[Q] LTE bands 2/3/4/7/12 in Nexus 6 XT1103 - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there,
I'm using T-Mobile in the US but I sometimes travel to Central America. Does anyone know how I can enable the LTE bands 2/3/4/7/12 in Nexus 6 XT1103 permanently? I just need these 5 LTE bands to be enable simultaneously, is that possible?
Help any would be appreciate it.

Have you looked at that thread?
Or this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/how-to-add-rf-lte-frequency-bands-to-t2886059

I read the the first one but not the second one, let me take a look. Thanks!

Hey Mike,
Do you know what would be the decimal value for the input in QXDM NV line 06828 to enable LTE bands 2,3,4,7,12? Thanks!

If you have the T-Mobile N6, shouldn't those bands be enabled already? They should be according to this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexus_6

They are supposed to, but not all of them. The N6 indeed supports them but I don't think they are all enabled because I can't connect to LTE band 3 or 7.

There are only 2 versions of the Nexus 6. The XT1100 - International N6 and the XT1103 North American N6. All North American N6 are identical. They all have the exact same bands enabled. No difference, Zero, Zilch, Nada.

Yeah, the US version supports more bands than the International version, however, even the XT1103 supports more than 12 LTE bands all of them were not enabled by default because I couldn't connect to them even in a extremely covered area. I finally researched and I was able to modified the NV values to enable LTE bands 3 and 7 now, I'm now able to connect to those bands without any problems.

That just doesn't make sense. If they're not enabled they shouldn't advertise.
Anyway, no matter. US carriers are a joke to the rest of the world anyway

Yeah, I said the same thing, and I even called Google Store support and they had no idea why I was not able to connect, they even offered me several times to replace my unit for free just to make sure it was not a hardware problem, I was positively sure that this was a problem that could be fixed with software, but yes, I understand your point, users shouldn't have to go through the hassle of figuring out and modifying stuff that they were supposed to work out of the box.
Anyways, I'm happy now that I was able to connect to LTE outside of the US, I still need to figure out how to calculate the decimal values for the rest of the bands I want to enable later on.
Cheers!

Maybe @Azlun can help, and possibly even explain whats going on here?

That's a good idea, I know @Azlun knows how to enable LTE bands 2/3/4/7/12 . I'm new to this and this is the first time having a Nexus 6, I bought it a few days ago. I switched from a Note 4 and personally I think this was the best decision ever.

All bands your are talking about are officall support bands, so with NV6828 default value decimal 1099830466654,heximal little ending 0x 00 00 01 00 13 01 18 5E, you should gotten it by out of the box in Google play ver.
If you gotten a tmobile us, I am not sure there is more setting in EFS Exporloer,/policeman/carrier_policy.xml or not, it is suggest to remove such folder and file for you to get full hardware capability or have a validated .XML file for your target operator.

Ohhh, I didn't know that, actually I was able to connect but it has been very difficult to get LTE, sometimes it connects, sometimes it just doesn't. Could you please give the instructions on where I can find that folder and file you mentioned so I can back it up somewhere else and remove it from the phone?
Thanks a lot @Azlun!

If you can have one minute connected that mean no issues on that file, if you just have 1 second connect, try to check this file in QPST-EFS Explorer in modem Embedded File System. policeman folder....

I used to connect well a couple days ago, not anymore. Now I see that it tries to connect for 1 or 2 seconds and gets disconnected, it doesn't stick to LTE. Let me try to follow your instructions, I'll let you know! Thanks a lot Azlun .

@Azlun, I was able to connect to the embedded file system, however I don't see the folder policeman in the root, is it hidden or inside another folder? I've attached a screenshot for you to visualize. Let me know please, thanks!

that means my guessing is wrong, you are not limited by carrrier_policy.xml. but just because the network does not send right redirection message to your phone with right RF channel your phone can access to,
so I have NO solution to help. sorry.

That's OK Thanks for taking a look of the issue anyway! I noticed that if I forced the phone to go LTE only, it doesn't stick, it tries to connect for 1 second and then disconnects, then, after that if I try to force it with LTE/GSM or LTE/GSM/CDMA it will connect after 2 tries. Any ideas of what would be happening? I had a Note 4 and I didn't have any problems, I'm using the same SIM from the same carrier.
Please let me know if you have any additional idea or info. Thanks a lot @Azlun.

I did a quick google search because this seemed like an interesting idea. As far as I can tell, the bands a radio is capable of is defined by the hardware, not software.
I am not saying with any certainty that the idea won't work. I just don't think its likely.
Here is what I read, http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/cell-phone8.htm

Just because you see it in an option list doesn't mean it works.
Mine has that too - trying to enable it basically hosed my phone and I had to factory reset.
How do I install this .bin file? I haven't really done this before.
Can I just swap the files and reboot or do I have to use the install script? (and if so, how do I back it out?)

I posted this in another thread, but this one might be more appropriate now that ChodTheWacko is also saying that the penta band is showing on the phone...
"So does all the note possibly have the penta band as we are seeing in tocache's phone, or is it specific to the hong kong models? I think I also saw someone who bought from the Netherlands also have this penta band...
Could those of you that purchased this phone from other places/countries check the service mode menu to see if this is the case with all the Gnotes? Thanks in advance!"

My post above has the modem.bin from T989---S2 IF you try to flash it and it does not take then you would need the old modem bin to flash back over it. This is easy to do. The real question would be... does it need to be integrated within the kernel for it to work correctly, that I do not know. But if the software IS the same on the Note and the SGS2 then flashing the modem should work.
Need a developer to answer the finer points on this.
Be careful......messing with the modem...just a word of advice, be very careful. Only do this if you can get confirmation from an actual developer that this process is reversible.
Ignore the pressure from some of these folks here who just want to know the answer to the question whilst yapping it from a safe distance.
Remember, if the phone bricks, it's your problem and some of these folks will be as good as gone with nothing more than a good-luck, I hope Samsung fixes it under warranty.
if you want a (more) definitive answer we need to know what power amplifier module the Note has in it. our options are the SKY77606 or the SKY77604
the SKY77604 supports T-mobiles bands, the 77606 does not. does anyone have a way to check this?

notice the 77606 has "TBD" under all it's specifications, so hopefully that means that the chip isn't ready for prime time yet and the Note is using the SKY77604.

The SKY77606 is called a "tri-band" on their website, and since the Note is atleast a quad-band, this leads me to believe that the Note is using the SKY77604.

[UPDATE]
Actually looks like they title it "Quad-Band GSM / EDGE and Tri-Band (Bands I, V, VIII)" SO, looks like it does have capability for quad band. I just saw Tri-Band throughout the info... so looks like this brought us no closer...

Okay, from their table of info on the SKY chips, they show:
SKY77604 supports the following GSM bands (4 in total)
824-849
880-915
1710-1785
1850-1910
SKY77606 supports the following GSM bands (4 in total)
824-849
880-915
1710-1785
1850-1910
Which would lead me to believe that both support the 1700mhz range.
However for CDMA the stats are different.
SKY77604 supports the following CMDA bands (5 in total)
1920-1980
1850-1910
1750-1780
824-849
880-915
where as SKY77606 supports the following CDMA bands (3 in total)
1920-1980
824-849
880-915
But since T-Mobile USA is a GSM provider, I would think it wouldn't matter which chip was used... is this correct? Can someone shed some more light on these findings?

On AT&T, but where to get 64gb unlocked version

Knowing that AT&T locks their bootloaders (bastards), I'd like to get a version with an unlocked bootloader that I can mod, swap ROMs, etc.
I've found lots of 32gb versions, but I can't find many 64gb versions out there except those that are ~$1200 and I just can't spend that.
Wondering how others are solving this and getting their hands on one that's AT&T LTE friendly...
Thanks!
edit: also, if you knew a model #, that would be helpful as I'm a bit confused on all the variations.

T-Mobile (N920T) is probably the best, simplest choice. you can sign up for new service, purchase at full price, root it, get it sim unlocked using a root method (search xda) or hassle with T-Mobile and then cancel once you have it SIM unlocked. N920I also works but it's an international model. i'm using the N920T and the dual-sim N9208 on att and both work flawlessly. search-xda is your friend, you'll find all the answers you're looking for. good luck

I bought an N920T for use on at&t. here is a lengthy discussion about the potential drawbacks to the missing bands when using a tmo on att. TL/DR; on that one is that you might not get service in the boonies using a tmo on att; i haven't ever had a problem with my tmo note 4 in over a year on att.
here is a guy that can provide free SIM unlock (he's fixing to do mine in about 2 hours. many have reported success with him.) in fact i bought a tmo phone under the premise he'd be able to help me, as TMO will make a big fuss about helping you.

thanks for quoting me; i had lost this thread, and there are updates:
there was nothing wrong with the process @stifilz used to unlock the phone. the problem was that my IMEI wasn't recognized by AT&T, so they wouldn't send me LTE service. but i got that straight.
it appears i use primarily bands 4 and 5 here.
ooo so band 17.. you are speaking about an AT&T phone huh?? that's not as good, as there is some debate as to whether or not a TMOBILE phone will receive at&t's band 17 correctly. i think i already linked that thread previously, so you might re-read that to see if it'll provide an issue for you.
cheapest, tho not the easiest, way for you to figure out if you'll have problems is to find a person using an unlocked TMO phone and put your sim card in it, and then see if it gets LTE (particularly band 17)

Good to hear. AT&T made that same mistake with my OPO. Always a chuckle when you know more than the service reps.
Yeah, I've been checking LTE discovery anytime I go anywhere different in DC and it's always band 17 which the TMO version doesn't have. There is band 4 here, but it's considerably less frequent and a much weaker signal. So, that likely means that I'll get spotty LTE service most of the time and have extra battery suck as it works to switch between LTE and 3G. Not sure it's worth it since I'm pretty constantly on the move...

Well there's a guy in a thread iposted about earlier in the Q&A section that spoke up to say his tmobile note 5 does connect to 17 all the time, I'm waiting on his response as to whether that's AT&T band 17 or t-mobile band 17. ( I don't know if there is a difference or if it makes a difference)
Might still be a go

I think that's gotta be a mistake. According to TMO's site, it doesn't have LTE 17 and they're standard frequencies.
But, the question for me will be how strong LTE4 is. It might be enough. I'm trying to figure out how to disable 17 on my OPO for testing...

Interesting, but I'm not sure I'm buying it - take a look at TMO's spec sheet - http://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phones/samsung-galaxy-note5.html
Doesn't list Band 17.
I think I'll need some corroboration on that...

Anyone have 2x Carrier Aggregation working on LTE? (Qualcomm)

I'm not sure if there any non-Qualcomm variants of this phone so if there isn't please let me know. I'm curious if anyone has carrier aggregation working on their devices? I have the unlocked US XT1806 variant and noticed I wasn't seeing the speeds on LTE I was supposed to be seeing. I checked the FCC certification documents and verified my FCC ID matched the one listed and I see it was tested and certified with many different 2xCA combos on the LTE side. Confusion indeed! Once I unlocked and rooted the device I was able to load up the awesome Network Signal Guru app and sure enough there was no carrier aggregation going on, usually a speed test in the background will kick the radio into 2xCA mode if the tower supports it. I saw this same exact behavior with the Moto E4 Plus but I ended up returning that phone for various reasons.
However! After a bit of digging around with some QPST NV items on the chipset I was able to enable 2xCA! And yes, it was certified by the FCC so no worries there! Not sure why they disabled it but I'm trying to gauge if others are seeing the same disabled CA on other variants. I will end up doing a guide on how to enable it if there is enough need.
"But wait!? What's 2xCA?" It's where your phone combines more "lanes" of the LTE highway to give you faster speeds and/or better throughput especially in congested areas. It's a good thing to have when there is no WiFi around.
Motorola even advertises this phone as a Cat 7 LTE modem which is strange that it is a Cat 6 modem shown in the FCC docs. Without CA, it's kinda hard to get 300 megabit down that Cat6 has.
How to enable this?

I have an xt1806 and I am not sure if it is disabled. Is it in the build.prop?
I haven't rooted yet... Is there a service menu to check?
What carrier is this for and how can we check and enable CA if available?

Actually any carrier than supports CA and has it deployed in your area. You'll need root and to install Network Signal Guru to check. If we get a few checks of things out there and we find more with it disabled then I'll do the guide otherwise it would be kinda pointless.

Yep, it should be showing band 13 in the CA mix or possibly band 2 if deployed in your market. Which model is this?

i was on band 2 this morning. im in palo alto CA on T-Mobile if that helps.
I also got an xt1806 recently, unlocked on Verizon. I'm in a pretty rural area and speeds are pretty spotty due to obstacles between me and the tower.
Though it does stay in LTE most of the time, on band 13. I'm using LTE Discovery app off of the app store.

Another great app is CellMapper. Maps out your area and estimates tower locations, shows the bands etc. Crowdsourced app, pretty awesome app and website.

As expected, using cell mapper, there's no data in this town, severe lack of technology here... I'll use it for awhile to generate some data.
Band 13 is all I ever see. 700MHz~. It apparently sees other LTE bands, but they're not identified.

SM-N950F Slow Network Speeds On AT&T

Hey there fellas! I recently purchased an international Galaxy Note 8 to use on AT&T here in the U.S. Everything appears to work fine except the speed of my network. Normally in this area I would be getting LTE speeds around 30-40 up and down. With the Note 8 is displays H+ (which I understand to be LTE, but I may be wrong) and I get around 5-7 down and often less than 1mbps up. Some have suggested setting the preferred network time to LTE/UMTS auto (PRL) which was already selected on my device. Is there anything else I can do to get the proper speeds? Thanks!

On all of my international versions H+ was 3G and 4G was LTE. Depending on the area with 4G I would get 20 - 50 megs down on AT&T. On my 950U1 my settings under #*#*4636*#*# I have TD-SCDMA/CDMA/UMTS selected by default and mine shows LTE and depending on the area up to 100 megs down.
H+ is 3G, or 3.5G for some carriers

Ah, that would explain why my speeds are so slow. Thank you for clearing that up. I attempted to select TD-SCDMA/CDMA/UMTS as my preferred network mode but for whatever reason it will not apply. When I reopen that settings menu it goes back to whatever option was selected prior to that. Do you think it could have something to do with the selected APN? I have ATT Phone as my current APN, but at the store they were trying to use ATT Nextgenphone, which didn't work.

I would do all I could to get the Nextgenphone APN working. It is what I used on all my international phones.
Took the Note 8 into the AT&T store today and swapped out the sim card without any luck. As usual they couldn't provide any help beyond that. I also I can't select TD-SCDMA/CDMA/UMTS as my preferred network type for some reason. I contacted the person I bought the phone from and they claimed they used it on Verizon's LTE network without an issue. Very strange.

Would you mind sharing what your CSC on your Note 8 is? I might end up flashing whatever firmware your phone is using, as mine is currently running a firmware for French phones. Not sure if thats the issue, but its possible.

I may be totally off here, but wouldn't that be an issue as the AT&T variant uses a Snapdragon SoC, while my device uses Exynos? Another concern for me would the ability to root as well, which is one of the reasons I decided not to buy an AT&T branded phone. Thanks for your help so far man, I appreciate it!

You are right. There is no AT&T firmware for your phone. Unless they changed something with the Note8 you should still be able to get 4G. I did with my international Note4, Note5, and Xperia Z5 Premium models. My son is using the Note5 with an Exynos processor and gets 4G speeds comparable to LTE speeds in the area.
Had this problem as well way back when I first got my 950F.
There are solutions. But you would need one of 2 things.
1. Get At&t to add your IMEI# TO their database so that they can provision your phone correctly.
2. Get another At&t branded phone's IMEI# that is LTE COMPATIBLE. and call them to provision you phone with that #.
My phone is getting full LTE speeds and VOLTE.
But I had them put in the IMEI# of my older Note 5!( which my wife is currently using)...
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I called ATT and gave them your suggestion and they claimed that it would not work. They said provisioning my new phone with an IMEI of a different phone would be temporary up to 2-3 weeks. Have you encountered this issue? I'm assuming not, so I'm curious as to how long you've had this fixed. Thanks again man

Converting SM-N960D/Dual Sim Exynos to Full T mobile US

Hello Im pretty new with samsung devices. I like my device to be rooted so i bought the SM-N960D/Dual Sim Exynos (BRI,BRI,BRI,BRI)
I Noticed that my wides T mobile US snapdragon Note 9 signal is fantastic and also she gets LTE but with mine I don't get LTE and my signal is bad..
So it looks like the N960D is missing a bunch of bands that T-Mobile uses for LTE. It has bands 2 and 4 for sure, but it may or may not have band 12 (conflicting google info), and doesn't have band 66 or 71. This is the cause of your signal woes, and can't be fixed. It either has the bands, or it doesn't.

Based on most of the stuff I see online, the N960F / D does indeed have band 66 and 71.
I'm going by the info I found here:

http://phonedb.net/index.php?m=devi...e_9_td-lte_jp_sc-01l__sgh-n058__samsung_crown (which lists it as a snapdragon, so **** this site)
I also tried looking it up at the Samsung.cn and Samsung.jp sites, but not knowing where the phone originated from, I can't get an accurate idea of what it has or doesn't have.

https://www.samsung.com/ae/smartphones/galaxy-note9/specs/

So 2, 4 and 12, MAYBE 66, no 71? Yeah, 66 is huge for T-Mobile now. 71 is going to be a big deal towards the end of this year.

How about banking apps and work e-mail, considering they use device management. Have you faced an issues with that?
I think you quoted the wrong person. Personally, since AdHell/SABS came out, I've lost all desire to root. Ad blocking and stock Android was my only motivation, but right now I'm digging the Samsung Experience UI.

That's inaccurate.
Frequency check is usually accurate, but, they got it wrong,or,just haven't got around to entering the correct information in this instance.
Check the Samsung sites in the countries that are known to sell/use the Exynos models & you'll get an accurate listing of 2G/3G/4G LTE Bands on-board.
