[Q] Help with probable S5 Mini clone - Galaxy S5 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got my hands - ( don't ask how ) - on what appears to be a fake S5 Mini. Everything about it says Samsung, however neither Kies nor Odin detect the phone and the specs are all wrong anyway. Attached are screenshots from Device Info and CPU-Z.
The phone actually works OK, though it's not nearly as good as a real S5 Mini. But there are several glitches in the system: some apps or options just don't work, multi-language support is deficient, etc.
Nothing surprising from a clone.
Question: is there a ROM I can try to load to that device to see if I can make it work better? I was reading up on MoKee (because of the serrano3g identifier in the model name displayed by CPU-Z), would one of those ROMs work? The phone/wifi/BT portions all work correctly, so I guess there's no need to flash a new radio. Then again, I haven't flashed an Android device in a couple years, I'm basically like a newbie at that stuff, so if anyone can provide me with information on what/how to flash, I'd be grateful.
Thanks!

neat
Any pictures of the phone itself?
SOC seems to be a MediaTek MT6572 if correct see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2687487

@protogenxl: Visually, it's an exact replica of a Samsung S5 Mini, with the brandname and all. So if you check out the Samsung site, you'll find plenty of pictures there!
As for the thread you mentioned, I had already read it but I'm still not sure whether that particular ROM can be installed on my device, even though it's a MT6572 ROM. And keep in mind that I am a newbie on flashing devices, so I'm not even sure where to start, what tools to use and what I should be looking for.
Thanks for the suggestion, though!

s5
I have a S5 Mini G8800-F, so the most interesting part would be the layout of the inside of the battery compartment, is the dead space for a second sim there etc....
I would say first order of business is getting a custom recovery installed and getting full backups of original OS in a safe place, after that should be relatively hard to completely brick it as I seriously doubt the clone company put any effort in to boot security

@protogenxl: I'll try and upload a picture of the battery compartment later today. Don't recall seeing a second SIM slot in there, though.
And I agree with you that the clone company didn't put any effort on securing the device. It was rooted when I got it, it's got one of those chinese bootloader menus (I found a video on Youtube explaining what each option means).
As for the custom recovery, should I just pick any of them or are there any recommendations specific to this chipset (or do I even have to care about the chipset at that stage)?

@protogenxl it has been to long since I messed with sisters then boyfriend's phone to get it usable but if memory serves I got a custom made version of CWM from the ChinaPhoneArenea forum.

@protogenxl: here's a youtube video I found which describes the exact device I have: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_-OoKhkD_0
It shows it with its back cover open around the 2:30 mark.

[Q] CyanogenMod 7 ROM for Samsung Captivate

I ran into this article yesterday, How to Flash CyanogenMod 7 ROM Samsung Captivate AT&T, and felt it was about time to learn about this. Plenty of you have already ROOTED your phones, and know from experience, what to do. But, I don't. Right now, I'm stuck with the options of accepting things don't work right, because of AT'T's unwillingness, or inabilility, to correct the issues I have, or reinsiall new, and lose all I've put on, or send back to Samsung for repair, and have them lose all I have on it, or try Rooting and adding a ROM, that may solve my issues. But to do that, I need a little help in understanding it.
First, if I try and run a program, like CyanogenMod 7, and it doesn't work correctly, snd screws up my phone, is there a way I can reinstall Android, and start over, or is that the proverbial kiss of death for my Captivate, and I'm stuck with it like that?
Second, is this the right ROM to try? AT&T can't fix my BLOCKS, of UNKNOWN APPS. The Settings change is easy, you click on activating Unknown, in Application settings..., unless you have no UNKNOWN, to choose. Also, in MMS settings, AT&T shows in a tutorial, that you have the option, of activating Delivery Report and Read Report. It shows this as plain as day, on that tutorial for the Captivate, yet mine, has NEITHER OF THOSE OPTIONS. Also, to TURN ON EDGE, the setting is missing, so I can't activate EDGE, which I guess is no big thing, since the towers AT&T has for us to connect with, THAT ARE 2G, are in such poor condition, no one can connect to them. Thank you, WIFI, for helping me get, ONLINE. Will this, or other ROM's, solve this for me?
If there are any suggestions of how to do this, and what to use, I'd appreciate hearing it from you. Again, I thank any effort, to help me.
1.cm 7 would not be the best rom to flash for your first time.
2. All roms are android, you are running at&t/samsung version of an android rom...
3. Yes you can get back to your stock rom if you don't like/something goes wrong (other than a bad bootloader flash)
4.all custom roms have all the blocking done by at&t removed so switching to 2g(edge) is possible and also faster 3g speeds known as hspa. And unknown sources is in the settings so you can install apps from outside the market.
5.the threads at the top of every section with a little thumb tacks are called stickies, give those a read through.
Like he said above. If you want the pretty much stock experience that your used to but want it fixed then I would suggest starting off with Cognition 4.4 or whatever it is now.
Sent from My KickAss Captivated CM7 OC'd 1.55Ghz/Undervolted
From newbie to a newbie, I took the advice of others and read threads for atleast a month before I flashed my first rom. My choice was Andromeda3, It has a written tutorial and a video on how to from start to finish. From what tools or apps you will need and how to use them , I watched that atleast 6 times and also while I was flashing the kernel and the rom. It may have been overkill but my flash was perfect and I'm real happy with my phone now. You may not go with the same rom I did but do your self a favor and do what I did to prepare for your first flash.

[Q] Camera problem, what do you think

hey guys im new on this wp8 forum (old android user) i bought an ativ S from a dude i met once... i knew this had a problem with the camera, i just realized that the back camera is the only one with the problem, ive been reading posts and i tried everything to make it work, but i allways got the same, it doesnt start correctly, i press the camera button or use the camera icon, but its allways the same, the 1st start its like it close so quickly at the 2nd try it keep the screen black, i only see the icons, and an arrow to swipe and see the pics i toke (with the front camera and a 3rd party app) but it close in around 10 seconds... idk what to do... i tought maybe was something about and update (a past one) but few days ago i got an update (not grd2, a minor one) but nothing... i still have the problem... what do you guys think... its a hardware problem or maybe software?... ireally love this cellphone and i dont wanna stop using it
If third-party apps can use the main (rear) camera, then it's not a hardware problem; you could try hard-resetting the phone and seeing if that helps.
If even third-party apps can't use the rear camera, it's either a hardware or firmware problem. Since this is the first I've heard of you particular issue, and since an update didn't fix it, that suggests a hardware problem (it *could* be firmware if you have some weird non-stock firmware on there; what version info do you have in settings->about->more info?). If it's a hardware problem, replacing the phone (or just living with the meh but usable front-facing camera, I guess) is your only real option.

thank you for your answer, =)
uhmmm, as you say i only can use the back camera with an 3rd party app, because when i try to open the pre installed camera app it close...and the camera icons appera in a gray color... except the arrow to see the taken pics, that appear in white...
i discovered some other ppl who had the same problem, :/
oh oh ok. my telephone info is...
Os version: 8.0.10327.77
firmware:2212.13.6.1
hadware: 15.3.1.0
trans soft: 2212.13.6.1
trans hardw: 0.0.0.0
(i actually dont know how to translate this from spanish): 13.04.19.21
SOC chip version: 1.5.32
this is the info i got, before uodating it, the number were almost the same :/
mmmm i remeber when the update was almost ending it was like 1/5 complete... then 2/5 complete... and after that the phone started...what i mean is that there was no 3/5 4/5 or 5/5 steps...
man so you are telling me i wouldnt be abble to replace just the camera, if is a hardware problem??? oh jesus =( i really love this cellphone i dont wanna lose it =(
thank you for your answer my friend =)
First of all: you have GDR2 and the most current firmware that I know of for the SGH-T899M. The line you couldn't translate is "bootloader" (the code that starts, or "boot-straps", the operating system). Your version numbers are identical to mine.
My rear camera works fine, though. Since third-party apps also work, you either have bad firmware somehow (doubtful, especially after the update) or there's something wrong with the Camera app on the phone (more likely). Unfortunately, the only way I know of to fix the latter problem is to re-install the OS (which a hard reset will, or at least should, do).
Replacing just one component, like the camera, is very difficult on a compact device like a modern smartphone. It might be possible, but the cost might not be worth it. On the other hand, if the phone is still under warranty, you should be able to replace for free.

GDR2??? are you sure my friend?? ive reading and that update come with the Radio app, some camera features and other... but nothing :/ i just got some options in settings and that was all, i even cant download or instal Ativ beam (i dont find it on the store, and when i try to do a manual install it say that is not compatible) and i heard that app is only for the last update
my cellphone is canadian i think, because the company is ROGERS, and i live in peru, so i cant use the warranty or something
i will try to save some of my info, and i will do another hard reset
Do you think there would be a tool for a diagnosis?? i mean conecting my cellphone to a PC in DOWNLOAD MODE or something???
i swear i wont rest till i fix it :'(
again, thank you very much for your time.
P.D: let me show you what the camera looks like for a while
Yes, build 10327.77 is GDR2. Your phone is a SGH-T899M, same as mine; GDR2, along with an interim update ("Amber" maybe?) and a Samsung firmware update, was pushed out to all Canadian SGH-T899M handsets (including those operating in other countries, like yours and mine) a couple days ago.
ATIV Beam installs fine for me; it's probably a region lock and not a matter of device compatibility.
Samsung is reported to have cheapened out on the radio chips for the SGH-T899M, and not included the one needed for FM.
Data Sense (assuming your carrier offers it) is supposedly included, but due to <REDACTED>-up update process, you have to hard-reset to use it (how the *HELL* did that make it through testing? That's supposed to be exactly the sort of BS that those months-long and tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars of testing per-update are supposed to find! Bloody incompetents...)
There's an app called Diagnosis embedded in your phone's firmware; you can install and launch it by typing either ##634# or ##3424# (MFG or DIAG) into the phone's dialer. Check the relevant thread here about dialer codes and diagnosis apps for some examples of things you can do with it (among other things, test the cameras). However, if the camera is working in third-party apps, I doubt that test will find anything. As I said, that indicates a software problem. Hard reset is the only really likely fix for that, if you can't get Samsung to service it. Flashing a stock ROM would probably work too, but I don't know that we have either the ROM nor the flashing tool needed for doing that.

incompetents!!! hell yeah!!! !
my friend are you some kind of wizard or something??, while you were writting it, i was doing a hard reset, and now i have data sense... and oh thats why i cant have ativ beam (NFS in WP devices suxs ass hell, i cant send anything) and... Doesnt have a FM radio???!!! SAMSUNG are you serious?!?!?!?...
i did the ##364# and i got the diagnosis item, thats how i noticed that the front cam worked fine and the "megacam" (front one) doesnt work... (i used the *#0*# code) plus the camera LED doesnt work either
oh well , after the hard reset i just got all my data lost n_n; , but you know... the frontcamera still doesnt work... tell me truth im already FU*beeeep*d ,am i?
i really want to believe that this have a solution...at least a non invasive solution...
I actually have the same issue. Before installing the updates from MS and Samsung the camera worked perfectly. When I updated my phone and did the hard reset, the camera behaves like you say, either a black screen or back to home screen. I called Samsung and they say it is most likely that the update did not install correctly. Though they talk rubbish sometimes as they also told me to update through zune........that doesn't even support WP8..
So flashing a stock rom "might" fix the issue. :fingers-crossed:

[Q] Download booster, car mode, galaxy s5 settings in dynamic Kat 3.2?

So I am wanting to add in the stated features on dynamic Kat 3.2 I consider myself as intermediate when it comes to development while I might be new to the site so feel free to use tech terms I've never changed the settings in a rom though never wanted to until I used the s5 rom which lacked stability for me. The question is how to get those settings in dynamic Kat with s5 theme
Ok i played around with it last night and switched all the apps from the s5 port over to the s5theme but after flashing it i now get stuck at the samsung boot animation i also tried just the settings at first but ended up with the same result and thats where im stuck at for now
I will say be very careful and double check all the versions when you tar a new rom. I flashed one wrong boot img and I had to send my note to mobile tech videos for jtag repair. Apparently i borked it so bad that the jtag would not fix it and they had to replace my emmc chip. I considered myself an intermediate after flashing a few htc phones, but the way At&t has this locked down makes it very very hard to get right. Just a word of caution, hope it all gets back to normal!
So far it's all been good I softbricked it once but was able to recover, I can't get them to fully boot I would try to port a rom from T-Mobile but I don't know enough about safestrap(first phone I've had that ever used this) and kernels so for now I'm just waiting for someone else to offer some insight or a stable port which I'm sure will happen eventually

Gear 2 ROM / Firmware question.

Hi.
I hope this is the right forum for this. I've done a fair bit of reading / searching and can't find any definitive answers.
I've got an S4 that I've flashed CM 12.1 (5.1.1) onto. Everything is great, except that I didn't realize at the time that my gear 2 doesn't like the non samsung os. I tried the various ways to get gear manager to work on non samsung devices (which mine basically is right now), and none of them worked. GM either wouldn't run, or would keep crashing, even after it was supposed to stop crashing.
I figured I'd just reflash the watch with a ROM that was more friendly to non samsung phones. I found http://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-2/development/rom-tizenmod-3-0-skin1980-t2850351 which says it bypasses samsung protection. It also says to upgrade to NE5 firmware first.
I checked my firmware, and I'm running R380XXU0BOA2, or simply OA2. I can't really find a list that states whether this is older or newer than the required NE5. If it's older, I assume I can simply upgrade to NE5? If it's newer, do I have to downgrade to NE5 first?
Any other suggestions for getting the Gear 2 connected to CM12.1 would be appreciated. I don't use a lot of the watches functionality, just basic email / text notification / reading. Don't use the camera, speaker phone, etc.
Thanks in advance.

Help with Pumpkin RQ0248 car radio (MTCB-KLD6-v2.85) Android upgrade

Hi all, I'm certain this info can be found in tons of places on this forum, but I'm brand-new (first post, woo!) and that amount of info here is a little overwhelming.
So, first thing's first: Pumpkin's forum is crap, the one moderator there either doesn't allow posts about android upgrades or flatly denies it isn't possible (I know they're lying).
I have a Pumpkin RQ0248, using an RK3188 cpu and still running Android 4.4.4. I've learned here that it's also known as "MTCB-KLD6-v2.85". It seems like my car radio CAN be upgraded to Android 5.1 (which is awesome), but I'd just like to check some facts with the experienced folks here:
- I download an "Update.img" file to a... microSD card? USB? (Does it even matter? Pumpkin's site says microSD in the maps slot).
- I run the System update button (or whatever it's called) and select the above image file. Let it do it's thing. It'll reboot, at which point I do a factory setting reset? I believe so.
- The file I've downloaded is "KLD_LP_rk3188_p_2016_05_11", I think it's the right one, but I want to be certain. Perhaps there's an even newer one?
- While poking around (and getting confused) I saw some people claim their radio app sometimes would stop working? Is that a regular thing? I know how to enter the "factory" settings (using PW 126) and saw that some people just had to change their radio chip version? Is that trial and error or is there a specific one I should use for mine?
Thanks for all the help in advance! And sorry for the newbie questions!
Anyone? Please lend a hand... I'm very nervous about flashing (and possibly bricking) my car radio...

You need to take pictures of the pages in factory settings for later use. e.g radio and other settings.
What you have given so far concerning MCU it should be possible to upgrade. Don't touch MCU, only
ROM needs to be upgraded.
Also be sure you can get in to recovery. Important is also the screen size 800 or 1024. You have to pick the right one. If you don't
know go to play store and install an app that tells your screen size. It doesn't matter in which SD-slot you're upgrading from.
Normally we use the GPS-slot (left one).

ROM? I thought MCU was the important part that needed to be "flashed".
Can't post links to photos... not enough posts yet... Just tell me other info is required beyond what I posted originally?
I know my screen size is 480x800. Recovery mode, I don't know right now how to get enter it, but I know it exists (button combination held when booting).
Was the file I mentioned in my first post not the correct one to use?
The "official" response from the Pumpkin trash "tech" is that there is no real upgrade for my unit, but he provided a link for me to try it (aka removing any responsibility for bricking the radio). So full of crap, I've already seen RQ0248's being sold online with Android 5.1
If you haven't figured this out yet...here you go. I believe you and I have exactly the same unit. I actually read your thread with Jammy and his responses. HAHA. He isn't much help. I actually flashed what he provided to you and it booted, but the resolution was all off. I think that was for a 800X480 unit.
Pretty simple:
Download the latest V2.97 MCU image file for KLD6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3246386
and download the latest Malaysk Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69366390&postcount=860
I just put them both onto a USB flash drive, booted into recovery, and flashed them. After flashing I wiped data again and flashed them again, and wiped data one more time. First boot can take some time, but it's working flawlessly now.

Yeah, don't get me started with that forum over there... I shiver in disdain with my entire experience there.
TBH, Im like 99% certain my radio is 800x480 (we ARE talking about the RQ0248 right?). I'm still running the v2.91 MCU with the stock image "that person" gave me. And at very least, most of my issues with the radio have improved since doing so: My FM radio reception seems a little clearer, and the Bluetooth audio quality (streaming from spotify on my phone) is also quite a bit better.
That being said, everything about the 5.1.1 OS i'm running is HIDEOUS. The home screen and radio app particularly are just so ugly, aesthetically-speaking. I wasn't about to push my luck on the other forum though: it was hard enough to get an official response to fix my software bugs in the first place.
So, question time!
1) What does MCU v2.96 offer vs v2.91?
2) What does the Malaysk ROM offer vs the stock 5.1.1?
3) Does the Malaysk offer different skins? Customization?
4) Is there some way to improve the functionality of the built-in radio/music apps? (ex: no ID3 tags from MP3s... I'm pretty sure my MP3 player from 2002 has ID3 tags, this radio does not).
Thanks for answering! I had almost given up hope for this forum, it seems very popular in some areas, but this section seems to have much less in the way of activity.
Looking forward to hearing back!

I'm not sure what the benefit is of the 2.96, but it's newer so it must be better! That was just the latest so that's what I used. THere are a ton of benefits so you should read the thread....but here are a few: Malaysk offers quite a few optimizations, built in root, customization including skinned apps and radios, and MOST importantly in my opinion is the FUSE support...which means the full 16gb of system space are available to use for apps. You won't run out of space again. Yes there are other music apps included in his ROM as well, but I haven't used them much so I can't really speak to their functionality...but I'm sure it's better than the stock app.
But, do the new music apps work with the steering wheel controls?
That pumpkin forum is ridiculous lol yes im after a factory looking stable rom with fuse the origional firmware that came with the 2.85 mcu worked flawlessly but it double booted so i tried custom firmware when he sent me the original firmware again, it wasnt the same it didnt even boot properly with 2.85 i had to update the mcu to 2.91 for the firware to even become useable

Can I get an answer to this? The music app is terrible in terms of supporting things like ID3 tags and the like.
Don't even get me started on the 5.1.1 radio app, never seen something so hideous.
So I really want to know if there are alternative apps out there, or at very least better skins, for the garbage apps that Pumpkin dishes out.
Side Note: How good is the android auto integration in these head units? I've never tried it myself.... But Android auto is quite pretty to look at, and I really wouldn't mind tethering my phone via USB cable to my car radio if it meant a better overall experience. That being said though, things like the steering wheel control absolutely MUST function with android auto tether/mirror link/whatever it's called too.
Thanks in advance for anyone that replies! It's unfortunate that so few people do reply here, and this forum has been far more helpful than any other I've used so far.

Pumpkin is a seller only, there is no such thing as a "Pumpkin RQ0248", its a Klyde unit. I m guessing you havent bothered to read the wiki, if you did youd find a load more info and realise that that your unit is the same as any other Klyde unit no matter what it looks like on the outside or who you buy it from (Eonon, Pumpkin, Erisin ) and that its also so similar to any other MTCB or MTCC head unit made by the 10 odd manufacturers who produce these units, that it can use the same software as all of them.
I m also guessing that you dont read or look in the main threads in the 4 MTCB/C forums either, cos youd know all about the custom ROMs and modified apps that are available.
I m guessing neither did the OP or he wouldnt have opened the thread in the first place, we cant have a thread open for every made up model number by every seller of all 10 manufacturers, there would be literally 1000s of thread all with the same content. All the info for this unit is the same for any other MTCB/C unit.

Edit: Yay! This forum had an ignore button! Just learned that today too.

Oh look everyone! I've found the @#$%.
Kind replies are far more helpful than sarcastic, snide, rude and jerk replies. Instead of replying next time, I'd prefer you not reply at all.
There are actual helpful people here that could explain these to me nicely, and have been doing so thus far. These forums are MASSIVE - I don't have the time to read for hours and possibly put myself on the Wrong track if I happen to miss some important details. Also, unless I somehow was able to magically learn what a Klyde radio is on my own, I had never heard of that detail before. Maybe a nice person could've explained it to me.
But kind isn't you. So please go away and allow the nice people to speak.

I didnt write anything that was unkind, snide, sarcastic rude or jerk, I simply gave you some information about where to look to avail yourself of some basic info about your headunit, I didnt have to, I wasnt paid for it, yet I did, in my book, thats "kind". What you require, it seems is someone to spend their time re-typing out whats already been written in other threads into this thread, because you cant be bothered to either look for it/read it yourself (known on xda as "spoon feeding").
It seems that you also havent bothered to read the post I just made properly either, because if you had, you would have seen me refer to "the wiki" (also linked to in the sticky in the very first post of this forum AND in my signature !) and would realise that you dont need any "magic" to learn what a "Klyde" is, you just need to read something mentioned TWICE on the screen in front of you !
In your previous post you also complained that "so few people reply here", if you read what I wrote in my reply, you ll realise why that is - theyve all read the basic info and are replying in threads that apply to ALL MTCB/C headunits.
On xda youre supposed to read stuff and find out for yourself and if you cant find the info you need or dont understand something or need help with something then there are loads of people (including me - look at my thanks meter) who will happily help you. But its clear that you havent read a thing, nothing, not one bit, not the sticky in the general section, not the Q&A section's first thread, not the wiki, nothing, diddly squat. So to help you in the way you want, I would have to write whats already been written and I aint doin that - you read at least the basics of it and ask questions if you dont understand something or cant find it.

Sounds like the ROM you were given was more up to date ROM - new features often have to be enabled by updating the MCU too, as that controls a lot of functions. Its also because you now have an MTCC MCU - 2.85 is MTCB, 2.91 is MTCC and older ROMs dont work with older MTCB MCUs.
Yup it is now a mtcc unit ... im actually using kld9 2.98 i think, i found now my new rom is also double booting after an app install , so its certain apps that cause double booting. Just outa interest what rom are you using? (if you have a kylde unit)

I m using booroondook's ROM. When you say double booting do you mean it boots, shuts down then reboots ?
Basically boots up as it should , then after about 5 seconds boot logo appears then boots again doesnt shut/power down , it started after i downloaded an app called virtual dyno mobile, i will try the rom your using
