RRO Layers Theme Support in Marshmallow - Nexus 6P Themes and Apps

Just a reminder that RRO/Layers themes work out of the box with marshmallow, assuming you are rooted. The official layers app does not seem to work for me, but you can head to /System/Vendor/ and manually create a folder called overlay within that folder. (You should end up with /system/vendor/overlay) You will need to mount /system with R/W access, which means you'll need something like root explorer.
From there, copy any RRO theme APKs into that directory and reboot. You will want to be careful though, incompatible APKs may cause that application to crash - and an incompatible SystemUI.apk will cause the phone to bootloop.
Update 11/6 - the beta version of the layers app works great. It should be in the play store soon, but you can sideload the APK from here : https://plus.google.com/117376207394302665227/posts/P5Z41eL57bz

Just as an example, I am running an RRO version of the CM12 theme coalfield on my new 6p

And here are the APK files if you want to give it a try: <Mod Edit - Link Removed> Just move the individual APK files to /system/vendor/overlay as mentioned in the first post. Also, I removed the settings.apk theme file as it causes the settings app to crash. Everything else seems to work great!
All credit to Kohlewrrk. (who has not had a problem with posting this version elsewhere) The theme can be downloaded for free from : <Mod Edit - Link Removed> .. If you want to support the designer, please purchase his paid CM12.1 theme.

I can't get it working :l
Step 1: Move the base.apk file of a RRO theme from /data/app/<themefolder> to /system/vendor/overlay
Step 2: Open "Layers" app and apply theme.
Step 3: Reboot.
?

The layers app is your problem, uninstall it. Just manually move the apk files to /system/vendor/overlay and reboot. No need to apply or install anything

Ahh I finally figured it out. I was trying to apply this SkyBlue Layers theme. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=bitsykolayers.SkyBlue
When it's installed, all the files are contained in a single APK in data/app/<themefolder>.
I had to extract the contents of the APK, extract the contents of a .ZIP file within, and then copy those files to system/vendor/overlay.

Dang, I was trying to get layers to work through Layers Manager and gave up despite knowing Marshmallow had RRO support built in natively. Thanks for sharing!

I'm adding a nav bar layer apk into the overlay folder from the navigate app on the playstore, have extracted correctly from the zip but it still isn't applying, I'm rooted with busybox etc, are there certain permissions or something silly I'm missing? Any help appreciated, cheers

I set permissions just look at other files in system for correct permissions

That did it, I thought I had the right permissions but apparently not, thanks!

It says "not enough space": (

I can't get this to work! I have tried all the instruction exactly. RRO location is correct, all apks extracted from the coal theme. Permissions set to 0644. What am I missing here?
I'm rooted but no busybox. Uninstalled Layers too
edit** basically my permissions were incorrect! Fixed!

mine also says not enough space.. but there's plenty in system partition?

Same thing happened to me, I cleared out a lot of RRO layers that I didn't want and copied in only the important ones to me like nav bar, status bar, etc.

Test version of Layer manager that solves the issue with creating vendor/overlay on 5X and 6P
You need to uninstall the playstore version and sideload it
Do not work yet with Styles, so don't go with Magpie/CommuteUI. I have got Inversion UI to work just fine on my 6P, see attachment. Post any bug/issue you have that's not reported yet on that gplus post.

Midnight is a good one(Hangout/G+ on it is style based so currently unsupported through layer manager). Download the Layer Showcase app from playstore for a easy way to find them. Should be enough to satisfy you until Layer devs work out that bug.

For those of you using dark themes what are you doing about the contacts text always being black? I'm currently using destiny dark theme and its a bit grey so its readable .
Maybe if we're lucky someone will edit the contacts.apk with the fix

How to MetaMorph/Theme

Credits for MetaMorph Go to Stericson and Kastro.
Credits for the MetaMorph Gui (The application) go to Stericson
Honorable mentions go to Riku, prash, and djengizz For continued support and testing metamorph!
MetaMorph is located in the Android Market in both a free version and a 2.99 donate version, with the donate version being a step ahead of the free version. (One version may be behind the other but they both will receive the same updates)
If youd like to support MetaMorph and keep development going on it please consider purchasing the 2.99 donate version
What MetaMorph is
MetaMorph is a project designed to allow us to patch files within .jar and .apk files on the phone.
Initially MetaMorph was designed for themers but it was discovered through use that we could also use it for applying customer dex files, resource files, images, and xml files. Pretty much anything inside of the apk and jar can be replaced with MetaMorph, which makes it very versatile and useful, in addition to this we can now copy files to places on the phone or sdcard, and we can implement the use of scripts now!
In this thread we will discuss how to theme using MetaMorph and any bugs that may be found with MetaMorph.
To use metamorph simply download an appropriate package for it to your sdcard and select it with MetaMorph.
Here is some basic info about MetaMorph:
Compatible themes can be found in various forms around the XDA forums, try looking by device. (eventually the donate version will get a theme repository, the free version wont get it)
I only recommend downloading what is in the first posts as those have been tested to work with your device and rom!
Please report any bugs.
MAKE A NANDROID BACK BEFORE USING.
Use at your own risk
Heres the link to videos showing metamorph in use:
Part1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaTVRul-juY
Part2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqLuyeiM-Qo
Heres a quick video showing a metamorph theme being made from scratch using the old .thm control file! (which is not being supported anymore)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9y3ooUZZrg
MetaMorph uses a fairly simple format to apply changes to apk or jar files, here you can find out how to create these templates:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX2xbY4nSd4 (Video 1/4)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dvps2501CAg (Video 2/4)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iu5AHF-Zew (Video 3/4)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgVL-0E8Rh8 (Video 4/4)
To tell metamorph what to do you need to include a Theme Control File. The Theme control file is located in the root directory of the template and MUST have the EXACT same name as the template. Here is a video on how to make the Theme Control File:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq4AuHKzNFo
(The old .thm control file is no longer supported. if you need to convert your old theme to use the new .xml toll check here for a tool that will convert it for you:
http://bit.ly/df70cv )
Compression is not accepted on MetaMorph zip templates.
The latest version of MetaMorph (MetaMorph Pro V1.9.8) can be found in the Android Market!
================================================================================
// MetaMorph, what it is and isn't
================================================================================
MetaMorph, at heart, is simply a program that takes files from a directory and adds them to an already existing zip package.
In this case, our zip packages are apk and jar files.
What metamorph is used for, or what it accomplishes by moving files around is completely up to the designer of the package that is used.
For instance, if I make a package that tells metamorph to move a dex file into services.jar then I may be wanting to change the color of the clock which resides on the status bar. If this happens then MetaMorph has not done this, the creator of the package has done this and metamorph was simply the tool he/you used to accomplish this easily. In the same sense, if the desired change does not happen it is most likely not because of metamorph, but rather a fault in the package or instructions that metamorph was given.
here are some things using metamorph can cause:
1) As of right now MetaMorph cannot be used on market apps. If you do happen to use a package that modifies market apps, they will disappear from your phones launcher menu. This is because market apps are signed with Developer keys and by changing them we are changing the md5sum of the package. When this occurs the package takes notice of this change and starts rechecking its integrity. When the package discovers it has changed and has not been resigned with its approved key, thereby approving these changes in a sense, then it will basically error out and Android will remove it. Again MetaMorph can be faulted because it cannot handle this type of action but it cannot be faulted for this if you do it after reading or knowing of this limitation.
2) MetaMorph may also show you and error that some file doesnt exist or that some file that the theme control file is looking for doesnt exist. Again while these errors are thrown by MetaMorph, they are not caused by MetaMorph but by the package that you selected. When MetaMorph runs it checks for two things:
A) That the directory that the theme control file has specified where
the contents that we are to move to another zip package actually
exists in the theme.
AND
B) That the target zip package that we will add files to actually
exists in the path that the theme control file has specified.
This protects the ap from Force closing, and the second check protects you from having unneeded files being created on your phone when it detects that the target apk doesn't exist.
If you have any issues with a theme/package not working please speak with the theme/package creator.
If you have issues, questions, or suggestion with/for MetaMorph please leave them here.
If you have questions about how MetaMorph can be used and how to create packages for it, please leave them here.
If you still have problems with a theme or package that cannot be resolved by the theme/package creator please let us know so that we can take a more in depth look into the issue.

HELP!
=========================
Theme not applying
The issue here is that your phone probably doesnt have enough space in your /system partition, you can check the space using "df" in a shell. (terminal or another like program)
Depending on the device you have you may need a different SPL to be able to apply themes.
MetaMorph is a tool designed to change files within apks and jars. With this goal in mind MetaMorph succeeds very well.
However, MetaMorph cant predict what you will do with it. The packages you apply with it are are unknown to MetaMorph, and it cant be held responsible for what you decide to apply.
With this being said, it is your responsibility to make sure that the package you apply will work for your phone, and it is the themers responsibility to let you know what requirements are needed to use his package, this includes free space, specific hardware, and specific software needed.
Thanks,
Stephen
some idea. include a ceck for andexplorer in your app like the check for zip binary
Good Idea, I may actually do that.....

[THEME] Massive *~BUUF~* For MDPI. Metamorph

So here it goes. After over 250 hours of copying, editing, resizing, renaming, putting things together and so on...
At long last it is ready. Buuf THEME finally for HERO devices.
The amount of work was massive.
For your OWN ease of application i have turned this into a Metamorph Theme. So you need to download Metamorph from the market (free).
SO! Here are the pictures.

- THIS REQUIRED ROOT ACCESS. For those that DON'T have root access, you can only apply the ADW launcher Theme.
- As you can see there is a lot of working going on through there. I tried to make it easiest to apply by creating this via metamorph. This means that WHENEVER an update for your rom comes, you dont have to wait for my update, you can just *simply* apply the metamorph zip and you'll have all your Apps buuf'ed. The only thing i couldn't metamorph yet was the framework-res file. I am planning to integrate that very soon, but at the mo', you're gonna have to apply a .zip via your recovery.
- Also, i am using ADW Launcher. There was a theme named ADW.buuf.theme in the market. That was not working with my rom causing many FC's, so i stripped it down, recreated it from scratch and added a ton of new app images. I have added a lot of default values that suited my liking (highlight color and so on). If you dont like those, simply change them via ADW Settings. ALSO, i have used some code from Eliotstocker to make this theme have some wallpapers. Simply change wallpaper and you should be greeted with a "Buuf Picker" option. In there i have included some of the best Buuf wallpapers.
- As you can see, I have applied a Circular Battery mod (credits to the creators). If you dont like it, simply go to the kitchen and create another mod. It is included in the framework-res.apk zip file
- I am using an edited font, extracted from the Galaxy S by Alex.
- I am also using LCD Density Changer. My setting is @ 139.
- Finally, i am attaching a small .zip file with the bootanimation i use (credit to the creator - sorry don't know who you are) with some amazing boot sequence back from the energy BIOS days, PLUS ad-free hosts, ridding you from the annoying ads.
ROMS
This is initially created for FroydVillain 1.5. The metamorph file should be applicable to ALL AOSP 2.2 Roms for ALL MDPI devices.
The only limitation at the moment is the lack of integration of the framework-res.apk file.
Instructions
1) Download Metamorph and install. Make sure you disable autokiller, in case it kills metamoprh while updating
2) Create a folder AndroidThemes in your SDCard and put the BuufMDPIApps.zip file in it. Apply.
3) Reboot to recovery and apply the framework.zip file
4) Download ADW Launcher and install my edited Buuf Theme. Go to ADW Settings, Theme Preferences, Load and apply.
5 - Optional) Apply fonts.zip via recovery - Credits to Alex
6 - Optional) Apply myboot.zip.
Caution: During the metamorph application of the theme, your phone is going to FC a lot, and sometimes ask for your pin. Please do apply the zip until it is totally done (if it stops, redo it), dont let your phone sleep, and please interact with the FC/SIM lock screens.
Uninstallation
Simply flash your ROM zip file on top. No wipe needed.

Donation
- This complete theme pack wasn't created for money. It was created to make the Buuf Theme live on for the MDPI Devices. All credits are due to the people stated above.
- However, i have put into this over 250+ hours of work. And for those of you who have never themed, well all i can say it was really a pain.

hi!

It works perfectly on Froydvillain 1.5
Just one question : what is your clock&weather widget on the screenshots ?
I am terribly sorry, i think i've put an unsigned framework-res.apk file. I shall update soon.
My clock is Beautiful widgets, with the ANDRODena_Buff clock skin and EmotiSun Weather skin.
edit. I updated the framework-res.apk file, although i doubt it was unsigned, on a second note. Perhaps your download was corrupted. Redownload and let me know please
PS. Thanks for the nice comments guys.

My particular framework-res.apk is modified. It includes the circular battery mod, which not only changes png's, but also adds a few xml files. So yes it does indeed need to be signed. The apk itself cannot, but the .zip needs to be signed with test keys, allowing for the modified framework-res.apk to be extractable and allowing recovery to apply it.

Why were you reffering to the apk before then? Anyways doesn't matter
phone keeps rebooting at gmail.apk floyo 0.8
Looks great, I will be installing on my lunch break
One question - what difference does the LCD Density app make, and why choose the density you have ?
@shields - try to manually update the rest of the apk's. My phone rebooted as well on Gmail.apk. perhaps you have autokiller running or something. Choose Apply existing theme, select the xml file, and manually update the rest apk's
@furrypotato The difference LCD Density app does is that it makes the screen look like a higher resolution one. For example, i can fit 5x5 (columns x rows) instead of the classic 4x4 MDPI devices have. My setting is just something i have found to work fine, and dont have too many scale issues with my apps.
Installed it and loving it.
A very different theme for me to use that's a refreshing change
Thanks
Thanks for the nice comments.

Whats the best method of adding custom icons ?
I only had a few minutes to look before I left for work but I took a look on Buuf website and found an icon I'd like to use for Tweetdeck. (Fauna #13)
Now I'm guessing I can amend the xml file in the zip in some way and place the icon.png file in folders like the others, but is there an easy way of doing it ?
I even bought beatiful widgets cos I love the themes so much
Oh, and I updated to the new Gmail last night and it's broken some of the gmail graphics such as notfication of emails.

There's no way of adding custom icons yourself. That's how i tried to do it as well. But it doesn't work. You have to create the APK from the beginning, and thats what i had to do. Took me nearly 3 days of non-stop work to remake it.
I, unlike the original creator, will intent to update the icons when asked. So let me know what icon you want for what app, give me the activity name if you have it and i will update it.
I haven't had an eye on the new gmail (as a matter of fact i didnt even know it existed). I will look at those on the weekend, as the following two days i'm taking 3 exams and my head's about to explode.
Let me know though.
Cool thanks.
I'm looking to get the attached icon added to TweetDeck Beta . Dont know activity name sorry (Whats best way of getting it)
Tweetdeck beta in case you need it :

New Gmail is downloadable in market by the way.
friggan brilliant man, many, many, many kudos.

Gingerbread based theme for Ascend and MDPI & HDPI devices Update [1/10]

Update 1/10 Minor update to some, maybe major to others, I've made some changes to the status bar pull down for Ascend users, I've changed the main text to be black, I'm still not completely happy with it, so i'll keep tweaking... Also, I've added support for HDPI devices in the Gingerbread3.5.zip, in general the theme should work on a wider variety of devices.

Update 1/9 The theme is pretty much complete
In order for Ascend users to get the white clock you need to download buildprop and replace the one under your system folder with it. You'll have to be rooted and use a file manager or you could use adb shell or a terminal to replace your build.prop
Another change to the build.prop for the popups!!!
Special thanks to yuyuye for the information.
I've attached some screenshots of the theme in action. There are many more changes not visible in the screenshots, the majority of the framework-res have been updated to match the new theme.
UPDATE 12/16
I've attached the metamorph theme in case anyone wants to try it, i would say it's beta quality as it's not finished, but it's usable. Just load the v0.1.zip file on to your sdcard, download metamorph and install away. If you have any basic questions, feel free to ask but I won't be providing an major support yet because it's not finished. I would say it's 75% complete at the most. And as always, you shouldn't have any problems but USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
UPDATE 12/22
New version v0.3 with a change to the submenu, I changed the submenu to white so the text is legible until i can get the Ascend deodexed and properly change the color of the text...
The download labeled GingerbreadAscend3.zip is may specifically for the Ascend I don't recommend anyone apply it on any other phones
The download labeled Gingerbread3.zip is for any and all MDPI phones
Have fun!!!

Insrtuctions for installation:This is a Metamorph theme, so download and install Metamorph. Put the theme on your sdcard. Make sure your phone is rooted, you have busbox downloaded and installed and that usb debugging is turned on
For Ascend users, download your appropriate build.prop file and use a program like root explorer or subfs to copy and paste it into the /system/ directory, if you don't want to purchase one of those programs, download this program from the market "Mount /system (rw / ro)" open it and mount the system as r/w then use adb shell or a terminal emulator to copy the file over
Code:
su
cp /sdcard/build.prop /system/build.prop

UPDATE 2/3
I am no longer supporting this theme, I'm moving on to bigger and better. Happy themeing!!!!
Made a little progress using apk manager to decompile some of the xmls, got the date to show up white but still not the time and popup option menus(not sure what to call them). If anyone has any expertise, I could use the help....
Keep up the good work, I am looking fws to checking it out!
If you send me your framework-res.apk I can fix the code for the pop-up menu text.

Thanks, but problem is I don't have a "values" folder in my framework, much less an xml called "style" in any of the folders...
wait..
I'm an idiot... found it
It wasn't re-compiling the whole framework for me either, i had to to trick it to get it to re-compile the styles.xml by putting it in a different folder and renaming it... Flashed it to my phone.... and... no difference, pulled the framework back down and made sure the changes where present and they are... the Ascend doesn't seem to use those files at all... I'm pretty sure too because i accidentally deleted all the files in the values folder except the styles.xml and the phone works fine...
Thanks for your ideas Benny879, if you have any insight as to whats going on, I'd appreciate any help you could give, in the mean time i'm going to be pouring through these xml files, looking for any clues...
For anyone following the progress on this, the problem seems to be that this phone uses odex files instead of the more easily assessable jar or apks, so I'm looking into deodexing the necessary files... If anyone could offer assistance, I would appreciate it...

The gingerbread metamorph theme I'm working on will change your lock screen sliders, your notification bar and slide down, your dialog confirmation buttons, market place tab button and a bunch of other misc graphics, your signal bars, battery, bluetooth, etc... The theme i'm working on doesn't touch the launcher. i personally use launcher pro, so this theme doesn't conflict with it, but if you want your launcher specifically to look like gingerbread's, you can find themes already made for launcher pro..

Regarding the message bubble design you requested. In order tho have light text on a dark bubble requires decompiling/recompiling the Whattsapp apk and editing the xmls to change the text color. I have tried that in the past, but with little success .. as Whattsapp doestnt seem to be able to recompile properly with the conventional decompiling methods. That is why you will see most mods have only black text on lighter bubbles. Not so easy to do an inverse design.

I am well aware of how to decompile and recompile apks.
The issue is with the Whattsapp apk recompiling after editing the Styles.xml within the res values folder. As many themers have found, there is an issue with recompiling WhatsApp apk after performing such edits. No one seems as yet able to successfully recompile the apk and alter the message bubble text color. You are doing well if you can change the text to inverse using ApkTool.
I myself prefer APK Manager than ApkTool as its command line structure is much better laid out and has more options.

Are you able to change the black bubble text to white (within the speech bubbles)....?
The trouble lays in that part of the modifications.
I have yet to see anyone successfully recompile the Whatsapp.apk (myself included) and have the changes (black text to white) actually work after finalization.
Many have tried editing both the Style.xml and Color.xml.. but the it just don't take after recompiling. The person who cracks this is going to make everyone happy.

Wasnt you happy when i was posting all my posts off topic from the theming of your themes ?
Did i help you or i just imagine your words below ?
Without my help, you would never be able to go deeper in your own theming which comes now to a real development via xmls and smalis !
I wanted sincerely to help you but hey, like you said, you seem to be more proud or ashame for that... i still remember how you posted in my threads with rage and crap **** ...
dont count on me ever to help you and wrong if you think that we dont need help from someone else...

Works for me and others.
Do you have place in your internal memory ( /system ? )
Did you set Permissions to all ?

I love your customizations Yorzua, the best around!
BTW, I installed a modded version of tweetdeck thanks to you Yorzua and I followed the same steps as you did and it worked flawlessly.
Downloaded apk to my Nexus S SD Card, then I open *Root Explorer* (you can use any file explorer with root capabilities: Script Manager - ES FIle Explorer - ROM Toolbox) changed mounting to writeable and moved the modded app to /system/app ..... then changed permissions to file so it reads: rw--r--r--
After doing so, I rebooted my phone open the app drawer and app was there, clicked on it and it works as it is supposed to.
Can you also make a BBMessenger look-a-like..??

Hi, great theme, I like it! But why is it necessary to install your app as system app & reboot? I tried other themes which can be used by just installing them. I'm just curious.

Here we go with a simple guide to make your own font module using my template attached here.
Steps:
1. Download Total Commander from play store (free). Or the apk from https://www.ghisler.com/ce.htm
2. Download my template module from here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/117VFMHzCtoZigOBHm_K8IyzSCF4o3CkL
3. Browse the template using total Commander in one pane. Don't unzip it, just browse the file as it is. Total Commander can do that easily. Browse to System/fonts
4. On the other pane of total Commander browse the fonts that you have prepared in advanced. You can use your favorite recovery flashable font pack, or your custom edited fonts. Rename them exactly as the screenshot. The name should match the font style.
Use fontfix from playstore to open a font and make sure of it's weight, i.e. bold, italic, conde etc.
This are the needed fonts for a complete module (according to my preferences)
5. Select all the fonts and copy them to the System/font folder that is opened on the other pane. Total CMD will pack them to the zip module.
6. Now on to the pane where your module is, go back to the base of your module and edit these two files:
config.sh (just the ui_print here)
module.prop (it's easier here as there are just a few lines)
Edit them by long pressing the files in total cmd and choose Unpack+Edit
In the template you will see xxx. Those are the places that you can edit.
See these example with Lato font:
Config.sh:
Module.prop:
After closing each file, the app will ask you if you want to save the edited file and repack it. Select yes.
Now go one level up in total cmd, rename your zip file as you like and your module is ready to use.
Let see if this works for you.
Let me know if you run into issues and/or something is not clear.
Enjoy!
Pro tip:
If you don't have all the font variants, you can use the closest one to that.
For example, if you miss the medium.ttf variant you can use a copy of the light.ttf one and rename it as xxxMedium.ttf and so on.

I see in the screenshot that your rom is using bold (or regular) fonts for lock screen clock.
You should use light fonts for that. If your room has lock screen clock custom font try to change the font to light instead of bold or regular...
All fonts here do not have the ? In lock screen.
