Samsung - please revisit your default lcd_density in future phones - Galaxy Note 4 General

I've come to expect the default lcd_density of the Note line to be set far too high based on the resolution of the screen. I had assumed it was b/c of Google's design constraints that all phones of certain resolutions must have the same density to allow apps and such to render identically, though the physical size of objects would be smaller or larger depending of the size of the screen.
This was why the 1080p S4, S5, and Note 3 all running a lcd_density of 480 would show the same amount of content on the screen. Everything would just be larger on the Note 3 as it was a 5.7" screen. The Note 4 with a 1440p screen and lcd_density of 640 ends up basically having the same amount of content on screen as those phones as well (same as the LG G3). So rooting and changing this in build.prop has become a standard task for many of us.
However the Nexus 6 has a non-traditional lcd_density of 560 while having a 6" 1440p screen. Google obviously realized that using 640 would result in even more cartoonishly large icons and such on a 6" screen. However they went outside their own standardized guidelines in doing so, which should empower OEMs to do the same.
1. 560 is a good compromise IMO for most users on a 1440p screen that is 5.5" or larger. Personally I prefer 480 on the Note 4, but I understand that might make objects too small for many users. 560 on the Note 4 I think is the right stock lcd_density to balance out amount of content on the screen and size of the content.
2. The Note 3 should probably be 420 stock (vs 480), though the S4/S5 are probably fine at 480 due to their smaller screens.
Samsung - as the phablet leader, please balance out screen resolution and lcd_density on your larger screens to provide the best user experience. Before the Nexus 6, only Apple took special care in doing so when moving to larger phones. The 6+ is a good example where they didn't just make everything bigger, but also allowed more content to be viewed on the screen.

are you sure nexus 6 coming with 560 dpi

How low can we go without samsungs apps looking bad? Havent root yet but as soon as i do that was the firts thing i was planing on doing
Sent from my Galaxy NOTE 4

That was one of the first things I changed when I rooted mine, 480 is a real decent setting to use.

Yep - besides folks in the Nexus 6 xda forum changing their dpi confirming this, you can also see it here:

Google did the smart thing for the Nexus 6. Now hopefully Samsung will start doing so.

Most people who change their dpi use App Settings xposed mod to set the Samsung stock apps to 640. However this is b/c Samsung seems to hard code their designs. When I changed the lcd_density on the OnePlus One, all the stock apps just adjusted seamlessly, the same way Chrome or other apps do. Dialer, camera, etc all adjusted dynamically.

wow.. google released nexus 6 with 560 dpi !!! wth.. atleast all their apps are multi dpi capable.
Samsung stock apps like dialer, camera, launcher and a few go crazy mostly because samsung dont have similar code across all their devices, hope that changes with lollipop release. From what i have noted on all the lollipop videos released so far the UI is far more consistent across s4, n3 ,s5 and note 4., this might open up proper scaling of stock apps for note 4 users @ 480 DPI

Yes, same complaint ! It is unthinkable to have the same working area as S4 , then why did we get a larger phone? To have a zoomed interface because Samsung realised that we don't have good eyes:silly: Now in all seriousness, why most and greatest Rom developers (8 out of 10) don't build a Multi-DPI Rom? Is it because of compatibility-performance issues? The interest on MULTI-DPI should have been exactly the opposite, it makes me think that most people get a Note phone only for Multimedia purposes.

Can only agree, using the Note 4 with its blown up interface feels like a toy after using the iPhone 6 plus with optimised apps and interface that uses the big screen better. And then they say that the plus is just a big iPhone. But it uses its big screen much better than my note in most of cases. Perhaps somewhere the notes big screen is used better but I can't remember seeing it using my note

[Q] LCD Density at 250 looks unsharp and cartoonish. Is it the same on Samsung Tab???

Editing the build.prop file to change the LCD Density from 163 to 250, to match the Samsung Galaxy Tab, makes the Nook color icons and graphics seem very cartoonish and blurry.
I'm wondering, do the images on the Samsung Galaxy Tab look blurry and unsharp also at it's default of 250 LCDD? If not, does it use a different set of images at a different resolution or something?
Is there any way of improving the appearance of icons and graphics on the Nook Color at LCD Density of 250 so it doesn't look so blurred and un-sharp???
Does anyone have a suggested LCD Density that gets as close to 250 without things looking un-sharp and dull?
Thanks
I don’t like anything above 190.
Doesn't the galaxy tab use 240?
The graphics that don't look very good are raster so they wont scale to a larger size without looking worse. Don't know of anything that you can do.
Galaxy Tab can use whatever Samsung wants for their default hike of their "native", aka physical pixel density which is somewhere between 168 and 170 dpi. Their approach might include enhanced (for 240 dpi) rendering of icons and probably enhanced rendering of fonts. Both are dependent on how good the device's Open GL ES 2.0 works, especially how much hardware assitance in rendering is involved.
Our hardware might be not involved at all, especially being pre-A2.2 (or I'd rather say, pre-Android 2.3).
As NookColor stands today (even with Nookie Froyo), I can't recommend doing any DPI hikes (like to 180, or to 200, or even to 240 dpi) as unsupported at the present level of Open GL implementation. Some tweaks around 168...170 may prove more productive in gaining better readability though, see it in my blog fineoils.blogspot.com: a recent post, and throughout.
I hiked mine to 170 and didn't like the loss of sharpness. I don't know how people tolerate anything over 180.
I'm at 204... works well

Also using 204, and it looks great. To each their own, I guess . . .

180 looks great to me. higher than that starts cutting off ui elements here and there. higher than 200, though, starts looking a bit wonky and the status bar turns into a cluttered mess.
180 here.. perfect and tack sharp for me
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using Tapatalk
I played around with my density levels after reading a post from a prominent participant here in the Nook section of XDA.
When the idea of the adjusting pixel definition first came we were all lowering our densities for sharper screens on our phones.
To raise it on the Nook to come close to the Galaxy Tab seemed counter intuitive and the amount of apps made for tabs size at the time was poor at best and still is. Yet so much is determined by software and hardware. So after fiddling with my density I settled with stock 160. I need that sharpness. My Samsung Vibrant's screen is so good. Picking up my phone after my tab was disapointing.
As a photographer I stare and gauge sharpness all day long, so I am probably guilty of over thinking it.
As stated previously, software limitations currently apply so maybe in the future going up in desity will yield great results. I think we have only begun to what this screen can do.
Given all that I surmise its a matter of taste and one more tool in our tool box as things evolve, and they are evolving fast and fun.

320Dpi to 240Dpi

so my note has 320dpi native, what happens when i change it to 240dpi?
are there any advantages?Disadvantages?
This is being discussed on a separate thread, bit I think it is a good idea for a thread of its own.
I tried it, and the screen is much larger. That means most things in the screen are much smaller. It appears to make most launchers smoother as well.
I find it too small for my tired old eyes, but if your sight is good, I think it is a marvellous idea. It basically becomes a miniature tablet, and most apps seem to take advantage of that.
The stock phone dialer seems to be one of the very few TW apps that does not resize. TW also does not allow more cols and rows (IIRC), so it would be best to use another launcher, and perhaps Go Dialer.
---------- Post added at 05:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:16 AM ----------
Actually the thread is here, so this is a duplicate:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487309
you see more stuff in most apps for example in settings you see more options at once. most launchers do ok as long as you adjust rows columns although sometimes widgets look weird
i run darkyrom at 240dpi only. nothing is to small for me to read and everything but s-memo seems to work perfectly *you get some weird lines, just color over it with a white and go on with drawing .
i run adw ex launcher with 10x10 homescreen layout and 7 icon dockbar.
It´s so EASY!
It´s easy: Everbody who is interested in this, should definitly give it a shot. Get DPI Changer from the market for free and try it out yourself. There es nothing (again: nothing!) that will happen to your phone, you are always able to go back to 320 again without ANY issues.
The only one thing everbody has to do before is to install another launcher (I can fully recommend Go Launcher (ex), IMAO it´s the smoothest for our Gnote) just for that one reason: Damned TouchWiz doesn´t scale correctly.
Try it out folks, deside for yourself, it´s worth it!
just modify the build.prop density to 240. The default 320 is too big and it pains the eye after many usages!
there are a couple ways of doing it
the 2 above and also an app called "Rom Toolbox" which i recommend more then the others because it also gives you alot more options for different things other then DPI aswell.
Can someone upload 2 screenshots with both resolution please?

The biggest advantage is that you can see more in the screen. Especially useful with context menu, browser, various apps and so on.
First 240 Dpi images
Images for 320
Thanks drgopoos... 240 looks more like a phone, and 320 looks more like a mini tablet... One question, does dpi is the same as ppi?
I see my iPhone 4svis 330 ppi the Gnex is 320ppi and the note is 236... does that mean the resolution is lower?

i thought that 240 dpi is kinda crap but now changed from 320 to 240dpi and im enjoying it, looks so cool and more comfortable ;D

It means that the screen has less physical pixels per inch, so it can be same resolution as a smaller screen that has bigger ppi.
Which means that even tho u have less ppi on the gnote, you still have more resolution than the other phones cause of the size of the gnote's screen.
Ppl say dpi for screens but the correct term is indeed ppi. dpi is for printers.
Does the CriskeloRom can also change to DPI or not ? need depend on the launcher or not ?

Samsung galaxy nexus or Samsung galaxy s2

I know this is the samsung galaxy s2 section. But if you were offered a samsung galaxy nexus for your samsung galaxy s2 would you make the switch?
If no please explain
If yes please explain
Thanks
You will get bigger display and better updates. Depends on how long you got your s2, if you feel bored its not bad switch. Personally i would switch it.

Personally, i like the design and i feel 32GB is enough memory. For the camera, you are right. Its just up to you, do you take pictures and videos often or no? You know the best for you here.
Obviously nexus have style, bigger display and higher pixel density, it's the google way.
But if you take in to consideration that:
- the usable screen it's almost the same becouse of the navigation bar in nexus case
- SGS2 has the better screen even at such lower res becouse Nexus use PenTile Matrix technology which it's a major downgrade (some colors have to be approximated by using adjacent pixels, and can cause colors that don’t read as true)
- you get 5MP insted of 8MP and you also pay more
- in SGS2 case you will get more fps in games and in User Interface becouse nexus gpu will have to process more information (720 x 1280 vs 480 x 800 in same amount of time; bouth gpu are similar at the same resolution), you must conclude that nexus looks nice and I9100 performe better.
For me performance, user experiece and image quality it's everything so I would take i9100.

Very good statement, i have to agree with alot of that. however, you forgot to mention Samsung nexus NFC chip, panoramic camera, face unlock and android beam. They are new features that makes me love my galaxy nexus, not to mention if your into a curve design, its pretty sleek.
for me it was really tough, i went with the nexus although, i wish had a better camera, but 5 mega pixel on nexus is surprisingly not that bad, of course the galaxy s2 camera is better.

color calibration?

I saw someone who did a really indepth color calibration for his Nexus 6, i cannot find the thread anywhere...help?
(note: I am color blind, so calibrating the colors to be perfect for normal eyes helps me out more than you can ever imagine)
(note 2: no, the color blind options do not help me out, my eyes are abnormally color blind, and i am used to not compensating for it, so the compensation screws me up worse)

Is it possible to get the screen to look like the Note 4s? (Note 4 is "Cooler" as opposed to the "warmer" N6.)
Here is a youtube video showing the comparisons of both displays. Really good comparison IMHO. Google Nexus 6 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4
I do prefer the Note 4s. This is almost a deal breaker for me to get the N6 over the Note 4.
But I really want to like the N6... Dual speakers,6inches,stock android, small bezels...

Does it look exactly like the Note 4 from your experience? Like have you seen it in store and compared it? I think the brightness is lower on the N6 though...
No I haven't done a direct comparison with the Note 4. I don't have or want that phone so I have no need to compare them.
Do you mind taking some pics/vids before and after from default to cooler?
I wrote a wall of text after but I'm on my phone and somehow it got lost :/
Anyways basically I wanted to say that it might help more people who are on the fence about this display and it may shed some light on the positives of the screen vs the other flagship competitor the Note 4.
Ive searched all over the web and I've yet to see anything comparing the different settings.

I have both. Note 4 all the way, looks nicer than nexus 6 and more premium. The screen is way brighter than nexus 6 and no one can deny that and sharper. If the time goes back 1 month would never by a nexus 6. Also don't get me wrong nexus is a good device overall you just need some sort of work around to get it how you want it. Note 4 is good out of the box.

But if you tweak it, doesn't it look much better and is it slightly on par with the Note 4? I know the brightness is low on the N6 but as long as it's a little brighter than my Note 2 I'm OK with that. And they both have the same resolution, is that why the Note 4 is sharper because of its smaller display?
I really like everything about the Nexus 6 but the Note 4s display blew me away.
Is the only way to change the color settings via a custom kernel? I'm happy with stock kernel, but would live to tweak my colors a bit. Thanks

Thanks for the answer.
I hope this is not heresy, but after playing with a few different kernels on my N5, for me it just became a)an obsession and b)a hassle. However, I did like the tools to do the display color changes. I will wait for the CM official rom or maybe play with one of the kernels available. It would be nice to have the stock kernel with only the color capabilities, but I suppose if you mod a kernel, you might as well put in additional features. And yeah I know its easy enough to flash a custom kernel and go back to stock, just my laziness.

SM-T815 Screen resolution , text size - how the game on 2048×1536 px

Hi,
9.7 inches Ipad compare S2
Ipad -- 2,048 × 1,536 px
Tabs S2 - 2048×1536 px
I have played game: leps world 3 and other
The same games I have loaded to Ipad air and they look smaller ? I mean the leps world 3 the movement buttons was smaller and the all screen experience was better Where on Tab S2 it is feel like the game was 20-30 percent zoom in and the touch buttons was to big which make game experience not good. I do fell that developer needs time to optimise games for 2048×1536 px resolution
Do you see the same issue with other apps ???
For me some text as well not scaled perfect to the screen - Looks little to big sometimes This is not bad thing for bad eyes But if I compare Ipad and S2 the Ipad text most time was 30% smaller that S2
It is feel at the moment that I have product – happy with hardware but software not perfect and how many month wait before everything will be fixed ?

If you root the tab you can apply another DPI setting (via, for example, the app "Root dpi changer"). The preset 320 dpi are indeed unnecessarily high. 270 dpi is much better.
Ya certain games will like zoom, so far only one of my games like this. The rest all work fine.
Fonts I use Extra small, everything looks small enough to me and just nice.
By the way mine is 8" edition.
