Enable Android Auto UI? - Android Auto General

Hi @ all,
I now own an Pioneer AppRadio 4 (SPH-DA120) and use it along with the "AppRadio Unchained Reloaded" app and my HTC One M7 running Lollipop.
My phone is connected to the head unit via HDMI/MHL and touch input is send to the phone via bluetooth with the help of the "AR Unchained" app.
That combination works, but I am interested in getting the Android Auto UI to show up on my head unit, because I like that clean Home style without its NotificationBar and so on.
Is there any possibility to switch my phone to Auto mode, so it gets rendered on my mobile device and that way send to the head unit via mhl?

Appradioforums.com might be of use. It was back in the days of when I had my appradio 2

I have the Appradio 3 with the same setup.. I think this would be a really simple MOD, and should be possible.

You must download this fresh android auto app and plug in phone to radio via usb

2016 VW Golf Android Auto won't work with LG G4

Hi, I just recently got a new Golf with the app connect system that has Android Auto functionality built in. However, I just can't get it to work with my G4. I've downloaded the Android Auto app, I've tried using different cables but every time I plug it in the AA app seems to just crash. It also won't connect manually when I try to connect it in the car. I live in Australia. Is there anything else I can do/download to make this work? Thanks.
Don't know if this will help, but try to set the Android Auto on a headunit. Mine was set to Mirrorlink by default.
Maybe in the settings you should define it to choose Android Auto instead ?
Make sure the phone is unlocked when its plugged in. Also, try plugging in the phone before you turn on the car. My Nexus 5 is able to connect 90% of time on my 2016 GTI.
I just picked up my GTI last night. The salesman couldn't get Android Auto to connect to my AT&T G4. Android Auto was set as the preferred connection. I've tried connecting with my phone locked, unlocked, plugged in before/after the car is on, plugged in after/before the phone is unlocked, USB debugging on and off, MTP, charging only, PTP.

I work at a vw/Skoda dealership. I am tech savvy. I have tried I phones and various Androids with Mirrorlink/Android Auto and to be honest the results are pretty Mixed. I phones mostly pair OK but with so many iterations of Android topped with manufactures bloatware its impossible. I have failed to pair phones that are compatible and tried every app every cable and every configuration even the Manufacturers are clueless. Some models I managed to pair took me 40 or 50 attemps. Android Auto is in its infancy and stability will take time. I managed an S5 with ease and S6 with great difficulty a HTC one A9 which is very unstable. A HTC one M8, but didn't manage the Huawei P8 yet but I'm working on it. I failed with a galaxy S4 and succeeded with another one. I have an LG G4 on the way so that will be interesting. I have had 100% success pairing I iPhones but customers tell us the connection drops out. However I do think Android Auto offers more in terms of functionality if you can live with the fact that you may not ever get it working.
Anything new with G4
Did you manage to make the LG G4 working?
Hello
I had the same problem with my VW Passat GTE 2016 + LG G4. Solved it by going into the settings in the car (under App Connect) and chose Android Auto as default instead of MirrorLink which was the default before.
(although it doesn't work very well anyway, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't)
I have Android Auto 1.6.2400

Just to confuse the issue even more, my vw connects to android auto pretty much perfectly every time & yet I only discovered by accident that the default setting on the head unit was set to mirror link so maybe that's not the cause for you after all. It's pretty basic software so far it seems.

I picked up my new Golf today, but it doesn't have the App Connect. My phone is an Oneplus One with MM Cos 13, do you think Android Auto can work with it?
Just my experience : I own a 2016 Jetta with App Connect and a Nexus 4. I had similar issues with AA connections first. The phone was running Android L 5.1..1. 2 weeks ago I went ahead and installed CM13 and now AA works way better : I never had a connection failure since... Really a plug and forget experience now. So I think Android M is better for Android Auto. Moreover I read that latest AA update includes fixes for connection stability.

[Android 7.0+] AppRadio Unchained Rootless

AppRadio Unchained Rootless allows full mirroring of your phone from your AppRadio. This means that any app can be controlled from the head unit screen and not just a few that are specially adapted.
AppRadio Unchained Rootless is available from the Play store here: AppRadio Unchained Rootless
The user's manual is available here: User's manual
For this app to work Android 7 or higher is required. As Android 7 only allows to inject complete gestures, a gesture has to be completed first on the head unit before it will be dispatched to the phone. It works similar to record and playback. Suppose you need to do a long press of 2 seconds, first press for 2 seconds, once you lift your finger it will be dispatched and replicated on the phone where it will take 2 seconds as well. It's recommended to only do things that take a short time so there won't be too much delay.
Important
The 'Smartphone setup' on the head unit needs to be set correctly for Android as by default it's configured for Iphone. Go to Settings->System->Input/Output Settings->SmartphoneSetup and set Device to 'Others' and Connection to 'HDMI'. See this video: Smartphone setup
Any other AppRadio related app needs to be uninstalled as this blocks the connection to AppRadio Unchained Rootless.
AppRadio mode requires that your device is connected to the HDMI input of the head unit. Depending on the device this can be done with a MHL / Slimport / Miracast / Chromecast adapter. This app supports automatic connection to wireless screencasting devices. Since Google API doesn't support this directly it is done via the phone's GUI. Note that only the phone's built-in screencasting capabilities can be used.
Because this app may not work for your setup there's an extended trial period of 48 hours. In order to claim this simply request a refund within 48 hours after purchase by emailing the order number to the support email address.
Supported head units: any AppRadio that supports Android AppMode via HDMI.
For example: SPH-DA100, SPH-DA110, SPH-DA210, SPH-DA120, AVH-X8500BHS, AVH-4000NEX, AVH-4100NEX, AVH-4200NEX, AVIC-X850BT, AVIC-X950BH, AVIC-Z150BH, AVIC-6000NEX, AVIC-6100NEX, AVIC-6200NEX, AVIC-7000NEX, AVIC-7100NEX, AVIC-7200NEX, AVIC-8000NEX, AVIC-8100NEX, AVIC-8200NEX
Units that have AppRadio mode via USB (a.k.a. AppRadio One) are not supported.
Android 7 Bluetooth bug
If during connection 'Accept thread error' is displayed this is not because of a bug in the app but due to a bug in Android 7.
It can be fixed by disabling BT background scanning: Go to Settings -> Location, in top right menu click Scanning -> Bluetooth Scanning.
The following features are supported:
- Multitouch
- AppRadio buttons
- GPS data transfer via mock locations (only works with head units that have a GPS receiver)
- Wake lock
- Rotation locker (to put any app in landscape mode)
- Real calibration
- Start on HDMI detection (for use with phones and HDMI adapters)
- Notifications to indicate connection state
- Diagnostics
- Automatic Bluetooth toggle for improved connection
Beta test version
The beta test version has the latest features but can also contain bugs.
You need to become a tester of the AppRadio Unchained Rootless app to be able to get it.
Please apply here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/mars.area51.arunchainednr
Beta test release notes
0.09

Does this version also requires the phone rooted. I'm on a mate 9 pro with Android 7?

The S8 was confirmed working, the AVH-8500BHS is supported. Only thing I am not sure about is the Samsung wireless dongle but if it doesn't work a recent Miracast like the Actiontec Screenbeam mini 2 or the Microsoft wireless adapter V2 should do the trick.
For the S8 there's also a wired option. Somebody is using this and it says works well:

It can charge the phone.
Just got it up and running on mate 9 pro. Works perfectly with Microsoft wireless adapter the only problem is the size of the screen. It doesn't show the screen I landscape as it should only partially. Any thoughts on this or is it a new launcher I need for my phone? If that's the case which one should I get?

Do I need any additional hardware for this to work?
Also is this app compatible with AVH-X2650 BT?

The video is via the HDMI input of the head unit and touch goes back via Bluetooth. The S7 doesn't support MHL so a wired connection isn't possible. What works is to cast the screen via a Miracast adapter like the Screenbeam Mini 2 or the Microsoft wireless adapter V2.
I am using my S8+ with rockscout and it is working pretty good. It is a little lagged and the screen is in portrait mode as opposed to landscape. What more will this app do. I am willing to buy it but I just want to know what make this better. I am just using a USB-c cable plugged into the back of the Appradio 4 so that might be a limitation at the moment.

I just loaded Appradio Unchained Rootless on my Verizon S8. I'm using the free Nova launcher. I have a Pioneer 4100 NEX, using the cables and HDMI converter that was recommended in another appradio thread (Towabo USB3.1 Type-C to HDMI adapter). The firmware in the Pioneer was just updated to 1.09. The 4100 is installed in a 2012 jeep JK using a PAC canbus adapter and a micro bypass.
Now appradio seems to work, set the input to other-HDMI and then expanded the screen to fit. I can control the phone from the radio BUT everytime I change to appradio, I lose sound from whatever I was using, be it Sirius, HD radio or the SD card. I have a friend that has the same setup but he's on a Dodge RAM and not on a canbus link. He had audio and can then bring up appradio and keeps his selected audio playing.
From the radio end, we are the same firmware, same HDMI adapter, same cables and feeding the adapter from a 2A+ dedicated USB-C cable. The only difference is he has the paid version of Nova Launcher and I have the free version.
I figure it's something I missed. Anyone have any suggestions?
Ok I have the S8+ Now with chromecast - problems

Dongle to run Android Auto on Android Headunit (T3 K2001n)

Hey guys!
I brought this China Android Headunit running on T3 K2001n cpu and 2gb of Ram on Android 7.1. The brand is "Roadmark". I tried connecting my oneplus 6T to run Android Auto using USB but everytime it runs the easyconnect mirroring app. So I decided buy the Android Auto dongle (white/black) any feedback on which one to buy? And also is there any possibility to root my system? Please help!
Hi, I suggest to buy the white one as the black ones don't always have android auto only carplay while the white ones have both. I would suggest to go to AliExpress and look for carlinke or carlinkit brand. I have the white one and works perfectly both with AA and Carplay. It's worth to buy as it changes the whole experience of the headunit

Have you tried using Headunit Reloaded? It is an emulator for Android Auto for headunits.
Downloading the Android Auto app on the head unit won't work, as it is just the server (equivalent to the phone) but you need the client (equivalent to a head unit).
You shouldn't need any additional hardware.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I have the full version of the Android Reloaded redeveloped by Emil, I ran Android Auto in developer mode according to the instructions given, the USB direct mode doesn't work at all only the WiFi direct works but again it's very laggy and choppy the audio breaks so much. So that's why end up buying the Carlinkit for $30.
If you download headunit reloaded from play store after you have bought it and install it and then you download the XDA labs app from forum.xda and then you go to and look for headunit reloaded then there will be a betab available. Download the beta and the WiFi connection with headunit reloaded will work pretty good. Only downside if you are using Spotify when changing track from your steering wheel it will always skip a track and go always to the second one. But only with Spotify

Android auto and Samsung

hi, my Samsung s20 ultra was working until a few days ago but through mirror link, im trying to connect through android auto but I keep getting a message on my car computer screen saying to connect a compatible USB device, I know AA is built into my fone, It mostly for navigation I need it thanks
Your car needs to be able to handle Android Auto. You say you used Mirrorlink. This is a different system. Check if your car is compatible with Android Auto. My guess is, it is not.

installing android auto on an lte tablet.

Found a lot of info on this for rooted devices. but not to much for non rooted devices
i want to install AA on a LTE tablet that will stay in my car. the tablet will run other car related apps.
but im tired of having my phone tied up playing music draining my battery. specially on long trip.
also i cant record videos or talk on the phone and still have music lol i know things i shouldnt be doing anyway..
is there anyway to make it work. i tried to sideload it. but got an error 22 that android auto needed to be installed on my os.
any help would be appreciated
maybe try AA emulator on this tablet?
Android Auto app is not targeted to tablets, only phones. And since Android 10, Android Auto is a system app, not a user app. So, if your current Android version is 10 or higher and you sideloaded the Android Auto apk, it will not work. To make it work you'll need to root the tablet and install Android Auto as a system app.
[GSI] Fix 'Communication error 22' on Android Auto
If you've installed a custom ROM that doesn't come with Android Auto pre-installed, you'll get the following error when connecting your phone to your car (the Android Auto app opens correctly, the error is only shown when you connect to the car)...
forum.xda-developers.com
The easiest alternative is to use your tablet as an Android Auto receiver using Hedunit Reloaded Emulator. It's available on the Play Store and is very cheap. It has even a free trial app with a 5 minute limit if you want to test it.
When installed, this apps acts as an Android Auto receiver. This way if you connect your phone to your tablet using an OTG cable (or a USB-C to USB-C cable if both devices have this port) your phone will detect the tablet as an Android Auto compatible headunit and show stuff on it.
You can use this app in Android headunits if they don't have Android auto compatibility, as long as they support USB OTG mode.
