Android on your PC - Galaxy Tab S General

For anyone that's interested in running Android on their PC see the link below. It can either be natively run or run in a Virtual Enviroment with VMware or Virtualbox.
I'm currently trying it out with VMware and everything seems to working just fine, play store, you tube, internet, even sound is working. The only thing I've come across is the gallery force closes.
http://www.android-x86.org/
For a quick and easy setup to run in VMware or Virtualbox download the image from here: http://www.osboxes.org/android-x86/
See the screenshots below of it running on my Desktiop:

Thanks for the heads-up @ashyx, just had it running in VirtualBox on Kubuntu 14.04. It was a little buggy, kept getting playstore FCs fairly constant, even though I signed into Google.
Apart from that it runs well enough, I'm a little busy dealing with a dead hdd on my raid, so I only had a cursory glance, can't wait to spend more time with it when time allows though, thanks again.

Strange must be a virtual box issue. Play store was just fine for me. Im using vmware workstation 12 on a Windows 8.1 box.
I even managed to use the 02 TUGO app to send text messages from my pc.
I'm surprised how well it works actually.

Could be 'cause I tried the latest version 4.4-r3 which according to the available downloads, only works on VB. The version previous ver, 4.4-r2 works on both VB and VmW.
Might roll back and see if it works better.

Yes I installed 4.4-r2, however in android build settings it states kk 4.4.4.

Got around to giving 4.4-r2 a run, smooth as silk. Playstore updated all the software without a hitch too, so it not only now works, it works well, Much fun coming up.

Where would one get some help setting this up? I've tried several times to get it to boot from a USB hard drive and it just tosses me into the grub> prompt when it boots.....
Really would like to tinker with it. It will run from install but after that...no joy.
EDIT: Got it going! Switched to 4.4.r2 worked a charm!
Kinda neat seeing it run on a AMD Phenom CPU.

Its good for developers, better than the Android emulator allegedly.

Amiga Emulator for Android

Hi folks, I spent a good part of my sunday (and friday night, let's be honest) to port UAE4All for Android. So here's UAE4Droid. Most games are working fine, don't expect killer framerates though (it should be faster on a Droid). I don't plan to actively support this app, so here's the catch:
-no sound
-physical controls only (that's why I post here, you can configure them btw)
-no save states (the original project does not implement them, and I'm no good at understand basics of the 68000 emulation)
-should be ok starting from Android 1.5 but I didn't test it (Dream on Cyanogen here).
You need to own a rom copy and some disks to use this legally, of course. If there's some good feedbacks, maybe I'll put it in the market (already done a couple of emulators there). Enjoy !
Edit 12/27 : Now with sound and touch controls on the Android Market
damn you did this in one day?
make it one and a half
It's a port, not that hard, once you got some Android knowledge, the basics of the SDK-NDK interaction, and the open source works from several people. And I left some parts (sound and touch controls), quite buggy/boring to code
Did you ever know that you were my hero? Seriously, great stuff! If you could add sound this would be the best thing I have on my phone!
Amazing. Superfrog works pretty well. If I could just insert all floppies at once it would be completely awesome.
If you're not planning on supporting this too much in the future would you consider making it open source?
It's completely fun to put android next to my old ami500, old 1200 and turn on superfrog on each
Oh wow...that's pretty impressive. Superfrog on my phone would be awesome! I'll have to try it.
Ok, hate to leave work unfinished so I added the sound and touch controls. Watch the Market, it should appear there soon.
btw to enable the sound on a HTC Dream makes the emulator a little more sluggish, well now at least you'll have the choice (or buy a 2nd gen Android device )
Not working properly. App asks me to force close when I'm pressing MENU button... Previous build (from first post) works properly. Can I please to fix this bug?
After all, great job
Damn, I didn't make that much changes, could you get me a log trace ?
Hmm It's weird... After a couple of restarts of phone, the app is working correctly... I will leave a post (and logcat) when this problem come back.

looks like a modded ROM issue to me (this emulator is compiled for ARM, no doubt about it). Try the one from the market
Wow this works really well, playing Superfrog on it now Any plans to add save states to this?
I wonder how much better performance is on the droid. Superfrog plays perfectly on my G1 with frame skip disabled and sound off, having it on made it more jerky.
Also would it possible to have the escape key mapped to something, like the shutter button or as a menu item, i'm sure some games needed it to get into the menu.
Thanks for porting this!!
5 stars from me
works great, played with it a little. kickstarted 3.0 ROM, loaded game with no problems - but Hero's hardware isn't up to it. Maybe on my next android, with faster CPU and proper keyboard...
Only problem I have had is it doesn't seem to like some of my Kickstart rom files, it works fine with one of the 1.3 roms I had with WinUAE, but says Invalid for most of the others including 3.1, all of which work in WinUAE, any ideas?
what's the exact size of the non working roms ?
Non working rom size is as follows:
3.1 - 524,299 bytes
Just thinking could it be because it is a rom from Amiga Forever from Cloanto, do they use a keyfile for the rom?
No, because I thought every roms was 524288 bytes long. Will update the market version tonight
Blazing fast on a Droid/Milestone! Thanks a lot. Just the Mouse-Control is still a little buggy. For Disk-Activity you could use the green/red led! =)
how keyboard is emulated
Hi,
I have successfully set-up UAE4Droid, tried my favorite game, but it(Pinball Fantasies) needs alt or shift to control the game. I could not figure out how to play the game because of this. (Pressing alt or shift on the G1 does not work. )
Anybody know how to use these keys?
Thanks

[Q] Random Browser-related question (PC Vs Mac)

So I love the internet.
I love accessing the internet.
I love the speed of Google's Chrome browser.
But I own a mac.
It's a dual boot OS X & Windows 7, and I've noticed that Chrome for mac is wayy slower than Chrome for windows. Can anybody else relate to this/confirm?
I don't see any reason why chrome for PC should be so much faster than the Mac version, but that's what I'm getting & it's making me use windows on my mac all the time - making me question why I bought an Apple computer.
If anyone knows a solid answer to this or suggest a faster Mac browser I would be over the moon cause it's been bugging me for months now
Change to Windows
I use FF on my PC, but chrome on my mac. I have no problems with it. It is very fast and stuff like that.
Macbook something, 2.26MHz C2D and 4GB ram

Yes, I mean GHz.
You could try running the Beta branch of Chrome to see if that helps?

Isn't everything from google always in beta? lol
I use the Dev channel and Canary build. ( Canary build can't be your only installation of Chrome so I'm forced to have the Dev channel also) Canary build is blazing fast and I love the name!
EDIT: I cleared my cookies & that seemed to do the trick.. Often the simplest solution is the best
Don't get me wrong, Chrome is still fast for me on OS X, just not as fast as it's Windows equivalent, and that's what's bugging me, and for the record mine's also a macbook something 2.26 GHz w/ 8GB RAM (overkill I know but the RAM was on sale).
I have thought about permanently using windows, but in general the Mac OS is just prettier & less prone to freezing or 'Not Responding' & better.
I was hoping there were perhaps some networking or other settings I could alter to increase the speed, but no mention of anything so far. I read that turning off IPv6 can help but I tried it and didn't see any results, plus I have that enabled on windows so it shouldn't be the reason there's a difference. I also tried some other DNS servers, but they screwed around with the internet access at my university so I had to rever the changes back to standard.
I'll give the Canary build a try
EDIT: Turns out you can only get Canary for Windows
Thanks for all the responses

Rack's Dual Boot MiRaGe/CM9 Install

I'm a Noob and used Rack's thread in the development area to create my dual boot SD card. I just wanted to thank him and all of the developers here for their work. My install went smooth as silk and I am loving my new triple boot setup. Many thanks to all for making my NC a competitive little tablet!
I'm not quite a noob, but this looks like it would be easier than going from mirage to ics to miui in the span of two days
On my home pc I've got win7 and eight distros in a multiboot setup. Yes, I consider myself a distro whore
Been playing with Racks triple boot from SD for a while. Some things you might expect: Mirage CM 7 FCs both ADW and ADW Ex on me at intervals, and with no way to get back in to the system, I've had to reburn the whole business several times. Oddly, CM 9 still powers up when this happens -- I'd love to hear from someone on how to cross over from 9 to 7 installs to work on either. Also getting double entries for Gallery and several other installed apps. Mentioned in Racks thread, but couldn't make solution work (requires changing to rw and editing sys files).
Some other glitches, but if you like fooling around with your NC I'd still recommend the triple boot, as the less you use the weak SD gate on your device the less likely it will fail.

I'm not having any force closing issues with ADW or ADWex in Mirage. Mind getting me a logcat when this occurs? Also, what do you mean by double entries?
I'll be updating with an updated flashable zip for Mirage's latest build as well as ICS build. Hopefully by tomorrow and hopefully it will resolve the issues you are having.
Thanks,
Racks
Mirage and ICS have been flawless for me. Of course ICS still has it's quirks but that will improve with updates. This is a great setup for those who like to boot from SD and have the option of a fast, stable Mirage or boot into a not-quite-there but still useable ICS....
Sorry about my noobness, but I can't figure out how to get a logcat on the ADW & Ex FCs, as the only way I've been able to continue with your builds is by wiping the card and starting over; ergo, nothing's left over for breadcrumbs. The double entries business is two Gallery and two GMail side by side in my apps drawer. I read somewhere else in XDA the reason for this, and a fix by adjusting entries in the guts of the program, but I'm too new with Linux to try that (and too chicken).
Looking forward to your coming update. And a million thanks to you et al for all the hard work the rest of us are enjoying.

Do you have all 8 distros installed or are you running some of them from live CD/DVDs?! Either way, it sounds AWESOME!
I have win7 on my latest netbook, and I like it. I haven't yet loaded LINUX on it. I haven't decided which distro to use. My last netbook and my old laptop are XP/Ubuntu dual boots. I'm not too crazy about Ubuntu anymore. I'm not into Unity. What's your current favorite distro?
One problem I'm having is that Win7 doesn't see most partitions. That's why I need to get a LINUX distro installed.
I have Racks' multiboot on one uSD card, and Miui on another. Now, if Racks could just make it so we could add more ROMs to his set up, I'd be a happy camper. I think he might be working on a solution. I know I have Boot Manager on my Evo 3D. That works really great. It's nice to be able to change ROMs without having to reboot, or change my uSD card. Does that make me a ROM whore? Ugh, there must be a nicer name than that!

How many weeks did it take you to get used to Windows 8?

I am still getting used to it... well ... having to get used to it. I think trying to make an operating system that can be used for "everything" from touch-screen to business users is just very complex. I don't really like the metro stuff when I am using my Computer with a mouse. I can see that it might be nice on a tablet or phone ... but for desktop users it is just freaky... I also would not try to install Android and use it with a mouse
Well I am using it as my main system because I like apps on my desktop PC (with mouse & keyboard)
I went from XP straight to W8. (Gamer/Designer, so I need my laptop for my main usage).
Took me about a week. Mainly because I installed Classicshell. So it now looks and works a lot more like XP. The only way I can reach the Metro UI is by hitting windowskey + w. (I think. Might be a different combination, I never use it.) It boots to desktop, i'm using the unlocked real administrator account and I've got my Start menu back.
The only thing that annoys the life out of me is that you can't disable auto sorting in List view. You have no idea how many times you use that when you have folders with over 2000 files until it's gone.
I can't stand Metro UI. If I ever meet the designer who made that, I'll bash his head in with my uni's GUI Design rulebook. Repeatedly. Untill all he sees is massive square blocks of colour in 24".

LOL, weaks???
Btw, Windows 8 sux!!!
Windows 7 FTW..!!!
It was really fast for me, 1 week or even less
5-6 days
A little less than a week. Wanted to get a Chromebook, but I got my Win 8 machine for a bit cheaper. Hated it for a week, then loved it until I discovered how to install Ubuntu
>>>Sent from my homebuilt TARDIS running Android 4.4... or maybe it's a Kindle Fire HD running Cyanogenmod 11<<<
1 day
coming from windows 7 x64 to windows 8.1 x64 with start8 and no Metro
I bought a new laptop (my first one! ) and it came with Windows 8.1.
Got used to it in 2 days.
In desktop mode, which I use 95% of the time, it is almost same as Windows 7.
But what I have noticed is that it is more buggier than Win 7.
First, I tried to remove my lockscreen PIN and the settings app always crashed while doing it. It worked only after many reboots.
Hot Corners (for bringing up Charms bar and Multitask bar with a mouse) randomly stops working even when it is set to ON and only a reboot solves it (only for a short while). Very frustrating.
I've seen a few more bugs like these and many glitchy animations in Win 8.1 even with the latest patch update.
I do like some things with Win 8 like the quick bootup (this doesn't work sometimes too) and also the ability to play tablet/phone games on my laptop (I have a pretty weak phone. )
I miss Win 7 Aero though...
Set it to boot to desktop and installed classic shell and a 7 theme. Not even a day
Sent from my SPH-L900 using XDA Free mobile app
I installed classic shell for start button. And remove hot corners, and made it go to desktop right away in win 8.1
How many weaks did it take you to get used to Windows 8?
i think i gotten used to it within several days
3-4 Days and after installing StartIsBack it's almost like win 7
Not sure how this has become an issue to anyone. Win 8 is virtually the easiest one to get used to if you cater to a tablet friendly group. For a long time pc user it's still not that bad maybe like a day or 2 if you use your pc heavy and it'll be a smooth ride no prob. Just all about being patient and realizing it's a solid build with fun features even if most see them as novelty or infringing on their fanboy pc opinions.
I think the main issue is if your not 8.1 is finding the restart button and maybe messing with windows update but those can be fixed with the stardock thing or simply upgrading to 8.1
2 days.. and after switching to 8.1 it got better with updates.
I don't use win 8 apps or metro.

Trying out Droid 4 ROMs, and so far LineageOS 14.1 is problematic.

Hi all, I'm considering a move to Droid 4 from Stratosphere II. So far I've rooted it and flashed in the altpart version of SafeStrap recovery. This requires the use of the 20170405 unofficial build of LineageOS 14.1 that I had to dig out of an archive in Germany which uses the WebTop partition as a fat, juicy 1.3GB /system partition for gapps and also leaves me with a full 8.0GB free internal memory. HOWEVER --
Its performance is sporadic. At times it hangs for a long time before doing anything, like open the camera or the browser (I'm using Adblock Plus with the stocker disabled). The camera can take over 30 seconds to load. Often it's so slow to open things I tap on, that I tap on it again thinking it didn't "hear" me the first time, then it processes both taps and gives me more than I bargained for and damn near sends me into orbit over it. It takes some real restraint not to tap twice on stuff, but it's all just wearing me out.
The GoogleNow app is especially bad. It's so slow it's basically unusable. This was true on my Strat-II as well, but going back to the stock version fixed it there -- however I have been unable to transplant that version over to the Droid 4 with TitaniumBackup.
Videos are unwatchable, whether natively produced or on YouTube. They skip, hang, jerk and stutter.
Bluetooth has issues pairing with devices. I've sometimes been able to get things to pair after rebooting, sometimes not. And there's often an audio stutter in there until I reboot -- which seems like a memory problem again.
Wifi doesn't work after a soft reboot.
I tried a newer build (2/22/18) but it was just as bad if not worse. Same with an older 13.0 build. I think the reality here is that there's just not enough RAM to work with. If it had the full 1.0GB available to the OS (instead of the 834MB it actually has) it would probably alleviate these problems, but the video RAM is apparently shared and not discrete.
So my question is, can anyone recommend a well-behaved, solid-performing ROM for Droid 4?

What did you expect? it is a ancient phone. Give Sailfish OS a try, or just run CM9 or CM11. If you want a bit newer go as high as CM12.1 or some other 5.1.1 rom. Stop trying to run 2017 software on a 2012 device. Personally I can't wait for my new Droid 4 to come in the mail so I can run Sailfish OS on it. My first goal will be getting alien dalvik to work, then perhaps making my own stable builds.
EDIT: Also about the 834MB of ram, the device does have 1GB of ram, it is just that part of it has been reserved for only system use. This avoids system crashes when you have a lot of apps open, and like you said some of it is also reserved for graphics related things.

If you stay away from GApps, and use microG instead, everything works quite well (you can even use Play Store) with some Marshmallow and Nougat ROMs.
I'm using Mokee 60.1 (based on LOS 6.0.1) at the moment. With Xposed to enable Signature Spoofing for microG. Bluetooth, video, WLAN, no problem. Of course its slower than "modern" phones and sometimes hangs a bit. I have no experience with GoogleNow.
I'm testing crDroid 3.8.5 (based on LOS 7.1.2) now and I'm considering to change because it seems a bit snappier.
Hope this helps!
Thanks, I hadn't thought about it that way (Gapps being the problem more than the ROM) before. I tried Mokee a few days ago and it was too slow with the Gapps package I used, and I don't speak Mandarin so lots of the menus were... unenlightening to me. I am currently evaluating SlimKat (4.4) with a "normal" Gapps package and it is going really well so far. Just a few more things to test and if all goes well I'm dropping it in the stock slot.
My expectation was that once all the bloat was stripped out that the 13/14 versions would still run decently on this older hardware, but apparently not--even with a pico Gapps. I don't even like the newer versions anyway, and they offer me nothing more than KitKat with a whole lot less performance, so I'm happy to run a KitKat ROM if that is where the performance sweet spot is for a Droid 4... until a new QWERTY slider comes out. Any day now.

OpenGapps really bring the performance down.
I use the Droid 4 with LOS 14.2 as my daily driver, but only with MicroG and the PlayStore app. I wrote about that here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/dr...epartition-t3676476/post73956388#post73956388
(The first step can now be replaced with installing XPosed and the FakeGapps module for XPosed. It wasn't available at the time I wrote the post above).
I also went into the privacy options and disabled background running and auto startup for almost every application except WhatsApp. Now the device runs smooth as butter.
Edit: Almost forgot, one of these overclocked kernels really bring a bit more performance:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-4/development/kernel-nougat-custom-droid-4-razr-oc-t3499366
It depends on how well the CPU inside your device has been manufactured, though. Mine runs very well at 1.4GHz with ultra low voltage - that's a lot more speed and a bit more battery life
That's interesting, I've got a spare for testing I'll try that out on.
I got the OC kernel running, but no luck trying to install microG. The only APK I could find for Xposed was blocked for downloading as "unsafe". Is there a list of valid links for all this somewhere?

Xposed: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3034811
Flash the appropriate zip-file depending on your Android version and install exposedinstaller3.1.5
reboot (probably not necessary)
Load FakeGapps module in Xposed to enable signature spoofing
wait for FakeGapps module to load then reboot
microG: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/microg-unofficial-installer-t3432360
Flash zip. Installs (latest version of) microG. Installs Playstore to the appropriate (system) directory and sets necessary permissions
If you use a ROM with built-in signature spoofing you don't need steps 1 - 4, just activate signature spoofing in the ROM's settings.
(e.g. crDroid. Note: Flash OC-Kernel and WLAN will work!)
To get things working:
launch microG settings
goto Self-Check
allow signature spoofing for microG by tapping on the text of the relevant menu item
reboot (probably not necessary)
in microG settings enable Google device registration
launch PlayStore and follow instructions to sign into your Google account
opening PlayStore probably fails with error RH-01
clear PlayStore app cache & reboot (sometimes force close PlayStore app is sufficient)
PlayStore should work now
Have fun

Where is exposedinstaller3.1.5? I see only an uninstaller.

How is FakeGapps module loaded in Xposed? I have installed Xposed v89 for SDK25 in SafeStrap but I see no way to configure anything about it.

App (to load Xposed modules, - not to install the Xposed framework, this is done with the zip you flashed) see "Attached Files" at the end of the respective post (XposedInstaller_3.1.5.apk)
(the uninstaller you saw uninstalls the Xposed framework)
Xposed modules are loaded using the XposedInstaller app
Hope this helps
PS: changed from Mokee (Marshmallow) to crDroid 3.8.5 (Nougat) yesterday successfully. Much better performance. Some random reboots during app install (hope this will stop when everything is set up). Feels like a new phone.

Found it here, will give it a try today: https://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-4/development/rom-crdroid-unofficial-n-t3668542
Got microG working with crDroid, looks pretty awesome so far. But I can't get signed in to Google Voice. Without that I'm dead in the water. I need Hangouts as well, and that reports that it needs Google Play Services which is not supported.
I went ahead and did a pico Gapps install, and crDroid actually works really well with it - far better than Lineage does, and then of course all the Google stuff I need to use is there. I'm testing it out with the OC kernel and it had occasional reboots with the ULV 1.4 OC, so I'm dropping back to the LV 1.4 instead to see if that smooths it out. Otherwise it's the best Nougat ROM I've tried yet on D4.

It'd be so much easier and require much less steps if you just ran Sailfish OS

Hi Galaxyninja66,
I've been using SFOS since the Droid 4 version became available, and I love it. On the whole, I manage fine without Android apps, but there are 1 or 2 it would be very useful to have. I had a go at getting AD working, and I seemed to have it set up correctly, but I wasn't able to launch anything If you do get it working, and you get a moment, could you let me know what you did please?
Thanks

Sure thing. On a side note, how stable is it with GSM international? I live in Ausfailia so the US block shouldn't effect me (at least until I move back). Can you list all the issues you are having with it (the rom in general)?
Does QWRTY work okay on the keyboard?
Does the FM Radio work?
Have they made any progress with bluetooth?
What about this battery issue where it doesn't read the level right?
I want to know it all as I will most likely try to start building this myself.

Hi,
That's great, thanks.
I've had no issues with GSM apart from data not working immediately after flashing - you just have to install an app called 'Ofono Log', and select the 'Enable Data' option, and from then on it's fine.
No issues with the keyboard - if the keyboard is open it uses it, and if not, you get the virtual keyboard. I mostly use mine with the keyboard open, as I like a physical keyboard.
I haven't tried FM radio, but will give it a go and let you know.
As far as I know, bluetooth isn't working, but I don't really have any use for it. I will give it a quick go though, and let you know.
The battery thing is a nuisance, but it doesn't really bother me that much. Usually, it only happens after a reboot, so if you don't reboot, you don't usually have a problem. Occasionally, it'll just happen though, and when it does, you just have to reboot a few times until you get a proper reading.
On the whole, it works really well, and I can't think of any other issues I have with SFOS itself. Lack of a decent browser is my main annoyance. I really like the built in browser, but (I think) it's built on a very unstable version of Firefox, and tends to keep doing weird things and you have to keep killing it and starting it up again. There's Webcat too, but I'm not too keen on that, and would sooner put up with the problems with the built in browser.
I'lll edit this when I've tried FM/bluetooth, or if I think of anything else...
Thanks

If there is just a lack of FM radio app that means the qt fm radio app isn't in the patterns.
I can't wait for my Droid 4 to finally get here so i can have a keyboard device!
Does the keyboard backlight work?
Do the homekeys stay off?

Yeah, it's a good phone.
The keyboard backlight does work, but you have to set it up yourself - it's in the TMO thread, but I can give you the details if you need them.
Not sure what you mean by 'the homekeys stay off'? If you let me know I'll test.
Will let you know about FM radio and bluetooth sometime today (my time)...
