[Q] How to get NFC working with 4.4.4 or 5.0.2 - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
Been looking for this for quite some time now without success.
Is there anyway to get NFC woeking with 4.4.4 or 5.0.2? (using cyanogen).
I paid extra for the NFC version since i use it for a few things so i don't want to give it up.
The closest i could find was http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241936 but it's a much older version of android.
On a side note getting tired of Samsung phones because of this. Great when new with recent stock roms but as soon as i want to update them i have to start sacrificing things i paid for. Or is the same with all brands?
Thnak You

I think there is no NFC function in cm roms, since they're developed for regular s3mini. My s3mini is a nfc model too. They should develop a rom with NFC ability.
There is no bad choises, only bad results.
SGS III Mini
tenshi_xp's PAC Rom RC-3
KitKat 4.4.4.

Yup
Seems the NFC version was sold in small numbers.
Better go for a nexus next time

Is that any patch that can fix???and...another fix NFC patch for other phone can be work on us ??? I am using NFC model too

Will not work on At&t SGH-i537?

Hello;
I have a rooted and unlocked at&t SGH-I537. MOST of the rom released have will not work on at&t SGH-I537. Is that true? Is there a way around it?
Thanks
The AT&T version of the Active currently (still) has a locked bootloader and until that gets cracked/hacked/bypassed in some manner then no, custom ROMs won't really appear at all.
All the ROMs for the Galaxy S4 will not work on the Galaxy S4 Active - they might share a lot in common but they are far from being the same phones.
Just have to be patient and hope a small miracle happens, but considering the already waning interest in the GS4A, it might never happen sadly.
I figured this phone would really take off...but at&t isn't really pushing this phone anymore. All I know is this is the last carrier specific phone I buy.

I thought this was going to be the last phone I buy for a few years, I guess I was wrong.
I have to admit I think the screen is killer on this phone. Way better than the amoled on the s4.

I prefer this screen too
Well this is a bummer, is there any new news on this situation? I kinda figured since it's an att exclusive phone it would have some limitations on the ROM front, but there isn't even one legitimate ROM out there for this awesome device?
-Thank you

There are no ROMs specifically for the I537, however...
Safestrap allows you to install (up to 4, theoretically) most any ROM out there at this point for primarily experimentation since there's only one that appears to be working properly but there's a specific sequence you have to follow to get everything working. You can find all the info you need as well as Safestrap in that thread located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448942
The only ROM that's working as I just mentioned is this one, the AOSP port of the Google Edition for the I9295 (the International GS4A):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2406177
With Safestrap you can "install" a ROM that goes onto the native internal storage of the device, runs from the native internal storage, and now because of Hashcode's update has the full performance expected (all 4 cores recognized and working).
I currently have the stock MF3 ROM (the AT&T junk) install as expected, and then I installed Safestrap (updated to the newest one released on Sunday morning), added it as a recovery method, created a new slot (of the 4 you get) for the AOSP ROM, grabbed the ROM itself, the MF3 kernel modules which get the actual hardware like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functional (of which there are MF1 modules for the MF1 stock ROM available too), then the camera fix zip created/shared by LeJay to get a working camera. No you don't get all the Samsung additional stuff like HDR "Rich mode" shots, or a lot of customization at all but the camera does work for regular pics and video recording.
It runs very well, posts benchmarks well past the standard GS4 (meaning using stock ROMs for it), and the HTC One as well so it's great.
Graviton and S4 active
Just as an FYI I just got the Graviton ROM working on my S4 Active. Pretty much followed the same steps as Broadband. It just took some guess as to which kernel to choose. I also chose the i9505 model. The wifi fix works for this as well. I'm about to try the camera fix and the menu/back key fix
any one know if Samsung is planning to bring KitKat to S4 Active?
@Srolfe657 Did you ever get the camera working with the Graviton ROM? If so how?
It looks like there might be 2 ROMs out there that might work.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-active#romList
I haven't tested them but I'm looking into it... I purchased my Active used and it was already rooted... currently running 4.2.2 and I want 4.4.2 so bad!!!!
Safestrap 3.65 not working
Has anyone gotten safestrap 3.65 to work I installed it seem to go smoothly then power cycle and no splash screen so I cant get into it . Should I be using CWM ? if so what version there isn't one listed for the s4 active.
Thanks for any help

Why it is so quiet here ?

Hi,
is there any reason because it is so quiet in S4 Active Rom section ?
On my old device HTC sensation i could flash five news rom a day, if i want.
ok we have a deoxed stock and one nearly working CM 10.2.
Last days, i saw for 2 hours, a S4 Active Miui thread, it is deleted.
i wish me a AOSP AOKP CM & MIUI Rom for our "better" S4.
And i want to flash @ minimum twice a day but it seems i have to wait.
i hope there would be a big customrom scene in the future for i9295.

Yes there is - its called "SAMSUNG". You may ask why? Basically it comes down to this: Samsung announced the S4 heavily and sold it a few months before announcing the S4A. The result: No one bought the S4A because they own the S4 already. Why should they update? In my case the screen and the additional protection was worth waiting a bit longer but for most other users... Also many of them will be on a two year contract and selling their device to get a new one isn't an option (Not just warranty wise).
To sum it up: Samsung released too many devices in a too short time and the S4A was too late.
Also look at their release sheme: totally locked up in the US, more open - but really late - in most of the european countrys. Not very tempting for devs... I sincerly hope for a few latecomers otherwise I may have to learn to program myself :silly:
So im realy happy that LeJays Rom is running
But since my first SE P800 i was always nervous in Rain and sport actions to frag my Smartphone.
Now i am a bit relaxed if it starts to rain or if i starts to sweat
And i think also i would never buy a normal S4 because i dont like the over-colored and blue Oled displays.
So in my opinion the S4A is the better S4.

This x2. I only bought the S4A because I was in Hawai'i at the release time (S4s are around 1k here and S4As are going for $1200 bucks). I was using a Rugby Smart and decided that I wanted JB (or at least ICS), GB just wasn't cutting it any more. Personally I don't care about ROMs, only root so I'm still happy with my S4A.
Everyone I know here either bought the S4 or iFail 5, and now that both of those have waterproof cases the S4A isn't even a consideration for them. They think it's cool that I don't 'need' a case for the waterproofing, but it's not really a big deal any more. Plus S4s are coming available 2nd hand, the S4As aren't (yet).
Well here's the good news:
Hashcode just posted Safestrap for the GS4A I537 (the US AT&T model specifically) in another thread (you can find it yourself) and it works fine so far in my testing.
So this means - TADA!!! - that we can now play around with our AT&T GS4A's at will without messing up the stock ROM which we can't even replace at this point.

Specific for the I537, there are two current ones:
[AOSP][Port]★I9295★ Official 4.2.2 - S4 Google Edition - Feel the Experience of Nexus
which is the one I'm using at this very moment, just got it installed in slot 1 using Safestrap, and I also flashed the kernel modules that Hashcode packaged and are required to get the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc working - the camera does NOT work on that ROM as of yet, it's a very common problem with custom ROMs and different devices, especially a port like that one, so work is in progress to fix it. As long as you can totally absolutely live without any camera usage at all, everything else seems to be working just fine but realize I just installed it and I'm testing features right now even as I'm finishing this post.
The other ROM available is the CM10.2 Android 4.3 build located here:
[ROM][Unofficial/Experimental][Android 4.3] CyanogenMod 10.2 for SGS4A (int'l)
Now, I've tried to install that one several times since last night but it fails on the build check. I've modified the build.prop file to match what the I537 is and should be detected as but I've had zero success so far. I'm not the best ROM "modder" out there so perhaps someone else with more skill and experience could modify that ROM so it will install on the I537 and we can see how Android 4.3 works on it - I'm fine with some of the hardware potentially not functioning as long as it allows for installing it and firing it up.
So far, so good. The AOSP ROM is working without issues that I've noted. Just ran Antutu 4.0.1 for the hell of it and got 22188 - now again, I just finished installing that ROM, it's been rebooted maybe 3 times in the past 30 minutes, and of course we all know ROMs take time to "settle" on a device so I expect that score may go up a bit after a few days of using this ROM. Yes I miss the camera but I can deal with it presently, and I can always reboot into the stock ROM anytime if absolutely necessary.
Just for the record, my "high score" with Antutu 4.0.1 with this GS4A was 25946 right after I bought it, which placed it above the HTC One by a small amount. That put a big smile on my face, but I've yet to achieve that score again.
This thing is a win-win now...
<oh geez, this is post number 420 for me...>
EDIT: Update - Bluetooth is working fine for me with the AOSP ROM as well, just paired up with my Jawbone JAMBOX in a few seconds, seemed to connect much faster than the stock ROM, actually, and it sounds better as odd as that might sound. Perhaps some improvements in the Bluetooth stack, I have no idea, or I might just be hearing things.

[Q] What about ports from Note2 and Note3?

HI all,
So Samsung has decided that we won't get any more updates, which means no official 4.3 for us, which is a bit disappointing but can't say I was surprised.
However I was thinking, how come no one is porting the Samsung 4.3 firmware from Note2 or Note3 to our original Note? Would this even be possible and is it something that might happen in the near future?
Many thanks for your comments.

Samsung vr headset

So i tried to find a little bit of information but dont see vr any where. Last i remember rooted phones cant work with samsung gear, but what about the virtual reality? On a custom rom? I remember reading some update or kernal worked with vr. Well is any 1 running the latest moar rom and has the vr headset?
Hey @djhulk2
This has been resolved for quite a while (more than a year now). I've been running custom ROMs for years, and am currently running an international ROM on my Sprint variant & have no issues with my Gear S or Gear S2. Regarding Gear VR - you'll need to use a custom kernal if you are or plan on running MOAR. The ones that support Gear VR will usually state it in the title, from what I've seen. Check the forum when you can.

This guy is just lost, he just never gets it! What international ROM are you running and do you get everything fully working on the 920P?
I've been using the GearVR with my rooted + custom rom Note 5. Many people are doing it, as it's the only way you can get a PS3/PS4 (some work native?) controller working wirelessly over Bluetooth with SixAxis.

A few things:
If your main concern is being able to use the Gear VR, you can do that with the stock ROM, no issue. If you want to try your hand at flashing, I would highly suggest that you spend some time reading through the threads for your specific Note5 variant. As it is, I have the Sprint Note5, but since I have been flashing and developing for quite a few years now, I have become comfortable with finding and using ROMs that may not have been specifically built for my device (ie. me using international ROMs on my Sprint device). To answer your question @954wrecker, I was testing the CM13 build at the time I originally posted, but I've since gone back to using MOAR with the MM updates. There were too many issue with that build to keep it going as a daily driver, but I had phone/GPS/BT working, but roaming would cause me to completely lose cell data until I rebooted the device, and GPS was only accurate to about 300yrds (which isn't completely horrible, but still...). I've used other international ROMs, but at the end of the day, most are all the same unless you know how to modify their scripts...
In order for folks to help you out, I'd suggest figuring out what variant you are using. If you actually should be using the international ROMs, then once you find a ROM that suits you, you will then need to find a kernel that supports GearVR. Most Kernels do support it, but you will need to do the leg work and figure out which one will suit your specific daily needs. Since we do not know what variant you are using, nor do we have your phone in our hands, it makes helping you out a little difficult. If you have specific questions, feel free to PM me - head-up: I do not log on here every day, so it might take time for me to respond. But I'll keep an eye out :good::good:
I just got the Samsung gear vr and I'm rooted running Moar v4.0 works no problem

When does the S5 mini become dead as far as OS upgrades or security updates?

I am curious. I assumed lollipop was going to be the last one I would see, since the phone is over 2 years old. I love Android 6.0.2 now. I am curious how long I might expect to keep getting updates on the phone? I cannot find any "end of life" lists for the S5 mini so I am unsure.
Also, what would a worthy successor to the S5 mini be to be more up to date?

Depending on the range of the smartphone, the manufacturers give support of about 2 years, after that they are totally forgotten (except samsung, they forget the mid-range smartphones at 4 months LOL)
To tell you the truth, we s5 mini users, we are very lucky that samsung has remembered us, almost never happens

Thanks. I thought it was weird when I saw an update come up for a whole new OS... I love my S5 mini again, although I am looking for an upgrade to save for that's similar size but better than what I have in the S5 mini. Closest I can figure is A3 2017 but not sure.
For now, till I get more info I will enjoy my renewed S5 mini with, now, epic battery life in comparison.

Doze works very well in the s5 mini, is very good no doubt, personally I recommend using some custom rom, do not have samsung applications and are extremely fast, also have new versions of android (7.1.1 in this case) Of course they are in beta and contain bugs, but they are still very good

Well a while back I tried to get a standard rom that was not from DBT (my handset is german, from ebay and it was cheaper) but it would not boot up. So I had to re-flash stock DBT firmware to get it to work. I remember trying Cyanogen mod on my old S4 mini but the compass did not work and a few other things. I cannot use a rom if basic phone features don't work. But with my experience of trying a different rom on my S5 mini, I bet custom roms would not work. I did get it rooted a couple times though although now I stick with unrooted so more standard apps work.

That is very strange, since the custom rom of this forum work very well for the variants F / M / Y, since they are the same device but dedicated to different markets (M in my case since I am in South America), The problem lies in the H variant, since it assembles a totally different processor and it is difficult to compile some custom rom for that variant, you should try some, I personally recommend this rom, very very good, you still have to polish one or another detail, But can be used daily

Thanks. I have bookmarked it. Although it seems every rom I have seen has issues for some reason. Whether in my experience with Cyanogen where the compass stops working and something else which I care about, or that one and tethering and hotspot etc. I just have been kind of burned from the excitement of my first custom rom failing me on the feature front and seeing big known issues with other custom ones I have seen. Not to mention I would want to avoid having some apps refuse to work like my banking app, google apps or Android Pay etc. But I have bookmarked it though in case because it seems cyanogen mod's site has gone down, which is not a good sign and any way they never supported S5 mini which was depressing. Are there any roms that are feature-perfect with no show stoppers on the S5 mini?

I do not understand exactly what you mean, but if the question is, if custom roms may or may not work in one country or another, as far as I know, they would have to work without any problem, as long as the bootloader is unlocked , A common problem is the loss of line, ie the device can not communicate with the operator, therefore no calls or sms, but that is solved using odin and flashing the baseband (there is also a post In this forum on that)
Firmware has various ones you can get based on the carrier or country or what ever. My phone needs me to download the DBT firmware. I tried choosing one someone recommended which was also a stock genuine rom for my phone but not DBT, it was one that they said was as close to raw Android possible. I flashed it and it would not boot. They gave me reasons and all kinds of complex more indepth things I would have to do all kinds of hacky piecemeal techniques to get the other rom to work. I was not interested, using odin, selecting a file and waiting is nerve racking enough for me without having to go 3 levels more complex than that. So the only thing I could do was flash the DBT version back on the phone and it worked again.
DBT is a very clean firmware in regard to branding so no need to switch to anything else, it has only 3 apps which can be uninstalled without rooting.
As for the updates I believe that Marshmallow is the final official update we're getting, there could be a couple security patch updates though. Like many users I was pleasantly surprised that we're getting 6.0.1 considering that we're talking about a 3 year old midrange Samsung which in smartphone years is a long time.

I highly recommend you factory reset your device. Prior to this Marshmallow update my phone was a constipated donkey. Just slow and sluggish as hell even doing the most basic of things. I got the Marshmallow update and it did feel a lot better. I factory reset and put my crucial apps back on and my phone is perfect again.
I would really like to see video showing how quick it is. Because I believe it will still be slower than Slim6.
And when scrolling is slow I get triggered as f.

I have no idea what Slim6 is. What I do know is I was getting ready to throw my phone in the trash and save up for a new phone, till I got the Marshmallow update. Now my phone feels like a brand spanking new upgrade after the crap experience I have been having. Snappy, responsive, everything is working well. Perfect. Pshhh not to mention idle battery life has vastly improved.
It's custom rom for F variant of S5 mini. Battery was never a problem for me on marshmallow from Samsung though.
