Is there an OTA path from MRA58K to MRA58R? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know I can wipe and flash the system image or dirty flash, but I'd rather sideload OTAs, to be honest.
If I had been patient for a few days I wouldn't be asking because the OTA file floating around would've taken me straight to MRA58R, but I sideloaded K.
I know there's an OTA from K to N, but is there one from either of them to R?

Riiiiiiiiiiiiight... I already said that. What I was asking is if there's an OTA out there from K or N to R. The only OTA to R seems to be from Lollipop.

I went straight to R from K. Did it in fastboot without losing data.

I got the tgz from Google. Extracted everything into my sdk platform tools and fastboot flashed everything except userdata.img. reroot...and flash twrp again...SuperSU and elite kernel. Took all of 30 minutes tops!

I know I can do that, as I said in the OP, but I was looking for an OTA path as I stated in the title and OP.
I'm not rooted, bootloader is still locked. I'm not unfamiliar with the process of flashing the system image. My OG Droid was running Bugless Beast and my Asus TF201 was running Paranoid Android. I just don't want to go that route with this phone. I want to go with OTAs, even if I have to sideload.

Why. Lol. Waste of time.

so.. if you were walking to a location, and it happened to be on the other side of a cliff, and someone built a bridge there for easy access, you would still prefer to walk all the way around? flashing a factory image is the same thing. you dont need root to do it, you can be completely stock, and will end up completely stock. if you dont know how to do it, is one reason. but, you can always learn how to, it is not difficult.

Thanks for answering the question I actually asked, guys...

My sarcasm is rooted in the fact that I acknowledged their solutions in my OP, said I was looking for the official OTA path and didn't want to use the other solutions, and then either things I said in the OP were repeated as if I didn't say them or alternatives were suggested as if I didn't say I wasn't interested in that path. It seems as though my OP went completely unread. If you opened your eyes you could read them in my OP.
I also figured the path I'm interested in may also be of help to people not comfortable with unlocking their bootloader and performing a complete wipe and flash.
I figured I'd help the community by asking a question that hadn't been directly asked and people would be interested in.

oh, i read your op. and there seems to be some confusion written in it. as its why you were answered to flash a factory image, as that would get rid of your confusion. but, some people dont wish to take the easier and quicker step, and i understand that as well. so, youre going to be stuck waiting for an ota. oh well, life goes on..

Root your phone, that's the easiest way that way you don't have to monkey around with the aforementioned senarios you described, you will save yourself a lot of headaches.

Just go to N and wait for next update. The R is the Verizon 6.0 plus the N security update.

R isn't only VZW. It's only VZW that's pushed R. The repository has had R in it for several days.
But, yeah, everybody else is on N so there should be an update for R soon.
Any noticeable changes from K to N?

Rooting isn't necessary for flashing system images and will actually prevent you from getting OTAs.
I got a Nexus because my Moto X 2014 on VZW isn't going to get Marshmallow. At this point I want official updates without having to back everything up, wipe, apply the update, and then restore. I just want to apply the OTA (either actually Over The Air or the simple process of sideloading) and not have a headache mucking about with everything else.

none
Well i don't think you will have to wait too much longer, as you know the Google phone is always first

I know. I'm impatient. LOL The N6 has been taking surprisingly long to get OTA updates even though the images have been out. It's not like it's not having updates produced, just issues rolling them out.

I would never have a phone and not be able to root it. Do you listen on your headphones? the volume is so low, with rooting the volume can be adjusted, you can nuke all the bloatware, and the flashing you mentioned and backing up, all that can be done in 30 minutes and if you have a rom you like you never have to change it. And the Deved roms are so much better than the stock ones. Better batt life, custom kernels and the the list goes on and on, but everyone has their preferences.
The N6 can be rooted in ten minutes

[Q] [SOLVED] Can't upgrade to .893.

I was running .5.893 and wanted to update to .6.893. I reverted to stock .886 and applied forever root. I then installed the cheesecake app and went to staging and selected the first server. When I checked for update, it said I was up to date. Is there a way to flash the update without cheesecake, and if so, does anyone have a link to the update files?
EDIT:
Here is a solution provided by thejdog55 below. Thanks jdog.
Here's what I did:
Nandroid
One click back to stock and root/forever root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...62&postcount=1
Download this: http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/d...tml#post106190
Copy the file to SD card and boot into CWM and flash that. It will get your system up to 5.5.893, and reboot.
DL this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=450
Copy the 5.6.893 file to SD card and boot into STOCK RECOVERY(power down, hold volume down, then power on. Hold both volume buttons while in fast boot and press the power button)
Click apply zip from SD Card, make sure you choose the 5.6.983 file, it's going to say 5.5.893 so you may want to delete the 5.5.893 system zip so you don't get confused.
Nandroid again, this way if another update comes out, which 5.7.893 was just found, you can just restore to this and update instead of having to go through the whole process.
After it's done boot up and then you can boot back into CWM and restore your nandroid you made in the very beginning. The 5.6.893 updates the LTE radio mostly, but it seems to correct a problem 5.5.893 was having when switching between modes and losing data connection
The bootloader unlock research thread and Cheesecake thread have a lot more information, so I'd say read all of that before doing this because you don't want to mess up. If you don't really understand what I'm talking about RESEARCH! A lot! Rootzwiki and mydroidworld forums have a lot of information as well.
Hey dude, questions go in general! Not to mention, there are about 100000 threads already talking about the same thing. Maybe search before you post, and read!

Gee with all the policing of threads you do, you would think they would make you a moderator already. Although maybe the fact that they have not should tell you to calm down a little. I have looked for threads, and searched. I have not seen anyone with the same issue of no update being identified.
You constantly tell people to search when the issue they are raising has not been raised before. Please think next time before you flame someone for the thousandth time. I am sure many people feel the same way.

I can use the search button. What I cannot do is find an answer to my problem. You have responded twice, in neither case did you provide any help, but only scolded. If you were not going to be helpful, there is no reason for you to respond. Therefore, the only reason I can think of is that you get some feeling of joy being superior to others, and insulting them. I can assure you it is not just me and ddv who have been having this problem, and there is no place where a solution is easily found. If we can find the answer here, I can change the OP to let others know what to do. This will actually help avoid extra threads. [Video Guide] My Super User Friendly Nexus 4 Root Guide

Hey everyone. Some of you may know me from my YouTube channel
Well, i noticed that there a lot of video guides on YouTube that still seem a bit overwhelming for the beginner rooter / first timer.
So, using mskips Nexus 4 Toolkit v1.3 i decided to put together a video that is a bit longer because i wanted to explain some thing and take it a little slower for everyone.
So here ya go. I hope it helps
creds to mskip for his Nexus 4 Toolkit!
If anyone has any issues with the above method. I strongly recommend you go to the Nexus 4 Toolkit thread by mskip ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688 ) and read the FAQ / trouble shoot section. If you need to, leave a post there with your issue, as most folks in that thread are very helpful.
If all else fails, then i'll do my best. The reason i ask you go there first, as a lot of you know, i am VERY busy running my YouTube channel. Reviewing gadgets, products, ROMs, apps and recording, editing and uploading videos. So my time is very limited.
Cheers,
Jared
Moved to General, and sticked
I'll be taking a look at this tonight, cheers....
Thanks, sounds like exactly what I need!
The video says the toolkit will work for 4.2.1, but will it also work for 4.2.2?
Thanks! That's great, I'm giving you a "Thanks button" pressed :good:
Just a question ... using opcion 4 in the first menu, you can only root and no more than root your phone? I mean ... not installing any recovery, just unlock bootloader and root, to be "OTAupgradeable".
So then, on the submenu that appears when you choose option 4, there are more options.

If you look at rooting options what's the exact diferences between the 1, 2, 3 and 4 options?
I need Busybox to be rooted? What does Busybox do? Having your Nexus 4 rooted and not Busybox installed is a problem?
What's different about being root between options 1 and 3? option 3 installs a recovery, isn't it? So if u wanna be only root, u should use options 1 or 2 (2 with busybox). That's it?
And I pressume option 4 is needed in order to use option 5 for a totally restore option.
Thanks again (sorry I can't ask that on nexus toolkit thread yet as I just posted 5 messages!)
appreciate the long video - even for a semi vet - Rooted and Ready to Go :good:
you threw in some history and some random info - made it less boring.
look forward to your future vids.
Thank You
Maybe it would be better if you made a video guide showing how to do all these things with the official "toolkit" Fastboot & ADB. Maybe people would learn something that way, instead of just pressing a number and enter on their keyboard.
Just sayin'
Thanks Man....really guide me through the root process :fingers-crossed:
Thank you much....................

I am curious about it, too, although it isn't too big a deal since I don't have much on my Nexus 4 yet.
But what I would really like is to have my Nexus 4 rooted without custom recoveries. I know many here scorn at the "stock" ROM, but I had an unpleasant experience with a custom recovery in the past and if possible I would like to avoid custom recoveries. I got it done on my Nexus 7 (stock ROM, rooted, no custom recovery) but I haven't found a straight-forward guide for Nexus 4 yet. (that doesn't mention custom recoveries)

QFT.
When I first joined the Android scene (coming from an iPhone 4), I was instinctively drawn to the 'toolkits' because they offered something similar to the iOS jailbreak programs. A one-click solution. However, I have come to learn that rooting, unlike jailbreaking, is a far more delicate procedure and you cannot take shortcuts.
As a matter of fact, now that I am familiar with ADB and fastboot, I find them a lot easier and quicker to use than the toolkits! You literally just type a few lines and watch the magic happen. It's also far more rewarding than just typing a number into a keyboard.
Having said all this, I think toolkits should still be used as a fall-back option and/or for people comfortable with ADB and fastboot, so kudos to the OP for the informative video.
Whats the easiest root method for Macbook's/OSX?
Waiting for mine to get here in the mail tomorrow so thanks for putting this together.

Phils advanced touch RECOVERY. Waste of a thread, research before posting. This is a custom recovery that cannot be flashed onto our phone because of a locked bootloader and has nothing to do with root. An exploit is needed to root the Verizon and AT&T variant.. and it has not been found yet.

As long as we're itching for root, there's going to plenty of wasted threads around here, and we're going to read them too regardless of whether or not we believe them.
What's worse is it's just a link whore traffic write up. That site loses all credibility.
Love, from GS5 locked bootloader hell.

I realised that after I posted it. I was at work and Hella tired.
So I go and search the tech beast site to find a story about it so I can post a comment about the bootloader being locked. I noticed their comments are heavily moderated and need approved first, we will see if it gets approved or not. If not, here is a screenshot of my comment and a link to the page I was reading about.

The site that hosts /created that story should be black-listed forever. There is no excuse for it. Like you said, they have sort of a disclaimer half way down the page...
******At&t’s Galaxy S5′s bootloader isn’t unlocked yet. You will be only able to flash this recovery if you get it unlocked, till then the following method will not work.******
...but why even have the story if not for fraud? The Author of that story needs to explain what they think the meaning of "Journalistic Integrity" is. By the way, he also has an article claiming the same thing for Verizon's S5.
That entire site needs taken down.
Here is the Author's G+ page...let him know what you think about his tactics.

Here is his Twitter account

In case anyone is thinking this guy should be cut some slack, I will remind you he is the same Aothor that wrote this BS story...
"How To Unroot & Flash Stock Firmware On Samsung Galaxy S5 [All Variants]"
http://techbeasts.com/2014/05/10/ho...k-firmware-on-samsung-galaxy-s5-all-variants/
The title says it all. The article does mention (halfway through) that it is only for the models listed below (in the article), but why say "ALL VARIANTS" to begin with? This guys tactics are deplorable.
Here is "Techbeasts" contact us page:

We both know people that use these tactics don't comply with any sort of integrity. Weekly World News and The Enquirer both get this sort of feedback as well. He's using these tactics for a reason. "Heavily moderated" is an understatement, that whore article has 0 comments. If he allowed any comments he'd have at least 30+ from brethren here at XDA.
Update**
Mr. Usama, M. replied to my concerns with the following Email:
"You need to open your eyes and read the note in these posts carefully. It is clearly mentioned that this can't be done until there is a method to unlock bootloader."
...and my reply back was...
"So you feel it is OK to make a tutorial about something that can not be done? My eyes are open...you need to stop deceiving people for the sake of Internet traffic."
So, he admits to knowing it can't be done, yet still knowingly posts an article with the title SPECIFICALLY for the AT&T S5 on how to do what can't be done?
The guy is a parasite.
I soft bricked my s5 trying flashing a tmo s5 custom recovery and a tmo s5 custom rom , I wanted to see if the bootloader was really locked, it is. And I was able to flash regular stock att firmware using Odin. So when I tried to boot the recovery, it opened the custom recovery I had flashed on there before, then it went to the screen where it says, att doesn't recognize this as blah blah blah... Now I can't boot up my recovery without that happening. I can boot the phone up but not the recovery.???

OTA updates on unlocked bootloader 5.1
I've got a turbo that I unlocked using sunshine and put on twrp and SuperSU. Now it keeps downloading an update and I can't seem to stop it. While I can delete the downloaded file it keeps coming back and giving the full screen "update ready" prompt.
Unless I am mistaken I should not take the OTA. I tried the FOTAkill.apk route but that hasn't stopped it from downloading the update file.
What can I do at this point? It is driving me crazy. I don't really want a different ROM as I like the stock moto feature and don't want to kill camera performance.
Thanks!
Put a .bak at the end of the apk. Then reboot
Just to be clear I should put that at the end of the OTA .apk after it downloads?
No your phone already has the apk on it and by adding the .bak to the end your phone will no longer look for updates. I feel foolish for not mentioning that CF does amazing work with the stock based ROM, it's definitely worth checking out. I have had zero issues with his rom and am thankful he shares his work with us because my phone just keeps running better and better. Thank you CF!
It seems to have worked! Thank you!
anybody know how to downgrade to .44 from .49???
Unfortunately you can't.
Bootloader and root
I have been trying to find a reliable means to unlock my bootloader so i can root my droid turbo. Unfortunately i found this site after ota updates that i thought were manditory to keep my phone running smoothly. Now that i realize my noob mistake everything i have been finding seems to indicate its too late to fix anything now. my build is past the 44_44 is there a way to unlock the bootloader even a paid way would work for me as long as it will work. Im a bit reluctant to spend money on things im not possitive will work especially since unlocking bootloaders and rooting is frowned upon by some. im also worried that if i purchase something that doesnt work ill be unable to get a refund due to the nature of what i am purchasing. If anyone can offer ideas that i havnt considered to unlock my bootloader or maybe even root without it i would greatly appreciate it. even if there are some experimental things i could try id be willing to donate if the process works to accomplish what i am trying to do. thanks in advance and if there is no way to do this i understand fully.

Thanks for the reply. The sunshine app keeps force closing during the testing phase. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no luck.

Android version 5.1
I know my build and kernel are past the version that the bootloader is currently for, which is why I'm trying to find another way

Turbo now 3G
Please be kind, have a Droid Turbo on Page Plus, all stock, running fine for a few months with 4G. Yesterday I thought I would be really smart and do the *22890 programming. Now I have a 3G Turbo. Customer service saying they can be of no help, "I shouldn't have used the programming on my 4G device." Is there a fix to return the Turbo to 4G? My apologies if this is the wrong place for this question.

I don't know the answer but I don't believe the Turbo required special programming (like some older Motorola phones) to work with Pageplus .
So the issue is the on the Phone or On the sim card.
Guess I would reflash the firmware with RSD Lite, if that doesn't fix it, get a new sim card.
Another option, swap sim cards with someone else, you don't need to tell Page plus, just needs to be a nano sim compatible phone
Ether the sim car works in other phones or not, I switch devices fairly often, and have used the current sim card in 6+ devices (really have't kept track)
What system version/ build version is on the phone?

Was told by Page Plus the programming was not for a 4G device, that I turned it into a 3G device. The system version is 23.21.49.quark_verizon.verizon.en.US.vzw, and the build is SU4TL-49. Thanks for your response!

I'm sure Pageplus customer service has no idea how to flash the firmware, or what that does.
The bootloader is locked? if yes just flash the SUTL-49 firmware with RSD Lite
Links in the Index

If the bootloader is unlocked you could try just installing the STUL-49 radio in TWRP

You've installed a cracked APK and are asking for help because something went wrong? And then say cmon man when I suggest something? As well as something as rudimental as as a screen shot.
Lol good luck with that.

Wiping the phone yes. What I meant was. Once phone was set up and established with the issue present, does wiping data from the problematic application fix it, temporarily or not
I'll be honest, if I didn't know you were talking about an android phone then I would query if it was a rootkit virus. As it seems embedded on a very low level..
I honestly couldn't advise if that's possible on android but the symptoms are pretty compelling to say the least.
Against my better judgement here, I would advise installing an antivirus (only for a scan) specifically one that would eliminate a rootkit.
Does malwarebytes have an android alternative?? If so then try that.
Beyond that the only thing you can do if the problem is returning each time you perform a full wipe would be a firmware installation with a fresh firmware file.
It's not possible to remain beyond that unless a rootkit is possible on an android phone. .
Edit: as suspected, rootkits do exist for android, so I would put my money on that. A wipe won't fix it and you (if I'm correct) have a back door into your device. So it has to be eliminated before you use it for day to day tasks / business / personal use.
Don't enter anything personal at all unless you have to to get the job done.
You need bespoke software in order to remove it.
If I isn't that then a new firmware should fix the issue.
Lastly, I know you're not an idiot. I was just trying to get more info, I couldn't see screenshots, using the same app for xda and now I can.

Perfect, i would avoid banking or entering personal details until that point.
The 190 firmware will not lock down your bootloader either so you're quite safe, please double / triple check that you're not on a later firmware.
Actually isn't 190 a 9.0.0 firmware?
Please check before proceeding, all instructions are in the guide.
"We misuderstood each other early... Sorry for that and thanks for info.."
No problem man, good luck. You'll be fine.
