[Q] Is this root? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

Anyone seen this to root our phones? Philz advanced touch recovery for sm g900a. I saw it on techbeasts website.

I just read that, I want to believe it but I think it's just a fake article to generate traffic.

Yeah I didn't see any other comments about it.

Also I'm via Tapatalk but all the links in the article seem to be bs. Confirm?

Here are the pre-installation instructions:
1. This guide is only for At&t Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900A. Before installing this, make sure that your device is listed below. Check your device’s model number in Settings > More > About Device.
2. At&t’s Galaxy S5 by default is locked. You need to unlock the device first in order to flash this custom recovery.
3. Download the file carefully for your device.

from the techbeast website. Doubtful.

So if I even try to flash this recovery with odin, I'll most likely brick my device

It won't brick it...The recovery just won't flash.

Ok. Maybe I will give it a shot when I get off work. I'll report back if it works or not.

It will not work. ODIN will not flash anything with a locked bootloader.

Phils advanced touch RECOVERY. Waste of a thread, research before posting. This is a custom recovery that cannot be flashed onto our phone because of a locked bootloader and has nothing to do with root. An exploit is needed to root the Verizon and AT&T variant.. and it has not been found yet.

As long as we're itching for root, there's going to plenty of wasted threads around here, and we're going to read them too regardless of whether or not we believe them.

What's worse is it's just a link whore traffic write up. That site loses all credibility.

I realised that after I posted it. I was at work and Hella tired.

So I go and search the tech beast site to find a story about it so I can post a comment about the bootloader being locked. I noticed their comments are heavily moderated and need approved first, we will see if it gets approved or not. If not, here is a screenshot of my comment and a link to the page I was reading about.

The site that hosts /created that story should be black-listed forever. There is no excuse for it. Like you said, they have sort of a disclaimer half way down the page...
******At&t’s Galaxy S5′s bootloader isn’t unlocked yet. You will be only able to flash this recovery if you get it unlocked, till then the following method will not work.******
...but why even have the story if not for fraud? The Author of that story needs to explain what they think the meaning of "Journalistic Integrity" is. By the way, he also has an article claiming the same thing for Verizon's S5.
That entire site needs taken down.
Here is the Author's G+ page...let him know what you think about his tactics.
https://plus.google.com/+UsamaMujtaba/posts
Here is his Twitter account

In case anyone is thinking this guy should be cut some slack, I will remind you he is the same Aothor that wrote this BS story...
"How To Unroot & Flash Stock Firmware On Samsung Galaxy S5 [All Variants]"
http://techbeasts.com/2014/05/10/ho...k-firmware-on-samsung-galaxy-s5-all-variants/
The title says it all. The article does mention (halfway through) that it is only for the models listed below (in the article), but why say "ALL VARIANTS" to begin with? This guys tactics are deplorable.
Here is "Techbeasts" contact us page:

Feel free to contact them and let them know what you think about these tactics, I did.

We both know people that use these tactics don't comply with any sort of integrity. Weekly World News and The Enquirer both get this sort of feedback as well. He's using these tactics for a reason. "Heavily moderated" is an understatement, that whore article has 0 comments. If he allowed any comments he'd have at least 30+ from brethren here at XDA.

Update**
Mr. Usama, M. replied to my concerns with the following Email:
"You need to open your eyes and read the note in these posts carefully. It is clearly mentioned that this can't be done until there is a method to unlock bootloader."
...and my reply back was...
"So you feel it is OK to make a tutorial about something that can not be done? My eyes are open...you need to stop deceiving people for the sake of Internet traffic."
So, he admits to knowing it can't be done, yet still knowingly posts an article with the title SPECIFICALLY for the AT&T S5 on how to do what can't be done?
The guy is a parasite.

I soft bricked my s5 trying flashing a tmo s5 custom recovery and a tmo s5 custom rom , I wanted to see if the bootloader was really locked, it is. And I was able to flash regular stock att firmware using Odin. So when I tried to boot the recovery, it opened the custom recovery I had flashed on there before, then it went to the screen where it says, att doesn't recognize this as blah blah blah... Now I can't boot up my recovery without that happening. I can boot the phone up but not the recovery.???

Hello friends .. Sorry for my poor English .. Turns out I have an American Tab Galaxy (Claro - Argentina) and inexperience try version 2.3.3 upgrade to a European, JQ1. but at the end of me flashing the screen goes black and only the lights .. Someone can tell me the steps to revive the Tab? Since I saw several ways, but which will not correct .. I await your responses .. Thank you very much!
Greetings!
First, this is a development forum, how you even posted here with only 3 posts is beyond me... Your question should have been asked in *gasp* the question/answer forum.
We need far more information from you in order to give you an accurate answer.
1) What is the exact model number of your tab
2) What did you use to flash with and what files did you attempt to flash?
3) What state is your tab currently in? Does it show ANYTHING when plugged into the wall with the stock charging cable?
Hope we can help.

Chill out, please, for everyones sake. You are not helping anyone. In fact, some people would label you a troll.

My apologies friend, the truth that I was complicated by the English, so all this ..
Start from the beginning .. My Galaxy Tab is the GT-P1000L, originally came with the P1000XWJK1 version, but I try to install the Kernel v1.4.7 OVERCOME, and there comes the problem, because when you turn the device did not work the touch system. When that happened, what Hise was updated to version P1000XXJMQ once update finished with Odin, the team only lit buttons below, but the screen did not light .. After that, the upgrade to the version P1000LVJJM9 of America, he returned to light the screen, but stays in the logo of Samsung (I leave 1 hour and still the same) and that's it .. I can do?
Thank you very much!

Typing in caps is usually taken as yelling or screaming. Then you had two posts when editing the first would have been fine. But not just that, you really had nothing to say that contributed to the conversation, it was just ranting really, about something I had already addressed.
My mother used to tell me "If you don't have anything productive to add to a conversation, then stay out of it." ... now if only my hall monitor of a boss would abide by that rule.

Kosh is correct, your Tab isn't dead, yet. You actually have a Latin tab, not an "American" one. Follow the guide he posted and you should be going on your way.
In the future, try to remember the fact that you have a P1000L ... This is important, as not all kernels and ROMs will run on this version.
You may want to hunt around and try to restock the tab. ... I can't believe I'm about to suggest this, but perhaps if the link above doesn't flash properly you will need to use a firmware from samfirmwares.com ... just be very wary about flashing, it can be dangerous.
If we can help anymore, let us know!

Well, universally, caps = screaming, which is how a LOT of people interprete it. Trying using the bold tag instead to highlight something Fairly easy to just type {B} {/B} (Those being [] obviously) over something
And yes, I have no idea how he managed to post in the Dev section... Maybe a MOD needs to look into that.

So what term did you Google? Because I seriously doubt you've tried. Anyway, if you do decide to unlock the bootloader, promise me you'll backup your TA partition first. Don't even Google for that, just browse the XDA Z1 forums. I promise you you'll find the links you're after.
You say you googled it...This is the only way to do it

As for wanting to pay someone to do it for you, please read this

then you will be better at doing it for yourself
If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask or PM me, but please do try for yourself first

I just provided you with help.
Look at the link I gave you, its not sarcastic, it takes you to the site where you unlock your bootloader.
I also spend a lot of my time on here helping people, and many people have helped me. Apologies if you think I was time wasting, I am just trying to get you going on the right track without leading you by the nose. Trust you learn more by doing it yourself, finding out by yourself and asking for guidance is the best way.

OK no bootloader unlock for you then.
Also, the firware you are on cannot be rooted.
You need to flash a .534 FW (Find them in the mega collection int he general section) and flash it on flashtool from here. Then you can root it using kingo.
If you want to upgrade to the latest FW then you will need to install dual recovery (Look in the original dev section) then flash a pre rooted rom from the dev section.

Our point is that asking such questions is just cluttering up the forums and wasting peoples time since the answers are easily available by browsing the stickied topics (or searching for that matter). If we just answer all of your "10 second questions", then we set a standard where it's OK to post a topic like this, and as a result we will likely end up with hundreds of topics asking the same simple question as this one. It's just not an appealing idea and so we meet questions like this with a bit of resistance in order to set a more maintainable and educationally conductive standard.
Do you understand my point?

But actually, the most common reason for locking bootloaders is to stop the customer from unlocking the bootloader, finding a hack to unlock the baseband and switching carriers, it makes sense that with a carrier locked device the bootloader isn't unlockable.

Yes, but you can sim unlock and still have the bootloader unlockable, and vice versa.

Is there an OTA path from MRA58K to MRA58R?

I know I can wipe and flash the system image or dirty flash, but I'd rather sideload OTAs, to be honest.
If I had been patient for a few days I wouldn't be asking because the OTA file floating around would've taken me straight to MRA58R, but I sideloaded K.
I know there's an OTA from K to N, but is there one from either of them to R?

Riiiiiiiiiiiiight... I already said that. What I was asking is if there's an OTA out there from K or N to R. The only OTA to R seems to be from Lollipop.
I went straight to R from K. Did it in fastboot without losing data.

I know I can do that, as I said in the OP, but I was looking for an OTA path as I stated in the title and OP.
I'm not rooted, bootloader is still locked. I'm not unfamiliar with the process of flashing the system image. My OG Droid was running Bugless Beast and my Asus TF201 was running Paranoid Android. I just don't want to go that route with this phone. I want to go with OTAs, even if I have to sideload.
Why. Lol. Waste of time.

so.. if you were walking to a location, and it happened to be on the other side of a cliff, and someone built a bridge there for easy access, you would still prefer to walk all the way around? flashing a factory image is the same thing. you dont need root to do it, you can be completely stock, and will end up completely stock. if you dont know how to do it, is one reason. but, you can always learn how to, it is not difficult.
Thanks for answering the question I actually asked, guys...

My sarcasm is rooted in the fact that I acknowledged their solutions in my OP, said I was looking for the official OTA path and didn't want to use the other solutions, and then either things I said in the OP were repeated as if I didn't say them or alternatives were suggested as if I didn't say I wasn't interested in that path. It seems as though my OP went completely unread. If you opened your eyes you could read them in my OP.
I also figured the path I'm interested in may also be of help to people not comfortable with unlocking their bootloader and performing a complete wipe and flash.
I figured I'd help the community by asking a question that hadn't been directly asked and people would be interested in.

oh, i read your op. and there seems to be some confusion written in it. as its why you were answered to flash a factory image, as that would get rid of your confusion. but, some people dont wish to take the easier and quicker step, and i understand that as well. so, youre going to be stuck waiting for an ota. oh well, life goes on..

Root your phone, that's the easiest way that way you don't have to monkey around with the aforementioned senarios you described, you will save yourself a lot of headaches.
Just go to N and wait for next update. The R is the Verizon 6.0 plus the N security update.

R isn't only VZW. It's only VZW that's pushed R. The repository has had R in it for several days.
But, yeah, everybody else is on N so there should be an update for R soon.
Any noticeable changes from K to N?

Rooting isn't necessary for flashing system images and will actually prevent you from getting OTAs.
I got a Nexus because my Moto X 2014 on VZW isn't going to get Marshmallow. At this point I want official updates without having to back everything up, wipe, apply the update, and then restore. I just want to apply the OTA (either actually Over The Air or the simple process of sideloading) and not have a headache mucking about with everything else.
none
Well i don't think you will have to wait too much longer, as you know the Google phone is always first

I know. I'm impatient. LOL The N6 has been taking surprisingly long to get OTA updates even though the images have been out. It's not like it's not having updates produced, just issues rolling them out.

I would never have a phone and not be able to root it. Do you listen on your headphones? the volume is so low, with rooting the volume can be adjusted, you can nuke all the bloatware, and the flashing you mentioned and backing up, all that can be done in 30 minutes and if you have a rom you like you never have to change it. And the Deved roms are so much better than the stock ones. Better batt life, custom kernels and the the list goes on and on, but everyone has their preferences.
The N6 can be rooted in ten minutes

OTA updates on unlocked bootloader 5.1
I've got a turbo that I unlocked using sunshine and put on twrp and SuperSU. Now it keeps downloading an update and I can't seem to stop it. While I can delete the downloaded file it keeps coming back and giving the full screen "update ready" prompt.
Unless I am mistaken I should not take the OTA. I tried the FOTAkill.apk route but that hasn't stopped it from downloading the update file.
What can I do at this point? It is driving me crazy. I don't really want a different ROM as I like the stock moto feature and don't want to kill camera performance.
Thanks!
Put a .bak at the end of the apk. Then reboot
Just to be clear I should put that at the end of the OTA .apk after it downloads?
No your phone already has the apk on it and by adding the .bak to the end your phone will no longer look for updates. I feel foolish for not mentioning that CF does amazing work with the stock based ROM, it's definitely worth checking out. I have had zero issues with his rom and am thankful he shares his work with us because my phone just keeps running better and better. Thank you CF!
It seems to have worked! Thank you!
anybody know how to downgrade to .44 from .49???
Unfortunately you can't.
Bootloader and root
I have been trying to find a reliable means to unlock my bootloader so i can root my droid turbo. Unfortunately i found this site after ota updates that i thought were manditory to keep my phone running smoothly. Now that i realize my noob mistake everything i have been finding seems to indicate its too late to fix anything now. my build is past the 44_44 is there a way to unlock the bootloader even a paid way would work for me as long as it will work. Im a bit reluctant to spend money on things im not possitive will work especially since unlocking bootloaders and rooting is frowned upon by some. im also worried that if i purchase something that doesnt work ill be unable to get a refund due to the nature of what i am purchasing. If anyone can offer ideas that i havnt considered to unlock my bootloader or maybe even root without it i would greatly appreciate it. even if there are some experimental things i could try id be willing to donate if the process works to accomplish what i am trying to do. thanks in advance and if there is no way to do this i understand fully.

Turbo now 3G
Please be kind, have a Droid Turbo on Page Plus, all stock, running fine for a few months with 4G. Yesterday I thought I would be really smart and do the *22890 programming. Now I have a 3G Turbo. Customer service saying they can be of no help, "I shouldn't have used the programming on my 4G device." Is there a fix to return the Turbo to 4G? My apologies if this is the wrong place for this question.

I don't know the answer but I don't believe the Turbo required special programming (like some older Motorola phones) to work with Pageplus .
So the issue is the on the Phone or On the sim card.
Guess I would reflash the firmware with RSD Lite, if that doesn't fix it, get a new sim card.
Another option, swap sim cards with someone else, you don't need to tell Page plus, just needs to be a nano sim compatible phone
Ether the sim car works in other phones or not, I switch devices fairly often, and have used the current sim card in 6+ devices (really have't kept track)
What system version/ build version is on the phone?

Was told by Page Plus the programming was not for a 4G device, that I turned it into a 3G device. The system version is 23.21.49.quark_verizon.verizon.en.US.vzw, and the build is SU4TL-49. Thanks for your response!

I'm sure Pageplus customer service has no idea how to flash the firmware, or what that does.
The bootloader is locked? if yes just flash the SUTL-49 firmware with RSD Lite

What apps from telcel? I think some stores were going to sell the telcel version, but that version was unlocked.
I actually bought mine from amazon and came with a telcel sleeve over the box, but no telcel apps. My phone's bootloader says my software is "modified" which is really weird, and it doesn't have a recovery installed... WTF?
I think the telcel apps could have been installed when recovering a backup from your google account?
Though it is weird as **** that the software is custom in your phone, modified and mine, and I don't have a freaking recovery.
PS: don't buy from liverpool. Sometimes they add something in their page that you don't actually have and you end up waiting for months xD

And yeah, I agree with you about the store, but my wife give her phone to mama, and I give mine to her (Redmi 4a) so I was in a hurry, that... And... I have no Credit card so I have to use Liverpool awfull services :v
Well, thanks, I have just to wait untill some dev take care of rom development, I am a Xiaomi user since 2011 so, will be great if I see some MIUI love for this phone, best regards!

Hi,
So, you say that you have already obtained the unlock code in the Motorola's webpage? So great!
Just a quicke , looking to get the G6 Plus but noticed no forum for Plus is there a reason ? My first thought was as US not getting the Plus Model ? Is that daft ?
And I'm torn between the P20 lite and G6 plus roughly around same price mark £269 For Plus and £299 for P20 lite , what should I go for ? Any help much appreciated [emoji16]

How to stop the clock flashing when idle
Just got a G6 Plus. Whenever I press the power button to put the phone into standby, the screen shuts off as it should, but within seconds the clock flashes and the screen then switches off again. The phone then continues to do this every 20 seconds or so and it's driving me nuts. A quick Google shows posts relating to earlier versions of the phone which either say it's a Motorola thing you need to live with, or suggest switching off the Moto display setting. I can't find any such setting and have tried playing with notification settings but nothing works. I had a G4 and G5 and never had this issue before so find it hard to believe it's a Motorola thing. Any suggestions on how I can stop this? Thanks in advance.
