Video calling - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It was announced that Note 5 will get native video calling . I wonder if our Notes will get that feature too?
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app

I am also wondering about this. Or company users all t-mobile phones and it would be neat to video chat with each other.

The Tmobile Note 5 and S6 Edge+ both already have Video Calling.
We just got a BOH4 firmware update a couple days ago which included native video calling.
Have a great evening!

Seriously? We haven't even got the 5.1.1 update still. Keep dreaming if you think Samsung gives a crap about us Note 4 users now that they have the iPhone-esque Note 5 and are wanting all iPhone users to switch to the Note 5.
Whats worse, my girlfriends S6 Edge just updated for video calling and ALL of her icons are now "iPhone-esque" as well, with no way to change them back from what I can see. I am seriously over Samsung with their actions this year. I bought the Note 4 because I DIDN'T want an iPhone! Stop trying to copy them. Seriously. Just STOP!
And before you ask, yes, imad.
</rant>

So no video calling at least until 5.1.1 update. ?

Nova Prime. Make your launcher look the way you want it.

I know about all the launchers but it's the fact that Samsung has completely lost focus of the market they have and are now only caring about the iPhone and the people that use them and it sucks when you finally find a great phone and company and they completely do a 180 and start doing all the things you hated about the competition in the first place.

She can change those icons to whatever she wants through the theme store! There's pretty much anything you can think of in there and plenty of them are free!

Aha yes my first thought as well...however this seems to be a system wide change that even changing themes will not change back. All of the icons are now "bubbled" like the iPhone. Unfortunately changing themes does not change them back :/

Bump. ???

I'd rather use Hangouts.

hangouts is crap... google infested crap

everyone has to remember, once Samsung comes out with a new phone, they forget about the previous model, for ex. Note 5 just came out, Note 4 will probably get 1 or 2 updates then its forgotten about....
they been doing that for years, just like HTC, I had just about all the HTC models starting from there first HTC T-Mobile Dash (windows phone) all the way upto the M7... and then I stopped supporting HTC, and this will be my last Samsung phone, I had the S2, S3, NOTE 2, NOTE 3, NOTE 4, and I refused to buy the Note 5....
I bought my 2nd Note 4 less than a month ago, I have my wife my Note 4 and purchased this and Moving on passed SAMSUNG,
If I have to, I will just buy freaking flip phones if I have to, all these smartphone companies come out with a new phone and forget about updating there older models...
I REALLY HATE APPLE STUFF, but one thing I do notice is that they update there devices for the older models with there updates, which is a shame that android phones don't except one.... GOOGLE PHONES.... like NEXUS devices get the updates... well will see what happens....
just frustrated with these companies selling there phones expensive and not support them after you purchase them... they make sooooo muchhhhh money for a device that is really worth less than $200 to make.... we all fall into this hype and make all the executives way to rich....
one way is to just stop buy them....

For myself video calling has never been a must have and when needed I use Skype. At the end I rather have my sd slot than native video calling. Besides its just a matter of time before one of our talented developers add it or more to their roms. Themes and Icons will always be one more reason why Android is better than IOS, in my honest opinion of course.

Well just in case anyone noticed or not, we got video calling on the Note 4 and it works. After 5.1.1 update.
Pp.

Yep, we got it with the 5.1.1 update. Meanwhile, I have no friends on Tmobile with a capable phone.

Just ordered the wife a N4 to replace her N3 so we'll see how it works shortly.

My wife and I both have Note 4s and the video calling is AWESOME! Its fast and responsive. It has really come a long way. Qik was my first experience ever with vcalling. Hangouts was slow. I'm impressed by this new video calling.

Nexus 4 vs Galaxy s3

I had to do it.. It was needed specially after the iphone 5 comparison video I got a lot of pms and requests so I had both of them at home and said..why not?
Remember..this is not stock vs stock, however a ROM'd s3 but for the purpose of the video I think it works just fine
Well enjoy

Galaxy s3 is for a general population who are inclined to buy stuff form ads but have no idea what an Android is.

SO DAMN TRUE!!!
And you see people saying oh look how fast it is, and the previous device was a nokia with flashlight or an iphone
WTH! -_-
For my two pence worth I had the s3 went back to my gnex awaiting the n4. I love just stock. Also I agree with the comment above about going back to operator logos on handsets. Its hideous. I know why they do it but its horrid. As for the s3 it was very very fast and more than enough for most but after 4 months of use and adding all my stuff to the device it did slow a bit. Not a huge amount by any means but for hard core users it was there plus I couldn't live with the dismal redraw issue when coming out of apps yo the home screen . I know the Gnex is far from perfect but besides battery life I would have the Gnex as my every day phone anytime. So I decided to go for the n4 as my main phone for the next year as it should perform just the same but look better and have a bit more use with the bigger battery although I know tests don't show it being much better. A little would do me. Anyway awesome video and thank you for taking the time to do it

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. For a user like myself in the states, the lack of LTE was the deciding factor for me between the GSIII and N4. I wouldn't call myself general population and I know what Android is, lol.

Galaxy series is brilliant, but touchwiz is a piece of shyte next to stock android. Also there's no substitute for getting updates on time.
The Nex 4 looks nice, but not having a removable battery like my old EvoLTE and only having 16GB of storage without the ability to upgrade are killers for me. The GS3 development community is Legit as well. I only have 4GB left on my microSD and 3GB left on my onboard 16GB GS3. The battery and storage issues are a Fail IMHO for the Nex4. There is no way I could use it as my everyday camera, video recorder, offline music player, and document storage device. Also, when traveling out of town, you realize how much having extra batteries around makes things a whole lot easier, especially when you are using your phone as a GPS and listening to your offline music on flights (I did have the mobile battery juice device when I had the EvoLTE but it really didn't help).
I use Nova Launcher and HD Widgets so no need for TouchWiz. I will say the Sense and TouchWiz Calendar and Appointments look and function way better than the stock Android Calendar.

That is truly one of the most ignorant statements I've seen on xda in quite some time...and there have been a bunch lately. Besides having more storage, LTE, removable battery, nicer camera and more options...yea, I'll stick with my "general population" phone...Lol. I had the Galaxy Nexus for a while and just left the One X for the Note 2 (similar to the S3...that's why I chimed in)...the first thing I do with any of my Android phones (this is my 6th) is change to Nova Launcher...so while pure Android had it's advantages a year or more ago, that is far from the case now with the heavy duty processors being offered in combination with these launchers. I have debloated my phone, run Nova and also have all the little motion gadgets that are actually useful that are not options on pure Google. It's nice to be able to call someone within a text conversation just by putting the phone to your face or to have the screen automatically stay on as long as you're looking at it. These are features that I actually consider highly useful in the real world. Flame away, but with today's processing power and Samsung's openness to bootloader unlocking and dev community, I actually consider pure Google to be a step backwards FOR ME.
Glad that you guys are starting to get your phones though. I canceled after I received the bo email.

I got a SGH-I747 from Telus. Paid $0 for it.
It's "only" a dual core, but it has 2 gigs of RAM. And not a single logo on the front.
I'm running CM10 on it. With the 4.2 keyboard and camera/gallery. So maybe I don't know what Android is all about.
I might still get a N4 if Google ever allows me to buy one. But for now, I'm enjoying my S3 very much.
I can't wait for my n4 please please let it arrive this week!!

I love my Nexus and exclusively buy Nexus brand phones ever since the Nexus S, but I wouldn't call the GS3 just a device for the general consumer. Its component sheet is very good and is still considered a high end phone several months after its release. It does have some good dev support (though Samsung could be a lot more helpful with getting more info about their processors out there) and considering many chose that device after the Galaxy Nexus failed to impress when it was finally announced. Personally I prefer stock Android but there are a couple features I wouldn't mind cherrypicking from the S3 like screenshots, tap to top, and not having the screen go to sleep when you're looking at it. Having sais that, the phone I chose is definately the right one for me and I belive it to be superior to the S3. Also it will be supported longer than the S3 from Google and the dev community.

i have played around with my friend's Note 2 for a whole day and i decided to install Nova to see if stock Android isn't worth it anymore. it turns out it is. Nova + Touchwiz was not as stable or fast (by that i mean touch responsiveness) as my Galaxy Nexus. i wanted to believe it since i am paying almost as much for the Nexus 4 and i really appreciate the Note 2's battery but i just wasn't convinced.
Hmmm... I've sold my SGS2 and waited for N4 but.... SOLD OUT...
This gave me more time to think about and I've realized that getting N4 was like step back to me.. Didn't want to end up like all iPhone users... Easy to break glass all around, very limited storage and non-removable battery.. I'm Not saying N4 is bad but it's Not perfect... (to me not even close to perfect...)
Android Support will be better for N4 and the Hardware is slightly better but I'm very happy with what I've got. It runs super smooth, using GO launcher, 2GB RAM makes a huge difference comparing to S3 tho.
To me GT-I9305 FTW

Will the Gear get ROMs? Use with other phones?

I know it's VERY early, but that 30% discount at Tmobile is tempting me. But I don't plan on getting a Note 3 or a S4. Currently I'm very happy with my LG G2, although I am considering swapping out to a Nexus 5 depending on what that ends up being.
Anyway I'm trying to find a use for the Gear without a S4/N3. Is there ANY functionality that would prove useful just running it by itself?
Do you guys anticipate any ROMs released in the future to have it work with other Android phones, or just to add stand alone functionality to it? Or is it a totally closed system and hopeless?
Right now it's an n3 or nothing. Have not heard of any roms really

Right now without a compatible device to pair it to you can't even use it as a watch, as the pairing process is what sets the time etc, and there is no way to bypass the screen instructing you to pair it with your device. After it's paired it will function as a watch, camera and pedometer without being connected to the phone but that's about it. No idea on roms but I have heard Samsung will be releasing an SDK for developers to create apps for it.

Galaxy Gear 2

Say what? Already?
Built in Gps & 4Gb....why must they do this to early adopters (and so soon). I can't complain, mine was free with my Note 3, but I still feel a bit...meh.
"The Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will reportedly launch as an all-Android device which means you won't have to own either the Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3 or Galaxy S3.
According to Pocket-Lint, Samsung's next-generation Smart Watch will come sporting in-built GPS along with 4GB of onboard memory, it'll also come with running and music apps straight out of the box, something which the original Galaxy Gear was criticised for not having.
It's not clear whether Samsung will keep the same design as the original Galaxy Gear or whether the company will decide to make some changes there as well in light of the fact that it would work with any Android smartphone.
Whilst it may seem as though this is a very short turnaround for a company to be releasing an update it's actually something Samsung has plenty of practise at with the Galaxy range being constantly updated throughout the year."

we don't need that. galaxy gear is perfectly capable of running internet browser and navigation apps, it just need custom rom for that.
they need to update the software and get rid of touchwiz, it will never be usefull.
Galaxy range being constantly updated throughout the year.
say what? they barely make updates, and when they do they do not work properly leaving the user with broken software for MONTHS.
CES 2014 does not mean they will start selling it it the middle of January either.
I like two things,
A display that does not need to time out in 5 seconds
Double the battery life (even though the gear has great battery life now)
They better make the first gear, compatible with all phones so at least we can get some resale value.

Wow, only ordered one last night. Now question is, do I cancel and wait six months? Now I have typed it out in front of me I say hell no...
Why?
With the work that FOmey and others are doing, why go for 2.0. I have a browser, Nova Launcher, etc. Does far more than my Pebble and getting much more every day. This is what I bought mine for. Other than a few minor thing, it is doing more than I thought it could less than 6 weeks after release. I'm sure we will get TWRP or CWM soon, so we'll have all we need. The hardware is already great, so I'm enjoying it. I'll be buying 2.0 down the road, being a hardware junkie, but this has been so much fun already.

From what I read, the first great was to test the market. I was about to buy one but now I will wait a few months. It's hard to keep up with innovation and technology and Samsung is at the forefront. Very similar to what the did What the s3 to the s4.. I believe it was 9 months between them.

Touchwiz update for note 3 possible?

Do you think samsung will update touchwiz on the note 3 to be the same as on the gs5, or will they keep it exclusive to the gs5 and later to make you buy the new phone?
I've seen kitkat on the international version and it wasn't even a noticeable difference visuslly, so I'm hoping samsung will push an aesthetic update to touchwiz.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
If they think that making it exclusive to the S5 only to make anyone buy that phone, they are ridiculously stupid.
90% of current Samsung owners look at the S5 and laugh at how mediocre it actually is compared to older devices. They really didn't upgrade much and what is upgraded in miniscule at best. Not worth dropping the S4 or the Note 3 to get it.
Another thing is that TW sucks the fattest of asses. Most people would agree with me on that. The only class of devices it is good on is the Note series of phones and Tablets simply because of the S-Pen and it's features.
So... If they update it any time soon, it would be nice/won't matter for us on the Note series of devices. Any other device will probably fall under the don't matter/don't care side.
Sent from my SM-N9005A using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Oh yeah I definitely agree that I don't think it's a legit reason to upgrade. I have no intention of even considering it I would have just liked the visual overhaul of the settings app and the quick settings (I like color is the only reason). Also I like flip board so having an easier to access extra home screen for the magazine would have been better than swiping up and waiting for it to load. I will probably just use the regular flip board app though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
Oh I meant to add in that I see samsung being dumb enough to think making the new touchwiz exclusive is enough to make people upgrade. Take for example a heartbeat monitor thing... I run with my phone and I don't think this is something I need. But oh man its the next big thing!

Note 5, flip it or love it?

Hey XDA
Brief background, want to make this small post here.
Had the S4 for a year, actually enjoyed it for what it was worth, wanted out as soon as we knew for sure there was no root. Stock Touchwiz was just terrible on the 4.
I've never had the chance to own a Nexus device before, my carrier upgrades always came just before the Nexus devices were released, and I've been so ready to upgrade when it comes I jump on it.
This time around I stuck with my G3 for a while. I love this phone. I'm ready for new, and the phones coming out this year are not quite "notable"
I really have my eyes on the Nexus 6P - but US carriers not selling it means I have a decision to make. Got my dad the Note 4 earlier this year, he likes it. I like it the little bit I've played with it. I feel I could even use the Note 5 to replace my notebook in class for notes. ATT bootloader seems to be like the S4. Not much will come of bootloader unlocks with this phone.. It appears.
------
So I will upgrade through ATT, probably to the Note 5. Question is - stay with the Note 5 and learn to love it, despite the experiences I've had with Samsung, or flip it unopened on CL and order up the N6P....??
I really do not want a subpar camera to the G3, nor do I want a dull screen. Both devices seem on par, both no SD, battery not removable on the Note... Cameras both good..
Anyone here want the Nexus 6P?! Willing to get rid of your Note 5 for it?
The 6P looks sweet (literally and figuratively) but I'll never buy a smartphone with the Snapdragon 810. I already have a stove.
If i had a real need for a second phone, Nexus 6P will be my choice
I like Note5 as my main phone, S pen is really helpful, and makes you smart ?
Sent from my SM-N920C using Tapatalk
I see. Can anyone here tell me if it's valid to think you could completely replace a notebook and take notes in an 8 hour class day with the n5?

The phone hasn't even come out yet, wait until someone can review it. There are phones with the chip that heat up a lot, and some that don't heat at all.

I've had the Note 5 for a few weeks now, it is an excellent all-around Android phone.
I think the Nexus 6p looks great too, has pros and cons like any phone.
I think the Note 5 is the better all-around device and is the premier flagship Android phone of 2015.
I don't think you could sit and take notes for 8 hours on this phone. Lol. Maybe you could, maybe not. I would never want to do that.
The Nexus 6p is using the SnapDragon 810 version 2.1 - heat issues have "supposedly" been resolved on that version.
Some things to consider with AT&T:
1) You can't root but you can use Samsung Pay
2) Resale value on AT&T branded Samsung phones (Android in general) are lower than other models like T-Mobile, due to the locked bootloader, they usually sell for less/resale for less.
So I don't think you want to take a risk and purchase the phone from them, only to sell it for less.
Worst come to worst, try it out, they should give you 14 days to try it and return it. Something like that.

So I don't think you want to take a risk and purchase the phone from them, only to sell it for less.
Worst come to worst, try it out, they should give you 14 days to try it and return it. Something like that.

True and true. I may end up doing that. Will be end of this month or next, don't want to make a payment to pay off my G3, got 4 months left but they usually let you swap with 2 left.
I want to try the N5, the S6 edge has a brilliant screen but not for me.
I just really have my heart set on this N6P. If I don't like what I get with the Note5 I may return it for a iPhone6S and sell that on CL. Should get more $$$ for it. Overnight myself a N6P and I'll be good to go.

It depends if you want stock Android or not. That's all it really comes down to cause the Note 5 has everything else the 6P has for the most part.
I personally can't stand stock Android, so I'm sticking with the Note 5. Stock Android is insanely boring and featureless compared to Touchwiz. And the Note 5 has the S-Pen.

Indeed. That's true. I love vanilla Android. I wish the OnePlus 2 was a bit better... I'd sweep that in a heartbeat.
Touchwiz in my experience has been very Ram consuming and slow with the amazing hardware Samsung has brought to the table. It ruins the phone in my opinion. If course, the Note typically has better optimized software and useful features.
I lean more and more to the n6p every time I look at it. But again, ATT doesn't sell. Going to really suck

I agree, I think somewhere along the line, maybe around lollipop, I started to enjoy the touchwiz version more because of all the useful features built in to the OS.

I've had the Note 3, 4 and now 5. In my opinion, each iteration is slowly getting refined to be a better version compared to the last. If they keep this up, all the old stereotypes about touchwiz will eventually be obsolete.

Old stereotypes are still there... yeah there's less bloatware but have you seen the RAM management on the Note5? Shameful.
Now that the V10 is out I would also consider that as an option. It looks fantastic.

I think RAM management can easily be fixed with a software update.
The Note 5 - even with this "RAM management" issue - is still the fastest, smoothest Note I've used. Hands down!
Software was never a strong suite for Samsung, however, they are learning. Fast enough for some people, slow for others.
It should only get better...

Saw it... Not interested in the front screen thing, seems a bit gimicky...
But... Could be neat. I don't think I will wait that long until I upgrade.

Yeah, yet the track record shows Samsung will not upgrade the software's RAM consumption near as much as they could. They just don't have our interests at heart, rather the general public. After all we are a minority on XDA.
May settle for the Note5, will have to find time to go play with one in the store soon..
Otherwise I'll flip an iPhone 6S for the N6P... Ugh.

I see. Can anyone here tell me if it's valid to think you could completely replace a notebook and take notes in an 8 hour class day with the n5?

I say no. It may just be my writing, but I can only fit maybe 4-5 legible words across the screen in portrait mode, which makes for a lot of +New notes, or one lonnnnnnng one.
I've had my fun with it, but I am realizing it's just not convenient to try and pack a tablet into a phone, and use a phablet as a phone. I am now leaning more towards having a tablet for actual writing on, and a phone I can use easily in one hand for texting/emailing/calling.
