My sister's boyfriend gave me his Tilt because he bought a Blackberry. Long story, he broke the first Tilt, they replaced it for him and he broke it again and he was told it would cost $500 to repair... so he bought the new phone and gave me the Tilt for free. So here's the deal: it will charge and turn on.. but only stays on for a few seconds. The LCD is cracked... pretty obvious. However, I was wondering if there was another problem since the phone won't stay on or if it's typical for it to turn off with just a broken screen. This is basically the sequence of events:
Hit the power button, a green LED on the left of the ear piece lights up and the phone vibrates for a second.
The screen then lights up but doesn't display anything obviously... other then the black liquid and white back lighting.
The screen stays on for about 15 seconds, shuts off, the keyboard lights up for a VERY quick second and then that's it... nothing else.
I'm wondering if I should try and find a replacement screen or if there is something else wrong with it. I saw the screen on phoneystore.com a while back but the site has said it's down for maintenance every other time I checked.
Other Info - I took the back cover off and above and slightly to the right of the camera is a black dot that says "VOID".
Any help is appreciated.

Normally you only get the vibrate if you are turning on from the completely off position.
From the completely off position you have to long press the on/off button - is this what you are doing?
In any case, it's difficult to tell if there are any other problems. You could try tracking down on this site, one of thoses applications that lets you see / control the device from your PC.
That $500 figure is I assume for someone to do the repair for you, 'osc the screen would not cost anything like that.

Also that "void" dot you see I think is just over a screw and if you go inside your tilt you'd have to poke through that and it would void your warranty. So thats not because the screen is broken.
well, i don't have to hold it long before the green LED comes on and the phone vibrates... then the screen shuts off and i have to turn it back on again. it doesn't seem like it's staying on.
the $500 was from AT&T to have them fix it... so yes.
and thanks for the reply on the "VOID" - i thought it maybe had something to do with water damage or the cracked screen.
Have you tried turning it on with the wall charger plugged in? I thought I had seen my sons just shut down like that when his battery was pretty much dead and I was trying to turn it on.
Well, i was bored waiting for work this morning so i decided to put the SIM from my phone into the Tilt... I turned it on with my SIM in and it stayed on for longer... then I heard a little tick and kind of "whooosh" sound which I'm assuming is the start-up sound. Then nothing for a few seconds... then there is this "kerplunk" noise.. then the amber LED on the left of the ear piece starts flashing and then the phone starts vibrating and making a high pitch ring... the vibrating seems to be in a patter. Then I hear what sounds like it may be a shutdown noise and the phone is off again. However, the back light on the screen remained on the entire time. It might that with the SIM in it works, but the battery is dead so it turns right off? I have the wall charger here somewhere so I will have to try that after work. I will let you know the results.
most likely the sounds that your hearing are just an alarm clock going off. my guess is that the screen is the only thing that is really damaged. you can look online at ebay and get replacement screens with the tools necessary to replace the screen for under 100 bucks. i think that would be a good deal for you... keep us updated on the status
if possible if you are going to replace the screen from ebay you should take piectures. it would make a very nice guide for the noobs
yeah... i will definitely take pictures when i do it. i hope it's just the screen. i don't know why it won't stay on tho... i'm still trying to find the charger for it. i don't remember where i put it. i will keep you posted tho.
You can charge it with any USB mini type B lead plugged into a PC. You probably have one somewhere for a camera or other phone.
Don't be fooled by the shape of the socket on the bottom of the phone, it still fits.

good news tho.. the phone now stays on and i am able to receive phone calls. i found a screen w/ tools for $70 shipped on e-bay. i want to try what you mentioned mike, hook it up to the pc. i just want to make sure everything seems okay before i buy a screen.

okay... so i put the new LCD in and it works.. to an extent. it displays the at&t splash screen, then the 3G animation, then gets to the windows mobile 6.0 splash screen and it hangs there for a few seconds then shuts off. i thought maybe it needed a new battery because it wouldn't stay on before so i ran to the store and got one and it's charging now. i'm going to wait a few hours and try again...
when i try and turn the phone on when it's plugged into the charger it seems to hang on the at&t screen... this doesn't seem normal.
also, when it's not plugged in and goes through the screens, on the at&T screen it looks like it's showing RGB values or something in red text in the bottom right corner of the screen. is this normal?

The RGD values in RED are normal (info about radio version etc) if you are starting from the off position or have just done a soft reset.
I'm not sure why it is hanging at the point it does. I am assuming you have done a hard reset? (you may have said - but I have not read back all the posts)

i was able to get it to get past the windows mobile 6.0 splash screen but it says 6 new notifications/alarms, then starts buzzing and ringing and turns off. one time it said battery was critically low or something. i want to assume that it is charging because the amber LED comes on.. but who knows. i would hate to have to give up at this point.

Actually that all sounds pretty normal. Yes expect to get a whole bunch of notifications that have accumulated and never been cancelled. When they come up try to cancel them quickly - just choose dismiss. Don't be surprised if there are so many that it crashes the device and you have to re-start possibly several times until eventually you get past all those notifications!! This also happens when you restore a backup - I have seen my device go absolutely bananas with many many notifications and a crash is not unexpected.
If the battery is not charged give it a good hour of charging before trying again. One thing that puzzles me is that if you have the amber light that shows charging (good) then why does it give you a message saying battery low?? Normally you will never get that notification whilst on charge.

thanks for the replies. i was able to dismiss a few of them earlier and then the battery message came up and the phone turned off. it wasn't plugged in at the time. however, i left for the day and left it plugged in for probably 7 hours or more...turned completely off...and i came home and it got past the windows splash screen again and then said the main battery was critically low and turned off. can't get it to stay on now. i'm lost...
it seems like my only other option is to try a new charger.. but if the LED comes on it would seem as though it is working. i checked all of the contacts where the battery goes and like i said earlier, i bought a new battery this morning. i really don't want to take it apart again. while it was apart i did my best to clean the any dust or other build-up. i guess i could try and charge it on the computer.
my phone does the same thing I accidently dunked about an inch of it the top of the phone into a cup, thought it was ok after i let it dry off and it would boot up but I still can't get the phone to really charge, the orange light will go on but the battery never charges and I used to get the red critical battery warning. Ive tried a bunch of different chargers but still nothing just gets to the second splash screen in duttys rom and turns off now. Hopefully you can get your up though, just wish i could get 30 minutes of battery to get it back to stock rom and everything so i could send it back as the bottom never got wet and the water check under the battery is still white.
Mmmm. Well sounds like there is a hardware charging problem. Pity you don't have one of those chargers where you can dock a spare battery to charge it up. It would be a hassle though if that's the only way to charge the battery. There are ways to charge the battery by wiring the battery directly to a set of AA batteries or a charger, but that would not solve the problem in the long run.
There are companies that will replace the USB connection on the M/board but that would be to assume that is where the fault is - and I'm not convinced it is. The fact that the orange charge LED comes on suggests the USB connection may be ok and that it may be the battery connection block that has a broken connection. This is not easy to repair if at all. I have seen one reported case where that block with the gold connectors had broken connections and a repair company could not resolder all the connections.
One thing to try regarding the battery connector block. With the luck of the Gods it might just be that one or more pins is not making a good batter contact. Try cleaning the pins and battery contacts. (A bit of a forlorn hope though)

well, good news!
i left it plugged into the computer all night and turned it on this morning and it went through all of the alarms... i dismissed them all. it then stayed on!!! so i went to the system settings and looked at the battery life and it said it was at 100%. perhaps it was the charger... which would be odd. now when it's plugged into the PC the amber LED comes on for a second then switches to green. i'm going to try and use it for the day and make sure i can turn it on and off without any problems. the AT&T store is closed here today so i'll have to get a charger one day during the week. i will post back at the end of the day.
I got my Nexus 7 at I/O this year and I've been happily using it for nearly a month now. I don't know if my device differs in any way from one you can get form google play other than the white back.
Last night I was plugged into my wall charger at around 14% battery and playing SongPop with my girlfriend when my screen just shut off. It was like when you hold the power button on a laptop and BOOM, everything is black. It wouldn't turn back on so I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Got a charging screen so I let it set for a bit.
I came back maybe 15 minutes later and I was at 9% battery, which was odd given I plugged into the wall at 14%. I played with the phone for maybe 30s after boot and it happened again, I saw some weird artifacts on the black screen as it quickly shut off and the speakers played an awful crackly screeching noise. Plugged it in again, came back a bit later, still at 9% and played with the device again, same issue only after a little more time.
I'm currently at work with my N7 plugged into my Galaxy Tab 10.1 charger and charging it from 0 to 16% currently. The device is on but I haven't been touching it (and I don't plan to until it's at 100%).
Has anyone else had this issue?
I cant tell if it's some way I'm touching the device that's causing it to shut down hard, some issue with the battery or charging that is causing a rapid battery drop or even a short in the way I'm holding it when it's plugged into the charger?
I don't really want to deal with ASUS warranty returns already, though I have been unable to find anyone else with the same issue through google, so I turn to you for advice and similar stories.
Mine did the same thing the second day I had it. Now it won't boot. I'm waiting for Google to send me a new one.

Mine did something similar last night. It was at about 6% battery charge and all of a sudden the screen just went black. I went and plugged it in, but it wouldn't power on completely (the screen was on but there was nothing there). I started seeing really thin, small green lines running down the screen. I turned it off and on a couple of times, and finally it booted up. I left it plugged in for awhile, and I just took it out at work to use a bit and everything seems perfectly fine. I wonder if there are some firmware issues with the power management or something. I was all set to put in a return with Google, but it appears to be okay. I'll keep a close eye on it for the next couple of days (I've only had it for a week).

After leaving mine off and charging at work to 100% it seems to be working fine. I used it all last night with no issues. I haven't tried wiggling around the usb cable yet in the port to see if that caused any issues.
Firmware issues sounds about right, some sort of low battery safety feature or something? Who knows. I'll update this thread if I continue to experience problems. I'm already past my ability to return to Google so I'm in no rush to warranty to Asus and lose a development tablet.
ok so i know what im doing and pretty sure i know what happened hehe well my phone started acting up and no one could hear me on otherside so i flashed back to arhd 52 and it booted up fine i restored to original firmware for 52 everything was fine besides mic quality . so i blew in their and dug around with a paper clip in little hole next to usb port never stuck it in usb port. just tiny mic hole . Fixed it my phone was working perfectly
call quality and everything was tired so went to bed and figured id restore today. well when i woke up to my suprise my phone as blinking red with screen off power button just brought up a screen with empty battery symbol and lightning bolt in middle with red led flashing at top left. phone will not respond no bootloader nothing. i did get it to bootloader and recovery twrp a couple times but it just restarted both bootloader and recovery before i could do anything. im pretty sure my battery crapped out or i messed something up with the paper clip inside but i doubt that as i just put it in mic i think battery is DONE and im gonna have to get a new phone. pretty sad since when do batteries only last a year ? oh well got 70 days warranty left just didnt want to lose my stuff if you guys know how to fix this problem of phone not holding charge being able to do anything but show me blank battery and red flashing light. your help will be greatly appreciated. i can have replacement tuesday and have 14 days to send mine in but i would like to get my files off and apps if possible why do i have to have such bad luck lol i had to send this one in 3 times to get camera fixed just to have this happen ?

did you try plugging it into the charger? (you didnt mention that you tried charging it). Plug it in, wait 10 minutes and see if the red light goes on. If it does, leave it plugged in.
Since you cant do anything with it anyways, just let it sit on the charger for a couple of days to be honest. Ive heard of people having issues where their phone completely dies and then it randomly starts up again after a couple of days on the charger.
Also, did you happen to drop it when the issue occured?

didnt drop it. mic started making noise tried an older rom to see if it was the mic itself or hardware. it was mic. so i left phone alone left it on put on charger when i woke up flashing red light wouldnt boot. i have roms on their i can re flash im guessing something went wrong with the rom i flashed after i set phone down for night. or my other theory is when i was trying to get mic to work which i did i broke something lose inside that goes from usb to battery ? is that possible i did stick a paper clip in the mic hole only ? hope it wasnt me they might make me pay for that vs if battery crapped out i should get a free one as im under a year

i really dont see how sticking a paperclip in the mic hole would cause the battery issue, yea its possible you punctured the mic but it shouldnt effect battery in any way. Im guessing its just a coincidental issue, unless you somehow punctured the battery..but that seems unlikely.
Yea just leave the phone alone for a bit, and call up htc and see what theyre willing to do (price, how long itll take) so you have an idea of what you want to do next.
One thing i would try is holding the power and both volume buttons down while shining a bright light into the light sensor (on the top left of the front of the device)
There a multiple cases where Z3 Compact suddenly off, and then cannot be boot at all (with any mean available). It randomly can be boot, in my case i charged it a long time (approximately one night), then i saw the LED lights lit hence the successful boot. But 5 minutes later, poof, it die again and cannot be boot. I plugged back to the charger, no LED light or respond whatsoever.
The second time i able to boot it, i reflash the stock rom using the PC Companion repair section. But the problem persist, which hint me that this is maybe a hardware problem. I found in the sony forum that the motherboard or the battery could be fail, OR the battery was too low to lit the LED light during charging (which seem illogical for my case which the phone dead with 100% battery).
In the end i sent it to the service center and the phone not currently held up in a ward for god know how long. The friendly assistant at the service center suggested the board or the battery were failed since the phone didn't respond with charging and reset charging.
Any comment from you guys about the possibility of board and battery failure will be appreciated

Well my Z3C used to be softbricked like you. Meaniez had post my thread about it right above.
The reason for this was the unrespond battery. In my case, I charged it for about 3->4hrs, started at 17%. Then it suddenly softbricked, plugged it to PC, the logo Xperia appeared, but it still remained the same. I took it to the store, their technicians found out that the battery wasn't gone at all, it was hibernate. So they charged it with high-voltage electric for hours, then it came back to life, just like we do the electric shock to save people.
I think my case will help you with a solution to safe your phone.

Well, in your case, the phone responded when connected to PC. Mine didn't respond at all. Thanks though for your information.

I am French, exact same thing happened to me last night (didnt boot, plugged it, pressed power/vol+, booted with red light blinking and when on lockscreen restarted automatically and did the same thing again in a loop, then stopped responding at all. Plugged it for the night, green light this morning. Unplugged, didnt boot. Waited, plugged it again, this time it booted up, and it's still working fine. Did a factory reset and erased my data in case I have to send it to repair. It's such a shame, I love this little phone.
I think I'm done. Sick with having to go to the centre, sick with their crappy excuses and most importantly sick with all the 'bad batch' problems - Glass cracked, Flap covers, and worst of all, sudden death? Gosh that's crazy. Btw I am from Malaysia and my phone last night have just officially been infected with the sudden death problem for no reason. I am pretty confident that even if they swap my phone with a new one, that would also be from the bad batch.
But again, this is just me. I hope yours would be much better because overall the phone is actually quite good given the size. Cheers

My internal nand was pretty full (got the warning several time). Eventually, the screen turned black one day and the phone wouldnt turn back on, even with
- reboot power/volume combo
- reset button behind the flap (30s+)
- charger connected/disconnected with same buttons
Leaving the phone there for a day or two (trying to boot it every now and then with the power button...), eventually it works/boots for some magical reason. Then it goes black again for a day or two, sometimes quickly, sometimes not. I did that a few times over several days...
Eventually when I got it to boot again I directly did a factory reset. This does not clean the internal sdcard. Things worked for a week straight (ie longer than usual) and bang, black screen again, and again and again...
So when I got it to boot once again (yes, that's PAINFUL to test all this) I did a factory reset + wipe of the internal sdcard.
Since that day, no more black screen of death.
I therefore suspect there's a bug with the nand controller when its nearly full or is full, or there's a bug plus bad nand hardware that causes it. I'm a little clueless on why it can eventually reboot.
I tested this 20, 30 times just to be certain, and it really seems related. So now I'm curious, any of you with the problem had the internal nand nearly full ? (or above 75% full at least). If so, try to boot the phone again a bit later and remove files from the sdcard just to see.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but a colleague of mine just contacted me about the same issue - phone rebooted and remains dead.
I have not yet had a chance to look into the phone itself, but according to him the internal storage would be full up to a few MB, which would explain the issue based on your investigation.
Will look into it further...

They didn't told me what was the problem, but I think they replaced the motherboard.

FYI: Here's the report I received from them.
Well, bad news I guess... I tried whatever I could possibly think of, but the best I get is a steady red LED for some time, after that the LED turns off again and still no reaction at all (also while the LED is lit).
From what I can tell, it's most likely a battery issue, because when the red LED first lights up, it's kind of a flickering, which is why I assume the voltage is just too low to do anything.
We'll see what Sony's gonna tell us after they got the device for repair
This just happened to me. For my exp, we have this problem when we charge with the magnetic cable. Correct me if I am wrong.

Have you tried upgrading to 5.1.1 (23.4.A.0.546)? I had the same problem, where my z3c would only last an hour or so until the next sudden death and I'd have to wait a few days before being able to turn it on again (and will die after another hour).
Since I upgraded, it has only happened a couple times, and even then I could immediately turn it back on. While it's not a complete solution for me, at least my phone is usable now.

Well, This sudden death phenomenon happened to me as well this weekend, without any prior warning, since the phone is just 5 weeks old. I tried every possible fix suggested on the web, no response at all.
Now the phone has been shipped to a service centre in Athens, Greece, 350 km from where I live. Ought to have an update on phone;s status in approx. 10 days I was told. I keep my fingers crossed... From what I've read searching this matter during these past days, it seems more like a hardware issue (i.e. defective motherboard). If that's true, and since this phenomenon tends to grow steadily like an epidemic all around the globe (first SE Asia, now Europe) than it is a disgrace for SONY not to organize a recall...
Same issue here. Started few times and then hard brick. No flash mode, no fast boot, no charging... The girl from Sony support, after I've told her that i have an issue reported by many user on their support forums told me not to believe everything I see on the internet . I've been a Sony fan for many years but this denial of a manufacturing fault will make me reconsider...
This has been happening to me regularly now. The only way to get it to boot is to leave it on a charger for an hour or two. After an hour it will say it's charging again. Once it shows that it's charging, you can power it on. Pretty annoying, especially because when this happens to me, the battery will usually be over 90% full.

So when I got it to boot once again (yes, that's PAINFUL to test all this) I did a factory reset + wipe of the internal sdcard.
Since that day, no more black screen of death.
I therefore suspect there's a bug with the nand controller when its nearly full or is full, or there's a bug plus bad nand hardware that causes it. I'm a little clueless on why it can eventually reboot.
I tested this 20, 30 times just to be certain, and it really seems related. So now I'm curious, any of you with the problem had the internal nand nearly full ? (or above 75% full at least). If so, try to boot the phone again a bit later and remove files from the sdcard just to see.

My internal and external storage are both only half full and the sudden death bug continues to happen. Not sure it's related to storage. I've noticed that it only happens to me when the phone is sleeping with the screen off. I know sony did a lot of work to get the phone to use very little power when idle. Maybe it's related to the phone not being able to wake up? Does anyone know if this happens with non-stock ROMS as well?

Started happening to me a couple of weeks ago. Currently on SlimRom 4.4 and have been using this ROM for about a year now.
I was actually about to reflash a stock ROM until I saw this thread and now I don't know. Might have to call Sony.
Hi everyone, yesterday I used NeMa's battery calibration to reset the batterystats on my Xperia Z3 Compact running the latest Cyanogenmod. I had done it when the phone was charged at 100% and noticed that the battery instantly dipped to 99% afterwards. I took note but I wasn't worried at the time. Last night I left the phone on its charging dock and slept for about 5 hours and 30 minutes. When I woke up I picked up the phone and noticed it was hot. The screen was fine at the time so I checked the battery percentage, saying it was stuck at 99% which leaves me to believe that the battery was stuck in a charging loop from a bad calibration. I texted someone and also noticed that the Swype keyboard was laggy and unresponsive, but with my lock password, etc. it seemed to be fine.
I powered the phone down and slowly tried to dissipate heat with warm water and later colder water. When I tried to power the phone on, it had shown normal booting until the end when the screen gave out. Currently, it will show normal LED lights up top and calls will still register, but the screen is dark and doesn't seem to have promising digitizer input because I can't answer the call even though I know where to touch the screen to answer it.
Has this happened to anyone? This is my first encounter dealing with this. Any fixes (screen response or proper calibration), or would I just have to get it repaired?

only 2 ways to find out if the screen is working or not working at all
a) a very dark place... start the phone.. maybe the screen is not iluminted proprey ! and maybe the screen is visible ...but very limited.
b) buy a mhl to hdmi cable.. to connect from phone to a smartv.
And see if the touch respons.. if yes the only the screen i out.. if not the screen +touch is out ( dead)
Yeah the screen and digitizer are fried. I'm going to try and return it to the seller stating a defective battery. Has this happened to anyone else? I just need to know if there are any fixes to this if I were to get the same phone.
