[Q] Best Car Mount? - Nexus 5X Accessories

I'm looking for a car mount that can replace my old N5's qi based charger. I have a curved/textured dashboard, it would be great if I can mount on that!
Thanks!

My old civic had a curved and textured dash and was incredibly difficult to find a suction mount that actually held.
Enter iOttie.
These mounts typically have a soft and sticky suction mount that will adhere to almost any surface. I picked up the "easy flex 2" which has served me well for a couple years without ever detaching.
Word of caution though, when trying remove the mount yesterday it took CONSIDERABLE effort to pry it from my dash as the sticky bottom of the suction cup had become so settled that it seemed glued to my dash. I eventually pried it off but not without leaving some marks on my dash which I do not know if they can be cleaned off. The most common complaint for iOttie seems to be this "super adhesion" and is worth considering before purchase.
Tons of their mounts are available on amazon, http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias=mobile&field-keywords=iottie
HTH!

Any idea if a magnetic mount will work on the 5X (as with the 5?)
Thanks!

My iOttie Easy One Touch 2 car mount has been awesome

I have an iOttie which works great. My new car has a weird curve to the windshield so I now use a CD player mount ballhead phone holder that works really well.

This! I love this mount and always recommend it to people who have a CD slot in the dash, as long as its not in an awkward position. It's centered, close, my old iOttie dash mount was leaving an imprint, and cooler temperature wise by not being in the windshield. The last one is important for me especially in the hot Florida sun.

Just the CD slot version for me. On my Audi it sits very nicely above any car interface I might want to use, thus doesn't get in the way of anything.

The cd slot version has two different kinds though.
One has a magnetic plate
One has the normal cradle to put your phone in

Ah, sorry, I have the cradle.

I like that one alot but not so sure I want something actually on top of my dashboard. I'd rather have it in front like the CD one

I'm happy to see my original iOttie OneTouch will fit the N5X (I currently use it with the N5). Says it fits phones up to 2.9".

I actually decided to order another one but this time the magnetic Snap 3 version. I realized that because the phone has both power and volume on one side, the cradle version would have to grip it lower than it does on my GS5. Kind of throwing it off centered while in landscape. I do like the idea of putting the mounting badge on the inside of a case to keep it more discrete.

I went with the Spigen mount... It works great on my current HTC One M7, but I have concerns with the buttons in the middle of the phone on the 5X. Will see this week...

I hadn't thought about that. Please update with how that goes. I still haven't pulled the trigger on it.

Ok, been using the Spigen mount over the past few days... Overall, I think it will be hit/miss for many. I started with the phone centered in the mount, which results in the volume buttons being in the 'clamp zone', the power button was not interfered with. I inserted/removed the phone several times. There was one time that I noticed the volume button was hit (showing the volume slider on screen), but it wasn't being held down. So, there will be instances when the volume (and maybe the power, depending on how you insert) can be bumped, but it doesn't appear that the mount design will keep the button pressed.
I then adjusted the phone so it was offset in the mount so that the volume/power were not interfered with. Made inserting the phone a bit awkward, but that is likely due to having a certain method of mounting the phone. I think I just need to re-learn the process and it will be fine. I was happy with the result because it actually moves the phone closer to me. I have had no issues hitting the volume keys with it offset, nor was there any issues with the stability of the mount with the phone like this.
So, YMMV, but I will continue to use the Spigen mount...

I bought a Spigen magnetic vent clip mount. Then I cut down a Ringke Slim case and mounted a plate behind it. Phone slips and the magnet holds the butchered case in place when installing and removing. If I am running a case I put a plate in between the phone and the case and place a piece of dryer sheet between the phone and the plate. Not the nicest but quite functional.

[Q] Need a Car Mount works with seidio innocase ii?

Hello all,
I love my seidio innocase ii and holster combo. I am looking for a car mount that will work with the case and allow charging too. I went by VZW today and looked at their Incredible Case. As stated in the other thread you can't use any case with it. I purchased a OEM air vent car mount, but the charging socket is blocked unless you slide your phone up in the grips (the two grips have holes cut out in the middle). I don't really like this one because the release button is at the top behind the phone. Not this one, but very smiler http://tiny.cc/eahgk
I would like to find one that can turn 90 degrees with a ratcheting action that the car charger can work with.
Bright Idea
I'm thinking about cutting up an old leather belt and gluing a small loop of it on the dash so I can clip my Seidio case on it. I'll let you know how it works out.
Just kidding dbrown! I am seriously eying the universal holder from http://www.proclipusa.com/ which definitely covers the usb port but I'm picturing a hole or slot cut through the side to fix that. All the other universal stuff looks HUGE
Why go for a universal holder when they have one made specifically for the DInc? Unless you have other devices you are planning on using with this. I just don't like their mounting spots for my vehicle, too bad too =/.

We're looking for a holder that will work with the phone and case. I don't want to take the phone out of my case every time I need to mount it on the dash of my car.
I just got this:
amazon.com/gp/product/B003H92LSA/ref=oss_product
But I'm not satisfied with it. Cause to the short neck, The screen is head to the top of my head, and it's not very easy to get my phone on it.
Look for a better mount, still.
i've always used this gooseneck windshield mount from verizon.
you can find it by not specifying a phone under view all mounts..
Part #WINDMNT1
19.99
it fits most all phones ever made, plus cases.....
i have my inc in it tilted so i can access the touch screen keyboard...
i got a universal one from bestbuy and it works pretty good
I have one of these on the way. http://www.clingo.com/car-mounts/universal-hands-free-mount
I think that I would like to the get TETRAX XWAY to mount my DInc. Since I'm a new member I can't post links. Sorry.
I did see a nice video review and it seems like it would work perfectly because you can leave the phone in its case.
my friend got a car dock at the vzw store, the clip part the phone goes into is actually a removable belt clip. you can remove it from the car dock completely and put it all on your belt, pocket, whatever you wanna clip it to. however, there's no case involved in that package. i'm sure seidio has a case/clip you could mod to work with a similar product as i described first.
My plan is to get the car mount from htcpedia and the innocase holster for the Surface. Then either switch out the belt clips (hopefully), or just use my dremel on the innocase holster belt-clip to cut out the same as the mount's beltclip.
A little more expensive, but seems to be the best "factory-type" option I can come with.

I have one of these too, it's awesome! If you want a mount that doesn't stick on the windshield AND works with a case...this is the way to go.
Hello,
I really like the xway too, but not sure if it would work with the inocase II. The case has a ridge that runs down the length of the back of the case. I went with this..
http://bit.ly/9lOy6V. I got the sm410 and currently using the vent grip. Its a little big, but does put the dinc with arms reach if needed. And the power cord is not blocked.

I have the same one, picked it up from microcenter
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0281093
works well with my innocase active. but sometimes when you secure the dinc in place the mounts grips will press the volume button. its not too hard to position it in the middle of the rocker so it wont adjust it, and it not a problem once you have it set in there.
would buy again
I've tried several different mounts and haven't been happy with any, until now. I picked up a couple of the SoundGate M2 universal docks from wiredforless.com and could not be happier. The install was simple, once mounted it looks great and folds down into almost nothing. I don't know if it's still available, but I used discount code WOOT and got two of the mounts and shipping for $14.95.
AND, it works great with the Seidio case I have.
Great product, couldn't be happier.

You can switch out the belt clip on the car kit holster with the Seido clip, I've done it. Just tap out the pins in both clips, place the spring back in between the clip and the holster and tap one of the pins back in. Works like a charm. Now I'm trying to get all the audio and charging done with a modified 12 pin micro usb from the TV OUT cable.
I did reviews on these:

I almost bought that one, but I didn't like how it didn't have anything holding the Nexus S from the side. And I don't like windshield mounts. (Yes, I know it had a dashboard mount but I'll get to that in a second).
I ended up buying: http://tinyurl.com/63eh7wh
The windshield mount worked fine, has a little lever to push to generate suction and the hold is very strong. However, like I mentioned before, I don't like windshield mounts. Next step was to try the dashboard. Now, I don't know if it's because of the way my dashboard is shaped(curved, ratherthan flat) but the little stickypad thing never stuck. I ended up giving up on and settling for the air vent mount which works fantastic! Looks great, nothing obstructing my view, and the hold is almost as strong as the windshield. I'm very pleased.
On this mount, the USB port is not obstructed but the headphone point is. The bottom "legs" are also not adjustable.
Carmount
I just bought one of these from CarphoneWarehouse. It is a suction windscreen mount with an extra dashboard pad (plus double sided sticky pad) which I didnt use. The suction mount is pretty good. The extension that comes with it is too wobly though !

Just took delivery of one of these today, fit and build quality is excellent. Been using Brodit for years, to me nothing comes close.
Sorry.... as I'm new I can't post a link however Mobilefun in the UK do Brodit and had the passive holder in yesterday - sold out already I see.
Google (from UK) Brodit Nexus S and you should be able to get it from there.
Also maybe try DSL developments, I think they are the UK Importer.

I am also using this Arkon mount that BruceCLin recommended (thanks!) in landscape mode on my windshield. The mount is pretty sturdy with very little movement during driving. It has a very tight spring that keeps the phone clamped securely in place. This is temporary until ProClip comes out with a holder for the Nexus S.

The most sticky part of the dashboard part is in the middle. I have an '08 Civic and almost the whole dashboard is somewhat curved. I found a spot where it's flat, but the dashboard part doesn't cover all of it, just enough where all the stickiness in the center sticks to it and stays tight.
As for the legs, it is adjustable. I bought that exact same one you linked and got it today. You need to use some force to take those legs off or adjust it. I just took mine off since it was annoying to due where the ports were located.

Iottie Wireless Care Charger

I just installed this yesterday, and I am very impressed with this charger. It was an easy install and does not fall off of my curvy dash. Slides in with one click and easy to remove. I love not having to plug my phone in for charging in my car. I might have to invest in wireless charging for home. Just to easy. By the way I got it for under $50. Just do a quick search, I am not sure if I am allowed to post links to commercial sites.

I have been using this charger for about 6 months now, first on the GS5 now on the Turbo. Overall it is a decent mount with the added benefit of wireless charging. It has a gummy surface on its suction cup so it can, and has, mount on marbled dash surfaces as well as smooth ones. The suction action along with the glummyness gives the mount significant strength. The charging is almost as good as my TILT mount at home.
One of the issues I have with the mount is I get a good amount of wobble while driving if the bottom is not in contact with a surface. It seems that the arm holding the charge surface and phone could be stiffer or have a locking mechanism to reduce wobble. The other issue I have with it is there is no release for the mount. You have to pull the phone out and spread the grips so that it will "grab" the phone next time you use it.
Overall a run of the mill mount with the added benefit of wireless charging. Definitely worth the $50.
Thanks. I was searching the same information since many months. Thanks for your hard work.
This could only be made better if it was magnetic grip. The two holding arms are okay, but I love my magnetic vent mount. It doesnt offer qi charging, but if the two could be joined together, that would be great.

Because of the gummy suction this mount can be mounted any flat portion of your dash. My Element has it mounted to a slightly curved portion of the dash and in my old SI I actually had it mounted vertically. The surface need not be smooth nor flat just relatively so.

Car Dock
I just got an HTC One M8 & also needed a new car dock. I got the iBolt dock from amazon that is universal. I will work with most phones, and ANY case.
Here's the link from Amazon:

The USB cord is reversible so you can have it on the left side, or on the side of a phone. I've had it for almost 3 weeks now & I love it!
Mountek nGroove is dead simple, and can hold just about any smartphone in any case.
As long as your CD slot is in a decent spot (to see the phone will navigating, etc.) and don't use it for CDs, this is a elegantly simple solution. It install in seconds, not sensitive to falling off like suction cups, and I've used it on a variety of rental cars while travelling (although a couple cars I've rented did not have good CD slot placement, such as low and the mount blocked the gearshift).
The nGroove even has a tension adjustment for the ball joint. As most any such joint will loosen over time and become useless without such an adjustment.

That is an interesting solution. Does it vibrate very much while driving and can the whole thing rotate to landscape? The reason I need the rotate function is I use polarized sunglasses and when my phone is in portrait I can barely see the screen.

Any of the mounts vibrate some, at least the ones I've used. In my view, anything that juts or sticks out from the dashboard or windshield is going to shake a little from road vibration. But the Mountek nGroove doesn't vibrate much, and not in a way that effects its function or viewing the screen (such as for navigation).
The mount is on a ball joint, which easily changes from landscape to portrait orientation and vice versa. The ball joint also has a tension adjustment (that you turn with an object like a coin) so you can vary how loose or tight the ball joint movement feels.
Overall, a very slick, simple, yet well though-out solution. And at $20, you don't really have much to lose in trying it, either.
The only (slightly) negative comment I have on the Mountek nGroove, is that the dust flap or bristles that protects/seals your CD slot might (probably) get deformed over time (and it states this in the instructions). In fact on my car, the CD slot dust flap is a felt-like material, and the nGroove actually tore the material is 2 spots due to the way the clamping action works. But the nGroove is always in the CD slot, so I don't really care. Just something I (barely) noticed when I take the mount out.
Well, I'm not sure if you've found your solution already, but I have a tech matte vent car mount from amazon, and that's a pretty good mount.

Spigen - Easily the best car mount

This new mount from Spigen is the best car mount I've ever seen. Mount it right behind the steering wheel and you have a heads up display just below the windshield, at least on the Mazda 3. Perfect.

It's good but could be better. The sticker on it sucks for the windshield in hot weather. I replaced it with 3m tape.

Would this work well for someone who is looking for a mount to use in rental cars? Not seeing how reusable the adhesive pad is anywhere or if it's going to leave marks that I'll get charged for.

The power suction enables you to mount on to almost any surface such as dashboards, metal, glass, plastic and even drywall Silicon lined grid keeps your phone and other devices safe and secure.
A suction attachment seems much more durable than adhesive. temperature won't matter and it can be adjusted as it isn't permanent. An essential feature.

Nice but doesn't have Qi support for me... I use my phone a lot in the truck so I have been looking for less hassle with cords for the power... got the bluetooth audio for the nav & music but it needs a power source to run all day.
Amazon sell it for #16.99

NICE ONE ~ Like the design. I guess I'll have to ask my dad to buy one of this. He is still using a navigator when driving.
