[Q] Does the regular backed Turbo handle heat the same way as the ballistic nylon? - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

I have the regular Turbo. I was wondering if the Nylon backed model handled the heating better or worse or the same. Mine gets rather warm, even if it hasn't been a problem yet. If the Nylon handles it better, I was thinking of switching. Anyone have any experience with this?

I have my nylon one in a speck case and haven't noticed anything...
Sent from my Droid Turbo.

Cnet's video review specifically notes that the phone gets very hot ~despite the fabric cover~ so I would imagine it's handling it about the same.

Speaker location

This is by no means a major complaint and not really something that makes me dissatisfied with the phone. I just wanted to see if anyone else has noticed this and felt like pointing it out.
I decided to play some music the other day while I was getting some work done, so I picked what I wanted to listen to and set it down on the table. I immediately noticed that it was slightly muffled, so I turned the volume up a bit. That helped, but the range of sound still had that muffled feel to it. I flipped it over to take a look at it and immediately thought that the location has it covered by any surface it's laying on.
Well, that wasn't completely true. It seems they have a VERY slight taper at the lower corners of the phone so that the speaker opening doesn't sit completely flush against the surface it's resting on. That said, it's still very close and it still generally muffles the sound. If they had made that taper just a little more significant, it would have been a lot better. I've done some very extensive testing rolleyes and it seems to me that just putting a few pages of paper under the very bottom edge of the phone improves the sound quality a bit. It takes a little more to be optimal, but not much to have a decent improvement. I think they could have added a slight bit more of a lip without it messing up the overall comfort/sizing of the phone.
One other thing I'm curious about is the size of the speaker cutout on the back cover. There is a ring of padding on the cover so the cover doesn't sit flush against any of the speaker girll, but the opening is smaller so I'm curious how much that affects the sound. I think this is a much less noticeable thing though.
So yeah... anyone else notice this or have any thoughts?
I find that it has a better sound when I set it on the desk using my kick stand from my case it is like it uses the desk to make the sound more rich.

Lol I just lay my phone flat on it's screen, hopefully on something that won't scratch it XD. But I have noticed that it is muffled, but I don't seem to notice that much, I don't set it down not flat on the screen often for this very reason.
And I would go kickstand if you can get a case like that...since I use an extended battery that's my tradeoff...or else I would so get a kickstand for this thing lol.
Verizon sells the case for the extended battery also the car dock/hdmi dock works with the case and an extended battery. There are inserts in all the accessories that pop out to accommodate the extra thickness. They thought out all the accessories for the bionic pretty good

How nice of Verizon to have thought out strategies which would force us to go out and spend even more money on accessories as opposed to designing their phone so that it could play music resting on it's back... I'm sorry but am I the only one dumbfounded by this obvious design flaw?
I think they learned after the Xoom launch... we had minimal accessories and they were not nearly as good as what we get to buy for the bionic.
They didn't learn from the Xoom's speakers, It also was on the back of the unit so when you are holding it, it constantly projects away from you and others hear it better than you do. I am quite impressed with the speakers on the GTab, they are on the sides and you can hear them sooo much better.

"official" VZ droid silicone case/skin causes battery to heat up

Just a word of warning. I was seeing my battery at 120F whenever I was multitasking, like uploading stuff to dropbox & streaming music, which shouldn't be that intensive, it was making me crazy. Finally popped off the case, no more heat, I never see it over 100F anymore.
I do not know the model or anything, the turd at verizon unboxed it and discarded the box. It's the silicone one with some sort of reinforcement built into it. It cost like 20 dollars, and they won't take it back now without the box. Jerks.
So... just worth mentioning. Wouldn't have them throw in the case, if I were you. I'm off to search for a very thin silicone one, or something like that.
EDIT:

I would avoid that. At least it gave me issues.

Was your phone plugged into your charger while doing these tasks?
I have found that when my phone is fully charged, and I am doing a lot of tasks on the phone while it is plugged in, my phone gets really hot. I think it has to do with the charger doing small charge pulses to keep the battery at maximum capacity. I have the otterbox case which sounds very familiar to yours (inner silicon mold with an outer plastic shell), and when I am using the phone hard, I do not get these problems when disconnected from the power outlet.
I could imagine as a little dyi fix, you could cut slits into the silicon so that you still get most of the reinforcement and protection, but now it has a little bit of breathing room. (like a heatsink, but inefficient).
If you are just going to throw the case away, this is an interesting option.
Did you ever find something thin and silicone? I have the pure gear, my phone gets hot and its way too sticky in my pocket.
I think it'd be really interesting to see if the slits would work.. Is anyone willing to try it and post their results? I have the case too.

I have a hard plastic case that i got off Verizon and it also get's super hot on and off the charger, but the official verizon kickstand case http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/accessory?action=accessoryDetails&accessoryId=50277 doesn't really heat up. The verizon case is way thinner and covers less of the phone, so maybe some holes will help.
My droid 4 gets up to 135°+ when I'm tethering. just don't let it get too high, there's a point where the battery won't charge unless its under a certain temperature

Anyone got one of these? Are they actually hard or that soft rubber?
I have the verizon kickstand case and my phone only hits around 117ish. I dont like going over 120 so i have warnings to let me know when it hits 117. I think the vzw kickstand case helps the temp when the kickstand is being used since it opens 3 large holes in the back.
Hope this helps

I too have the kickstand case. I use my droid for everything, from driving directions in my car using the car mount while listening to slacker radio, to checking emails and facebook while away from my PC. My temperature has hit 130 degrees F. I use a temp monitor to keep an eye on my internal and battery temp. I also point my A/C vent in my car towards my phone to keep it cool during the summer months. Lastly, when using it away from car, as in to tether, i remove my case and slide the keyboard up to keep the most surface area exposed to keep the phone as cool as possible. I use FoxFi to tether my Xbox, PS3, PC, and Asus Transformer 101 all at once.

Best case for loose Droid 3?

I just got a Droid 3, and I'm liking it for the most part. My only issue with it is the slightly loose slider which opens the phone inside my pocket. I gather this is a normal occurrence, but it's still annoying. Anyone know of a hard case that has some sort of slider locking mechanism? I've tried the Verizon original case, but it doesn't really help.
Monoco has an aluminum case that you have to open to use the slider, but let's you access the other functions without opening, search aluminum case for droid 3 on ebay.

I don't know if its what you're looking for, or if you already found something, but my trident case i got on amazon for 20 works wonders, its basically an otterbox. Multiple colors, and although it doesnt have that slider locking mechanism you were looking for, my phone has never opened in my pocket since i bought it back in september.

arm band for running?

Can anyone recommend an arm band for running? My issues are:
I sweat a *lot*. I destroyed a Droid RAZR MAXX on a 20 mile run. (I put my mp3 player and phone in plastic bags (*) and that seems to provide decent protection.
I really would like something that isn't going to chafe my arm on long runs.
I don't really care about using the phone through the band.'s window I have a Moto 360 for that.
If it has room for the phone with a plastic case that's a plus.
Thanks!
(*) I've discovered a perfect use for those bubbles that Amazon uses for packing things. I cut the end off and slip my phone or mp3 player in them to keep them safe on long runs.

This is why I love my Sony smartwatch 3. Built-in GPS and you can transfer on to it. No need to carry my phone with me when I run
You should look into one of those running packs too. I find them more comfortable than an armband.

Potential buyer - questions, and would you recommend the Turbo over others?

It has occurred to me, more and more lately, that my old Droid 4 is...just a touch outdated.
I was thinking of picking up a Moto G4 Plus, but I've been trying to look for alternatives; past flagships and such, for example. One of the more promising ones to come up, since it has bootloader unlocking "available" and appears to meet or blast right past some of the other requirements I have in mind, is the Droid Turbo.
Questions:
su4tl-49 is the latest OTA, and as it has already been cracked, I needn't worry about a seller on eBay having unwittingly updated, correct?
Any cell reception issues over CDMA?
How is the durability? I would probably get a case (something I haven't bothered with since my LG Ally, since the Droid 4 is built like a brick...wow, that'll be different), but being able to use the phone "naked" without worrying about it exploding at the least encouragement would be nice.
Is image retention a serious issue for this screen?
How bad actually is the overheating problem I've read about here and there?
Any not-immediately-apparent crippling design defects to worry about, or common factory defects to look out for when buying used?
And finally, as the title says...would you recommend a Droid Turbo over other phones from this year or last?

I sold a 2015 LG G4 I won in a release contest and bought a 3rd 2014 Quark (the umbrella code name for this device). If this device didn't exist, the LG G4 would be my go-to phone. My wife and I use them as daily phones, but I got a 3rd as backup. New, still in the box. We have the XT1225, the 64GB "international" version. It just has more LTE bands (perfect for AT&T) and no CDMA, but a Quark is a Quark.
I have Ditztronic TPU protective case even though mine has the ballistic nylon + kevlar. Mine is kept pristine for eventual re-sale value. The ballistic nylon versions have kevlar underneath. The kevlar versions just have the kevlar. If you get a case, make sure it fits whatever version you get. On eBay/Amazon, they will usually say "ballistic", "non-ballistic".
IF you can, get the 64GB version of the Droid Turbo XT1254, since it has no microSD card slot. You will appreciate the extra storage. A few weeks ago there was only a $20 difference in the two storage versions, for a used Droid Turbo.
Yes, SUTL-49 can be unlocked with Sunshine. Mentally factor in the $25 with your purchase.
The overheating is not that bad. When making a TWRP backup, clearing caches, then flashing a ROM update, and then rebooting it can get hot during the 15 minutes it takes to optimize my over 200 apps to finish rebooting.... So, I have stuck it in the freezer to cool down during that time. But for normal, daily use I've had no problem.
No, image retention is not an issue on my two 1440p AMOLED displays. We've used them daily. I use Google maps navigation app (Waze) daily.
Thank you for the response, very helpful. It looks like I've narrowed it down to the Turbo, LG 5X and LG G3, leaning towards getting a Turbo because of the more powerful graphics core, better screen and bigger battery. The HTC M8/M9 were also on the shortlist, but I just can't get over how hideously ugly they are : \

I quite like the simple, sleek look of that case. I don't plan on flinging my phone around, but how well would you estimate it protects against drops, in particular corner impacts? A cheap case off eBay was on my shopping list, but I'd pay a few more dollars for something known good.
The Droid 4 running at 1.3ghz (never even mind 1.4ghz) gets about hot enough to cook eggs on during a flashing+optimizing run, so as long as the Turbo doesn't decide to burst into flames, that doesn't sound like anything I'm unused to. I suppose if my usage encourages it to overheat too much, I can always underclock it and it'll still be an order of magnitude faster than my current phone.

I'm a case junkie and have bought several different cases for me and my wife. At least a dozen. For me, I keep using the Ditztronic after I try others.
The volume and power button nubs are soft, flexible so when you hit the power and volume buttons you don't have to exert extra pressure. Some cases are very stiff at those points.
Also has a nice ridgeline around edge so that if your phone lands facedown on the floor or you want to purposely put your phone facedown on a surface, the display/screen does not touch anything. I know other cases have this, but Ditztronic case does it with style.
While I'm not particularly clumsy, since late 2014 I have dropped my phone a few times onto concrete when getting out of my car. This soft case absorbs the abuse. I really don't like the very rigid lockbox "otterbox" stuff. I know some people do, but it's not for me.

Pretty much how I am. My phone isn't worth much, but I tend to be quite careful with it...the falls it has taken are almost all due to either forgetfulness or extenuating circumstances which may or may not involve cats. Fortunately it's built well enough, and the screen bezel extrudes much like those cases, so I've never really needed a case. I can't stand the chunkiness the most useful ones add either, and it seems most everything available for my model these days is either "uselessly thin TPU", "chintzy Chinese plastic" or "tank".
Of course, now that I'm going to spend 6 times what I pay for a replacement used D4, it's best to make sure the few inevitable topples don't have more consequences than a brief moment of panic.
I'm pretty much sold on both the phone and the Diztronic case, but a (probably) final few question on the latter: how's the grip? How does it compare to say, soft-touch plastic? Is the Tudia better in this regard?
One of the primary things I'm upgrading for is the ability to play Go and Ingress without my phone choking under the memory pressure, so it not becoming a bar of soap when damp with hand-sweat (still hot here in Missouri...) is a desirable thing.

Almost all smooth TPU cases will have some grip issues when your hands are wet.
The alternative is to get "hand grenade" textured cases, but those are usually made of stiffer plastic/polymer (whatever) and the buttons are hard to press.
There are also some hybrid 2-part cases, with a hard textured back overlaid with a softer liner which covers the buttons.
But I just want something lighter that will absorb the occasional drop and prevent the glass display from being cracked when landing face down. So, the Ditztronic works for me.

I suppose there's really nothing stopping me from simply getting two and switching cases on the fly; when I play traveling games, I generally make it an outing rather than drop what I'm doing on a whim. According to reviews on the Diztronic it's fairly easy to pop off, so I could just do so, put something armored/grippy on instead, and go.
Or alternatively, do something silly like get an Otterbox or equivalent for a slightly larger phone and just stuff the phone and Diztronic case in together. On a temporary basis, it doesn't have to be the prettiest if it's grippy and as a unit nigh-indestructible :>
(probably not though, the extreme chunkiness would likely drive me to distraction)
So it seems that's it, then. I'll grab a Turbo, the Diztronic to start and...probably a Skinomi skin for the screen since they've served me well; this is a small town in a rural area, gravel dust and glass do not mix. The fine scratches on my D4's screen from a single day of exposure can confirm that, unfortunately...
Thank you for the information. No doubt I'll be asking you about other things in the near future, but I at least have a solid shopping list now. Can't wait to get my hands on a semi-modern phone
