This phone reminded me why I don't buy from carriers - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S6

Seriously, this is a nightmare. AT&T logo in the status bar, HEAPS of bloatware, persistent WiFi connected notification for some reason, and a nice tramp stamp.
If there is one thing I wish Samsung would do like HTC, it is selling straight to me untarnished from their store.
This one is going back.

I agree.
For me it gets worse when they lock the bootloader and make it nearly impossible to escape the bloat. I'll deal with it and disable most of the problems, but I don't understand it.
Honestly what is the point of the Wifi notification.

Seems to make me more likely to turn off Wi-Fi, maybe run up that data bill

There you go. Probably not all of it even.

Oh, it get's even better. Samsung lets each carrier muck around with and make whatever weirdo changes they want.
On the AT&T variant they're toggle-able options, not so on the T-mobile. (I have both at the moment.)

Hot damn, thats terrible and awesome all at the same time. I have a (useless) t-mobile version right now. Not sure if im going to wait the 40 days to unlock or return and grab an AT&T version tomorrow.

Between the two, I think T-mobile is "better."
I can't deal with text in the status bar. At all. Plus, T-mobile tends to be less locked down.
Honestly, I might send them all back. If i could buy one "untampered" from Samsung that would be MUCH better.

Oh I agree entirely. I'd prefer to keep the T-mobile, but sitting on it for 40 days before I could use it on AT&T is ridiculous.
The AT&T version is bloated and locked down and the International version has no direct ETAs. (most sites are saying end of April)
Pretty sweet...

Ugh, what a situation.

I got tired of my old LG G3, so I got an iPhone 6+, so far 10 days in it, I'm not missing my G3 at all, now I do like the S6 and I still have 4 days to decide if I keep the 6+ or change to the S6. With that said, AT&T includes so much crap on the S6, plus the locked bootloader and probably no root for a couple of months.... that I guess the iPhone will stay since 'it just works' and camera is just a tad less than the S6 and plus iOS 8.3 is just butter, it will probably have a jailbreak before the S6 is rooted.
And I already try to live with a locked Touchwiz when I had the S5 and I only lasted 1 month before changing to the M8 ( I really hate stock touchwiz).

Hey REDDIT buddy!!!!! I returned mine and bought a dev edition m9

I was kind of wanting the s6, but this thread makes me feel better about getting the at&t m9. I'm already unlocked running a custom rom and kernel.

Coming from the Nexus 6 and the M8 I sort of forgot how bad it is. So much unnecessary control. They get their damn claws into every dang crevice of this device. Makes me sick. Samsung is a global force and pretty much the face of android. They need to step up and tell carriers to back off. This is one thing I do wish they would steal from Apple.
And that god awful- persistent wifi notification. What in the entire f**k. Was that like an effort to make super sure customers know when their Wifi is on to avoid data charges? At least give people the option to stop it.

Oh, qq more. If you don't know what you are buying then don't buy it. Samsung phones on AT&T have been exactly like this for a long time, the S4 I have has all the same complaints you are referring to here. Don't act like it's new - it's expected.

I agree completely. I've used a Motorola device for too long.

It gets tiresome reading the same complaints about AT&T phones over and over. None of it is new at this point. And if you are returning your phone then go post in the forum for whatever phone you are going to have. This thread is beyond pointless. Once it's rooted existing xposed modules will take care of all the complaints you have, save carrier branding on the hardware.

[Q] Is it worth selling my Nexus?

I was very interested in selling my nexus and before I did I wanted go get my fellow nexus one user's opinion. Why should I keep this phone? I was looking into the evo by sprint. The screen size amazes me. If I was to sell my nexus one how much would I be able to sell it for? What are some good reasons to keeping my nexus one? I love this phone but I have it stuck in my head that there is something better out there. Please convince me not to sell it.

If you want to switch carriers that's one thing. But on GSM carriers there really is no worthy upgrade till the G2, but even then... A stock 4" phone is needed, the Galaxy S is is more of a side-grade IMO.
The dev level upgrades are one thing that would make me keep this phone for at least mid way through the next year. I like the fact that Google will upgrade this phones' software for a while at least and we don't have to wait for hacked roms or carrier OTA's.
Hold onto it until the Dell Thunder! I am.

On Ebay Canada, used Nexus ones (ATT) are going for $500-1100,
Looking to sell mine for $450, is that a good price?
Definately keeping mine forever. It's more than just a phone.

There´s n better phone out there (for me )...just bigger screen phones, probably better screen, better multitouch...but that´s all just too little to convince me!
After my Nexus One, it has to be a step forward, like having 1.5 or 2 Ghz
A few points I'd like to share with you.
First, the Nexus One being what it is is reason enough not to get rid of it. It is a classic, it is the only HTC device available with vanilla Android and high end hardware, and everything else has some flavor of garbage depending on the manufacturer. It really is the modern day Google phone, their baby, and the device that gets all the updates before everything else.
I typically sell my old phones to pay for most of the cost of my new ones, but with the Nexus One, I'm pretty sure I'm going to use it until it dies and still keep it to remember how great it was after that.
As for switching to Sprint for the Evo, I would also wait until something truly worthy of replacing your Nexus One comes along (and on a better network). The added features of the Evo aren't worth the poor battery life and slower general operation when using it.
For my next upgrade, I'm going to wait for something with a higher-than-WVGA resolution screen, xenon flash, and something that can truly live up to the Nexus One's legacy.
^ Agree...Won't be selling my classic N1 for some time! And will never go to Sprint
if i buy a phone which is from att or tmobile will i be able to use it i m dubai (u.a.e)

Came across something strange today.....

Few things I want to get straight, I in no way shape or form tampered with this device. I am an AT&T employee and came across this while setting a customer up with his new S5. This is how it came brand new sealed out of the box. Also, I understand the photo is blurry. This is due to the fact that the screen did not stay up long. I snapped as fast as I could before I had to take it back because it was actually extremely buggy and kept freezing. Just felt the need to to share with the guys. Looks like some are being missed in the lock down lol.

Can you tell what software version its running?
That doesn't mean the bootloader is unlocked. It simply means that the devices scanning utility (SysScope it was called on the S4) detected a change to a file. In the case of the phone you had, it sounds like it was probably do to a faulty board or failing software in a bad unit. The S4s are known to show "custom" for absolutely no reason at all or because of something on the SD card. It usually reverted back to official after a couple of reboots. I'm not trying to be confrontational by asking this, but how can you be an AT&T employee and not know this? Like I said, this question is not a personal attack, but I am wondering if AT&T gives any training on how these devices work in real life and not just on the shelf. Either way, I promise you the bootloader is still locked on that device. The unlocked symbol and custom have nothing at all to do with the bootloader.
Mine shows that also

Me too. Still not exactly sure what it means unless it's the developer options being enabled.
Edit: Just checked and it's not the developer options...and mine doesn't have the unlock icon anymore actually. I think scott14719 is probably right.

I'm right. If you want more information about it you can search the AT&T S4 forum for relevant threads. There really is a lot of information about it that might answer a lot of potential questions.

AT&T provides training that is optional for new devices, but there is an article released with relevant information to sell the phone. They do not train employees to check bootloaders, for root, for knox warranty, etc. None of my coworkers know what a bootloader is or what it means to be locked or unlocked. Edit: No training provided by AT&T mentions root, jailbreak, bootloaders, etc etc.
To be on topic, after I switched to ART, the Custom unlocked pad came up, when I switched back to Dalvik, the Custom unlocked padlock went away.
I am also an AT&T COR store employee and none of my coworkers know about that kinda stuff. Not a lick of training is given on that.

I'll try not to take offense to that....lol. No AT&T does no training for these things. And to be honest with you I am usually pretty knowledgeable when it comes to these things. I have been out of the Samsung scene for a while ( Due to me using my more developer friendly Nexus 5 or my new HTC One M8) so I am now unfamiliar with how these devices handle certain things. I have yet to do anything like change my runtime on the device do to the fact that it only made minor performance changes to my Nexus 5. If I would have I probably would have gotten the same boot screen and then eventually thought nothing of it. Just had a little moment of excitement while on the job lol.

Definitely no offence intended. I just wish AT&T, Bestbuys, etc... would do a better job of training the people that they expect to sell these devices. Most people don't know the everyday quirks of most devices unless they are given an oppertunity to learn about them.

But in the grand scheme of things 100 to thousands isn't that big of a loss. for an example with the s5 I can almost guarantee we are just a small subset of s5 owners the largest portion will never know what root is or have any idea what to do with it. The money they take from the larger portion will cover the expected returns from the 1% who are upset and or mad that they locked the BL.

Your right partially but grand scheme of things = all of their devices that are locked not just s5's. I am just saying that, they are always seeming to pull more customers in with new deals so gaining customers is important to them. So not losing customers should also be important in the same aspect no matter what the percentage is. If they don't care then shame on them.

No they won't. Who are they going to switch to? Tmobile? Tmobile will be locking down their bootloader as soon as they get the chance. Only reason why they haven't already is because they need as many customers as they can get. Same reason they kept downloader booster...even though they can't afford to keep it. Not to mention, the average user doesn't give a crap about bootloaders or download boosters.
I got the custom message after applying ART.

MOTO X SLAPPED

Switching from the S5...

Ok so..
Its been about 12 days since I have had this phone. I thought I could be patient enough with it to maybe wait for a root (if developers are even still working on it.)
Turns out I am not so patient.. I would rather switch to a company like HTC who is kind enough to give tools to their customers who want the option to do what they want with their own ****ing cell phone that they purchased. :highfive:
Anyway..
My question is: Is anyone familiar with the return policy? I am pretty sure that it is 14 days and I can trade it back in hopefully for an M8, but if someone that has experience or knowledge with this can shed some more light I would be very grateful.
Second question would be do you guys think the HTC One M8 is the best option for me right now? Ill be going through at&t and I want to be able to root and flash roms. Preferably some of the more popular ones like AOKP or Pac-Man etc..

what's the point of posting anything here. whats the point of even sharing your thoughts of switching. if you made your decision, just go and do it. why ask us when you can ask AT&T? just leave man
Because I bought it on launch day and I am not sure how many days you get before you can return the phone. A lot of people are switching too or getting the TMO version, so I think a topic like this could become helpful to others as well.
Not sure why you are being rude, if you aren't going to help or say anything worth reading just stop typing. I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings in showing that I think owning a locked down device isn't for me anymore.. it's still a great phone. I just thought I would be more patient or enjoy stock more, but I was wrong.

14 days from purchase to return and a $35 restocking fee are basically the terms.
Personally, I wouldn't switch. I think the S5 is a superior device even without root (for now). but you gotta do what's best for you. Good luck.

Thank you for a real reply and for the information, its really appreciated.
I think the S5 is a superior device too, but I really need root for certain apps. Not to mention flashing roms can be pretty fun.
Also sooo much bloat I just want to remove, not a big deal, but prefer a clean device.
Pretty sure mine will be going back in the next few days as well. I love the camera and the water resistance is great, but for the price, with the ehh battery life I've been getting and some annoying software stuff, it can't do anything that my international Note II can't.
In the future if/when someone can find an exploit and get root, I would definitely give it another shot.

Well the reason for the rush is I can return it for something that already has root and more development. I'd rather get more enjoyment now rather than hope and wait. Although if the return policy stated like 2 months or something, I'd honestly probably still wait those 2 months because I do enjoy this phone.
It's also the principal of the situation too though. I'm not ALL FOR companies that sell overpriced phones that, when bought, are just so locked down that i don't even feel like it's actually fully mine.
I've got a week to decide, I may stop in to have a look at the competition.
I've been seeing a lot of people posting that they aren't getting that great of battery life. I'm getting about 36 hours uptime with about 6 hours screen. Is that better or worse than what you guys are seeing? TIA.

There only seems to be a handful complaining, even on other forums people are getting crazy good battery life. Heck I can have on screen time of 4-5+ hours, tons of email, text, phone calls etc, all sync is on, gps is on etc.... and still have plenty life left at the end of the day, actually as I type this in similar situation I have 22% life left and been off the charger for 33 hours, and even browsing I still have 4 tabs open. First phone where the thought of not having enough battery doesn't even occur to me, going to be nice on trips lol.
Far as the OP, do what you have to do, though I don't know why you'd think root would've been available by now on this phone, this isn't the old days where people could crack same day. I liked the M8 but couldn't put up with the camera and bulkiness plus no water proofing.
I have the M8. If you like flashing and customizing it is a no brainer. I myself am running stock and still enjoy the device.
My wife has a S5. It's pretty and white and shimmers like nail polish. Perfect phone for a beautiful girl.
Also as far as the discussion of superiority of either device. It's an opinionated one. Each excels at their own intended goals.
If the camera of the M8 is scaring you, just ask yourself . " will I be on assignment for national geographic where I will need to take epic photos on the go?"
If you answered no, then this camera should be good enough for your personal use.
It seems like you're just asking for that little push for you to make the trade.
I am giving you that "push". Everything will be okay in HTC land....be free...
Oh yeah. Have fun with the raised speaker grills. The gamble on receiving two variations of the LCD screen and ... Yeah that's about it.
HTC UltimEight ?
It really depends on where you bought the device. Typical return policy would be 14 days. Some vendors do not charge a restocking fees on returns but "I heard" AT&T can charge you. This was forwarded to me from the sales rep. I got my S5 at Target and returned it. I was not charged with a restocking fee by them or At&t that I am aware of.
I got myself the M8 since I wanted root.

I have both, a gunmetal grey m8 and shimmery white tmo s5 sim unlocked for ATT, The m8 is great if you like to mod/customize, you can run Sense, GPE, or AOSP (cm is already being worked on)...The s5 (ATT) obviously is locked down....both phones are very nice it just depends if you need the ability to customize.

Is it just me or is this phone a devepors dud?

So I understand that we have locked bootloader but it seems that these forums are dying. This is the first LG phone ive ever owned but it really feels dead even compared to my Galaxy note 3. It's like nobody is even trying to do anything with it and its made me quite sad. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to make this phone feel fun and different like I remember doing to my Galaxy s2 or s3? I miss the good old days when a new rom came out every week and new exploits came out almost instantly.
Since there is no official unlock method, it's very tough to develop. Even if there was a workaround to unlock, these money hungry CDMA carriers lock us out of fastboot and adb, so it wouldn't be possible either way. I really wish I would've waited for the new Nexus phones or the OnePlus Two.

The one plus 2 isn't for CDMA, but yeah, the nexus phone would have been great.

Wasn't saying it was. I'm saying I wish I would've waited for it. I didn't want a carrier phone to begin with, but the G4 made me want it. Big mistake

I know how you feel. I had mine since release and though I think its an all around great phone root for the most part has done me justice. I just think the general idea of bootloader locking is bull**** and should be illegal. I would love a nexus phone but I will not buy into googles push to cloud storage and their services. I can deal with no removable battery but non expandable memory is a no go. Honestly if/when we get android M on the G3 and we get a custom rom I will go back to it provided the bluetooth issues are ironed out. But thats just my 2 cents

Bootloader unlock, illegal... Really? Please don't be that guy. We bought the phone, we should be able to do what we want to it. That's like buying a car and it being illegal to change your own oil.
You might want to read that again. Where did I state that UN locking it should be illegal. I said the whole boot loader locking thing is bs ie we should not be locked out from it.
I called LG and talk to a tech who told me if I send my phone to them they would unlock my bootloader but it would void my warranty and of course I already knew that but I was just shocked that they said yes instead of telling me no.

Question about the Google Ast button.

I came from a samsung phone where you take the bixby button and make it do other things... is there any apps that can do that for the lg..
No, not until we get a bootloader unlock. Damned superficial feature, if you ask me. Whatever happened to assigning a long-press home button to activate the assistant?

meh.. sucks.. really liked that app for my s9+ that could change all the bixby buttons..
I rather not even have the button lol .. if it cant be changed but oh well.. thx for reply
This is incredibly sad that this (potentially) awesome phone is handcuffed by LG and making it less and less desirable every day ... not just for potentially new buyers, but for those of us who loved the V10 and V20's.
I've stopped that button from activating google assistant as it was only intrusive - but now I've a button that's a dead-button and I hate the "non-functionality" of something that could be quite useful for something else.
Can't wait for an unlocked bootloader! ! ! !

It's sad that LG has been my phone from the V10, V20 (here and Euro), and had a temp V35 till the V40 came out and loved them all ... EXCEPT ... this V40.
Too much wonky crap going on. Apps don't work well on it. SwiftKey, anything Cleeng (they suck as an App developer, even worse on V40), video's from iPhones, notification resets, doesn't fit well on any wireless charging cradle and the list goes on.
Samsung offering $550 plus a set of ear-buds (good ones) to trade in for the Galaxy S10. Sure it's going to be locked up like a bank vault, but that offer includes unlocked versions so I can switch carriers AND it doesn't come with bloatware.
It's a serious consideration for me.

It was a promotion from Samsung in my phone when I was surfing Reddit. I decided to reserve the phone and promotion. Costs me nothing till the phone is released and ready to ship.
I checked on the Samsung website and the offer is there, but you have to dig for it. It wasn't on the first or second page.
Good luck

At least all third-party Apps worked on it and the basic tech of the phone worked when you made a change. For me it's more about the functionality ... I can adapt to the few idiosyncrasies of the Sammy line to get a phone that doesn't have the user "UNFRIENDLY" issues the V40 does. LOLOL
Have a great weekend, I'm out to a Bourbon Tasting.
