I just got a new Moto G, but it's the XT1064 version. I'd like to root, but it seems there's no XT1064 option for CF-Auto-Root from Chainfire. Should I use the XT1063 one?

I have had a huge amount of frustration attempting to root the XT1064 over the past couple of days. If you're not afraid of reflashing your phone then you can try it but I highly doubt you'll be able to get it to work.
You can easily upgrade it to Lollipop with "official" firmware, but rooting has given me bootloop after bootloop.
After purchasing the Moto G XT1064 and spending 8+ hours trying to update and root the phone and remove all of the Motorola crapware, I eventually gave up. Right now I have version 22.11.6 installed, which is named "Blur_Version.21.11.17.titan_retuaws.retuaws.en.US.zip", it makes sense to include the old version number, but they should at least call it "Blur_Version_from.21.11.17.titan...".
I really wish Google would REQUIRE manufacturers to release a stock android rom and an easy way to flash it with every consumer Android phone sold. Then developers could focus on improving the phone instead of millions of programmer-hours wasted on trying to remove the crapware and get it updated.
If you're a developer who wants a clean phone and don't want to waste dozens of hours screwing with flashing roms, just get a GPE or Nexus device, it's not worth saving $200. It's a great phone, but if you were looking for a phone that is easy to develop with, this doesn't seem like the right one. After my Droid X I swore off non-nexus devices, but the Amazon sale got me.
A couple of people claim to be able to get UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.16.zip working, (yes, SuperSU v2.39 exists now, it probably won't work though), but many more people (including myself) were not able to get it working.
Good luck! Please report back if you find a good solution, I'm guessing that many people are tired of the hoops we have to jump through to get a non-crapware stock Andorid device.
The seller kindly told me he can exchange my XT1064 for an XT1063, as rooting is my first concern (need to get Japanese fonts on it). So I hope to easily root with CF-Auto-Root now. I'll get my new phone in two days. I'm already crossing my fingers . Rooting should be a readily available option by the manufacturer, just like Motorola offers you to unlock the bootloader. Otherwise you're extremely limited. For example, to change a font. Samsungs let you do it in the original firmware, something as basic as this should already be in stock Android. And at least ext2 support, it's a Linux FS from 1993. We are stuck with crappy FAT32.

You can change the file systems using: TWRP2.7.1.1-titan-motog-2014.img as your recovery.
I agree about the manufacturers. I thought it was growing pains in the early days of Android but we millions of us have to waste several hours trying to get decent security, privacy, and performance out of our phones. All anybody wants is stock Android.
Great if you try, I've seen no feedback of someone using it on XT1064. Won't changing the recovery affect future OTA updates? I was thinking of trying Stickmount with NTFS-3G. It only needs rooted device.

I was able to get 5.0 rooted. Not with CF Auto Root though.
I used TWRP2.7.1.1-titan-motog-2014.img and BETA-SuperSU-v2.38.zip but SuperSU had to be put on my internal storage.
Can you go back to stock recovery after installing SuperSU? As to have future OTA updates. I'm mean, only use TWRP for rooting.

You put SuperSU on internal storage because that's the only way TWRP can flash it or because that's the only way you could get root (I.e., flashing from external storage didn't work)?
I have tried both CFAutoRoot and flashing SuperSU from external storage. SuperSU resulted in bootloop. AutuRoot worked but I couldn't power off my phone without the next power up throwing things into a bootloop. I chose not to leave my phone on all the time, so flashed a non-root backup.
I haven't tried flashing SuperSU from internal storage. So maybe that's something to try.
My Nexus 6 has finally shipped! It should be here Friday!
This is my first Nexus and I have never rooted, unlocked, flashed, etc. any of my previous phones.
I have been doing a lot of research and have been considering running CM12.
My question is, should I run my Nexus 6 with stock android for a few weeks and then try CM12? Or should I just root, unlock, and flash CM12 as soon as I get it?
I know that if I wait then I will need to back up all my data because it will factory data reset but I am not worried about that... I understand it is easier to do it right out of the box because you don't have to worry about loosing anything but I can just back my info/apps up so that isn't a big deal.
Also, would you guys suggest something over CM12? Right now I am planning on using CM12 and just getting it setup how I like it then leaving it. I don't plan on always flashing and making changes but I might get sucked into it lol

Good point! I don't know if CM is on 5.1 yet. I just assumed it was but I will look into it. This is all new to me so thanks for pointing that out, didn't even think about that!
I won't know what version is on the phone until Friday. But even if it is on 5.0 I am sure it will notify me that 5.1 is ready to download as soon as I boot up the phone.
On my other phones I usually got rid of the stock and was on a custom ROM a pretty quick. I have tried a few ROMs on this phone as well. in my experience if you want to be on 5 .1 currently the best way to go is stock with debloating . Or use one of the clean/vanilla ROMs. Of course I did not test them all there are so many out there. Good luck with your new toy.

I'd recommend updating to 5.1 if it doesn't ship with 5.1. Then, I'd run stock for at least a few days to get a baseline for comparison. I think this is useful especially for bugs. That way you can get an idea of the issues that exist in stock 5.1 before using a custom ROM.

What about rooting and unlocking? Would you suggest waiting on that as well? Is there really any reason to unlock and root if I won't be running CM? I was going to root so that I could decrypte but it sounds like the lag from encryption is fixed in 5.1.
Well I would guess you WILL want to unlock and root because who does want to be able to run a root level ad blocker? Who wants to wait on OTA for an update? Not me.
I got mine from Google, as well, and heres what I did:
Played with the phone in stock form for like an hour saw it was still on 5.01 even after updating
Decided this is not for me. I wanted my root apps and I wanted to copy all the stuff off my old phone with Titanium backup to the Nexus
Looked on the interwebs for the easiest way to get root
Found a tool from my old buddy WugFresh (I knew him in the Droid X days)
Prepared myself for a giant PITA night. Download, drivers, and programs, reading various sites, etc, etc, etc
Was freaking SHOCKED that the tool did ALL THIS for me. I mean I literally plugged in my phone and it collected and set up everything. (It also has a console if you feel the need to type in adb commands)
Was unlocked, upgraded, rooted with a custom recovery with all my apps copied over in less than an hour

You only need to decrypt, IMO, if you are running high end games that demand that level of performance. I have not seen any lag myself. Again this is my own personal experience. Your results may vary. 5.1 has optimized out many of the issues I heard about in 5.01 or so I have been told.

I unlocked and rooted right away, mainly for the ability to use Titanium Backup to setup my phone and in the event that I installed a custom ROM. Outside of TB, I haven't really needed or used root, but it sure is nice to have. I played with a few custom ROMs before 5.1 came out but mostly felt that I preferred the stock experience. I downloaded the MCR modpack found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58019266&postcount=1 but have yet to install it. If/when I do, root will become more of a requirement for my uses.
I came from a Verizon Note 4 which could not be rooted. I got used to not playing with my phone and just using the stock experience. Its nice that the stock experience on the N6 is so fantastic and stable. It makes it easy to just use the phone without worry of fixing, modding, and adding features, though I still enjoy those aspects too which is why I'll likely use MultiROM next time I decide to install something custom.
Dude are you somehow tied up with this Tool Kit? You`re promoting it on so many threads i`am starting to get the impression you`re not quite objective about it There is no harm in using toolkits by xperienced users and i`am sure its well build, but for newbies its very dangerous because they`re lost if something should go wrong.

Which is exactly why I'm promoting it it is almost bulletproof. what's the alternative loading all the different tools and drivers they need and following some instructions found on the internet.
And as I explained in my post you can just download the tool to make sure you have all the drivers and connections. use it to get the proper files you need and then run the command line like a power user if you want to feel better about yourself.

I will never use/promote a Toolkit even if it seems very good for the reason i posted earlier. Flashing manualy in fastboot doesn`t take more time and makes users more aware about their phone and knowledge of it and gives you control over whats happening Just my 2 cents.
My two cents. I don't think you've dealt with enough newbies. on another forum it was me and a group of others that would help people get their phones out of boot loops and soft bricks. I have literally helped hundreds of people get their phone back.
even if you look here on XDA you'll see people trying to flash the wrong files download files that are not even for their phone, are following a dated instruction or don't really understand how directories work.

Thanks for the info! I actually had just downloaded this program over the weekend and was planning on using it once I do decide to root... which I am thinking will be as soon as I get the phone. lol other than that I think I am going to run it on stock for a while at first and wait until CM is on 5.1 for a while....

Thanks! I am planning on rooting and unlocking right away for TB and maybe a couple other little things like lightflow just for fun. Being the nerd that I am, I have a feeling that once I start playing with the whole rooting, unlocking, and flashing stuff I am going to really enjoy it.

Thanks for the reply! I see what you are saying, I had already come across Wug's toolkit over the weekend and was planning on using that because it seemed so simple.
However, seeing how I still have two and a half days until my phone will be here, maybe I will look into the manual way a little more to decide which route I want to go.... Any suggestions on where to start? Threads, videos, etc?

Boot into download mode, Unlock bootloader, reboot, boot back into download mode, fastboot twrp recovery, boot into recovery, reboot via recovery and install su when prompted. When you boot into android you will be prompted to update su. You now are rooted. Only other thing I would think about when you first get your device is if you want forced encryption. You will be required to wipe SD data if you decide to go with non forced encryption.
I loved cm on my previous touchwiz devices because I like stock/asop style. I find cm has bugs in early os update releases. I would only install cm if i took advantage of themes which I don't.

looking around i can not find anywhere that exactly states what versions of android and on what devices towelroot supports. My question specifically being for the S5 SM-G900A att phone. I am right now on lollipop and i realise i have to downgrade, but I only want to downgrade as little as possible to get towelroot to work. (the end goal being root access of course)
On another note I have two other questions i will ask here so as to not clutter the forum.
1. is there anyway to downgrade my android version without wiping all my data?
if not, any advice on backing up all my data before it gets wiped? mainly my photos, apps, and appdata.
2. I see the only custom recovery i can use is safestrap, i have read is some places that it can not backup your user data (videos, photos, etc.) and nowhere mention it does. question being if this is true and if so how can i back up all my data? i really like the idea of just doing weekly rom backups and being able to restore all my apps and all my data with very little lost (less then a week is good enough for me).

If you took the OTA update to 5.0 their is currently no way to safely downgrade and root.
Towel root only worked on 4.4.2 kernel.
Safestrap no longer works in 5.0 either.
Just have to hang tight till someone figures out root for stock 5.0.
Thank you for the help, i did not realize it was for 4.4.2 only. (why no list of working versions) as well you say no safe way to downgrade.....are there options or is it impossible? I just got the phone recently and I wasn't the one to update it, I got it second hand and well i can't control what has happened to it before me. sadly it was updated to 5.0

The above post is the unbrick/downgrade thread for the g900a.
You'll notice it says not to attempt if you've taken the OC4 ota...I'd read through their first. At this point it looks pretty risky.

So, I first received one of these after 4.4.4 was already on it. about a year ago successful root using ExtremeSlimRoot. Wonderful, beautiful little phone that is super snappy fast even today. So, as I use it as as secondary phone, thought it's been close to a year, why not see if boot unlock code avail or exploit has been discovered. Had a couple related questions
So, wanted to confirm, non dev devices with locked bootloaders and 5.1 have no exploit now or forever to unlock?
Additionally, phone has been rooted for quite awhile, SuperSU is constantly upset about a binary that won't update, likely because was injected into a read only section of system? Is there any easy fix or is only option to stock restore, and grab a newer root option?
Has there been any develops or recommended updates since slimroot, or is that still about what is available for this device?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 SN-N900A (AT&T unlocked) and my battery is draining way to much energy.
I looked over the internet and I think it might help if I change my plateform.
So I'd like to root the cellphone but I cannot figure out step by step how to do it.
After rooting, I wonder if it would help to upgrade to marshmallow or nougat without all the draining useless apps from AT&T.
I saw some post about it but I don't know how to use Odin, how to downgrade to android 4 to root or anything else for that matter.
I'm kind of desperate.

The bootloader on this phone is locked and cannot run a custom ROM unless the custom ROM is based on a stock Samsung ROM.
How old is the battery? When did this start happening?

You are on a obsolete, dying platform. Your best solution is acquire a new device, if not new at least recent enough to run contemporary software. The latest stock ROM for the Note 3 is several generations behind, and will not be updated. Since many of the later apps no long run on that ROM, or at least not to their full capability, the best answer is get a replacement.
But don't discard your Note 3. Within limitations it is still a beast. Use it to learn about ROMs, apps, etc. You are obviously a smart guy because you know where to look for answers. All you need do is look a bit deeper. All the answers you need are on this forum. Start by reading about SafeStrap, rooting exploits, and custom ROMs. READ, READ, then READ some more. Once you're confident, and have all the tools at your disposal, then start experimenting with your Note 3.

In tons of forum post that I read so far (as a newbie), this was the most satisfying one ty so much! I'm struggling for 10 days to install a brillant custom rom (ie lineage ) i have only come to try with boot with safestrap recovery and error with it till now.
I gave up tired and the only thing i dont want is a brilliant Rom no longer, it's just an unheated battery.
