[Q] Software upgrade??? - HTC Desire 500

I was in the car and I needed to hurry up, and when I unlocked my screen a window popped up, having the title "Software Upgrade" and when I read it, it said "Your software needs to be upgraded in 30 days. Upgrade it now or after 30 days has passed" and I had the choice of picking Cancel or Upgrade, but as I was hurrying up, I chose "Cancel" and now I don't know if it was an application that had to be upgraded or my phone's system??? The apps I am using are WhatsApp and Viber, did the message come from one of them? I can't believe now that I canceled it..

[Q] Some basic questions...

Being rather new to android based tiny wee computers that just happen to make phone calls I am just a bit reluctant to 'experiment' with my shiny SGS (hence not previously applying anything but normal apps). Having said that, last week after reading of the whizzyness of FROYO via the registry hack, I went and convinced kies that it was swedish and popped FROYO on my phone. After some nail biting it whizzed along like a new-new toy and I was one happy bunny.
Although I am still very happy with it it has one or two niggles such as Skyfire, as of today, locking up and FCing after 30 secs of use for some reason (not tried just reinstalling yet so that may help) and the odd freeze with Angry birds etc requiring a reboot. I am Vodafone contract in the UK (but not with a branded phone even before the froyo) and was told ages ago i would get an OTA update when it came out.
I saved a copy of the original kies registry keys just in case but just wondered (a) is reverting to Eclaire is possible, and if so how? (b) will popping the old settings back into the kies registry cause WWIII and an alien invasion if i reconnect my SGS (c) When, eventually, i get the OTA notification will this overwrite the current OS no matter what or will it just go meh...i can't be bothered?
All relevant data/contacts etc were backed up on the PC prior to the update.
Cheers
Herne
I have some other basic questions for my new Galaxy 5 which I am very close to hurling at a wall.
First and foremost, how do I turn off the "always on mobile?" I can find the always on button, which is green for on, but pressing it doesn't turn it off. That box appears to be greyed out. I know it seems odd that I'd have a phone like this and not use the internet, but I buy minutes instead of contract (typical here in Dubai) and I went through about 3 months worth of minutes in about 4 days. grrrrrrr
Second, on my old phone (a Treo) to check my minutes, I dialed *121#. In a second or 2 a screen would pop up telling me how many minutes I had left. On this phone, it seems to go through the process, but never actually pops up an answer screen.
Third, in setting up my phone, I told it I have a gmail account, which I do. It pulled a massive and utterly out of date address book from my gmail account and made it my default address book. How can I delete this or at least make it NOT my default?
Fourth, I've been promised that I will adjust to the pad of finger press process instead of my perfectly good and utterly accurate fingernail. When am I going to stop pressing the wrong buttons? Is there a way to make it sensitive enough for a fingernail instead of a sausage finger?
Fifth, I'm trying to sync my outlook calendar with the phone. It's erroring out, saying Execution Privilege prevents accessing Outlook. Please try again with Administrator .... (I lost the end of this because I decided to kill the phone and start from scratch)

[Q] No input after store reset

Hiya. I have a Kyocera Zio with Cricket. Last week at some point, I got a text message saying that an update was available. So I went through the settings and checked for an update and it asked me if I wanted to begin download (I was on WiFi). I did so, less than a minute later, it asked me if I wanted to reboot. I did so, remembering that there are supposed to be three parts to the update. It told me there was an update, I accepted, it asked again to reboot, so I did. The third time, it told me there was an update, I accepted and waited.
It was taking a while, so I left it plugged in to do as it would. I came back later to find it continuously rebooting. It would show the Kyocera screen, the Cricket screen, and finally the Android screen, but then it would reboot. I left it again just in case. Close to an hour later, it was doing the same, so I took out the battery, put it back in and tried again. The same series of continuous rebooting happened. I tried on and off for a few days and only once got something different - at some point, having done nothing differently, it got to the 1.6 lock screen, but was frozen there.
Yesterday, I took it to a corporate store and asked them to reset it. They did so. It got to the screen where it tells you to touch the android (sounds dirty, really) and the animated hand - which was animated - but it didn't react to my touch. I also couldn't turn it off. Figuring I'd be waiting another hour if I put my name in the machine to get in line again, I took the battery out and left, hoping I could figure it out when I got home.
Now, the "end call" button does indeed work, because it will turn the phone on. The "volume up", "start call", trackball, and "end call" work because the reset combination works (though it gets stuck with text on the Kyocera screen). However, when the phone is turned on normally, it gets to the "touch the android" screen with the animated hand, but doesn't accept any input, whether button or touch screen.
Is this phone bricked?
Take it back to the cricket store that reset it. Its now their liability. If your phone is borked, they may be liable to give you a new one.

I would have to concur. Anything we can help you do would put the liability back into your hands. We can offer advice on how to fix your problem but it should be used as a "last resort" if the store simply cannot help you.
Feel free to come back, should you need to.
My orginal zio did the same thing on march 4th.
Did everything to a t and all it kept doing was a constant rebooting loop my 1.6 desktop came up but my screen would not respond to my touches just kept rebooting after 2 or 3 minutes.
Took it to the corp store and the women who works there told me on march 6th that the update is not sopossed to be released to the public yet and that i shouldnt have installed it and accused me of using a pirated version of the 2.2 and that is why my phone is bricked.
I told her no i didn't that i had a check mark on the task bar (i call it a task bar cause it looks like windows a bit) and when i pulled it down it said a kyocera update is avalible and i had to use my wifi to get it.
She was like well we don't have the stuff here to reflash it yet and she was still insisting that i was using a pirated version so she went in the back and asked someone else and then came back out and had a new boxed zio in her hand she was like the update was released and i did not know that i asked her how long you worked here and she was like over 2 yrs (she must not pay attention at the meetings) so she gave me a new phone but charged me 20 dollars to replace the phone cause she was like it was over 30 days or 30 minutes i was madder then a bull with his balls tied up she didn't even give me an apology.
Went to mcdonalds down the road cause they got free wifi and did the update again and it went thru 100% this time.
Now i can't root my phone to get my boot screen back on androot and root explorer don't want to play nice together.

[Q] Error 80180083 during Update and Restore! Help!

Last night when i connected my phone to the PC through ZUNE software, i was notified i have a software update from HTC. I proceeded with the upgrade, properly following the instructions. Problem was the update stopped at 9/10, even after i waited for 20 minutes still no change (phone is still working that time).
But when i tried to do RESTORE my phone through ZUNE again (i was worried software update was not fully successful) i received an error 80180083 ("the data received was corrupt or not valid") around 70% status. It asked me to disconnect phone. Now the phone is stuck with a picture showing me to connect my phone to the pc. When i do this, it will try to do a restore again but will repeatedly fail the same as before.
Even if i do a HARD reset (power BUTTON + up&down VOLUME), i will still get the same screen showing me the picture to connect my phone to the PC. Nothing seems to correct this problem (i consulted Microsoft Answers website for this, no clear solution so far and some people submitted their phones to HTC).
Anybody recently encountered this? Let me know how you resolved this problem...
Thanks!

Just found this link hope its of some help to you
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2484484
Thanks for your help but I just sent in my phone for repair. Apparently the motherboard was replaced.
When i redid my update after getting back my phone, it was definintely faster. The update was succesful!
The major difference is the amount of memory space on my phone - previously my remaining space was ard 600mb (lots of music) compared to post repair (14G). Maybe that made my previous update difficult. I think it's best to remove files before doing the update, esp when it nearing full.
Just my 2 cents...

"Check for update not available" error

Here's a new one, at least for me...when I hit my system update check button in about phone, my Bionic is spitting out
"check for update is not available
at this time.
Try again later,"
Has anyone else ever seen this message? It looks like its happening on 4G or wifi, haven't forced 3g and tried yet.
Usually I expect the "Your phone is up to date" message, but this one's new to me.
I'm bone stock, btw...no rooting yet.
I got that a few times yesterday and then tried again 10min later and it ran the check successfully but didn't find an update. When I ran the check for updates this morning it found the update and downloaded/installed successfully.
Well, that's encouraging I suppose...every time I think I really like this phone, something like this pops up...ugh, I want bionic speed and HP, but with my OG droid and droid X's "it just works" reliability.
I think the only reason you're seeing this error is because the servers are under a very heavy load pushing out the updates. I never saw this error before yesterday. But I'm with you on the frustration factor. I'm on my 4th Bionic now, if I continue to get the black screen of death, random reboots, or data connection issues, I'm going to do whatever I can to get a different phone. I've never had to return a phone to Vz before this model, nor I have ever spent so much on a phone. I certainly don't feel like I'm getting what I paid for. How this phone made it thru user testing with these issues blows my mind.
I had been getting that message ever since I replaced my SIM a couple months ago. I figured it wouldnt interfere with me getting any OTA's, but last night I decided to do a factory reset to see if that cleared it up. Low and behold i hit system updates and it said my system was up to date. An hour or so later I did it again and I got the update!
Good to know. I read a thread somewhere, I think it pertained to battery issues, and someone suggested that when you first take the phone out of the box the first thing you should do is a factory reset b/c it helps with overall performance. I don't know if there's any truth to that but that's what I've done on all of my replacement Bionics and I do perceive there to be some improvement. I don't know if it was necessary but I ran the reset after receiving the OTA today too just to rule that out if I have issues going forward - that's the first thing tech support makes you do when you have problems from my experience anyway.
I've been getting that message a lot too when checking for the update. I got the update today and it installed fine. Still have the data drops though. VERY frustrating.
One think I HAVE noticed with this update is that the battery stats are completely reversed. It used to be the display was down in the 3-5% region, as well as the Android OS. Now, those 2 are at the top, and my phone has just been laying on my desk most of the day.
I am not rooted. I've been getting that message since I got the phone in October. It only happens when I am on 3G. I haven't checked it on 4G (don't live near one) and it says "...up to date" when I am on WiFi.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
I am getting frustrated... I have been getting the same error for three days now. I am rooted, but am on 5.5.886 and everything still the same. My partner is still original stock, and he's getting the same errors as well. Perhaps this is a regional thing? Anyone in the DC area get the update rolled out to them?
Additionally, can I just flash the update file that is posted here on the forums to upgrade manually? Or should I just wait?
Works!
I was getting the same "check for updates not available at this time" message, however I rebooted (used Quickboot, battery pull is not necessary). After the reboot went back to "Check for upgrade" and it worked; BUT just like the previous upgrade the process checks your file system and if you removed/altered any bloatware then it will fail and reboot. After the first time, I decided instead to create a folder "bloatware" in the system direction and move all bloatware apps to that folder. So this time around all I had to do was move all the bloatware back to the "app" folder in one shot. Very easy and straight forward (I also wrote down the bloatware apk filenames so I didn't forget that I moved over last time). Tried the update again, installed just fine, and phone is up and running.
AND....root is INTACT!
Btw...I had no idea there was a new update available until my friend who just got a new Bionic said he's having problems rooting on software v5.9.902

[Q] text and data still work fine, phone doesn't work...

You guys helped me root and customize my captivate a year ago, and all has been working fine until now. I barely know enough to be dangerous...
With no notice, my phone stopped working unexpectedly. When I try to place a call, everything works normally right up to the "call" screen. But instead of placing the call, the green button immediately goes away. No error messages, no nothing. When others call me, my phone does not respond, and the caller gets sent straight to voicemail.
Texts and data messages continue to function normally. I can take out the SIM, put it in my wife's new Captivate, and use the phone just fine. I've removed battery, done a hard reset, and searched the forum for solutions. No luck yet.
The only thing I've knowingly done to the phone lately is to repeatedly remove/reinstall the SIM, as I've been using it to set up my wife's new phone. I have Titanium Backup, but many of the system functions (such as dialer) inexplicably show no backup available. I have also done a scan with Lookout, which showed no problems.
Any suggestions?
My next move would be to reflash the firmware. What firmware are you running right now?
Do yo have alot of apps, pictures or videos on your phone ? I ask this because, my youngest teen daughter had so many pictures, " 2040" 7 pages full of mostly useless apps more than 8 videos " was ticked by then and stopped counting " , it took over 5 minutes to boot up "media scan" lagged so bad just trying to unlock the screen and when you tried to answer the phone it would completely lockup and the call would fail. So I put an external sd in and moved all the crap over to it and now no more lag, phone works as it should when it's answered.
Just something to look at .
