Droid bionic has a max 32 gb external sdcard limitation. is this a hardware or software limitation?
thinking if it was software, could I create 2 partitions on 64gb card and mount extra partition in vold.fstab as usb1 or sdcard-ext2 or something?

I do not know if this helps or not but my Samsung Precedent is supposed to have a 16gb SDcard limitation but I have a 32gb card in it and it reads it as such. AlI I can say is stick the card in and see what happens. Once I get my Bionic up and running I plan on moving the card to from phone to phone. Good Luck and hope it works.

Is the OS JellyBean?
is the card formatted exfat or fat32?
Is it class 6 or class 10?

Note: reason I'm asking is I have been reading problems with class 10 micros SD drawing too much power and exfat not being recognized with usb thumb drives and I wasn't sure if that carried over to the Micro sd card(for those with a y cable, an OTG cable, and powered hub)
Software problem only, reformat the card as fat32, your phone will ask to do this, and it will work fine.
Been using my sandisk 64gb card for a year without issue in my Droid 3 and now on my Bionic.

I broke down and bought a sandisk 64gb micro sdxc
picked up a sandisk 64gb sdxc class 10 from best buy for $35 yesterday.\
It would not read in my bionic because it is formatted exfat file system. Android no like. ext2 or fat32 is preferred if your a windows user def fat32.. problem with formatting anything that large using windows is you need utils found here.

that diddn't work for me so I used easeus partition manager to delete partition on card and create a primary (not extended) partition that was unformatted. I then used the fat32format.exe from the link above to format the card all of which was done in windows xp
working now.
I'm sure there are some things here that are not neccessary but this is what worked for me after a few failed attempts.
do not copy files form your old card until you put a couple files on the new card and test it. you will just end up wasting your time when it doesn't work and you have to reformat it again or repartition it again and copy..... again. I copied 29g to the card like 3 times. lol.

64gb MicroSDXC is 30$ on Amazon (US).
I got one and it is working flawlessly in my bionic. I was running CM11 at the time, but have jumped a couple of ROMs since then.
I copied all files off of my old card to PC (using the card slot), formatted the new card IN MY PHONE, then copied the files on to the new cardPure success. No errors or anything.
Just my experience though! Bionic isn't supposed to handle 64gb cards, but mine did just fine.

To use link2SD yes 4.3 Supports it I think
Actually I am 4.2 and tried Ext3 didn't work but Ext2 and Fat32 Work fine

All cards 32gb or less (SDHC cards) come formatted in Fat32.(Part of SDHC spec) This includes a file limit of 4gb max for a single file.
All cards 64gb or more (SDXC cards which the XZR supports) come preformatted in exFat (Part of SDXC spec). This does not have a 4gb file limitation.
The stock Sony Firmware supports exFat. (I bought a 64gb SDXD formatted with exFat and plugged it in and worked right away). Most recoveries do to. (TWRP does at least).
However, I flashed CM11 onto my XZR. CM11 does _NOT_ support exFat. Initially I backed up and reformatted my card in Fat32. Angry with the 4gb file limitation (I have many 720p and 1080p movies over 4gb..) I actually took the microSD card out, used a adapter and hooked it up to a Linux system (Ubuntu 13.10 in my case) and used gParted to format the card to EXT4 filesystem. EXT4 is a filesystem most Linux machines use and support natively. This is actually the filesystem most newer Android device use for their internal SDCard / Data partitions! I popped the card back in, CM11 reads it perfectly! And I was able to copy files over 4gb to the device!
So its not a hardware thing since the XZR is SDXC compatible. Just formatting / partition time issue.

If you used to using Linux PC / Laptop, then best system file is ext4. Since Z1 didn't support NTFS regarding lack of kernel features (hopefully doomlord will add this on next build), then ext4 is the best choice.
But if you using Windows, FAT32 is your choice. But you can't copy a single file which larger than 4 GB (this is the lack of fat32), beside that fat32 can only formating a disk which not bigger than 32gb. In this case, you can create two or more partitions for your 64gb sdcard.

Do not mess up with partitions if you will not use some kind of installations where EXT4 is needed. 64GB SDXC have natively extFAT as primary Partition and its supported by Z1, best choice and performance, also it support more than 4GB per file.

With what Partition System did you formatted your SD last time? Minitool Home Edition I think do not support exFAT. I remember Windows 7 can do that and it will let you formatting the card in exFAT with 32k cluster size. If you can't try to find an application to do so.

Ok, just thought I'd ask as I get the option in my recovery. I've never used it but I assumed it would allow you to choose the filesystem to format.
It would be nice though
I'd say you should your xperia take care about formatting:
Aslong as its in your device it shouldn't matter what format the card has. In mtp -mode your xperia acts like a reader/writer. It also updates your file index by this method.
If you're using it as a external SD card you should use whatever suits your os.
Ext4 would be okay since there are open source free writers/readers available for Windows.
Still, any changes need the media scanner to run before your Android recognize the files

I have 64GB SDXC and out of box is exFAT and I insered the card in my Z1 and it recognize exFAT very well. If you formatted the card with a wrong program you can compromise your partition system, that is why the Z1 do not recognize your card anymore after formatting. Try again to get the best from SDXC.

I have a similar card (mine is a sandisk extreme 64GB UHS-I/U3). When I got it it was formatted as EXFAT. Windows would not reformat to FAT32 because of size (it would start, then fail. Oh Windows...). I plugged the card into my phone and the phone offered to format it. I said yes and it formatted to FAT32 it in a few seconds. It has been working fine ever since (about a month). So yes, the phone will format it fine.

Windows is only capable of formatting fat32 with max partition size of 32GB.
That restriction was introduced to force the use of NTFS.
You can use EaseUS Partition Master for partition size higher than 32GB.
Brand New SDXC UHS-I class 10 16gb SD Card not detected on my Nokia 2.1 but my computer detects it when I used the sd card adapter, I tried formatting to exFAT but I still got thesame result. help guys!!!!!! Even my SDHD class 4 32gb sd card worked, why not that. someone pls help me out!!!

You should give that a try. I'm sure exFAT is not suppprted, even in more expensive phones from Nokia.
