{Review} Great USB C to Micro USB adapters!

Wanted to do a shoutout to TechMatte Inc for giving me a free sample unit of these micro usb to usb C adapters. I got them in exchange for my unbiased review. So:
First: This is a two pack for a pretty reasonable price. Right now, it's $5 a piece. Not bad.
Second: Quality: These are plastic, but very functional. I have a multitude of micro USB cables from previous phones, and it's nice to be able to have backups laying around, instead of having to buy a bunch of USB C cables now. I leave the adapter plugged into the micro usb cable, and plug the adapter into the phone. Pretty handy at making the old cables still work.
Caveats: Size. This is a plus and a minus-- they would be very easy to lose. Also, the plastic feel. These work very well, but I can also see them starting to fall apart with heavy daily use. Not sure, but it looks like they wouldn't survive abuse.

Can you tell us what chargers you've used this with? Any of the Anker IQ chargers at all? I was looking at these (or similar items) to reuse the Micro USB chargers I have everywhere. Does the phone report that it's plugged into AC (in the Battery info screen), and does it report "Charging" or "Charging Slowly" if you look at the lock screen?
I'd be concerned about using an adapter like this since it could be potentially placing more stress on the phone's USB-C female connector than it was designed to handle. I'd much rather see a short (say 3" or so) Micro USB F to USB-C M adapter cable, so the stress gets relieved a bit by the cable.

Hey I just got these today! They are small and go charge at a decently fast pace even though it only says "charging". I like that it comes in packs of 2 so I can have one in my car and one at home.
It's only been a day, but so far I approve of these.

I just tested using 3 configurations:
Stock LG charger and Cable 5V3A:
"Charging Rapidly" at +2621mA/h
Anker 5V2.4A charger and USB-A to C cable:
"Charging Rapidly" at +1285mA/h
Anker 5V2.4A charger and USB-A to Micro USB cable with USB C adapter:
"Charging" at +1225mA/h

Any thoughts on what the software engineer from Google has to say about the adapter and what potential impact it may have on our devices?
I'm a Software Engineer on the Chrome OS team at Google on the Chromebook Pixel and Pixel C teams.
I bought these two USB-C to Micro USB adapters from TechMatte and found they do not work properly with the Chromebook Pixel.
Upon closer inspection by our engineering team here, we have determined that this adapter is not correctly following the USB Type C specification.

Specifically, these adapters do not charge the Chromebook Pixel 2015 because the adapters leave the C-C lines floating, where the specification requires a Rp pullup to Vbus to identify the cable as a legacy adapter or cable.
Please see the document named "USB Type-C Specification Release 1.1.pdf"
section 4.5.3.2.4 for a description of why the Rp pullup is necessary.
Please also see Section 4.11 and the following note :
1. For Rp when implemented in the USB Type-C plug on a USB Type-C to USB 3.1 Standard-A Cable
Assembly, a USB Type-C to USB 2.0 Standard-A Cable Assembly, a USB Type-C to USB 2.0 Micro-B
Receptacle Adapter Assembly or a USB Type-C captive cable connected to a USB host, a value of 56 k'
± 5% shall be used, in order to provide tolerance to IR drop on V BUS and GND in the cable assembly.
In other words, since you are creating a USB Type-C plug to a USB 2.0 Micro-B receptacle assembly, you must use a resistor of value 56k' as a pullup to Vbus. This cable does not do this.
Please let me know if there is any more information I can provide about why these adapters are problematic.
If you are a consumer looking for a cable that is compatible with Pixel, do not use this one.

Confirmed fast charging longer cables?

Those who have their phone know the cable on the fast charger is 1 meter, which is not long enough to reach any table youd ever have a plug next to.
I tried two different type C -> Type C cables and neither would fast charge with the included wall wart.
Anyone find a longer cable that fast charges with our plugs? 2 meters would be great.

It's tough sledding hacking through all the different Amazon.com listings to get something with an actual USB 3.1 and 3A rating for a 2m cable. The ones I;ve seen are either out of stock, take forever to come from China or overpriced in the $25-30 range. Would love to hear from anyone that actually found one too.

I bought a type C to A from amazon for the computer and it charges rapidly on all my wall chargers down to 2.4 amp.

Monoprice 2.0 six foot c to c cable charges just as fast as the 3 foot cable that came with the phone. High quality stuff. The phone doesn't support higher than 2.0 anyway.

USB 2.0 refers to the data transmission standard and really nothing to do with charging amps. Although, to be USB 3.1 compliant, I think the cable needs to be fairly stout to handle the increased loads in both data speed and charging power. My guess is this cable is in fact 3.1, but someone made a mistake updating the title.

I understand that. Monoprice's 2.0 c to c cable supports up to 3A. No point in spending almost double the price on the 3.1 cable..

What I am saying is that it is hard to even trust the 3A rating with the conflicting statements on 2.0 vs 3.1. Do you have the cable and have tested it? That would be different.

Yes I do have the cable. Monoprice has that 3.1 description on all of their type c cables for some reason. The 2.0 3a cable works just fine.. I just went from 49% to 82% from when I went outside to winterize my boat and when I just went back in to check my phone, not sure how long that was, but a pretty short period of time. I usually put it on the charger when I turn on the TV at night and take it off when it hits 100% before I do to sleep.

I ordered this USB A to C one, http://.ebay.com/itm/261840366171 . The phone says Charging Rapidly. I have not done any data transfer with the computer, but upon plugging it in, the computer detected it ok. It ships from the US, but took a little while with standard shipping. Maybe almost a week;

It might say rapidly charging but I doubt it's as fast as the stock charger. I've used a USB-A to type C cable, got rapidly charging, but it was only max 1800 mAh as opposed to the 2800+ with the stock one.

I dunno about that. I have used a couple 2A Samsung USB chargers with type a to c cable and my phone charges almost as quickly as the stock charger at least in regards of empty to full. I think the difference between the stock and alternate high amp chargers that are around 2A is how quickly it can do a partial quick charge from say 0 to 50% but from 0 to 100% I haven't noticed much of a difference.

I got one of his cables to review... I got it to charge 2.2A + using a 2.4A charger. But I do think you are correct in that there probably isnt a 3A option with anything using USB TYPE-A. 3A seems to be the realm of pure USB TYPE-C.

I purchased this cable and it charges at the same rate as the short OEM cable supplied with the 5x.

Thanks but unfortunately i got it and it didnt work, it just says charging with the stock charger. That sucks because otherwise its a great length and a really nice cable, guess I will have to return it.

That's really odd. Mine registered fast charging immediately. I tested with Ampere multiple times and received the exact same reading with both cables.

Check in! Which wall adapter and USB cable combo are you using?

Just wanted to know which third party wall adapter and USB combo everyone is using for their 5X that meets USB standard and achieves "rapid charging". Please provides links if possible.

I feel your pain! I'm rockin the same set up
I tried a Tronsmart fast charging wall adapter with a USB micro to USB C converter from ebay. I am getting the "rapidly charging" notice but Ampere and GSam both measure ~180 - 1400 mA. That fluctuation was worrying me so i stopped using it. Even at the lower measurements my phone was saying "rapidly charging". I'm not sure why...

At first I was using a techmatte adapter + micro usb and I saw that fusb301/*/fclientur was stating 0...but then my power pack died, so either it died cuz of enough usage, or it died because the techmatte adapter was not compliant. Either way I didn't know how to test, but I'm avoiding using the adapter and I have emailed the techmatte support people

when you try to use a USB A to USB C cord try using this app for your phone. It's extremely simple. Open it, plug in your cord and it turns red if your cord is bad or green if it's good.

that app is only going to help you if you had a USB A to USB C cord. it will let you know if it is compliant. it turned green because you're using a micro usb which wont reach 3A. The plug would turn red if it reaches over 2.1 or 2.4 amps because USB micro cant handle 3 amps. Im honestly not sure how to test those converters for compliance

So I just ordered a Nexus 5X. I am trying to figure out what the deal is with the issues with some USB C cable and what is the best option for aftermarket chargers.
Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems USB A to USB C cables are 2.4A max. USB C to USB C are 3A max. So the way to obtain the fastest charging possible is to have a 3A wall plug and a 3A capable USB C to USB C cable?
I am content with the OEM charger for the house, so I am mainly trying to figure out what to get for a charger for my car. Should I be looking for a 3 Amp car plug and a 3 Amp cable? Or am I looking for 2.4A / 2.4A? I am totally confused.
Also, I read somewhere that the Nexus 5X has a chip on the logic board that makes it fully compatible for Qualcomm Quickcharge 3.0, and that it may be available later on through an update. Anyone heard this? If so I may as well get Quickcharge 3.0 products.
If someone could please explain this whole USB C ordeal I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You!

Sounds like you got the info just right. What's important about A to C is the resistor used and that it meets specifications. If not it'll be asking a charger for 3.0A when it can't give it possibly leading to burning out the charger. For me, I got the Elegiant A to C cables (which are compliant) for older ports since C isn't as readily available. Good for old car chargers, old wall chargers, hotel rooms, shopping center charging stations, etc. C to C is necessary for full rapid charging so I'm waiting for a car charger and compact battery bank that support 3.0A type C.

Thank you for clarifying. I thought I had it right I just wanted to make sure.
Also, I came across a 3A car charger. I already ordered it. There were a couple reviews that stated it wouldn't run at 3A, but there were also reviews stating that it does run on 3A IF you use the USB C port only. (It has a USB and a USB C Port) So I am assuming the people who had issues were probably using the USB side.

I can't find the article I read that stated QC 3.0 (I think they were wrong anyways), but I did hop over to the iFixit Nexus 5X tear down page. I remembered that they always list the IC's on logic boards for their tear downs. Sure enough, the Nexus 5X has the Qualcomm SMB1358 Quick Charge 2.0 IC.

TechMatte USB Type C Cable to USB C Charging / Sync Cable (6.6 FT)

Wanted a longer cable than what is original equipment for my Nexus 5x.
Grabbed this 6 footer and found the following....
A well made cable with good strain relief on the connector ends. The wire is very flexible and easy to position. Doesn't "fight back" like a lot of cables will.
Charges my Nexus 5x at 1200mA when attached to the oem charger. That's enough to charge rapidly.
This is not as much current delivery as the oem cable (1725mA) BUT, this cable is twice as long and well within the expected numbers for its length.
The fastest charging takes place with the shortest cable as current drop is related to the resistance in the cable and more cable equals more resistance.
This length is a great compromise from the stock cable as one is not always within 3' of a wall outlet.

If you want a longer cable that is cable of faster charging you need to buy one of the "out of spec" cables. I have two of the JOTO cables that will do the rapid charging from ports that can supply that much power. They still slow charge from lower output chargers and PC ports though, assuming the hardware you are plugging it into is properly designed and limits output current (everything I have tried is). The JOTO cables are definitely heavier feeling (high quality) than the tech matte cables.

Seconded. My Joto USB A to C cable feels solid and well built, supports rapid charging, and supports USB 3.1 file transfer.

Good to know. That said and acknowledged, my N5x does show "charging rapidly" when attached with this cable to the oem charger.
What is the current draw on your phone, at 50% depletion, when you plug it with your oem charger? Just curious.
Do you know what the threshold is for the device reporting "rapid charge"?

I don't know. Best I can tell charging is 0.9 - 1.9 amps roughly. Slow charging is 0.5-0.7 amps. Rapid charging is anything above 2.0 amps. Seems like these figures should be some where easy to find, but I haven't found them yet.
The only OEM charger I have is the USB C one, so I can't test it with A to C cables. Neither length of my tech matte cables will "charge rapidly" from my Anker charger (Which can provide 2.4 amps to single port), whereas the JOTO cables will. This make sense though, as the 56k pullup resistor in the TechMatte cables should limit current to 0.5a on USB 2.0 ports, and 0.9a on USB 3.0 ports.
All I have is going directly back and forth between the TechMatte (in spec cables) and JOTO (out of spec). My Anker charger will charge rapidly with the JOTO cables, it will not charge rapidly from the TechMatte. Both cables report charging slowly from old 0.5 amp chargers. Both cables pass the Checkr app as well though.

Since this cable is USB C to USB C I don't think the pull up 56k resister would apply to the construction of this cable, would it?
I only have the oem charger with C port in it as well so I can't do any other C to C testing as none of my other device sources have USB C ports.

Haha, so I'm a moron, and didn't realize (read) you got the C only cable. You are correct the 56k only applies to C to A cables.

So, I'm seeing some adapters that have USB-A output and say that they support 5V/3A output.
Do some of these USB 3.1 A to C cables support 5V/3A charging?
I initially read that it would only work with USB-C cables (not the A->C adapter cables)
Am I going to be able to do this, or is an OEM type adapter/cable my only option?
