If you're experiencing random lag and stutters ... - Nexus 5 General

I don't know if it's been mentioned before but I was having annoying lag and stutters , I still am but it's gotten better , for me it was the Google music widget that I had on one of my homescreens ( I only have 3 homescreens in case you ask) , if you have it try getting rid of it and also deactivate the chrome option to have the chrome tabs shown on "recent apps /task switcher " also try to keep your recent tabs with the less amount of cards possible , I know that the fact that they're there doesn't mean they're opened , maybe it's a placebo effect but it feels like some those apps in there are really running in the background even when they're not supposed to do so, sometimes I used the app days ago and it is in the back of the "cards " and it still is running , they're called "recent apps" not opened apps ...
Google music with material design is really laggy ! I will get rid of it completely but its proving to be quite hard since I really enjoy having my music one click away on the cloud .
Chrome still has its "jank " and chopping scrolling sometimes but there's not much we can do .
I don't really understand the lag , it really it's random , sometimes I'm heavy multitasking and I have no issues and sometimes I'm just using chrome and twitter and it lags like crazy , or it just lags while scrolling on the home screen (google now stock launcher )
Have you had any of these issues ?

So are you basically saying if you have lag in an app. Delete the app and the lag will be gone? Lol... ?
Sent from my Android 5.0 Nexus 5

I use Play Music heavily. All access pass, it's my go to music app. Never noticed any lag on it though. I use it all day, every day.

System memory leaks have nothing to do with anything you mentioned.

Well they're bogging the whole is down , the lag is not only on the app so I would suggest delete the app until it gets properly optimized Haha [emoji28]

Read about it yesterday , I'm hoping it really is the cause of the issue but it looks like people with 5.0.1 are still experiencing lag , maybe we have to wait for 5.1?

It think you're mixing things up with iOS here. In Android apps are suposed to continue running in the background. It's on iOS where apps in the background are paused and which features no real multitasking.

I'm using Uber kernel and don't have any lags.

And listening to music for an hour drains 4-6 percent of battery... I thought music was supposed to be lower power...
Anyhow, the only lag I see in that app is when I open it and hit the menu and then my library and scroll over. I'll have a slight second of stutter once I get inside and scroll down my list but other than that it seems smooth for me. Battery leaves less than be desired.

There will always be a slight lag here and there. I too experience lag when open Play Music. Sometimes there's no lag, sometimes there's a slight pause or delay in opening.

I have these kinds of stutters and lags about once a week and that's the time I reboot my phone to flash the latest build of my rom.
There are a lot of memory leaks in lollipop or at least there are in the ROM which I'm using (AICP). System App ram consumption shoots up to 1.4 GB and there's immense lag.
I've started to ignore it since a simple reboot fixes it.

Lol... I was hopping a fix for a stuttering in notification drawer pull....
I didn't expect this

I had also serious lags, however, I updated yesterday to GooglePlayServices 6.5.99 (-438) and so far the lag is gone.
Maybe worth a try?

On the Issue Tracker at
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=79729
someone today mentioned that same fix and provide a link to the APK. But the post with the link was removed from the issue tracker.
I currently have Play Services 6.5.87 (1599771-438)
When I search the Play Store with Chrome the update shows up
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.gms&hl=en
(the update is dated Dec 12, 2014)
However the update does not show up using the Play Store app on the N5 device.
The Google Play website says the update is compatible with all my devices. But on the device list to install the update, my N5 is greyed out and I can only highlight my Android tablet.
Why is Google not allowing me to install the Play Services update on the N5 when I have the previous version?
Or maybe the update is not ready for the N5, just like Android 5.0.1 is not ready?
But how are other folks installing the Play Services update? Link anyone so I can sideload?

Finding reasons for reboots

Hi,
Im just curious how to track down the reason for reboots with stock ROM and stock kernel, not rooted. I had one random reboot yesterday (when watching trailers in the IMDB app) after almost a week I own N7. I know that one reboot in a week is nothing, but its my new toy and Id like to know how to track down the reason for that in case it happens again.
I found out some threads about this and generally it says I should use LogCat - but I dont know how to use it. So I please ask for help! For now, I started Stability Test (CPU+GPU) and wait ...
Happy New Year, Y'all !!!
EDIT: Ghardashyan a bit lower mentioned hes been having reboots when watching youtube videos. Anybody else having this kind of behavior? Also, I had my reboot when watching trailers in the IMDB app - its playing via youtube, right?
The ONLY reboot I have ever seen, is when the default lockscreen widget gets updated by the marketplace. It's guaranteed to reboot on 4.2. It does it every time on both my Nexus 4 and my Nexus 7.
You will only ever see it, if you remove the default android 4.2 lockscreen time widget and put something else there from the marketplace, and only when that widget gets a marketplace file update.
Perhaps you are seeing this? Do you have auto-update apps enabled???

I dont have auto-update enabled. I added another time/weather widget to the lockscreen but I dont think it got updated yesterday ... I will remove it and hope it wont reboot again. I sure think it was some app as the stability test goes for 2 hours without problem.

Its to do with location based services, HD Widgets is a major culprit and stated they were talking to Google to try and resolve the issue, it is also as stated before mainly because of the new lockscreen widgets, which HD Widgets also provide, so the stock widget could also cause the same issue?
Mine have pretty much stopped with the last update of HD Widgets, but it does still occur.

Since you're on stock rom and kernel, I think the best way would be to reset your device and keep track of what applications are installed, one at a time.
My guess is that one of the installed apps are causing it..

I know that, but as it was one reboot only in less than a week, it could take months to track the app down ... Im about to restart the device myself and then use alogrec to continually record stuff.
EDIT: Alogrec is not recording a thing, so I rooted my phone. In case of restart, I believe it should be enough to save last_kmsg. Am I right?

Correlation does not equal causation and it seems some are eager to go barking up the wrong tree. As has been stated here, as well as confirmed by Google, it is a bug at the OS level. It has nothing to do, per say, with HD Widgets, YouTube, or any individual app. It affects all products running 4.2 and 4.2.1.
Until Google fixes the issue, there are only two guaranteed workarounds- disable location services or downgrade to 4.1.2.

Settings › Location. Bear in mind that the tradeoff is that, among other things, Google Now will no longer be functional.
For me, the reboots haven't been annoying enough to warrant disabling it on mine just yet.

Great, thanks. :good: I disabled that for now and will turn it on only when I need navigation. I dont use Google Now anyway.
BTW, when Google finds a solution for this, should I expect a full system upgrade?
Just experienced my first random reboot while streaming a flash video on Firefox Beta..
Random reboots are annoying me as well with my stock unrooted n7
Mostly though its during wifi/network activity not just in one app, have had reboots while in youtube, ebay, chrome etc. I have also seen it reboot while in standby
All started from 4.2
Would be interested to know if these reboots are reported back to google?

[Q] [help] problem with Xperia T

I don't know is this really a problem or not, but it really bother. my broblem is about multitasking, it looks like my phone doesn't have multitasking (like ios! )
for example I open opera and let it load some pages then ttpod and play a music, after them go to an explorer, and I go back to opera it's now closed and I have to re-load the pages.
overall I can't keep more than 2-3 apps open at the same time.
is there any solution for this problem?

I've tried background process in the setting, but I still have this problem. There is no "max" option, only "at most 4 processes"
I've tried some tweaks with some apps such as Pimp my Rom and Android tuner but to be honest it made it even worse! and I had to do full wipe!
@greg, it's not just about opera, I can't run more than 2-3 apps in background.

you use opera for FB, hm?
that version of Opera mini comes with many bugs, one of them is AutoRotation, when you rotate your phone, it jumps out of the app, maybe another bug is what you are facing, not being able to chache the pages in background, MAYBE...
try another browser, like Default or Dolphin or Chrome, and see if the problem is still there with those apps, if not, then the problem is BUGGY opera mini, which i guess so

it's so weird
never experienced this issue, in NO phone of mine
i know this might a bit noobie guide, but first of all, uninstall unnecessary apps, maybe you've loaded your phone with a ton of apps, which certainly eat up RAM even if they are not running, that's the way Android manages RAM, so, uninstall whatever thing you don't use...
if the problem still exists there, then update your phone or flash another firmware, for example go back to ICS to see it helps or not..

Removal of bloatware really helps here. I find Firefox sometimes closes as it uses a lot of memory, but it beats all others in terms of usability + ability to download any files (sometimes chrome or stock just downloads a dumb .txt file, can't believe they still haven't fixed that) but yeah remove useless apps it helps a lot

[Q] The Lag of Facebook app Saga

People, I don't know what to do. I really want to use Facebook's app in my P880, but it cause too much lag over all other applications and resources. Sometimes I need to wait 30s to use my phone, mainly when a turn data or wi-fi on. When this app isn't installed I have a normal experience.
I just tried:
- Stock Rom, CM11 Rom, Euphoria OS;
- Stock Kernel, Iodak Kernel;
- Best Facebook clients are not updating since 2013;
- Facebook on browser, are fast but can't open images entire screen and can't provide notifications;
- Change options in app;
- Change Performance options of each ROM.
Please, if someone had sucess to run the app without this mad lag share with us.

I used to untick all autoruns of the APP using 3c toolbox. This reduces it's effect on general system performance but there are still a few services of it running, you have to turn them off at every boot.
Still, the facebook is badly coded/optimized and I prefer to use my web browser to browse facebook since I get notifications with SMS anyway.
Facebook app is among the worst ever Android apps made. As you too noticed, mainly on network change, it gets insanely laggy. It just isn't worth using.
Thank you, guys!

Sad, but true! I can't understand what they want with this. My wife's Samsung S4 can run it, just with small lags inside app, but it is another class of phone.

Phone is soooo slow!!!

Afternoon peeps,
Recently my Mini 2 has just ground to an unusable, good-for-nothing pile of crap.
- It is soooo slow to do anything.
- It rotates the screen when it's not being rotated.
- It locks in the middle of performing tasks.
- It blacks out for 30 seconds or so before becoming responsive again.
- Voice on Google Maps or Runkeeper apps keeps glitching.
I'm running CM12 [12-20150411-NIGHTLY-memul] with TWRP recovery.
Reinstalling the ROM returns the phone to a normal function, temporarily, before descending into chaos.
Clearing the cache partition sort of works....for a little while.
I/O Scheduler is ROW.
Storage isn't anywhere near full with 3.65Gb free.
Available RAM is on average about 170Mb
My thoughts are that an app is causing this.
Can anyone throw some troubleshooting ideas into the pot?
Thanks

Clearing cache and ram just makes it worst as Android works different from PC's.
It seems you're in the good path as just need to find what APP is doing that. Providing that you run CM12 without extras and its ok, than try install/uninstall one app at the time until you find the one its causing trouble

Well CM12 its a bit buggy so if you gonna run high end apps i suggest stock ROM.
Regarding RAM, android manages that pretty well for you. The more ram in use, the better things work. (if you know how RAM works) same thing with cache. So don't use stupid programs to clear RAM as they are useless.
You can google for more info.

Interesting, the reason I'm on CM with this HTC is because the Stock ROM also showed the same symptoms, so I moved to CM to try to cure. I really liked the stock UI and was reluctant to move away from it.
I do know RAM and that does make sense - more stuff in RAM = quicker access to resouces, but surely its still a good troubleshooting step to clear down if these problems arise?

Like i said, Android will clear the apps when it need to open resources for another.
Reading back your posts, you might need to do full re-installation .
If you install Google Apps bundle, start with re-flashing that. if still no good then go for the all ROM.
But you say that it also happened with stock rom so finding the app that's causing that its crucial.
Also note the apps that stay open in the background (click the 2 Squares) only nine stay open but all you need its a game to keep eating all the resources.

I've begun by uninstalling OneFootball and Facebook and performance has improved somewhat. This might be quite a long process as im going go leave a day or so between each action.
I have fully reinstalled before, but selected to restore data and apps from backup. Maybe I'll try setting up as a new device if it comes to it. Want to avoid that tho.

Did you find a solution? I'm facing about the same issue with my HTC One Mini 2 after installing CM12. It ran perfectly smooth in the beginning but now it is soooo slow and it takes forever to load almost any apps (especially Facebook and Snapchat).

I think it's either Facebook or Facebook Messenger, probably more messenger.
I first uninstalled Facebook Messenger and performance improved. Still a little glitchy, but much better.
Then I uninstalled Facebook. Not much change.
Facebook is now reinstalled, but messenger isn't and I've been happier with the phone.
I'm still getting some background apps crashing, but not as much as before uninstalling FB messenger.
Not really a 'solution' as it could be different for you, but as mentioned previously, start uninstalling an app at a time. Leave a few days inbetween so you can tell if it changed anything. If not, reinstall and try again.
Same issue here with mini 2..i dont have facebook or that football app

What on earth is OPPO playing at with the new update I've just received on my X5 Pro

I have just had CPH2305_11_A.18 pushed to my UK X5 Pro with the April security update and now scrolling in the Google play store is unusable, It's a complete stuttery mess!
I've rebooted twice and still the same, It's so bad It's unreal and not been tested.
This has to be to be down to these stupid LTPO displays messing about with the refresh rate constantly and what makes matters worse OPPO do not have any option whatsoever like Samsung to force 120Hz all the time whether it's in the display options or dev options.
Can someone test this out with the new update, It's a total mess for scrolling in the play store now since the update.
How do we report bugs to OPPO?
Weird it seems to be a little smoother now, I still don't think this variable refresh changing is helping to keep things smooth.
Hey, just tested play store. Yes not the smoothest experience. Seems to get confused between down and sideways swipes. It works fine on an actual list of items.
Glad to see the power button can now actually be a power button. They're clearly listening

Yes it wasn't like that when I got the phone it was smooth in the play store and 100% correct it keeps scrolling sideways even though I am not, No Idea what's going on but it seems a right mess to me.
For sure I was definitely missing that feature with the power button and now they have fixed that at least, I guess they take users feedback which is a positive.
hi there,
i use this to force the 120hz all the time, dont know if will help you with your problem.

Hey thanks for that I think someone else suggested that which worked for YouTube but I wonder if this is a newer version and works with Instagram also I'll give it a go thank you!
Updates seem to always have a processing period where the first few hours/days would have issues in lag. Once the update has finished (including adapting to other apps), it works better.

Yes I did notice too also, I have no idea why that is the case but wierdly it did sort of do that in the play store for some reason.

Apparently, it takes time for the 3rd party apps to adapt to the new update. It is especially true when you're in Beta version.
i agree there are micro stutters gitters throughout the ui on new update. like pulling down notification panel also.

That app doesn't work for me Google photos is a slow refresh rate, but if I use the one from the Video it works great.
The stutter like pulling noticificafion bar down has always been there with the Video app even after factory resetting :/
