[Q] Battery drain / rogue app? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everybody,
I was given a Z3C from a friend and I am experiencing ridiculous battery drain when idle. The phone discharge at a rate of 6-7% per hour, meaning that at best I have to recharge it at the end of the day.
I had a look on the forum and so far I performed the following:
- factory reset (twice)
- reinstall Lollipop via PC Companion
- restart the phone with the yellow button next to sim card (several times)
- untick "send usage statistics" under file commander
- put on stamina mode (no difference)
I use Nova Launcher.
Last night I left the phone on at 57% and airplane mode at 11pm and went to bed, this morning I woke up at 6.30 and it was off (hence it can't be connectivity).
Better Battery Stats says that the phone is awake 100% of the time when screen is off. Under Power Management the bigger drainer is Play services with 25% now.
On a typical day I only use Gmail and Whatsapp, listen to some music, but no FB, Twitter and so on. I have a pretty lean configuration. Clearly the problem is when Idle.
I don't think this is a matter of Lollipop messing around with my phone but rather something hidden running for no reason.
I used to have a Galaxy S4 and never had a problem with Lollipop, so I am surprised.
How do you think I can find the culprit?

Little update for who is happy to lend a hand on this.
I ran GSam and found out that Android System has a 15% battery consumption. Inside of it, there are multiple packages and most likely the drainer is among them.
Can anyone suggest which packages are safe/possible to disable?

Can't point you exactly to what you're looking for, but here are a couple of points:
1. There's a small problem with Lollipop - it requires updated Google Services, but sometimes the update doesn't go through properly, you can't even initiate it - Play says everything's good. It might be a cause for battery drain. Easiest to check - revert to KitKat, install it, if no drain - then it's Lollipop-specific, if drain - then look further.
2. First installation of the OS after factory reset, with nothing loaded, if there's drain - it comes from HW that's not behaving as expected and SW being somewhere in eternal loop / reading something unexpected. Not much to do here except identify the failing HW (probably not easy) and disable the driver for it.

Thanks.
That sounds complicated. Do you see something clearly wrong in the info I provided above? (i.e. % of battery use, packages that shouldn't be there?)

Battery Life Suddenly Dropped

Hey guys,
About a week ago I started rapidly losing battery life.
I've done a bunch of research and installed task killers, OS monitors, Spare Parts, etc. I've uninstalled apps that had wake_lock and done a Reset to Factory Defaults, changed the brightness, as well as performed a recalibration for the battery (one cycle). I also turned the phone to Airplane mode since I moved offices and thought maybe that was a problem.
I am not sure why this is the problem, but I have notices through spare parts that my phone does not go to sleep. The time it gives for Time without Sleeping (under "other Usage->Last Unplugged) is typically about the same time as I have had it off the charger. The phone will not last a full day anymore (Actually I'm lucky if it's still on when I get home from work). The only program that I can think of is the new maps application.
Here are my questions:
1) Is there a good way to find out if there is a specific program that is not allowing sleep (w/o uninstalling everything and adding them back one by one)?
2) How do I fix this problem? Would a hard reset work?
3) Generaloes anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Why wont my phone go to sleep?
4) Could this have anything to do with the new maps/navigation update that Google sent out OTA last week?
Right now it has not slept for over 5 hours, but I been pressing the power button (not turning it off) when I put it down.
I ca provide a list of programs if that helps, probably some statistics too
Thanks!
In Spare Parts under Battery usage, there is a "Partial wake usage" option. Did you check that to see what is keeping it awake?
Since Last Unplugged:
Android System: 6m 16s (blue bar)
Dialer: 1m 40s (blue bar)
Facebook: 56s
Google: 44s
Media 28s
Google Voice: 20s
Calendar: 20s
Messaging 4s
None of that seems to make sense when you look at:
Other Usage: Time Spent Without Sleeping: 6h 36m 1s..
Maybe I am mis-reading it?
Thanks!

How I solved my battery drain problem!
Have you tried turning off 3G?
I also had this issue battery drain was huge. It started appearing suddenly one day. Its a very slow process to figure out the culprit. I did a step by step analysis.
1. Found out that battery drain was happening only when 3G was on. Verified this by switching off data network (long press power button to deactivate).
2. Also verified abnormal data usage in my carrier page when I was not using my phone [like - 3G was on and I was watching a movie at a theater].
3. I also saw abnormal battery drain soon after I started Google Maps after a fresh reboot.
4. So I identified the culprit - Google Maps - but was not sure how to solve battery drain [Google Maps restarts, if you kill it].
5. I installed a variety of apps to identify the battery hog. Finally I went for Task Identifier.
6. Task Identifier finally showed me what programs started while my screen was off, etc. And I started noting them. Finally I figured out that Google Maps::BackgroundFriendService was running frequently.
7. A quick search on Google helped me understand that this is about Google Latitude. It searches for your friend's location every now and then - leading to battery drain!!!
8. I opened up Latitude and signed out from it [I guess the sign out option is in Menu -> Privacy].
9. Do not re-open Google Latitude after this - you will get signed in again leading to battery drain.
10. After 2-3 months of search and prodding, I finally figured out the cause of battery drain and fixed it - now I get 2 - 3 days of charge in my battery under normal usage!!
I'm happy now!!
Hi,
If you're using Froyo and can access file in your phone,
In task manager , on the tab "Summary", click on the "start monitoring" button. Let it monitor the phone over the night. The next morning, there should be 2 files created in your sdcard, one is CPUxxxxx and the other one is battxxxxxx.
The Batxxx tells you when the percentage of the battery at certain time of time. the CPUxxxx will tell you wht applications are running during that period.
When i used it first time, i notice that facebook and lattitude always running - when I stop these 2 tasks; i get a normal drain again.
while you guys are at it.
here's my "problem".
when I surf for an hour over 2g I losing about 10% batterylife and android reports that my display uses around 90% to 95% of the battery.
display is set to lowest brightness + screen filter.
is that normal? (im guessing it is not).
used dozens of different roms (stock, darky, jims, etc...), same behaviour everywhere.
i already did all the battery stat wiping and whatnot.
is it a faulty battery or display or something?
for the OP, maybe a combination of the above with this could help :

helped me .
edit : to pfannenwender, maybe your unit is faulty?

Battery drain after Android 9 update

My phone got the update to Android 9 a little over a week ago, and since then it has been losing battery like crazy. For example, last night I left it unplugged as a test, and it lost 30-40% of battery within 6 hours (while I was sleeping). Before the update, a fully charged battery was able to last for two days, now it doesn't even manage one. The phone is often noticeably warm.
I restricted all "consuming apps" some days ago, that did not make any difference. I also tried 3rd-party apps to analyze the battery consumption, but did not find any way to figure out what consumes all the battery in the background / while the screen is off.
Using Google I found other people with the same problem, but I did not find a solution. What can I do?
I had a same kind of problem but it started a few days after a manual update flash. I had been experimenting with some root stuff (mostly magisk though so they should go away by uninstalling the modules) but could also not figure out the reason for the drain.
I also tried to reflash only system and vendor partitions, but ended with a bootloop, so I had to flash the whole firmware again. No problems after that.
I would try a factory reset if I were you.
You can also try GSam battery monitor (if you already haven't) to figure out what's happening with your phone while the screen is off and it should be sleeping.
I upgrade the XPZ yesterday to 4.41 Pie. Charge the mobile after upgrade to 100%.
The current situation looks like:
18hour active, 30 Min Display, a few calls... Whatsall, newsletter, Mail..... are running in the Background, LTE, EDGE and WiFi are always on, BT has a connection to my watch...
88% are still in the Accu. (Save mobil datatransfer is aktiv; additional the option is enabled to reduce power consumption for apps in background)

Factory Reset does NOT solve S10 Battery Drain (15-20%) when Idle

I noticed my Samsung S10 T-Mobile Snapdragon would drain about 15-20% overnight while asleep (6-8 hours) since last week or so. The drain during the day is also significantly worse, but it's easier to compare the numbers when on idle. The first weeks that I had the phone, I was losing less than 5% overnight (6-8 hours). I am not sure if this was caused by the security updates, carrier updates, or a rogue application. I made no changes to the phone settings that I can recall. My phone was connected to WIFI overnight, with cellular, cellular data, and Bluetooth on. Prior to going to bed I would charge the phone to about 80% and unplug it.
I installed AccuBattery after reading some forums and it showed that my battery drain overnight was about 2-3% PER hour. AccuBattery also indicated that my phone was in deep sleep +85% of the time. The breakdown per application does not total the 15-20% so there's something else draining the battery. Eventually, I uninstalled AccuBattery to see if it was contributing to the drain, and it made no difference.
Below are most of the things that I have tried and tested overnight while I slept (6-8 hours), all of them have been UNSUCCESSFUL at solving the battery drain. I might have forgotten some other settings that I have changed. Keep in mind that this took me over a week of playing around with these settings, and checking the battery right before and after I went to sleep.
Restarted phone (There's always someone who would suggest this if not written down)
Cleared Google Services, Google, and other Apps Cache and Data
Cleared Cache Memory (Through recovery menu - Tried this about 5 times at this point)
Reset the big 3 (Reset settings, Reset network settings, Reset accessibility settings)
Enabled Airplane Mode (Cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth Off)
Disabled Location
Disabled Sync
Disabled Always on Display
Disabled ALL Motions and Gestures (e.g. Lift to Wake, Double tap to wake, Smart Stay, etc.)
Disabled Video enhancer
Disabled Game Launcher
Disabled Bixby Routines
Disabled Nearby Device Scanning
Disabled WiFi Scanning and Bluetooth Scanning (Improve Accuracy)
Disabled Show icon when screen is off (under fingerprints - from Samsung Forums)
Disabled certain Apps (AR Emoji, ARCore, Briefing, Chrome, Game Launcher, Google, Facebook, Secure Folder, etc.)
Forced Stop certain Apps (Bixby, Secure WiFi, etc. - they seem to all come back after a couple of minutes anyway)
Enabled/Disabled Adaptive Power Saving (Tried both settings, made no difference)
Enabled/Disabled Auto Optimization (Tried both settings, made no difference)
Switched between Power Modes (Optimized to Medium, made no difference)
Change lock screen and home screen to a 100% black wallpaper
Ran Safe Mode overnight with ALL of the settings above (Airplane with Location and Sync Off, etc.) Still got a 15% drain overnight.
Last night after I got fed up with playing with the countless of options, I decided to Factory Reset the phone thinking that this would solve my battery drain problem. Well, WRONG. Still got a 15% battery drain overnight with only the core apps installed, in airplane mode, location and sync disabled, and other settings disabled. I did NOT restore any backups from Samsung or Google, nor installed any additional apps that did not come with the phone.
I have complained to Samsung through their Samsung Members application under Feedback. If you guys are on the same boat, I suggest we all start complaining so that they can start taking a look at this and hopefully release a fix.
If you guys have any tips or anything has worked for you guys, please let me know.

If its still draining that much even in flight mode, then something is definitely wrong. Seems like you've tried everything. Can you not get a replacement under warranty from where you purchased it? Sounds faulty.

I have had this same issue with my S7. Hence my reply. At that time I have traced it down to a certain kernel process. The only way to resolve this was to replace the motherboard. A factory reset didnt helped either.
Later when i investigated it further it was like an Interrupt request for sleep mode. Eleminating the phone going to deep sleep. Than you will see drains like this
My advice. Get the device replaced. It was the only way to resolve the problem on my S7. Hardware replacement

Also, how did you manage to get your phone replaced? By Samsung? I am past the 30 day return policy so I am not sure how easy/hard it will be for the to replace my device/motherboard. What did you say to them exactly?
Reflash firmware?
Which update are you on?
After the ASCA, but before the finger print sensor update, I had amazing battery life, less than 1% per hour on idle.
But after finger print sensor update, it's about 2% per hour on idle.
Maybe reflash ASCA without the fps update? If it's possible

Spoke to someone in Reddit and he flashed his phone to the Febraury update. It still had bad idle drain.
Additional things I have tried recently overnight with no success
Disabled fingerprint
Removed SIM Card
Cleared memory cache again
I'll wait for the April update and see if that solves things. If not, I guess I'll drop by one of their service centers/genuis bars.
What a terrible experience...
Yeah that does not seem normal.
With airplane mode drop 0.2%/hours.
Sorry you are having bad issues. I would try to install U1 firmware and see if that helps.

I'm having the same issue after the recent updates on AT&T. I used to get close to 9 hours SOT and now I barely get 4. Nothing unusual in the battery stats either so I'm not sure what's going on.
Same here. The idle drain is completely insane! It's a shame that the phone suffers from issues like this when you compare it to the price we paid for it. From what I can tell the issue stems from the kernel not being able to figure out the proper frequencies for the cores in idle which leads to **** performance. I'm gonna try to flash the asd4 firmware via odin once. If it doesn't work I'm gonna get a replacement if possible. Currently I get around 4 hours of sot no matter what I do. Doesn't matter what I do which is super weird. My s7 edge which was at least 2 years old gave me a better sot more regularly, so I'm definitely pretty irritated with this. Will update once I flash over odin.

To all who has this issues. First thing to check is .. Does the phone ever enters deep sleep ....
I used this app on my S7..
Wakelock Detector. Can be found in google play.. Sorry cant post links due to my new status here.
A teraz Rozwiazanie . Wychodzimy w MENU - ZAAWANSOWANE FUNKCJE - RUCH I GESTY* - i odznaczamy opcję DOTKNIJ DWUKROTNIE ABY WYBUDZIĆ. następnie w MENU - EKRAN BLOKADY - ALWAYS ON DISPLAY - TRYB WYŚWIETLACZA zmieniamy opcję DOTKNIJ ABY POKAZAĆ na którąś z pozostałych lub całkowicie wyłączamy ALWAYS ON DISPLAY . To powinno rozwiązać problem z baterią w moim przypadku kończąc**pracę**z telefonem w kieszeni po 8 godzinach miałem 30% Baterii a teraz 70% .

BetterBatteryStats shows it goes to deep sleep 99% of the time overnight. No abnormal kernel wakelocks/partial wakelocks/alarms.
A couple of other things I have tried recently unsuccessfully while sleeping (6-8 hours) over the past week:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode + airplane mode
Safe Mode + airplane mode + cache wipe + Google services wipe
Safe Mode + airplane mode + cache wipe + Google services wipe + Remaining Apps in Sleep Mode (Battery Settings>Sleeping Apps)
Safe Mode + airplane mode + cache wipe + Google services wipe + Remaning Apps in Sleep Mode + Max Battery Mode (instead of Optimized Mode)
The best idle drain I got overnight was 15% drain over ~6 hours (~2.5%/hour)
I'll try disabling the Adaptive Battery/Auto Optimization while I have all my Apps in Sleep Mode an Safe Mode. I'll also try another Factory Reset this weekend.
If that doesn't work, I'll schedule an appointment with one of their service centers.
This sucks. My 2-year old S7 Edge still has better battery life than this.
I remember reading a post on Reddit from a guy saying he had a current leak on his faulty motherboard. Maybe you got the same issue on yours.

After reading your comment, I decided to test the phone completely off overnight.
To my surprise the battery drain was still present. From 5PM to 730AM my battery went down from 87% to 60%!!! So about ~2%/hour while the S10 was COMPLETELY OFF.
I'll be taking my phone to the service center sometime this week. For anybody else having crazy drain problems, turn your device completely off and see if the drain is still present. It might be a hardware issue

Odd battery life

Hello,
Since the purchase of my phone XZ1 Compact (G8441), I've been experiencing barely acceptable battery life. This is especially frustrating since I bought this phone having heard that it can last easily 2-3 days, but this is not the case for me (discharging about 4%h on average or 2.5%h with screen off on either wifi or mobile data, with various configurations outside/home/office, i.e. in practice never usable more than a day).
According to *#*#SERVICE#*#*, the battery life is still good (2704 mAh). The issue I am experiencing is most likely due to an unknown software and/or hardware failure leading to lots of wakelocks that prevent the phone from "sleeping"/"dozing" correctly.
I know that MANY users worldwide are experiencing this and Sony never gave an answer to this, according to e.g. the following threads:
https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xper...-drain-after-update-47-1-A-12-235/m-p/1337029
https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xper...-drain-after-47-1-A-12-205-update/m-p/1328053
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz1-compact/help/battery-life-bit-odd-t3688342/page8
https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-XZ1-Compact/High-battery-drain/m-p/1326474 https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xper...-drain-after-update-47-1-A-12-270/m-p/1340671 https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xper...pie-battery-drain-CPU-idling-high/m-p/1354891
and many others
In my case the items "NlpWakeLock" and "RILJ_ACK_WL" activate both up to thousands of times every hour. No relevant information could be found about this in the web lookups I've done, and I am not sure this is related to the issue I'm facing. I joined a log of today's better battery stats with a pathetic 1h20 of SOT and 65% discharge, a huge count of wakelocks except when I was listening to music, and an apparent faster discharge with the idle phone than when actually used.
The phone is running the latest downloadable Sony firmware 47.2.A.10.107.
Of course, factory reset was tried with no amelioration and I tried to contact directly Sony which have basically no willingness to help or investigate.
Anyone would have a clue about this?
Thanks,
Alexandre
Do you use Google Now (google assistant) - NlpWakeLock
If not, disable it and see what happens.
This little phone I have for battery life and for banking/authenticator/etc. Not for work. So I have disabled most things I do not need (adb uninstall) - so the battery is quite good on standby.
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, as I don't use GoogleNow, the whole Google App is already disabled...
I'll try and do some adb uninstall and will keep you posted

Looking at the bbs stats. The first thing I noticed is that your wifi is on all the time. Try turning it to only when awake and disable the wifi scanning in locatin settings.
RIL wakelocks are on because you have poor signal, it's the number of handhakes your phone does with the local cell tower and if you have bad signal, it gets higher.
Some providers offer home 4g boosters for your home or 'calls over wifi', either of these would reduce your battery usage.
My phone has been flawless (2-3 days on battery when I don't play games) but suddenly it started behaving like described in the original post.
It has 1 day life now and I haven't found the reason for this change. I have removed all recently installed apps, removed all unnecessary apps (including Facebook app), disabled running in background for some (like Messenger), there was no firmware update at that time. Still something is eating up the battery. SmartPanel tool shows that 58% of battery is Unaccounted (next is display and Google Services). I have not done the factory reset yet because I need fully configured phone right now.
