[Q] Unable to unlock bootloader at 4.4.2, any solution? - Asus Transformer TF701

I know there are threads on this problem with other Transformer pads, but I am wondering if anyone had this problem with the TF701 (WW)?
I just get the message about "Unknown error, might be network connection..."
Of course my network connection is fine, and I am using the unlock tool found at ASUS support site for the TF701. That is version 8.
I have tried this a couple of days, many times per day, it just gives me the same error.
I have read people with other Transformer models who contacted ASUS and gave them their serial numbers and MAC-addresses, which seems to solve the problem in some cases.
Others are refering to ASUS devicetracker (devicetracker.asus.com) which seems to be taken down, or is it just available in US?
I called ASUS, they never heard of the problem.
I am thankful for any help!

I think you ended up downloading the unlock tool for the TF700, not TF701. The latter only has one tool, version 1.
The former has the v8

Thanks, but version 8 is the right one. It's just called v 1.0 on ASUS TF701 support site.

Ok, in that case just keep trying. For some people it literally took 40 -50 tries and it worked all the sudden.
At the same time register your tablet on Asus VIP service, then conatct them and explain your problem.
The mismatched database entries was a big problem for many TF700 owners - haven't heard anything like that for the TF701 ever.
Send them a screenshot of your About Tablet page with each mail and ask them to check their database and correct the entry for your tablet.
Good luck

Thanks, I will do as you suggest and contact them via the support form instead of calling.
And I will continue hitting that button.

I just wanted to put in my two cents here. I've been having the same issues with the bootloader unlock tool for the last 3 months. I've called customer support numerous times and been told too bad. We don't support that. We don't care. I bought this tablet for its vast power but I am not even allowed to experience its full potential. I am deeply disappointed in Asus. It has been nothing but problems with this thing but through patience some have resolved themselves.
You're suggestion may have been the light at the end of my tunnel. I have never hears of the VIP support until now. I have done the same, registered and sent them a ticket request. I uploaded a screenshot of the screen saying password incorrect.
Here's hoping this can finally be resolved. If this fixes it, I'll be sure to tell everyone that's still having problems with the tool.

Yes, officially Asus does not provide any support as soon as yu mention "unlock". That's why people were telling them thry could not get registered for Asus Device Tracker (same problem: no s# in Asus database = no device tracker).
The VIP service people seem to be a little more receptive than general support. But it really depends on who happens to read your mail...
That's why you want to be persistent. Turn yorself into a polite and friendly PITA and don't forget to attach a screenshot to each mail you send.

Do you get "password incorrect"?
I think you have to turn off two factor login on your Google account. You may also have to log in to your Google account website and turn on "allow unsecured apps".

Does Device Tracker exist anymore?

I am not talking about the "Unknown sources" in Android.
I don't know the exact description since English is not my first language, but if you log in to for an example Gmail, then go to your Google account up to the right, you will find an option for allowing "unsecure apps".
I hope it was understandable.

I think I found what you're referring to. It's in the Google account management section. It's the area where you can make your internet experience immune to Google's pull. You can edit adsense settings, see your entire Google history, YouTube videos you've viewed all sorts of stuff. It's really cool, but unfortunately the boot loader unlock tool doesn't come up in that list of apps. That list consists of third party apps that have all already gained access.
If you're referring to yet a different screen, maybe a screenshot would be helpful?

If you are not using two-factor authentication this link should work:
https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps
And some info:

But at least it seems you have access to ASUS servers when you got the "incorrect password" message.

Yeah, this looks like the classic database mismatch problem. Keep trying to use the app and contact Asus.
It really depends on who you happen to talk/email to. So don't give up. Just read about someone who bought an unlocked TF701 on ebay which was totally messed up and he/she got an RMA approved without any problem...
Ask for a supervisor, escalate it... If you're willing to give up your warranty - why should they care?

So I walked away from it. Came back and for sh**s and giggles I hit the button and BOOM the lock on my bootloader was blown wide the freak open.

Force OTA if not comfortable with sideload...

Settings, Apps, All, Google Service Framework.
Force Stop, Clear Data.
Then check for update in About Phone.
Then repeat these steps, and the update shows up on the second check. Repeated this on 3 phones to get 4.4.2 where 4.4.1 hadn't even popped up previously.
---
Note, this procedure is to be followed at your own risk. I have completed this successfully on 3 x Nexus 5 from v4.4, however I can not test all scenarios or be responsible for any subsequent issues, whether related to this method or not. If you cant accept this, then wait for the OTA.

No. We already had a long thread about this. Please have a mod close this.
And not to sound rude - but if you're uncomfortable with sideload, you probably shouldn't have a Nexus.
I don't believe the Dan M statement is wholly accurate, given I've thoroughly checked the issues he says might arise.
I suspect it's more a case of him protecting Googles roll out schedule planning with a plausible explanation.
Not sure why someone not comfortable with sideloads shouldn't have a Nexus... it's just a regular consumer phone like any other.

1. If someone who writes the code for Google tells you not to do something and gives you a list of reasons, I would suggest listening. As pointed out in the thread it can cause problems and it isn't always something you notice.
2. Because there is no danger in sideloading. It will either work or refuse to flash.
3. It's a Nexus. It's meant for that kind of thing. It's EXTREMELY easy.
4. If they aren't comfortable with sideloading, they probably wouldn't know whether or not their device had an issue after the update. They could miss out on certain features, apps not functioning properly, etc. You are essentially telling someone computer illiterate that they should do something that could potentially mess something up on their device instead of doing something that is fool-proof. That's irresponsible. Not to mention - they wouldn't even know how to fix it if it did damage anything

What do you mean you've thoroughly checked? You've isolated and tested the behavior of every single app that uses GCM after a framework data clear?
I mean, you are essentially accusing an Android engineer of taking to reddit to lie.. but why? Considering they have provided an officially supported method of sideloading OTA updates the idea they are "protecting roll out schedule planning" is total nonsense.
There are only 2 possible scenarios here
1) Dan Morrill is being 100% truthful
2) Instead of simply disabling the "Clear Data" button in Framework which would be dead simple, Google has chosen to send engineers to social media to spread lies and misinformation
I upgraded from 4.4 to 4.4.2 with 0 problems , if Google says don't sideload what u gonna do no side load?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
seriously sideload is about the easiest way to do it other than being able to download it direct to the phone and parse the sdcard like the way phones used to work... i know windows machines and that whole "driver" thing you guys need to deal with can get annoying but it's really not difficult. if you are afriad of command prompts then wait the 2 weeks or so that it takes to get it rolled out.
People spend a good amount of time on making instructional threads, gathering information all in one place, doing everything in their power to make it easy for even a complete beginner to do stuff with their phones, and we still have people wanting them to do it the harder way.
And then they defend their thinking with some ridicilous conspiracy theory that completely contradicts the very nature of how Google DEMONSTRATES that they are 100% behind people sideloading (ie: taking the all of 30 seconds it takes to do) an upate onto their phone) by implying that they have a vested interest in slowing down the number of activations?
Seriously now.
You people crack me up. Before this person from google said do not do this we ALL did it multiple time on multiple devices at least I did. No core meltdowns... yet.
remember these are the same people who thought the Nexus 5 camera was good to go as is...

It's not worth your time trying to explain this. There are those who will always believe they are right. They will continue to ignore knowledge provided by those who are experts on the matter and believe they are right.
The most common excuse I read is "I've been doing it for so long without any issues". The technical explanation clearly states that the issues that happen are more often than not invisible to the user. Then they'll take to XDA to create a bunch of threads about "OMGZZZZ MY PHONE IS BROKEZORZ, GOOGLE IS TURNING INTO APPLE...RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE" and not even think that the issues might be related to breaking GCM in an app or similar.
Who cares if it can be bad. It can often be easier than sideloading, especially if you don't have a computer near by. I did it while waiting for my plane the other day and it was nice to have the camera improvements before I got to my destination. Just plan to do a factory reset after you get the update if it bothers you.
Not to mention, I am fairly sure whenever you install Google Apps after installing a dirty flashing an updated ROM it does the same thing as clearing data on the framework. I have certain apps I always have to reinstall or they stop getting push updates after doing that.

I don't want to progress yet another thread about this within two days, but I completely agree with your last point. I bet half of the people that do this will post on here in about a week saying their apps aren't syncing/working and "nexus 5 sucks" etc etc. I've already responded to someone who was asking about his gmail not syncing properly on 4.4.2. I asked him if he cleared the framework to get the update. Would be a great example if that's why he's having the problem.

Alright, the real question here is after someone has cleared the framework, is there a way to recover or go back without restoring a backup or reflashing an OTA from scratch? Or does it just take time for Google to catch up? And DO they eventually catch up to the device? Or is it inevitably doomed once you clear. We can argue about why or why not, but lets figure out how.
Love how people jump on this guy or the one from yesterday who posted it. Been doing this on my past 4 devices. If something clears, wouldn't it be like hard resetting your device. All the information will get populated back. I also believe the engineer said there is a possibility something can go wrong. There is always the possibility something can go wrong with anything!
You can screw up your phone just taking an OOTO. People just need to let it go. We also do not know what his true intentions were for saying that.
If you do not want to clear data, then don't but don't tell others not to do it unless anyone here has experienced a problem first hand in doing so.

It is not a question of 'if'. If you clear the services framework, Gmail notifications are 100% guaranteed to stop working for a time (could be 10 minutes, could be several days). Thankfully, Gmail is one of the few apps that will eventually realize the GCM id has changed and is able to deal with it. That is not the case for other apps.
The problem is people here don't see their phone or apps crashing and think everything is fine. But a week later they realize stuff isn't syncing or notifications aren't coming in and they blame it on the software update.
Again?? REALLY!! Google say no, like it or not they are the experts...

His true intentions were to stop people from potentially messing up their phones and then ignorantly going online or on an apps review page and spouting off about how broken the app or phone is. To think differently makes no sense.

[Q] HTC "Test Device" - should I be worried?

Hi there. I have sent my HTC One back for repair after my camera started talking purple pictures. It just came back today, reset to default settings. But when I turned it on, it gave me a following text in red on the "HTC Tell" page:
" Notwithstanding the above statement, this is a Test Device. Tell HTC is automatically enabled and cannot be disabled. By participating in the trial, you understand and agree that HTC will collect information from and about you and your device, including personally identifiable information, such as your name, phone number, precise location, email address, device id and imei""
I have contacted HTC about this using their chat service, and they said nothing they done could have caused this, so it must have been a test device before - but I bought it from a local carrier on contract, so how?
The bootloader status is "locked, S-OFF". It might be S-OFF because I flashed it with official 4.3 before it became officially available here in the UK, but I honestly don't remember changing this setting.
Should I worry about this notice? Is my phone really sending all my personal details to HTC? Is there anything I can do about it?

It's due to being S-Off. The device itself is not a "test device" just the S-Off triggers that on stock ROMs.
As to being worried, it's only Error reporting (ie when the phone or app crashes)... i personally couldn't care less.
Then again someone said, "how am i supposed to know they only collect info on crashes, i don't trust them", that's his choice of course, but if they wanted to collect information, they wouldn't need to tell you about it in the first place.
And who collects (and shares) more information, Google, your provider, or HTC and not mentioning the three letter agencies
Unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and ROM, you can get rid of the Tell HTC app and use it normally, if you're worried
If your phone is s off don't worry about it. You can do much more with it now

[Q] Storage comes up as Samsung MAG2GC am I hacked?

I have been having trouble for a long time with unusual stuff happening on my old Xperia Z2, my Acer laptop, other devices on my network, and now my new Z3 compact also and have a strong feeling my ex-partner is behind it. I went to four computer repair places, brought a new router and contacted a computer forensics company who said it would cost $3000 upwards to get to the bottom of before I pretty much lost hope of regaining my privacy. When I got my new Z3 I created new accounts (Gmail etc) with the exception of Facebook and I changed the email and password for that. When I factory reset my devices they don't seem to go back to the factory settings, this was especially evident on my laptop after having windows reinstalled the first time at a computer repair place and the second time myself from usb it still had the same desktop picture id downloaded as soon as I opened it. Factory reset my z3 earlier this evening and had been looking up USSD codes in the hope that that might succeed in properly resetting in (which it didn't) and came across this Vellamo app that assesses your device and gives you the stats and it came up saying my storage is Samsung, could this be at the bottom of it all? Help
Thought it might be helpful if I upload these too.
You might find that Sony uses Samsung storage chips in their devices.. I think most mobile manufacturers do..
I wouldn't find that too surprising to be honest and I doubt that it means you have been "hacked" as well..
Edit: Mine says the same, Samsung memory chip

Hate to revive old threads, but I have something you might be interested in; my storage isn't the same as yours. Here are the differences:
Manufacturer: Toshiba

I do wonder if there are any performance differences between the two.
Also a question; is the storage used eMMC 5.0 or is it still a 4.xx model?

Not giving choice of "Just Once" and "Always"

As the title said, the phone doesn't give me the choice of always or just once, there's only a menu and I can click the app that automatically becomes the "default" app... It sucks as I need to save a pdf from Outlook to One Drive to then open it in write pdf but it won't since one drive is the default app and I don't get the choice...
How do I fix that??

I don't think you can "fix" it but you can undo the default by going to settings then applications then going into default applications and clearing that apps default.
I hate this "feature" depending on what I am doing I always want to use different apps to open files. Come on Samsung (or Google) fix this. I think it is Samsung as I had a G4 and had the option on my G4

I got the 5.1.1 s6 edge update just this morning and it didnt give me a choice, just chose a permanent option just like on note 5 that i got this afternoon. You can always reset defaults, but once you open a link in an app with a specific app, dont you want to keep that choice for the future? I don't mind the change
This is frustrating! I'm going to check out that app. I'm commenting to be a part of this thread for future fixes.
The problem in note 5 . I have note 4 with lollipop 5.1.1 and has no problem
I hate the disappearance of (just once and always) option that i used frequently, hope to fix it in next update
You can go into default apps and clear it. Then choose your app when you open that file. Or, use ES File Explorer to open as. There's no problem with the phone. There cut out unnecessary crap, which I think is better. That screen would always come up and piss people off. Haha.

Yeah, this annoyed me too. Certain things you want options for. Like wallpapers, ringtones, ECT. Someone in another thread mentioned "better open with" app. Works well

Samsung it's so wrong!

There's no fix for this, at least for now, I talked with Samsung Customer support they did like that to "please their customers" (I don't understand); it's not a lollipop issue, other models like core prime and others with 5.1.1 still ask always or just once, it's really frustrating, but even more frustrating is to find people out there that is happy with this change, ''unnecessary crap'' they call it, since they do not know how to use their phones looks like they want everybody else to suffer, it's so simple if you do not like it! just click ALWAYS and leave the rest of the people that use their phones for more than just calls, chat and listen to music to keep using our amazing JUST ONCE and let us be happy!!!!, what else we will have to take from Samsung?
NO SD CARD SWAP
NO WATER PROOF
NO BATTERY SWAP
COPYCAT DESIGN
EAR PHONES PLUG AT THE BOTTOM
AND NOW THEY TOOK OUR OPTION TO CHOOSE!!!!
this company it's going backwards or what?
this happened on my note 4 as well with 5.1.1.
the change was completely unnecessary, as people could just click "always" if they wanted. why remove the option?
but for those of us who open diff links in diff apps depending on the context. we are screwed?
has anyone found a fix?
Don't be selfish

Don't call unnecessary crap to such a smart option just because you only use your cellphone just for chat and Facebook navigation, it's very simple, it's just two options and by simply clicking ALWAYS!!! you can be happy! and leave the rest of us, those who really use our cellphones as smart devices enjoy our freedom to CHOSE!!! and let us be happy with our choice that we miss so much ''JUST ONCE''.

If you hate the phone so much, why did you buy it? Relax man, it is what it is. You yelling here isn't going to change anything.
Exactly... Sell it on swappa and move on if you hate it so much...

You shouldn't give useless advises, I would if I could, first I have to wait up to 6 months for another swap and second I can't sell it for the price that I paid for the phone which it's dropping very quickly.
Luckily it's not all over and this app will fill the emptiness in the heart of those who miss the liberty of CHOOSING, the app "Better Open With" will make your life easier, it worked for me and don't ask for any information.

Thanks for this app. Just noticed this same issue on my S7 and sometimes I use different browsers for search. So having to go in and clear out the default each time wouldnt have been cool. I like how the app has a countdown and pause as well. Great suggestion.

Having Issue With Stock Contacts App!

For some reason, when I try to edit my contacts in the stock Contacts app, I get that stupid "Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped" message. Does anyone know why this is happening, and perhaps how to fix it? I tried deleting the data & cache and force stopping it, but nothing works. I did end up getting a more stable contacts app called Contacts +, but I'd still like to get this resolved anyway.
Thanks.
I can edit contacts within stock app. Not sure why its force closing on you.

I C. That's cool.
I may just use Xperia Companion to reinstall the software then.
But will using Xperia Companion to "repair" the phone's software mean it installs the INTERNATIONAL firmware, or the US? lol If I get the US firmware then I'd have to get the software to reinstall the fingerprint software too b/c we both know Sony Mobile idiotically decided not to give the US version that.
It will install whatever you currently have on the device.

Ok thanks Augie!
I went ahead and used XC to do all that to resolve a few issues. Hoping it will do so.
I'm having the same issues, no way to reinstall the app either I've cleared the data but nothing. Maybe it's a region of use thing? Maybe the way contact files save in the US?

Yeah....... it could be any of those. It was suggested to me to just wait and Sony may very likely send an update to fix it. I'm using Contacts + for now and it's been working just fine.
I have the same issue on the contacts app. I have both the X and XP but somehow X works perfectly but not the XP. I even did a repair with XC and it still doesn't work.

gclancer,
Ok so it's not just me. lol I also did a repair with XC and yeah still not letting me edit contacts. I'm not sure what to do but for now I'm just gonna use Contacts + until it's fixed. If you figure out a way to fix it, please let us know.
I also notice Google Messenger, which always worked before on my Z3 and S7, doesn't work so well for MMS messages on the XP. In group texts, the recipients I send to would get my group response AND the same response would be sent to each one individually. But I went back to using Textra which is also great and now at least that issue's been resolved.

Tks Rockstar. I am actually using simpler dialer and contact app for now. I just find it stupid that my X works perfectly and the more expensive XP doesnt. Hopefully an update will fix it.

YW gclancer!
Yeah that is some BS. One guy on here who bought the int'l XP from the same retailer as I did said he doesn't have that problem anymore after using XC (he did initially though), but we still do. Don't get it, but yeah.........hopefully an update is sent out SOON by Sony to resolve this matter.

So I loaded both the X and XP with the same apps and it turns out the speed difference are pretty minimal despite having different processors. I am seriously considering selling the XP and just keep the X. But yeah hopefully an update will be out soon to fix your problem. I am using the X now and maybe its a keeper for me lol

My contacts app is working fine on the xp. Granted I started the phone through initial set up as a new phone. Not restoring any back ups during the initial process. I went to the contacts app and it was working correctly then I imported from Google account after the fact.

gclancer,
Yeah but for me, it's not just about the speed. I love having the IP65/68 rating as I sometimes have to take calls while in the shower (I leave phone near bathroom door, not in shower lol). I'll step out and take them with wet hands and face......so for me, the XP is a must since the X doesn't have that feature. Being slightly faster is not a big deal, you're right there........but I'd still prefer it.

MGS,
Yeah the 2nd time around (maybe 1st too?), which was when I used XC, I made sure to choose the option to set up as a new phone too. I didn't really have any backups to restore anyway, so this was the only option. Yet when I went to the Contacts app it still wouldn't let me edit random contacts, though everything else worked fine with it. So not sure but since everything else is fine with phone, I'm just gonna let it go since I now use Contacts + anyway and it's much more stable.
I have been having the same issues. I have tried factory resetting it different ways. The sony bridge repair tool does not even list the Xperia X Performance on its list of phones yet. So, that's a bummer. There's this site that gives you 4 ways to do a hard reset. However, on the 4th method where you are asked to download Sony's flash tool, the X Performance isn't even listed on the supported devices.
I do wish that Sony sends a fix immediately.
mac,
I returned the phone (which had other issues too) to my Amazon seller (NGP) and the replacement they sent me this morning came ALREADY set up. Normally I would be mad about that, but the Contacts app WORKED! Didn't close out when I tried to edit it. I wanted to make sure it was fixed though, so I did a factory reset, and ughh........ it's not working now again. I e-mailed NGP and asked them to tell me what they did. I hope they can tell me so I can do it too and fix this. I will keep this thread posted.
You're right, it's very annoying! MGS told me he factory resetted but didn't use backup during setup or even log in with Google account, and it worked for him. But when I tried that........nope! Even tried creating a new account, and nope! Very weird, but again I hope NGP can tell me what they did.
Mine seem to work alright, I can edit the phone number and or contact details.

Consider yourself very lucky my friend. lol A lot of ppl on here and other boards have said they're having this issue. Just don't factory reset like I did I guess. lol

I did factor reset, in the store, I just briefly set the phone to test it for dead pixels and other functions, after that I reseted it to do fully setup with my own data.
