Huawei Honor 4x First Time Root Without Losing Stock ROM And Current Config / Apps - Honor 4x Questions & Answers

Huawei Honor 4x first time root without losing stock ROM and current config / apps
Hi.
I have requested my unlock code for the bootloader from Huawei.
When I unlock my boot loader using ADB will this cause the phone to reset to factory default or will it retain my existing configuration?
I am quite happy with the phone as it is but I would like to be able to install some of my root apps such as Titanium Backup, Juice Defender etc
Is this possible to do without breaking the existing ROM and my current configuration?
I dont want to load a custom ROM and lose my current factory stable setup.
Many thanks.
Rob.

Unlocking the bootloader will not reset your phone it will just make it possible to install custom recovery.
If you unlock the bootloader that doesnt give you SU/Root access it just makes rooting possible.
Highly recommend backing up your data , you never know!

did you root it?

[Q] Newbie question about rooting

Good day!
I am new here and I am interested with rooting my HTC ONE M7.
My purpose is to install a certain app which requires it. (XMOD games)
Before I do this I just want to ask a few questions and I hope you can help me.
1. Is it required to unlock the bootloader? or there is an option to not unlock it?
2. Granting that I have rooted my HTC ONE, can I still get updates on my OS if it prompts me to update it?
3. I watched some videos here and learned I need to unlock and then root, is that all I need to get the XMOD games app working?
For now I am only interested with using that app.
4. After unlocking the bootloader, it says it will be back to stock settings, can I restore my backup in my HTC SYNC manager and then proceed with rooting next? or I need to unlock + root and then restore?
I want to restore my back up using the HTC SYNC manager so that I wont have to install the apps and lose some other info.
TIA

1. yes you need to unlock
2. you must be full stock to update, but rooting requires flashing of a custom recovery first, recommended is the latest version of TWRP recovery: http://dl.twrp.me/m7/ then put this on your inernal storage and flash it to get root: http://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/ you will need stock recovery back to update, however, no one is sure if the M7 is going to get anymore updates yet, its pretty EOL
3. see answer 2
4. yes unlocking wipes the phone / factory reset, so backup everything first, unlock, flash recovery, root, reboot and restore.
I need more reading to pull this off without any problem. I've been reading some nasty stuff and I need to be careful.
I was under the impression that rooting is easy breezy. lol
Thanks a lot for answering my questions mate.

[Q] Relocking Bootloader after installing Cyanogenmod?

Hey gang, trying to make sure I won't run into any nasty surprises before I attempt this, so;
I want to install the Unofficial Cyanogenmod ROM for the Mi 5, move away from Miui - but I also want to regain Android Pay functionality (and a few other apps I'd like to use that require a 'secure' device). For that, as far as I know, I need to relock the bootloader. So basically I'm looking to have my device that is:-
• Rooted
• Running custom ROM
• Custom recovery
• Locked Bootloader (or at least Android Pay functionality)
Installing the ROM and keeping the recovery updated and working isn't a problem, but I just want to make sure that I won't bugger something up when playing around with the bootloader. I've never had a device that's needed a bootloader unlock before, so I'm very tentative around the whole idea.
Is there anything that I need to know about relocking? Such as specific quirks with the device (I've read people have found themselves stuck in boot loops after locking) and if it's even possible to do so with a different ROM installed.
Thanks in advance!
Don't lock bootloader again, usually it causes issues(been there, done that).
But Android Pay doesn't require a locked bootloader, just unmodified system.

Full backup and restore of ROM and data

Hi, I'm looking for an overall guide how to do a full backup and restore of a currently running ROM which includes also all data.
I want to be able to do some tryouts with another ROM and if anything fails or doesn't suite my needs I would like to simply go back to my current setting.
With some research in this forum I already found the follwing related threads. As this seems to be a quite generic topic I did the research mainly in the "crossdevice" section.
Backuping & Restoring IMG files W/O PC
requires root; guide without root is announced but not mentioned
some hints in the direction of "nandroid" but no detailed workflow
Lock/Unlock/Relock Bootloader Using TWRP With DRM keys
only about the bootloader
obviously there are more specific guides in the XZ1c section
All Things XPERIA; Debranding; Rooting & More...
good overview of basic skills regarding flashing, rooting, backup TA, etc.
nothing about full backup data or current ROM
nothing about restore a full backup
Backup your stock ROM without flashing Custom Recovery.
good short description to backup ROM
does this also work for data?
unsure if this is directly applicable to XZ1c
nothing about restoring ROM or data
I would be very pleased if someone who are familiar with this device can give some hints for my questions.
The long story:
Since Sony stopped to distribute security updates for XZ1c I feel forced to consider an alternative OS. I would like to give LinageOS 17.1 a try. Two years ago I had some good experience with that OS on a Z3c, but with th XZ1c it seems to be more complex especially regarding DRM keys etc.
I'm also using banking and payment apps which often stop working with alternative ROMs. Maybe there are some tricks to pass safetynet but at the end you have to really evaluate all your apps to be sure that all is running as expected. If that evaluation fails I don't want to spend much time to return to the current setting which I'm actually very satisfied with. Only missing security updates makes me think more and more of an alternative.
Thank you very much for any hint.
Best regards,
Leo
Maybe someone read this and can at least answer some questions. I'm completely not familiar with the processes so maybe my questions sound stupid. Sorry for that.
Is it possible to use fastboot to boot (not install) into TWRP and perform a complete Backup of data there without unlocking bootloader?
Gesendet von meinem G8441 mit Tapatalk
The easiest and fastest way is to perform a full backup using TWRP and you need an unlocked bootloader to do that.
Thank you for that answer.
I've read in Lock/Unlock/Relock Bootloader Using TWRP With DRM keys
Note - Unlocking bootloader for first time will wipe out your whole data including internal memory

You'll need to use Xperia Backup and/or Googles backup feature. A whole rom backup without root or unlocking the bootloader isn't an option.

So is it generally not possible to backup my data before first time flashing a custom ROM to restore it later to the current "official" state?
What about the temp root exploit? May this also allow a dump of the data partition like it does with the TA partition?

@leo2100, you can backup data (or firmware partitions) via an exploit having bootloader still locked. But for that you need to run exploitable fw version.
If you are on pie, you would need to downgrade to oreo and that would result with full data erase. You could backup few partitions that are not part of stock fw.
It is question if there is anything useful apart from TA partition - maybe persist partition, but I am not sure if it is possible to restore it.
There is a new temp root exploit that allows to get temp root with the latest oreo firmware (47.1.A.16.20):

Damn, that is not what I wanted to read
Ok, so at all I need to backup my data with the stock Pie built in abilities. So even if I return back to the stock Pie ROM I have to setup all apps again (of course depending on backup abilities of each app).
Is it correct, that once I did the backup of TA partition and restored it after unlock, I can also flash stock pie again but with the ability to boot into TWRP with fastboot?
Do I have to expect any restrictions compared to my current setup (running last Pie with locked boot loader)?
I ask this because I've had many troubles with my Z3c regarding safety checking apps like banking or 2FA (two-factor-authentification).
You see, I'm still not very confident to do this irreversible step of unlocking
@leo2100, you may get trouble to pass google/playstore certification - see here for more details.
If that is important to you, you may be better not to unlock BL.
Thank you for the hint.
The reason why I still worry about unlocking is that it is irreversible and may causes issues that I cannot see at the moment [emoji53].
So as this is really only a one way thing, I still will stay with the current setup and stop this "project", at least for now.

That is a wise decision in your case! I can tell you that the custom ROMs for the XZ1 are not at the same level as Lineage for the old Sony smartphones were. Do yourself a favor and stay stock and you will have no problems with banking apps.
I came up to the same problem!!
I am trying to undelete some accidentally deleted photos and using aany undelete comerscal utility expects a rotted phone in order to see internal XZ1 memory!
Any ideas? as I cannot see a solution how to get DRM keys backup before OEM UNLOCK!!

Question Can I install root on my device WITHOUT wiping any data from it?

i just want to say, i used my device for long, i dont wanna wipe my data but i want to root it. is that possible?
THX in advance
If your bootloader isn't unlocked then doing so will wipe data. If it is unlocked you can use the latest version of Magisk. Following this guide:
Magisk Root without custom Recovery and without losing Encryption
So, I unlocked my bootloader a couple of days ago, but when I got into the point of flashing TWRP, I realized that there is no custom recovery that supports device encryption. For that reason I didn't root my phone but there is a way around...
forum.xda-developers.com
Obviously you will need the correct boot.img file relevant to your specific Redmi Note 10s device extracted from an official rom.
You'll also need to enable usb debugging in the hidden developer options and configure ADB properly on your computer.
If you don't use the correct rom for your device it will get stuck in a bootloop, or just won't boot at all, requiring a hard reset and loss of all data.
There are guides for all these things on the XDA forums.
If you haven't heard of these things before, this is your main phone, or you aren't confident in your abilities then I don't recommend doing it, but it's your choice just don't blame others if something goes wrong.

okay! i think i dont wanna root it then if you give advice to not do so
Sorry I missed out the part about the bootloader which is important and edited the post above so please re-read.
Yeah if unsure then just don't do it as you could end up losing everything very easily.

technically there is a way to unlock the bootloader without losing data but magisk is kinda fuc*ed up on MIUI, and it can cause the phone to not boot

it's not as simple as that, you can register to unlock your bootloader by xiaomi from the dev options, but you still have to do the unlock though your pc with the miunlock program logged into your account. This takes 7 days to verify and the moment you do it it wipes your data.
This is the official way of unlocking your bootloader and being able to do with the device whatever you want.
There is an alternative unofficial way of doing it and that method claims to not delete data on your device, but I have no idea how well that method works since it seems to rely on some sort of workaround. here's a link to the post about that method, I just did mine the official way and copied my files back and redownloaded the apps.

also if you do decide to unlock your bootloader one way or the other, I recommend the following Kernel if you want a less throttled gaming experience.

+1 this works
Yes its possible to not wipe data or lose it during the process at this point in time.
Just this past week (I'm new to redmi phones ) did the same process for the note 10s and note 9.
The issue with bootloader unLocking (which normally means a data wipe) is negated with mtkclient.
A Data backup is just a good standard practice but understanding the procedures posted before and following them correctly should give no issue.
You can root it by using termux too.
To root an Android phone using Termux, follow these steps:
Install Termux app from the Google Play Store
Open Termux and run pkg install git to install Git
Run git clone https://github.com/Magisk-Modules-Repo/termux-root.git to clone the root repository
Change directory with cd termux-root
Run sh install.sh to install the root tool
Restart the phone and the phone should be rooted.
Note: Rooting a phone voids its warranty and can potentially harm the device if not done carefully. Proceed at your own risk.

Question Consequences installing custom ROM [SPES|SPESN]

Hello,
I would like to list the consequences of the changes when installing a custom rom on the redmi note 11 (spes/n).
In your opinion, what causes the following changes on our phone
This is some responses I can give after testing myself
1/ Unlock bootloader
Erase all your data
The unlock icon appears on the top of starting logo
2/ Install custom Recovery
Nothing have happened
3/ Install custom Rom (for me Evolution X)
First install : You will have to erase all your data
Upgrade : Nothing should happen
4/ Root
Maybe Unauthorizing Bank apk ?
Hi Darkspirit66,
Whilst I am not at the Custom Rom'ing stages yet with this phone, too new for me to tinker with this one... I'll just have to settle with me other phones for messing around with for now...
However I am glad you've raised these points. Whilst I've asked this before in another thread, its good to have clear answers...
Whilst most of the earlier questions, I kinda of expected. Some kind of message/logo at booting stage to announce it's unlocked/modified. I believe this is standard in pretty much all phones, one way or another.
Unlocking Bootloader/Flashing, again.... erasing of the data is standard practice again.
The bit that most concerns me... Is there any tell tale signs of after unlocking/rooting....? I've come from a mainly Samsung background. In the early phones, you simply ran "TriangleAway" and bob's ya uncle... no one is any of the wiser. Under new models, once ya trip the ole Knox, there's no going back. Permanent visible sign of tinkering, and security and bank apps will never work again without tricks.
So, if one was to unlock the Bootloader, root, rom and then change their mind and go back to stock. Will all the banking apps continue to work, or does it alter it for good....? I believe once unlocked and with custom recovery, its best to flash stock with TWRP as you get to keep the unlock but can flash stock and custom as much as you like without any triggers...??
Cheers, Lister

Hi LOS
Rooting the phone results in the problem with banking applications.
If you decide to unroot (it's possible) and reinstall a stock rom the apks should work again. (To confirm)

You can always hide root with magisk and keep your phone rooted also with banking apps ;-)
