Is there a diag mode - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a diags mode to test the sensors on the 2014 Moto X?
My lower IR ports don't seem to activate my screen as it was when I got the phone earlier this week.
When I wave across the phone still works but not when I reach from the lower side of the phone.
Sorry I think I got this in the wrong bucket.
Sent from my XT1095 using Tapatalk

I noticed it too. I think it started after the moto voice update which doesn't make much sense. It would make sense for it to be a moto actions update, but I didn't see that it got updated on the play store.
It used to be really sensitive and now your hand has to go over the top of the phone.

I may uninstall the update to see if it come back.

Yes, if you go to the boot loader.

What option there will get me to the diags?
Thanks for the help

the same thing happens to my phone also
i called motorola and they said that this is normal
Sent from my XT1092

My phone has always only activated when I move over / within view of the camera (upper right).
I suspect those dots are not IR sensors, just IR lights that allow the camera to see in the dark.

I could not find any diagnostic tools in the boot loader

I remember showing my coworkers the day I got the phone when you reach for the phone from the lower edge it would light up the screen but then I got a bunch of Motorola update and a sensor firmware update
Didn't really mess with it until now and I noticed its not working. The wave to silence still works and it also lights up the screen.
Sent from my XT1095 using Tapatalk

Have uninstalled the update minus the sensor firmware update that I remember getting.
I can not get the lower sensors to make the screen to come on when reaching for the phone.
Sent from my XT1095 using Tapatalk

I tried that as well, and no luck. It must have been that sensor firmware update.

The lower IR "ports" are just emitters and are not actually sensors. The sensor is on the top of the phone. The emitters bathe your hand in IR, and the sensor detects it, so if your hand is too close to the bottom of the phone, the sensor won't be able to see it. There is nothing wrong with your phone.

[Q] Proximity Sensor issue...

Ok so I am having an issue where the screen will just black out on a call as soon as I call. It does it most of the time. I know when a screen is replaced you can have issues but this has ever been worked on besides a new battery. The phone is Rooted, unlocked bootloader and running Pacman on it. Anyone have this issue, when I search I see the old Atrix had Prox issues but nothing really on the HD. I know some phones allow you to adjust the Prox. I wish this phone had a service mode like the S3's and Notes that allowed me to see how the Prox is adjusted. LOL
Either way just wanted to know if anyone has had or knows of an issue with these devices and the Prox not working properly.
Exactly same issue here, but no idea about solution :/
Enviado desde mi MB886 usando Tapatalk 2
Get a Market app such as CPU-Z among others and check if your sensor is working by bringing your finger close to it.
I'm not sure, but i think most 4.2 ROMs are doing this, and, I have a proximity sensor issue with another phone(HTC One), it does not know when its on your face and your face pushes buttons. For me, just push the power button a couple times and it comes back.
For me on PAC, this is a difficult issue to mess with because it only effects my first call after a full wipe & install -- works just fine 2nd call and on.

If you haven't solved it already. There you go.
Pretty sure he's solved it lol.

[Q] Maps orientation weirdness - Compass/magnetometer bug?

Anyone having issues with the compass orientation in Google Maps? I've tried numerous sensor testing apps, and apart from noticing the usual random compass confusion (which is easily fixed), I haven't noticed anything wrong with the readings but am not sure how to interpret them (magnetometer)...
It's like the compass gets stuck off-center sometimes, and the arrow seems to be confusing magnetic north*/ true north...
I've searched forums and a lot of people seem to be experiencing this but not on the Moto X. I'm still in the 14-day return window but would rather keep it as I've loaded a ton of stuff on it... any suggestions?
14 days and less than 30 minutes air time on rogers I believe
Sent on my Moto X
Yes but it would be an exchange and not a return. I don't have a Rogers account either, I bought the phone outright.

Having the same issue. Tried several different apps all seem to be off. I have the 32gb dev edition on Verizon. What was the verdict?
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk
I, too, have had problems with the compass on my Verizon Developer Edition moto x. Any time I launch Maps or the GPS Status & Toolbox app it takes a minute or so for the compass to begin showing the correct (or nearly correct) heading and to keep up with me when I rotate to face different directions.
I've noticed that when I zoom in or out on a map, if I twist my fingers a little while pinch or zoom, it takes the 'north up' orientation off and shows a compass pointer near the upper right corner. Touching that pointer resets the orientation as north up.

Been all over trying to fix this issue. I'm very surprised no one has has made it a bigger issue. Frustrates the hell outta me. Im returning my moto x dev edition and already ordered another one in hopes that it may just be a defective unit, though I doubt it. On the bright side I originally bought the phone for $550. Now that I'm returning I'm saving $100 because the price went down over the new year

I am having a number of issues with Maps. I have a hair-brained theory (that is all it is at this point) that it is caused by a dedicated location service api for moto's apps bumping heads with the one Google (and other apps) use. The end result is that the GPS keeps dropping the fix and reestablishing it. When this happens I can see my location on the map jump in steps every few seconds instead of smooth movement.
Most of the time it will eventually will clear itself, other times toggling GPS or rebooting the phone is necessary.
Guess I am still waiting for my first Android phone without major issues. )c:
I have the same compass issue. Apps like GPS Status take a long time to get the compass working and then it is unreliable even after following the calibration routine. Phone Tester also takes a long time to get a stable reading on the compass and even then its unreliable. Same with other apps from the Play store - if they work at all. By unreliable I mean it does not respond correctly to the phone being rotated while flat on a table with no metal or held in my hand. But Google Sky works great and always has the correct compass heading.
I never had this issue on my previous phones (Droid Eris, HTC Incredible, Droid Razr M). I never tested the compass on my Moto X DE VZW under 4.2.2 since my phone updated immediately after activating. I wonder if it worked correctly under 4.2.2 and the flakiness is a 4.4 issue? I thought about returning my phone due to this issue but the other user with a Moto X VZW (non-DE) at work has the same issue.
I doesn't bother me aside than it doesn't work as a reliable compass while I'm not moving and that I expect the hardware/software I paid for to function properly. Would be nice if it was fixed in the future - hopefully near future!

I'm also having this issue. Was there any resolution? Still within my 14 days so I think I may return it.
FYI this problem is still greatly effecting my ability to navigate manually when using GPS to point in the correct cardinal direction of a destination

I also have the same issue on Rogers XT1058. Stock ROM/Kernel. At my work, the arrow is pointing south instead of North...
On US Cellular, also have this problem. Can be very frustrating. Seems to work better if I'm out away from any kind of interference (my car, house, etc). I was testing it by comparing GPS status compass to my actual compass, if I had them too close to each other they would impact each other.

Ok Google not working while screen off and charging

Like the title says. When the phone is screen off but plugged in, OK Google isn't recognized. Works fine if screen is on. In my Google / Voice settings I have turned on Say Ok Google Anytime and Trusted Voice to unlock.
It worked fine on my LG G3 previously before I came to the 3T.
Any ideas?

For me also not works
This is proving to be very annoying.
I tried the Now Launcher to see if it would fix this problem (I was going to use it anyway since autorotate seems broken with stock Launcher).
Now launcher doesn't change the situation. Does anybody have a work-around? This is the first phone/os that I have had this problem with.
Help!

When i tried, it says there is locked screen (i have fingerprinted lock screen), but when i recognized and accepted, it had no reaction. Do you tried only swiped lock screen?
Tried a bunch of things. When screen is off (but charging)I haven't found any combination of settings that work. I use a fingerprint but noticed problem before setting up the fingerprint. Also have set that my voice can be trusted to unlock; also in my car the phone is unlocked as a trusted Bluetooth device.

For me sometimes it has vibration, sometimes it says that phone are locked. But still not works "ok google" on black screen
I guess what does it means. When you press unlcok button, if there is swipe or something, it unlocks device when you say "ok google"
I have the same problem..ok Google does not work when the screen is off..bt works fine when the screen is on
I've asked this question over in the OnePlus community forum on OnePlus.net. I don't think the readership there is as savvy as here though. I've already gotten some patently wrong answers. I'm still hoping someone can suggest a fix or at least work-around.

I also would like to use OK Google with the screen off.
This has been driving me a bit crazy. I can't imagine what is blocking it from working. Glad to hear it isn't just me experiencing it... At least I am not alone.
I can't imagine it is a technology gap on the phone... That would only apply to screen off / not charging cases. Microphone certainly can work with screen off... For example talking on phone the screen shuts off in proximity to the head. And it's not a power issue, since this use case includes charging.
Somewhere there must be a hidden toggle for some feature set the wrong way.
Anybody have skills to investigate?

you can't.
always listening isn't enabled on our phone (something about licensing with qualcomm).
I don't need always listening... I need listening while charging. Even phones from 5 years ago do this...

Yes, my nexus from years ago can do it.
but no, our 3T will NOT do it.

This kind of makes hands-free driving and home voice actions pointless.

Thanks for the reply. What exactly isn't enabled... or better asked, at what level is it not enabled? The SnapDragon 821 has support for it. So, perhaps this will come in an update or a custom ROM. Or is there some other layer which needs to be developed that OP currently hasn't?
It's beyond shocking that a major feature ... voice response while driving ... would be crippled in a recent model phone. And, I am ignorant of what exactly needs to work. The microphone works fine when the screen is off, and I have no concerns about battery performance when plugged in and charging, so an app should be able to be told to listen to the microphone under these circumstances.
Any further info about what's missing would be greatly appreciated!
It worked for a short time for me. I could say, "ok google" with the screen off, but I'm guessing the app updated or a rom changed one little thing and now it's a pain in the ass.

Yes, the 821 has support for always listening. However, the phone company (OnePlus) has to pay the SOC company (qualcomm) in order to use always listening (more on always listening later). Is it possible for a developer to somehow enable it? Yes. As seen with the Ok Snapdragon concept with the nexus 4, we can indeed enable it. However due to legal issues, that mod was never released.
Another reason is marketing. Motorola was able to promote their Moto X Pure so much because it had their custom "Ok Google" thingiemajig. If every phone had always listening, why buy a nexus / pixel / moto?
If you want the phone to listen and respond to your voice actions while the screen is off, regardless of whether or not it's plugged in, you need always listening. Unless you're in a call, of course.
I've heard that PA and/or CM managed to make a hackaround this for other OP phones, but I cannot confirm that it actually exists as I have never looked into it.
Great explanation. Thank you

[Moto G6+] "Approach for Moto Display" doesn't work for me

"Approach for Moto Display" doesn't work for me, I know that this device have this feature but doesn't work for me =\, I was wondering if anyone else who has this device also has this problem and has been able to solve
Sorry for my bad English
It works for me, there are two situations where the display activates.
1. I reach for the device, or rather have may hand 3-5 cm above the display.
2. The device is laying on the flat surface, and is picked up.
Does neither of these scenario work for you?

Note 9 Compass issues

Have you checked or compared your compass against older or other devices?
My new Note9 compass is about 10° off (counter clock wise), a problem my old samsung devices did not have. Note 8 and S8+ for example are all around +-2°.
I can easily notice this in google maps, because if I turn on the function which turns the display view according to the direction you are looking, its always off.
How exact is your Note9 compass compared to Note8 (or other devices)?

I use GPS Status & Toolbox from EclipSim since years... Nice program!!
Besides the comparison to Note8, is your Note9 accurate?
Another issue is that my Note9 looses it's Compass Calibration frequently. You can check this also with GPS Toolbox (there is a point for compass calibration) or the service menu (*#0*# in the dialer, the sensors, if it shows a blue "3" besides the compass it is calibrated).
Inside the service menu, can you please also test the function "grip sensor"? On my device it "detects" only when I touch the bottom of my device, it triggers even when my finger is a few mm away from the bottom. Does your device the same?
Thank you!!

The grip sensor behaves similar to yours. If I place my hand near the USB charger socket it will engage without touching it.
In respect to the service menu, I chose sensors test and looked under magnetic . I didn't see a blue "3". I did see a round black circle with a red line inside of it?

Thank you!! I have been at a local store today and all of the devices there show similar behavior with the touch sensor.
The redine tells you that your compass is not calibrated, a calibrated one would have a blue line with a "3" beneath it.
Calibrate your compass while at this screen (make the "8-pattern" with the phone in the air and rotate it along all 3 axis until you have the 3 and a blue line).
Then, you can check two things: how long does the phone stays calibrated (normally it should for a long time, until next reboot or even more), and if the heading it shows is right.
For me it's constantly off at about 10 degrees, and it jumps weirdly around.
Also, after 1-2h my calibration is gone and I would have to recalibrate...
On my Note 8 this was much better!
What do other Note 9 users say, how is your compass accuracy or calibration persisting?

So you want to say that you don't get any calibration at all? Because this works for me every time. My. problem is that the compass is off even if calibrated, and that the calibration does not stay very long until I would again have to calibrate...
It could be that you have to make really weird movements for the calibration to work, you can also try a restart!
If you get never ever any calibration then I would suggest you to swap your device, or hope that it is a software error.
I'm also unsure if I should swap because of this, or if it could be fixed with an update in the future.
For that it would be really helpful to know if there are users out there, whom Note 9 compass works flawless... The its most probably NOT software/firmware related, and we would have to exchange devices...
So please @All, let us know how well your compass works!!

Ok got it calibrated after a another few mins and also turning phone upside down and doing the figure of 8. Did the same to wife's note 8 and placed them next to each other. Once calibrated, they both show slightly different lines on the graphic service menu , where the 3 is. My note 9 for example line was straight and the note was slightly at a approx 10 degree angle to the left.
