[Q] Future of Nexus 5 after Nexus 6 - Nexus 5 General

I tried the nexus 6 and I am not the phablet guy. I prefer a mobile(music player, camera, torch, calling & messaging device) and tablet(reading & youtube).
I was told by a salesman that Google plans to release the Nexus 5 2014 or 2015 version with better CPU & RAM. Is it true??? I googled to find some confirmation about that from google but nothing from anyone.
I am planning to buy a mobile and was trying to choose between MotoX & N5. If a new version of N5 is coming, I would prefer that. I like the Pure Android version over that of HTC or Samsung.

Nexus 5 2014 or 2015 may happen or may not, now it's all assumptions. I haven't even heard a rumor about it. Since they have refreshed the Nexus 7 with 2013 edition, it might happen in the case of Nexus 5. Moto X 2014 edition is good phone than Nexus 5. This doesn't mean nexus 5 is totally bad. Moto X 2014 is slightly better.

As it stands now the Nexus 5 still a very very good phone, the current 801's such as the S5, M8 ect aren't all that much ahead in terms of specs they have the same GPU same amount of memory in most, only real noticeable difference being it clocked slightly higher.
And i very much doubt we see the 805, as this will take sales away from the Nexus 6.
If there is to be a refresh it probably only happen around November 2015, when we could see the latest Snapdragon be it 811, 815 or 820 in a 5 or 5.2" device with 4GB of ram and a QHD screen, which would be a proper upgrade to the Nexus 5.
As I've mentioned before the Moto X 2014 is only a side step to the Nexus 5 & tbh your just wasting money if you change to that.

To be honest I wouldn't wish a better CPU or more RAM on refreshed Nexus 5 but a better battery and camera maybe

@dudaka: Battery, ofcourse. Dual-sim, maybe a nice topping. Memory card, I desperately need it.
Thank alot to everyone for your feedback. I just wanted to know how much truth was there to the rumour.

I think the rumor is true. Google is still advertising the Nexus 5 on the Play Store, I expect to see a 2015 Nexus 5 at some point when new SOCs become available.
As of now, the 800 is still rocking. The real benefit of the 805 is the beefier GPU required for 1440p screens. If you don't play games, the 805 is hardly an improvement for a 1080p device.
Also, I hope google stays at 1080p and focuses on power efficiency, color accuracy and outdoor readability rather than pulling a LG G3.

What do you guys think about the Moto X?

The customization options look really great... I'm contemplating on making a switch when it's released. Really looking forward to August 1 so I can make a more concrete decision however.

Only by 100 mAh.
Stick with the N4, wait for the N5 if u really want a new phone. MX is last years' specs :/
We'll see when it is officially released. ut if it is the same price range as the Nexus 4 ($250 - $350), I'll probably buy it. Since realizing I love these phones so much more caseless, I'll be glad to have one that isn't so fragile.

The Moto X has LTE, a better camera, and supposedly better battery life. Who cares about specs. In almost every category it is as good or better than the N4 (and for the same price). I don't think it is a tough choice if you are looking for a new phone.
The Moto X has been optimised better. It actually feels faster than the Nexus 4 when using it and scores higher in benchmarks. Might get it just because of how cheap it will be, and then upgreade to the Nexus 5 in a few months.

Nexus 4 has LTE as well (unofficially). Better battery life? Its only 100 mAh. If its software wise then thats just optimization on software side not hardware side.
Battery for me on the N4 is fine. I last through the whole day with 30% battery life. Specs matter, why pay money for a device that is outdated when you can get a beast phone like a S4 that is a quad core in the same price range OR the G2 which is really good with a Snapdragon 800, ~2500mAh, STEREO speakers, 1080p display.
G2 will dethrone Moto X easily. And with N5 rumors being it based off the G2, the N5 will be even better than the Moto X without question.
Not to mention, N4 has 4.3, Moto X will be launching with 4.2.2 and will still need carrier approval for a OTA to be pushed out where Google can push it out without the carriers saying so the N4 will ALWAYS have the latest update and open binary files.
Motorola's bootloader policy? Not sure... but on the DROID lineups, they're all locked. Nexus is without a doubt a hands down the best experience when it comes to using custom roms, kernels, etc. Its better to stay with a Nexus device. Once a Nexus, always a Nexus is the motto to live by.
I'm most excited about the fact that it's being manufactured stateside. That's about it - my N4 is satisfactory for the time being.
However, if the MotoX succeeds, and its successors continue to be made in North America, then I'll get whatever the latest MotoX is when it's time to replace my N4.
This assumes that Motorola makes the device open and supports it properly though. If it's as locked down as their razrs and droids, I'm not interested.

LTE only works on band 4 not 99% of the carriers around the world and it requires you to use an old radio that is no longer supported. I'm sorry but that is not LTE support.
As for battery life, who cares why it is better as long as it is better?

The Moto X should be on the Play Store as well which means there will be a non carrier version which will not have to deal with carrier approval.
I'm likely going to get it since it's a slimmer and smaller phone overall compared to other flagships. The Moto X's size is very comparable to the iPhone 5 while having the same screen size as the Nexus 4. I don't really mind the updates, since Google will likely sell this in the play store with a cheap off contract price along with the option of custom made orders.
I honestly can't wait until reviews start coming in, if it's not really compelling (the battery isn't that much better or camera) then I'll most likely keep my N4. I just hate the glass back and how wide the Nexus is in my hands.

What's next for Nexus 5 users??

Hopefully i'm not alone on an island when I say that the Nexus 6 is just too large for me. If i wanted a phablet, there are other alternatives. Having said that i was just curious what the future of Nexus is going to be? I suppose it's way too early to know, but just wanted to put my mind at ease because ever since the latest release, I'm really at a loss as to what my next phone purchase will be?
We now have the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, nexus 7, Nexus 9, Nexus 10? Will they refresh the current screen sizes with newer hardware? I really hope so cause screen size is the biggest factor now for me in terms of buying a nexus. If the nexus 4 had a refresh, i would have totally gone with that. Thoughts anyone?

If you're looking for your next phone, I HIGHLY recommend the new Moto X. Gorgeous and powerful hardware, stock Android with a few actually useful and innovative additions, and it's sold for a great price. I have both the N5 and Moto X and the X is an upgrade in every way, and IMO is the spiritual successor to the N5.
After not being able to get N6 64gb the last 3 weeks & playing with one at a tmobile store, I've decided its too big! My Nexus5 is still rocken for now. I'll be watching S810 device's announcements at CES Jan. 5, 2015. Maybe a Sony Xperia Z4/Z4 Ultra, M9 or other newly branded devices. Thin frame, stereo front speakers, 5.5 to 5.7 screen, unlockable, etc are my preferences...

Nah. Last year, I wanted at least a 5" 1080p display. Nexus 5 was close enough.
Agreed the NEXUS 6 is too large. Not the display, the entire phone. Anything larger than the LG G3 is too big for a phone, for me.
This year I wanted at least 5.2" 1440p (preferably the size of the LG G2) with Snapdragon 805. As late as mid-August Google was testing a 5.2" 1440p with Snapdragon 805 to be the NEXUS 6. But instead they they stupidly went with the monstrosity, and let Motorola release the 5.2" version as the Moto Maxx/Droid Turbo.
So in getting the Moto Maxx in spite of the silly capacitive buttons.
I'll have to check out the Motorola phones then, but the goal really for me is something smaller than 5 inches, but a "nexus" device for the fast updates.
Yea I'm in the same boat. The N6 is insanely big especially for my hands and there's really nothing that stands out about it besides fast updates. Now that it's nearly twice as much its put itself in a completely new category against the note 4 which literally destroys it in every way besides the front speakers and updates (I also prefer no buttons but since the galaxy phone home buttons are now fingerprint scanners it doesn't seem as bad) and I don't ever use the speaker in the phone besides occasionally showing a friend a YouTube vid or notifications. I'm between a note 4 and just keeping my n5 until s810s start popping up.
all the reviews for the Moto X (2014) cite a mediocre battery life and hit or miss camera results. Those are literally the two things holding back the N5.
Exactly. The Moto X could have been the top phone on the market but they failed on battery and cam. So I'm leaning toward the Droid Turbo, but I'm still not sold on it. The size is tolerable (N5 seems just right. N6 is ridiculous) and battery isn't as good as they claim but still far better than N5. Camera, I'm not sure. Mixed reviews I think.
Is the moto x even an upgrade in any area? The software seems to be what people like. The hardware is basically the same in every day use as a nexus 5 isn't it?
Nexus 6 is too big for hands, that's for sure. No way you're going to one-hand that with a cup of coffee in the other and still slide your metrocard to get on the subway. And forget about getting that thing into your pocket.
Why did they ruin our Nexus? And why are they charging twice as much? I'm actually very sad about all of this. Now I'm stuck with deciding between the Moto X and the Droid Turbo. Sucks.
You know what? I'm just gonna keep my Nexus 5. This phone rocks. Google just sent me a free refurb replacement, and with Lollipop, it feels like I have a brand new phone.
Nexus 5 is still a great smartphone and still a superb buy, even this time next year it still be decent and rocking with whatever latest Android is by then, plus hopefully Google will see sense and go back to a 5" or 5.2" screen & give either HTC or Sony a bash at a Nexus Smartphone, or better still have 2 Nexus Smartphones Phablet and standard to keep everybody happy.
I was very very close to getting a moto x, but after flashing lollipop, my Nexus was like a brand new device and I decided I would stick with it for a bit.
Then I was lucky enough to get an invite for the oneplus the other day and it is expected to arrive this weekend. We will still if that is a worth successor without being too big.

For now, I'll keep using the Nexus 5, although I initially wanted to buy the Nexus 6.
Unfortunately, the significant price increase (Nex 6 costs about 300 EUR more than a Nex 5 in the German Play Store) forced me to do the decision not to buy it. I primarily need a good developer phone, and 650 EUR for the Nex 6 is just waaaay to much money.
Best Regards,
Benjamin
I'm holding out to see what Samsung and HTC do in the spring. GS6 and M9. Nothing from this year impresses me. Scratch that... Note 4 hardware is impressive, but TouchWiz still kills it, as always.

Probably gonna wait for the nexus release next year. Price is way too high for a nexus 6. I'm good with a 5.in fact I bought a used one about a month ago and it's still a very fantastic phone for its price. I'm kicking myself now for not buying it 1year earlier.
absolutely moto X
Z3c
LG G3 with cyanogenmod for the win phone has the right hardware, size, removable battery , now we just need the right ROM. Until then I'll stick to the N5.
I was wanting the Xperia Z3, but ****ing Sony and their DRM removal when you unlock the bootloader... the camera turns to **** and the modem/radio doesn't even work when you unlock the bootloader! I'm watching the Note 4.

Goodbye Nexus 5!! Google takes Nexus 5 off the new "Google Store"

Google announced the new Google store but the listing of Nexus 5 is gone .

Clicking phones on https://store.google.com/ take you to the Nexus 6 listing https://store.google.com/product/nexus_6
The Nexus 5 has no place on the new site. This was speculated a while ago but just the feeling of it being off the store is awful.
I love the Nexus 5 with its quirks, endless issues and powerful specs at the price we never imagined.
Yep, not available for sale anymore https://store.google.com/product/nexus_5
I really do hope they replace it with another 5" device.
I'd love for there to always be both a "normal" phone and a phablet in the Nexus line.
Especially since I have no desire for a phablet, and I've only ever purchased nexus devices. I managed to skip the Nexus 6, but my N5 definitely won't last another year after.
I think it was taken off sale on purpose to push nexus 6 sales, me personally id rather have the 5. The 6 is nice but i know from nexus devices they are usually cheap and good for performance with a few corners cut, I couldn't buy the 6 for its price knowing there is better phones out there at a cheaper price

Loved my Nexus 5. Loved it. Slightly bigger screen (5'2"), bigger battery, it would have been perfect.
I sold it for the Moto Maxx (same specs as Nexus 6, also made by Motorola but 5.2" and 3900 mAh battery) but I still have fond memories. And my wife loves her Nexus 5.
For the specs it had and the price, it was fantastic.
yup , its gone from indian play store too ..
We will see it return.. Stronger and faster than it was before..
Cue Six Million Dollar Man theme music.
who knows? maybe there will be Nexus 5 2015 edition hihihi :fingers-crossed:
The Nexus 5 will still be for sale new on Ebay and Amazon among others. It's not going anywhere for a while. You can even still buy a new Nexus One if you wanted. Just because the play store has stopped selling it means nothing.
There will be.

Everyone has their own opinions....its mine...."discontinued" feels bit low..
I seriously hope they continue with the 5 inch Nexus series. Nexus has the best development community by far. We get all the new roms and features way before other phones.
I fear developers will jump ship to another brand if the only available Nexus is a 6 inch...

Technically discontinued is right. But I'd assume since the Nexus 5 is better or probably on par with most flagships nearly this long after it's 2013 release, people consider it as like a limited edition phone.. I'm on the fence. While I also feel that technically it is discontinued, I also feel like the value of the Nexus 5 may slightly increase because it's still a great phone for development and it's going to be harder to find, and the Nexus 5 IMHO was probably the best Nexus phone released to date, the Nexus 6 is a phablet and honestly don't know much about it's successor based on it's size I immediately figured it would be the wrong phone for me, plus I've heard the Nexus 6 had it's share of problems like any phone. Nexus 5 had their initial batches which were flawed in design somewhat and they updated the form factor for it.
(very proud to say I have a 32GB launch edition white Nexus 5 btw)

Beyond the Nexus 5

My first Nexus device was the Nexus 4. I loved the quick updates but the battery life was pathetic and it seemed to age quite quickly. I then moved to a Samsung Galaxy S4 but got annoyed over the slow updates around November 2014, I purchased the Nexus 5 and I have been really happy with it. Battery life still isn't that great (although much better than the Nexus 4) but the quick updates are amazing. It's also aged really well and still running reasonably ok. I wasn't keen on the Nexus 6 as this is far too big but I am now starting to think of what phone I should get to replace the Nexus 5.
What phones are you all considering? The obvious choice seems to be to wait for the next Nexus phone but I'm not sure if they'd keep in line with the Nexus 5 or 6 (they might do both). Plus, it'd be quite a few months away so in the meantime I was thinking of the LG G4 as LG seem to be quite good with updates.
Thoughts and suggestions?

Still didn't change their bad behave, you will never believe the cost down of their product. Company like sharp and HTC will tight control everything use in their product down to rev., sometime it may down to specific batch and have a quite large margin for the design. For average user you won't notice anything, but if you take a look at the circuit you may wonder by their miracle.

I do not agree. It is my opinion that HTC is not the same, and does not have the same quality that they did years ago. It is also my opinion that Samsung devices have seriously gone down in quality.
For power users like us, we desire top of the line devices. We expect them to perform to a standard that the average user does not.
For the average user who just needs to check email and receive MMS picture messages of their grandkids, cheap Chinese phones can't be beat. If you want more, then yeah you have to pay more and buy from a bigger named company.
I´m also happy with my Nexus 5 and this device is still one of the best around, in terms of performance.
If I were you, I would wait a few months for the next Nexus device to be released. Who knows, maybe Google will release a Nexus 5 ( 2015 ) or a slightly smaller Nexus 6 ( 2015 ) ?
Its nice to have a new phone every now and again, but I would wait a while to see what happens with the next Nexus phone; it might just make you fall in love with the Nexus family again.
I think they will make a smaller Nexus phone this year. I'd like a 5.5 or 5.2in device with thin bezels.
I just wish it would be small enough (5") and has a better camera hardware (Nexus 5's is quite a bit lacking).
Save your money for next nexus. If rumors are true we will get 5.2" lg nexus phone. Im hoping for 2k display with quantum technology, type-c usb (because google hinted that in some video), fixed snapdragon 810 or 808 which is in lg g4, 3000mah battery, 13 or 16mp camera with lg's new ois, 3-4gb of ram (more likely it will be 3).

Ok you convinced me, patience is a virtue after all I'm sure the next Nexus would be awesome, I really don't like the direction they went with the Nexus 6 but rumours say that this was originally part of the Android Silver program (or whatever it was called) and it was only switched back to a Nexus phone last minute. Anyway, fingers crossed that the next Nexus is as awesome (or more so) than the Nexus 5 and equally good value for money.
I preordered an LG G4 yesterday, I have just cancelled the order. I love my Nexus 5! I may be tempted to buy a Nexus 5 (2015) if the rumours are true though

If the next Nexus is released in October then I think we're due for some major rumour/leaks about now. The feature at the top of my wishlist for the phone is a very large battery with some serious battery optimisation. Together creating a phone that exceptional run time far more than anything else on the market.
The speculations for each new nexus are always over blown and never live up to the hype. That said I've owned then all. After the nexus 6 (too big), I an looking for alternatives. I am fully planning to get a g4. I'm kind of tired of nexus cameras and battery life. If it wasn't for those 2 things (that and the memory leak that more ram should help) I could probably make it another year with my nexus 5.

This was my thinking with the LG G4 because the line of phones has stood the test of time. The LG G2 was released over a year and a half ago but it's still holding up well and LG are still supporting it with Lollipop (although it takes a while for the update to reach the phone). Something tells me the LG G4 could easily be supported for 2 years if not more. However, although the battery is around 3000mAh, it doesn't have amazing battery life. Much better than the Nexus 5 and would easily take most through the whole day but I'm really thinking that a phone that can easily take most people through 48 hours is a new standard that should be strived by manufacturers.
The s6 is tempting for me. I'd be gutted if nexus realesed a beast though. Can't beat pure android.
I owned a Nexus 6 for a couple months. I never liked the size and couldn't get used to it. I also hated the shape of the phone. It was not stable laying a desk. Surprisingly, I use my phone one handed while it lays on a desk a lot to send texts. That weird curved back wobbles and spins if you try to use it one handed like that. I also don't understand why people want such a high resolution phone. It just hurts performance and in a 5 inch package more than 1080p seems pointless.
I have switched back to my Nexus 5 and sold the 6 and am so much happier. I know now that I never want a phone larger than the Nexus 5. I am also on Sprint which makes buying a non-carrier phone virtually impossible. Basically I am stuck hoping the Nexus 5 refresh is small or keeping an eye on something like the Galaxy S6/HTC M9 AOSP custom rom scene which I really don't want to mess around with.

Nexus 5 has a really great camera, just compare it to nexus 4 camera. Its still 8mpx and that much better. Now imagine 13mpx with lg's new ois and camera API that allows you to use camera sensor in full glory. I would really like 16mpx camera on a phone like galaxy s6 has, but remember, its a phone, it has a camera to quickly capture moments when your "professional" camera is not near you. But i agree about battery, it should be better on stock factory image then it is, and they always put smaller battery in there. Maybe because it would kill oem's flagship phone that way.

We are not in dinosaur era where big screens were massive battery hoggers. Today you can easily get 2k display which uses the same amount of energy like 1080p screen (not on full brightness ofcourse). Also hardware is so good that it can easily push 2k without any performance drops (qualcomm wouldnt make 2k support in their cpu if it cant keep it up, especially for flagship devices, because if their processor fails to complete oem's tasks, oem will not buy from them anymore). Also, you noticed google is going colors in lollipop, why wouldnt you take advantage of that with a great 2k display and enjoy even more. I rather have better screen than 15min more battery.

I generally agree with you, except that I don't have any other cameras. I'm not a professIonal. I'm only going to shoot in auto, but that doesn't mean I don't want them to look as good as possible . I think large percentage of us these days fit into that category.

I too dont have a camera, but really phones cant substitute real camera. The only devices which are close are lg g4 and galaxy s6, but these devices are flagships, i dont think you will see that kind of camera on nexus phone because.. Well, its a nexus. If they make it a budget phone again, im sure you wont get that great camera. But maybe google surprises us.

Keep nexus 6 or get Moto X Pure Edition

New moto X looks pretty awesome... I don't see any reason not to switch... Anyone else thinking of doing the same?

Smaller screen ,not amoled , and basically the same hardware.Nexus 6 should be faster with updates.
I can't find a reason to switch to moto x style.
If i do it ,i will pick a device with better specs (4gb ram,sd810).
First smartphone that i can think of is oneplus two.
The new nexus device(s) are not that far away either.
I'm going for the moto style that's what it's called in UK looks great and loving the build of my N6 so the new moto x style should be awesome and the price is good..

You wouldn't pick up a Moto X because no 4gb of ram or 810 (which what good is an 810 if it had to be throttled to not overheat) or no amoled screen yet would pick up a oneplus two thats lacking.....
QHD screen
sd card support
NFC
Quick Charging
Front facing speakers
smaller mp camera
smaller screen than Moto X
Can only be activated on att& and tmobile
Need an invite to purchase
I'm sorry....what???
That's 20MP is tempting me to switch.
Grabbed the Nexus 6 originally in hopes that moto suite could be ported over. That has turned out to be pretty much a fail, so getting the moto x pure is probably the next best thing. Can't wait to get it! At this point if moto apps haven't been ported over to the nexus 6 I have a feeling it never will.

I can understand your thoughts and questions.
1)Nothing beats the deep blacks of amoled display.I get it that nexus's 6 display is not calibrated but i don't care that much.My projector needs to be calibrated, the screen of my phone doesn't have to (my opinion).I choose infinite contrast than accurate colors.Basically i prefer to have both , but samsung devices lost me as a customer since the implementation of knox counter.
2)sd810 is way better than 808 even if it throttles. My previous flex 2 did throttle but only in benchmarks.Had no impact on real life usage or gaming. The andreno of the 810 is a beast compared to the one of 808.You need that power when you have to deal with qhd screens. Also oneplus promised a better tuned sd810 for oneplus two model.
3)The oneplus 2 doesn't have quick charging but it charges relatively quick (early reports) and i personally never used nfc.Oneplus two will probably have better battery life performance than motorola style.
4)Will miss the dual speakers, and would like an sd card, i admit it
5)Camera performance was never that great on a Motorola device and more mpixels will not make guaranteed difference.I trust more the one on oneplus two (had oneplus one before)
6)I am from Europe , usually we don't depend that much on carriers .
7)Invite system sucks , but if you need one, you will get it easily.
8)The oneplus (and nexus 6) have great support on xda with unlocked bootloader and no warranty loss.
I am not saying that style is a bad device, not at all.I am just not receiving the "flagship" feeling of the other devices (no amoled , no 4gb ram , no sd810).For my needs, the nexus 6 is still the better one.
