't have a single use case that requires me to view the phone diagonally and off-axis. Viewing angles are great from the sides, top, and bottom, and that's all I need. To each his own.
You guys fail to realize this is a cheaply made $350 device. Stop comparing it to devices double the price

What DON'T you like about the 2014?

For those that now have their devices what do you not like?
For me there are 2 things..
1) I wish the screen was a little smaller. 5.0 would have been better IMO. I am just so used to using one hand to do everything on the screen that I now on occasion have to use two.
2) Changing DPI makes the stock Camera app crash and you can't make the Twist feature open the Google Camera instead.
I haven't found anything else yet that strikes me as a draw back.
that it doesnt have stereo sound, double sim card and sd card slot like the moto g 2014
i wish it had bigger storage capacity or an sd card slot. wireless charging would be appreciated as well. I don't have any problems with what the phone has but with what it doesn't have
Would have liked to have seen stereo speakers and a slightly larger battery, but neither is a huge concern. I'll still be getting this or maybe wait to see what the Nexus 6 brings.
No IR BLASTER. Conflicting reports on mhl out. Seems like a downgrade from my Note 3, but yet I still want it cuz it's new/different. Tough decision.
Leather had some dents in it on the back when I got it, speaker grills sticking up from the screen is a small agitation (it doesn't effect useage I just don't like it), Icons seem huge on this phone compared to any others I've had. Seems like the UI could've used a little more tweaking. Hoping for DPI adjustment in the future via root. Screen is "ok". Size is great, but the brightness/colors are meh.
Minimal things I don't like compared to what I do like, Overall I like it better than any other phone I have had this year (iPhone 6 plus, LG G3, m8, Lumia 930 to name a few). Hands down fastest real world usage of any phone I have used with or without Roms/kernels/etc..
Screen is a bit saturated.
Whites are a bit too warm.
Brightness at 100% is terrible in direct sunlight or a bright day.
Camera still needs some work.
The cheap vibration setup! There is no actual vibration to it, just a high pitched whine that sounds like something tearing itself up everytime it goes off. I also do not like how the grills stand up above the screen as someone else mentioned.
So far my only complaint is that the moto g is a fraction of the price and not that far off.
Also the camera does need work. A lot of work. Why can't we have a closer to iPhone 6 quality camera these days?
The moto voice is great. Just needs to be a little snappier.
No text that said Assembled in USA on the phone like the previous one.
Also so far the camera seems underwhelming for a flagship.

This is a very intelligent design because like the last year Moto X it have protrusions to raise the screen off the surface, but this will only help in specific drop scenarios, it won't help all the time. And it prevents scratch when you put the phone face down.

For number 2, if you install xposed and app settings, you can change the DPI for the camera back to 480. I also noticed that the Active Display is off too. So you'll want to chance com.motorola.motodisplay back to 480 too.
Few more pet peeves, but not deal killer.
No Moto Skip (nfc unlock) support, at least not yet.
Micro USB jack doesn't have a satisfying click when you insert a connector.
Lowest brightness is not dim enough, stops dimmingat 8/100.
Still can't control my music or see weather updates via Active (Moto) Display.

i agree with music controls. at least have the play/pause, next and previous track symbols there. it won't take up that much more battery imo
Display - love the new high res dpi, but the saturation and yellow-ish white is so annoying.
Other stuff...are to some degree, hard to complain about. Yes, it's Motorola's flagship, but the cost is significantly lower than the other flagships. Does that justify the weaker camera and less future proof specs...I'm still debating.
For those who have both the 2013 and 2014 Moto X - how does the 2014 screen brightness compare to the 2013 when using outdoors?
All of the test data I have seen says that the 2014 X is dimmer than the 2013 X, which was barely bright enough for me. I use my phone outside a lot.
It's no longer quad band.
My main complaints are size is big (I like cases), lack of storage options or SDcard, lack of removable battery and lack of wireless charging, but I guess I can't complain too much coming from the galaxy nexus
Size is my biggest gripe.
Don't care about SD card storage as I think it's old tech now. Cloud streaming is the way forward.
Probably the poor camera.

I wish Moto Maker came with metal backs.
The camera, although I think I've had better results with FV-5 and the stock Android camera app. Is it just me? Otherwise it seems way too grainy.
Also, Moto Voice doesn't seem to work in my car's bluetooth while the phone's in my pocket, as I have to bring the phone closer so it hears me. It'd be nice to use Moto X with bluetooth microphones.
Music control from the Moto Display would be awesome. And I think it would be neat to play playlists or artists from Google Play Music with Moto Voice, too, although I think that doesn't work because I'm on pt-BR)

Settings>Language & Input>Voice Search>Bluetooth Headset - Records audio through Bluetooth headset if available.
My only complaints with mine so far are:
No date on Active Display, only on Lockscreen.
Camera can't focus on anything closer than 6", so no macro shots.
Camera FV-5 can't set ISO in camera but it can in video, while both were possible on the 2013.
I'm not a fan of the raised speaker grills, though they're there to help protect a face-down device's screen from scratches.
Moto Voice background is now a battery-eating blue instead of the black it was on 2013.

what are things you wish it had?

I find myself living the sensors a lot. Waving over to check the screen and then waving over thinking it will close. Has any one else done this besides me? Do you think it might be a battery saver?
I wish it had the Moto X body with the Droid Turbo hardware and a mSD slot or at least the 64 GB option from the Nexus 6. Motorola just about build the perfect phone this year, but split it among 3 models.
yea
I wish it had a micro SD slot also. What about 5 inch. Display for one handed use? What about software they could update or install?
1) Better camera. One that was up to par with other flagships.
2) Dual speakers. Guess they saved that for the Nexus 6. What a tease.
3) Wireless charging.
4) Could do with a bigger battery, but at the same time, I understand the importance of form factor for a 5.2" screen.
That's about it, I guess. I would've been willing to pay $650 for these additional things.
Currently, the camera is the #1 thing holding me back from the Moto X. The other missing things I can live with.
Wireless charging, maybe... The battery is a non-issue for me as this little battery gets as much SOT as my G3 did with a much larger battery. I don't care about the camera and this speaker is way louder than my previous phones, so I can't complain there either. Oh, maybe an IR blaster for the TV might be nice... But that's it, and even then they're not huge deals for me. This thing is basically perfect for my needs.
iPhone 6's camera & wireless charging.
Then I'd be in heaven
32Gb is plenty for me, the battery gets me through the day just fine and dual speakers (while a nice addition) are not that important for a phone IMO, as long as a single speaker is loud & clear enough (which it is in this case)
S805 and better battery life. I would sell my iPhone 6 immediately for that.

+1 this. This is the biggest gripe I have right now. The Droid Turbo is ugly and it's capacitive buttons are were outdated 2 years ago, the Nexus 6 is too big, and the Moto X still isn't up to flagship status. That combined with the locked bootloaders of Verizon just make me angry. Droid Turbo hardware in a Moto X case and screen with a mSD slot for expandable storage and an unlockable bootloader? Count me in for one even if it were $800.
1: Unlockable bootloader (VZW)
2: Dual front facing speakers
3: Micro SD slot
4: Better camera with OIS
5: Wireless charging
From what I can tell the camera issue is software related not hardware. I read on a review that a guy used a different camera app from the market and the results were much better. I can't find the article ATM though.

Yup I think I read that it has the same actual camera module as some of the slightly older Samsungs? S3 S4 or whatever. They took good pictures so its definitely software.

I wish it had better reception on non-3G/4G bands- the standard GSM radio performance is pretty terrible on mine!
I'll add one more here. A slightly brighter screen for outside. While it's not terrible, it's not great either.

Agree with all the points. I could actually live with the current battery, I still manage 4hours screen on time with my use. I'm tempted for the Nexus 6, but the size put it out of the equation for me. I'm not really fond of the Droid Turbo design.
yes
It would be a flagship phone if it had:
Bigger battery
Expandable SD slot
Dual speakers
I like the size of the phone is classified under smartphone and not tablet (coming front note 4) so it fits better in the hand but still kind wish it was around 5 inches for a better one hand use. Would have been nice to have a headset made just for the phone Just saying...
Not to much to complain about though i love that it's software based so it gets updates faster.

Nexus 6 an upgrade over G3?

Just wanted some opinions about going to a N6 from a G3. I like to get fast updates and the larger amoled screen is enticing. I previously had a Note 3 and miss the amoled display.
Anyone coming from a G3 have any issues with the Nexus 6.
On Verizon.
my wife currently has a G3 and i feel that the N6 blows it away in every aspect except camera features (pictures can look better with the N6, but the performance is better with the G3 IMO). her G3 now feels tiny in my hands.

I used the g3 for along time its a great device. I bought a nexus 6 from swappa a few days ago. I ordered a nano sim thinking i could activate it on my old htc one max. I took my nano to micro sim adapter and put it in my onemax then i called verizon to activate it, since the max was a verizon device i didnt think there would be a problem, come to find out the rep said that the onemax wasnt compatible with a nano sim so she couldnt activate the sim card. Verizon will not activate a nexus 6! So instead i started filing down the sides of the micro sim being cautious as not to file the metal on the sim. I trimmed it perfect I had my doubts as to whether it would work or not. After I trimmed the micro sim I stuck it into my nexus 6 and turned it on, and bam baby its working.... im having absolutely no problems. Oh the same sim that I filed down also still works in my G3. So if I need to call Verizon I can just switch them out. If you are considering getting a nexus 6 I promise you will like it! Thats it. Hopefully if you get one,you won't have to trim you're sim card, if you do its not hard at all just be cautious.
Check out my bench mark test...that's what I'm talkn bout, that's the nexus 6 that says not verified
I am glad to hear the positive remarks so far. I have cut down sims by hand a couple of times with no problems.
How would you rate the screen? I have not seen one in person. I had the Nexus 4 which I liked but the memory went bad and now I can not write to the memory.
How does the camera work in low light?

Nice bench! My G3 gets 40186 on it. And I thought the G3 was fast when running Lollipop (Liquid Smooth ROM)!
So the N6 comes out on the 26 of this month. Very tempting...
Anyone hear of the next nexus yet. Ran out of numbers now!

Just wanted some opinions about going to a N6 from a G3. I like to get fast updates and the larger amoled screen is enticing. I previously had a Note 3 and miss the amoled display.
Anyone coming from a G3 have any issues with the Nexus 6.

I Had a G3 before I got my Nexus6 and I love love love the N6 over my old G3, when I 1st got my G3 I thought it was a huge phone and now it just feels little compared to this Beast!!! The screen looks so much better on the N6 I had them both set up to the same wallpaper and side by side the G3 screen looked so dim and un-colorful, it was an Easy Choice for me to move on, but on the down side the G3 camera is Great compared to the N6 Google camera that was my only issue

The nexus is freggin awesome! I will not own a device that's carrier branded if I can help it. Also every device iv owned has been rootable and the bootloader unlockable. I won't have it any other way. Pssst, get the Nexus 6 [emoji6]

The screen size is perfect its not to big or bulky. Also when outdoors you don't have to block the sun light with you're hand like with most devices, I don't have any problems at all seeing my screen outdoors, no glare or squinting. And the dual front facing speakers are awesome, the sound is crisp and the call quality is very clear. Iv only had my N6 for about 3 days and so far its been worth every penny.

I ran a bench mark on my g3 earlier today and only scored 37726. I can't figure out why its reading so slow. Everyone else has scores over 40000....hmm
Spec wise, I'd actually call it a wash.
The G3 has a better screen (LCD means REAL 2560x1440, whereas our AMOLED is only 2560x1440 in the GREEN channel. R and B channels are only 2560x720).
LCD's are also better at accurately reproducing color.
5.5 is a bit more comfortable of a size compared to the full 6", but that is a matter of personal preference.
If you're comparing the 32GB G3 to the 32GB N6, RAM and storage SIZE are the same.
The SoC on the N6 is a lot better. The N6's SD805 has a MUCH wider memory bus. That translates into being a lot faster.
Finally, of course, the G3 has an sdcard slot.
The real advantage of the N6 is the fact that it is supported DIRECTLY by AOSP.

The screen part of ips vs amoled I'll agree with.
The screen size is subjective. After using the phone for a couple weeks you begin to appreciate the size much more. I didn't think I'd like 5.95 but I've gotten used to it and it's best thing to happen.
The one thing you forgot to mention is the fact that the nexus 6 also have dual front facing speakers which is a clear win for the nexus 6 if you do any media consumption. It's a no brainer that if a person consumes media, the nexus 6 is the way to go.
Oh yeah, nexus 6 is supported by qualcomm quick charging 2.0 which charges your battery faster. Another plus to the nexus.
Nexus devices are better in terms of development support as well so if you're into flashing custom roms and kernels, then nexus devices won't disappoint you in that department.

-True however I do kind of like the over saturated colors on amoled screens. Must be my kid side coming out!

-True the G3 is very easy to keep in my pocket. Even the front pocket.

-Not much to say about that.

-This is probably the biggest factor for me. I Like the G3 but I get tired of dealing with bugs with non-official builds. Not to say the developers are great on the G3 and maybe the bugs will completely disappear on 5.0 roms.
I really want to see the N6 in person I guess. I know it has been a while since Verizon has had a Nexus phone and wonder how the updates are going to work with Verizon. Who would I be getting them from and when? Will it have a locked bootloader?
I think I have to see what happens with it when people start getting them from Verizon.
How has the signal quality been with Verizon on the N6 compared to the g3?

I wouldn't really call that a big benefit. G3 does quick charge 1. The 2.0 difference really only operates VERY briefly when the battery level is EXTREMELY low. It also promises reduced battery lifespan. Given the size of the battery on the thing and the fact that most people need around 7 hours of sleep every night, slow charge really is the best thing.

People are using N6 on Verizon already. You don't need to buy it from them -- buy it from google play store, drop in your verizon sim, and enjoy. Updates straight from Google.

How does having two speakers "suck?"
When HTC launched the One series with dual front facing speakers, that pretty much set up the meta. From this point onward, phones shouldn't even be releasing speakers that aren't on the front. Having one speaker to the top/bottom or left/right is pretty much the new meta.
It is a big benefit, if you're in need of a "quick charge." For example, you come home from work/school and only have 15-20 minutes to get changed and whatever before you have to head out again. If you have Quick Charge 2.0 then your phone will get massive amounts of battery life in that time period when compared to a device using Quick Charge 1.0. And I personally don't charge my phone over night, I leave it on the charger and when it's done charging i unplug it and then get ready to go to sleep. Nevertheless, qualcomm quick charge 2.0 is more futureproof over quick charge 1.0 and is far superior technology.
Not really you just broadly said its supported by AOSP. A device being supported by AOSP doesn't essentially mean you'll have great developer support in the long-run. Take a look at the Nexus tablet devices (e.g. Nexus 7 2013) not much traffic is made in those forums.

I think he just means the speakers aren't very good ones, regardless of being front facing. That said, I disagree. Best speakers I've had on a phone.
I disagree as well. Not as good as the m8, but they don't suck.

I didn't say that the speaker COUNT sucks, I said that the speaker QUALITY sucks.
1 crap speaker: crap sound.
2 crap speakers: stereo crap sound.
There's only so much you can do, when you build a speaker in the space of a pencil eraser. If you want good sound, you still need headphones.

The "technology" is the same. Its just a higher voltage. But like I mentioned, the battery has to be VERY low for the 12v to kick in, and then it only kicks in VERY BRIEFLY, then falls back to 9v.
If you are just getting home from work/school for a few moments, your battery will still be 60% or higher. IT WILL NOT SUPPLY 12 VOLTS!!!! To get that, it has to be nearly shutting off from being dead.
Not really you just broadly said its supported by AOSP. A device being supported by AOSP doesn't essentially mean you'll have great developer support in the long-run. Take a look at the Nexus tablet devices (e.g. Nexus 7 2013) not much traffic is made in those forums.

"those forums" Just what "forums" are you talking about? XDA? And what "developers" are you talking about? The developers *I* am referring to are those who WORK FOR GOOGLE.
I.e., you DO NOT NEED kiddy developers like cyanogenmod to build AOSP for a device that is DIRECTLY SUPPORTED BY GOOGLE. You just need to follow the instructions: https://source.android.com/source/building-devices.html ** look: they've got build instructions all the way back to Nexus S. Google THEMSELVES provide full system builds as far back as Nexus 7/2012 <-- TWENTY-TWELVE.

Well 2 speakers on the front is usually better then one on the back. At least it is stereo sound and facing the correct direction.
The good thing about aosp support is less bugs. Still waiting for some rather annoying bugs to be fixed on the G3.

Moto Z2 Force $500 @ T-Mobile!

It's a beautiful device. I have NO regrets whatsoever! I'm rooted and loving it!
Picked mine up a few days ago. The screen scratches very easily:crying: Does anyone know of a good screen protector on Amazon? Other then that it is an excellent phone The performance is great as well as the battery life especially considering the small battery.
I picked up a few of these, for the family and I am working my way through the device. Battery life is great, BUT I think some CPU throttling is going, by Lenovo design--- as my device renders websites, forum threads (xda labs/Tapatalk) VERY slow. Tidal streaming take 20-30 seconds to buffer the first song in HiFi mode. This is very different than any of my other Samsung, LG,Sony phones on the same network, same plan, same city etc. The CPU and 4GB ram should not be this slow, especially when the phone transitions from app to app quickly and scrolling is very fast.
Screen is great at the $500 price, the DPI should be 480 out the box though. 640 is far to big. Also with the huge bezels, they should have made the navbar smaller, directly above the huge lower bezel. Or just capacitive buttons in the huge bottom bezel, like old Samsung devices. It should not be big ole navbar, mated to a big ole bezel [emoji38]
The music/podcast speaker output is awesome for such a thin device and only one speaker. The phone call speaker output is subpar, though.
The button placement is great, but I keep wanting to use the Motorola circle on the back as the finger print sensor [emoji38]. Its in the PERFECT rear position where my fingers sits when holding the phone rt handed.
The audio out dongle is ok, but the noise floor is pretty bad ( for those music based). It works, but this is NOT a multimedia device if that is your focus. Some background hissing, and electronic background noise, almost like a ground issue in the port. I am using some pretty sensitive iems though. If you are using $20 dollar headphones, doubt you would mind.
Bluetooth strength is good, but this output also suffers from the slight interruptions, here and there. Just small minute sound buckling, not full on stopping the songs. It's as if the phone falls out of range for a millisecond. Again I think this is a software background ram/cpu management design.
Also the notifications (silent or sound on mode), interrupt music pretty hard. That's another reason I think the software is throttling the cpu's pretty hard.
Great job TMobile for the unlocked bootloader with a US snapdragon. This may be the only option for rooting a USA 835 CPU based device.
Rooting Kills the warranty though, So I may not root my other devices. As I found out last night, even if you RELOCK the bootloader, the first screen still notifies you of a different OS. Basically no way to return to TMobile for a warranty fix, if something does fail. Early adopters might want to wait a bit to see if a Dev can mask the unlock/relock black screen back to full stock.
Signal strength is great, in my area. The size (slimness) and weight (super light) feel of the phone is amazing for all that's in this phone.
Camera loads fast, images are just OK, but the auto focus speed it good. Not great, just good.
This is basically a OnePlus 5, without the bubble scrolling issue [emoji38].
Back to enjoying a great, low priced, high spec option. Couple this with the projector mod/free offer, this is an AWESOME deal.

tl;dr
most of the things you are complaining or pointing out can and just might be updated or fixed in a custom rom (cpu, speaker output, audio, bluetooth, camera)
my dpi was set at 360 out of the box and can be changed in Developer options/Smallest width
when you get an unlock code from Motorola it states that by just getting the code you void the warranty so yeah, we know that going in
people put too much in the bezel thing, sure an edge to edge screen is cool, but not a game changer (for me anyways). i was gonna get an LG G6 or V30 simply for the fact that both phones are almost the exact same size as my G4 but with a bigger screen. it was basically the price drop and the free projector that pulled me over to the Z2 Force, plus when i tried the camera and saw how fast it was, that helped too

really? it has 3 reviews, 2 of them are 5 stars and 1 is 1 star cause the guy didnt like the fact that it did not cover the entire screen. i wouldnt call that "very bad ratings"
search Amazon or google, im sure you can find one that suits you
The Verizon Flexible Glass Display Protector is the best.
I had last years version on my Moto Z Force Droid on Verizon and it never had an issue.
I have this year's version on my T-Mobile Moto Z2 Force and it works great.
I actually am on my 3rd Z2. First one was pre-ordered and would not connect to voice mail so Tmo replaced it.
2nd one was fine other than the texting issue on Tmo, but I fell for the hype and Jumped to the Note 8.
A week and a half later I jumped back to the Z2 Force and got it for $500
I could kick myself for not waiting to get this until T-Mobile dropped the price. :/
The one thing that's really impressed me with this phone is the battery life, given the smaller (compared with the last Z2) nonremovable battery.
