[Q] Which custom rom are you looking forward to running? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Back when I had a galaxy nexus, I really enjoyed paranoid. What are you looking forward to flashing?

ubuntu touch

I'm actually rocking Mahdi 2.9 in my nexus 4, so the next one I'm waiting for is its successor, the euphoria-os. Nice performance, lot of features and no bugs.

Sounds interesting. Will have a look. Ubuntu touch looks fun, too. Use it as your daily driver?

Likely going to go for Stock+Xposed (when ART Support finally rolls out) with a few other mods and a Custom Kernel.
That said, if I would be tempted to go for any Custom ROM, it would be only if they offer a Dark theme version to complement the AMOLED display. That said there might be a few existing workarounds that may exist for stock in due time that do not need flashing a whole new ROM for it.

Stock plus exposed of that ever happens. Otherwise I'll try around. my fav was aokp for a couple years

My own

Paranoid with a dark theme ..... Then miui ..... Then dirtyunicorn etc on down the line with some multi boot in there

AOKP or CM, not quite sure yet. Only using CM on my S4 because AOKP support for the device is dead now.
Sent from my Cyanogenified S4.

Back in Gnex days there was a rom called Sourcery. BEST EVER! More customizations than you could begin to imagine. Fantasy and Steam punk boot animations and themes. Bunches of custom softkey icons. Inverted gapps. And pretty stable, too. Haven't found anything since that even comes close.
Running Paranoid on my Nexus 7 currently. Hyperdrive on my GS4 at present.

Vanir, FTW!!!

Slim,Carbon,AOKP,Vanir,Beanstalk, etc.
I've been dealing with a locked down Note 3 for the past 12 months. Can't wait to get back on ALL these ROMS. ?

I want to run Carbon, badly. Been enjoying it for a year now on my l900

Unless we get a version of the Moto X 2014 Lollipop running for the 6, I will be staying on stock.
And thats only for Moto Display...

Hopefully AOSP Purity! Awesomeness

Quite literally all of them at least once.

Bring the Swagger!
but really can't decide. I'll probably flip between AOKP, PA, and CM. Been running CM on the OPO for a while so I'm used to it. Time to see what the others have now.

I'm not going to lie... This device could actually provide a pretty reasonable use case for Ubuntu Touch. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for it.

Sourcery has been a stellar ROM for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately I think the team has gone into "development hibernation", and don't plan on building any more. Hopefully they reemerge.

hoping we get some form of multiwindow like the nexus 5 had.. if so and its stable then whatever rom that will be. otherwise i'd love me some stable AOKP

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the PA team have multi-window earmarked as their next big project. They implemented this card stack multitasking recent apps function last year (long before Lollipop was released), and they're always coming up with new stuff. PA is always one step ahead imo, and they're easily the most progressive development team around right now.

Which ROM are you running?

I'm interested to see which ROM everyone is running, and to see some recommendations.
paranoid android with the latest monty kernel. pure excellence
BAMF Rom pretty decent and its pretty stock with a few tweaks..
CM10. Pretty stable for the most part

I'll play. I came from two HTC devices. I thought CM was the solution to everything. The first thing I did was install every CM rom looking for the best one. None were as good as stock. More features, yes, but not as stable and choppier performance. Turns out CM is the solution to sense because it's really the closest you can get to pure Google on a Sense-based device.
I've made the rounds trying everything else out there the last week or two. The best rom I've run in terms of stability and performance is Pure AOSP. It's what I thought I had been trying to get when I tried the CM roms. It really is pure Google.

i always thought that CM was always buggy and not top performance, but when i finally tried it out on my nexus it wasent to bad. But i do agree that stock is faster in performance, and i really like AOKP which has more features i think, and is better performance, but i think that roms based off of mostly stock with a few features will get you the best performance and battery life.
Glazed ROM, Very fast, I like the ability to use Edge swipe to hide the system bar, turn on /off animations looks awesome with cobalt donate theme.
Glazed JellyBean- fast and stable, no non-working apps or hardware issues.

Nice thing about the stock ROM for the N7 is it doesn't suck (once rooted).
Some tablets have such poor factory ROM's that you're pretty much required to run 2nd party ROM's, but for most users- the stock ROM for the N7 is good enough and will do just fine.
Jr6 ROM, based on android jellybean 4.1.1
I'm stock & rooted on my N7 and my GSM GNex... For the 1st time in as long as I can remember, I don't feel the need for a custom ROM with JB 4.1.1 running so smoothly..
Stock and rooted. I haven't found a reason to try another rom yet.
Stock rooted with Motley's kernel running at 1.6 GHz. I agree with the other guys, I haven't felt the need to run a custom ROM (yet). JB is really smooth and the other ROMs don't seem to provide any other amazing features over the stock ROM. Once all the ROMs get out of alpha/beta I may be tempted to switch.

going ahead and trying the glazed rom and see how it works, seems the most complete or out of beta/alpha stage

[Discussion] why use any rom other than cm 10.1?

I've been using android for a few years and for skinned phones sometimes the stock os or ROMs based off of it has some advantages. For example the galaxy note too have the spen FULLY functional and have all the apps associated with it you need a stock based ROM. But for out nexus 4s cm seems to be the only choice. Many other ROMs are based off of it kernel devs use there commits. Cm is usually first and the most stable with updates and mods. I've had cm on all my phones so just wondering what your views are. Is there any real benefit to using any ROM other than cm? Honestly to me the stability is better than anything else out there.... Thanks
Paranoid Android. The hybrid options are amazing and it is as stable as CM... Even more so for me as I had a hiccup with CM.
Honestly, though, it's not all about stability, but the options, the look, the feel, and trying something different. CM is great, but it's the ROM everyone uses... Like a second stock ROM. It becomes boring...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
CM is great if it is available. However, they have been known to drop support for phones (the G2 comes to mind), and they of course don't support every phone. I imagine the Nexus phones will be likely to be well-supported. Of course, CM isn't stable yet on the Nexus 4 - and looking at the track record for the Nexus 7 it could be months before it is.
For me stability is a key feature. I'm not sure I'd call CM completely stable, but it is far more disciplined than most of the alternatives. I'd really only call a release stable if it has been in beta for at least a week or two, and there are no significant changes between the beta and stable versions. I've yet to see CM show that kind of discipline, but you can get the same effect by just holding back on new releases for a few weeks, monitoring the bugs/forums, and then picking a nightly build that looks to have all the issues worked out.
I think the modding community has suffered from the platform diversity. Once upon a time everybody owned an HTC Dream and there was some REALLY good software for it as a result. Now it seems like no two developers own the same phone, and it shows.
This looks like a "What's the best ROM?" thread to me. You also seem to be slagging off the other developers.
The bottom line is everybody has their own opinions, read each respective ROM's thread, flash it and make up your own mind. If you're interest in how many people are using a ROM, sort the forum by the "Stats" column.

Let the RomGames begin!!

So I know its just out and google needs to release the 4.4 code, but aren't we all exited for ROMS!!!!!! So let the developers start doing their magic and giving it to us on the nexus 5...
What ROM are you most exited to see, and what are your most favourite features about the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4.
Happy posting
Don't forget, if you choose other, tell us which Rom you are looking forward to!!
NOTE!!! 1. I didn't have a nexus 4, so i don't know all the Roms and everything about them, and I own an S4 I9500, so you can know how I fell about custom Roms :/
2. I AM NOT SAYING ONE ROM IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER. This is just asking for opinions on what are you exited to see the most.
looking forward to some Paranoid Android custom DPI settings whoooooo
Looking forward to cm

Cyan or Carbon.
I honestly don't like any of the others. Loved Cyan on my N1, and NS. Loved Carbon on my N4. Can't wait to see what they're both like on the N5.
Cyan is mostly stable, and coming with less features. And Carbon is like the younger CM(mostly stable, with tons of features).
be good to see what direction PA is going to go as they said starting 4.4 they were changing direction at how they do things

Dont know if they will have a ROM for the N5 so I´ll try Carbon for my first time (heard a loft of good things about it)
You actually are saying which ROM is better. Why would anyone be "excited" for a inferior ROM?

AOSP vs CM11 - Speed and Stability

Hey all! I'm building a ROM and was wondering what your thoughts were on speed and stability on CM vs AOSP. From my experience, CM is faster but not as stable, and AOSP isn't as fast but is stable.
Please vote and/or comment on your thoughts!
CM tends to have worse battery, in my experience

Here are my beliefs (anyone feel free to correct me):
AOSP is rock solid (usually). It's not the fastest, but that can be fixed. It lacks features.
CM on the other hand isn't the most solid base, but they're very good about fixing bugs. They've got (arguably) one of the largest developer teams working on an aftermarket firmware. They do have more features as well.
What you need to answer is this: How clean of a base do you want to start off with? Do you want to go for AOSP and market it as simple and close to stock with hand-picked features and optimizations? Or do you want to start off with a CM base, having features that are now nearly ubiquitously considered "necessary"?

I've never experienced this, but I can see it happening because of the smaller range of kernels (since it's CAF).

Valid points, I see CyanogenMod being geared as much more developer friendly and extensible, they even have better documentation for AOSP's tools than AOSP does
I want the ROM to be stable and fast, but also ready for customization, where I see AOSP not being very extensible.
So speed and stability is democracy now?
Actually if you are building a ROM from source, you are better off starting with aosp and merging the caf patches then go from there. You can look at patch commits/gerrit to see how to add in the features that you want since the code is normally available to see and will give you what line and all. In the process, you have something to call your own and learn the coding structure and source which is invaluable

cm was fast until about mid 2012. then they just started piling on as much as possible into the rom and it has been slower since. when steve(cyanogen) used to spend much time working on cm kernel, thats when cm was known for speed, back in the beginning and a little after cm started. back then, they werent about feature, more about minimalism. now its all about feature.
AOSP>CM
Always.
At any aspect.
CM has become so low and weak ROM since 2013. In the past it was the fastest and the most non-bull**** custom firmware but now as it's available for so many devices it's become sluggish, slow and the quality doesn't even exist. Another thing against CM is that they decided to use CAF code on Nexus devices. I can't understand it as well as other devs working in Nexus sections. I remember CM7 on my legendary HTC G2. It was so fast and damn feature-filled as for those times. Now it's gone. Formerly, my first thought on custom ROMs was CM, now it's quite different... I am so disappointed with CM nowadays.
Just my opinion tho ?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
The hell are people knocking caf code for??? It is aosp code with fixes for specific hardware by the people who actually make the hardware, wtf would you not use it for????
As far as cm fast, bwhahahahahaha, it hasn't been fast since about cm4 back on the g1/mytouch when dwang came into the picture. Cm's goal evolved to bleeding edge features and getting on as many devices as possible while dwang was straight aosp Roms with speed and stability as the goal

If you own a nexus CyanogenMod is just as stable if not more so. Latest nightly is flawless.
I actually installed 30/6/2014 Nightly and seems faster to me in some areas, such as animation smoothness.
I was on PA 4.4 Final previously and hadn't touched CM11 for 3+ months.
Both were tested with latest Adreno drivers(June), same kernel, same kernel settings and the same Gapps; only the ROM changed.

Isn't Velocity the ROM that has ART by default? And lots of commits to ART. Still, ART is experimental in KitKat, so in the L release there will be lots of changes. I'd rather use something which doesn't have commits to something experimental(such as ART).
Also, I must note that Velocity has changed the animation to 0,75. This results as being "faster" (because of transition) but it's not. Try testing both @ 1.0 animation speed and see for yourself.

A real test would be turning animations completely off and seeing what's faster. That's where real speed and optimisation can be noticed. 1.0 is just too damn slow.

I'm stock unrooted on my n5 so far, running art and no animations. Feels blazingly fast to me. I miss custom Roms for the themes and a couple features they usually include but other than that stock has been almost 100% stable even with art.
I reboot it once every week or two and saw one soft reboot the other day in the couple months I've had it, not sure what caused it.
Still trying to decide if its worth rooting and what ROM to run. I like art which rules out stock with xposed.
I've been a chronic ROM flasher on every phone I've had until this one. It just works so good I'm afraid to mess with it. Especially when I've got warranty.

Most stable Lollipop build?

Hey everyone,
I am new back to the custom ROM game and I am wondering what is most stable right now.
I installed CMRemix yesterday but started getting "Google play services has stopped" loops and "cannot connect to camera."
I have been thinking about trading the device in for a Nexus 6, but I really enjoy the Note 4 and would just prefer to have a more stable build.
What do you guys think? I could always go back to Stock also, but that doesn't seem very fun.
This guy was 1 of the 2 developers for the s5.
I'm testing his rom out, right now.
Haven't run into any trouble.
Project Infinity:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3076657
Infinity and Alliance have both been rock solid. PacRom was great also
I have been using the SM-N910W8 port and it has worked well for me.Also I can recommend Alliance,Beanstalk and Pac-Rom also but there are so many choices for this model now. I say try them all and see which one caters more to your liking but remember to make a nandroid backup .
I've fallen absolutely head-over-heels in love with Alliance. I'd elaborate but I think pretty much every other thing I post these days is an ode to its perfection. I will however say that it's super stable and has unparalleled customization. You can theme almost every aspect of it on the fly. I've been getting above average battery life out of it too. Prior to finding Alliance iI hopped between a bunch of lollipop ROMs and Project Infinity was my favourite of the bunch back then out of the touchwiz based crowd, although if DynamicPop is anythinglike DK, aand I understand that it is, then that's most definitely going to be worth a look. Rapture /Arcadia (the one that has the most active development, I always get them mixed up) is a nice, stable no frills rom and pretty lean. As far as CM12/12.1 based ROMs Beanstalk has always been my favorite. CmRemix is great too, would give Beanstalk a serious run for its money, were it not for how wildly each release swings from super stable to a horrorshow so I found the whole process to be too stressful and full of compromise. When it's good it's great though. Unless something has drastically changed since I switched to Alliance Beanstalk is feature-packed, stable and easy on the eyes and battery.
In all honesty pretty much any of the lollipop Touchwiz based roms are pretty well put together and have one or more extremely dedicated and talented developers behind them
and you'll probably be happy with whatever you flash. AOSP ones seem to be a bit more hit-or-miss stabilitywise, but still have a lot to offer too. As someone else said, make a backup just in case and then flash away until you find the one that's right for you.
