Check Cable Compatibility - Nexus 6P Themes and Apps

I ran across this helpful little app and thought it may help others to check there cables. All of my google cables checked out okay but the one C to USB cable I got at amazon was not compatible with my 6P. good thing it only cost $8.00
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.mderezynski.checkr

Here's a write up Gizmodo did on what cables will work - http://gizmodo.com/a-google-enginee...source=gizmodo_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow

Here is a Google Spreadsheet of what compatible and what's not.

I've heard all about these 'compatible' cables, in fact I have one of the unsupported/out-of-spec cables and it seems to work fine. What are the consequences of me continuing to use this cable?

Cable or charger but not the phone? I thought with all this USB type c stuff it was suppose to 'intelligently' calibrate chargers and devices to prevent damage or an I thinking of something else?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

yes when it's USB-C to USB-C, not when it's USB-C connector to USB-A which does not conform to USB-C specs. Makes sense?

Yeah OK that makes sense. Just seems like a step backwards in regards to acquiring and using cables. I'll now be hesitant of using any USB A-C cables that are are unknown or cannot be tested at the time.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

I have an USB B to C adapter (2 pack) from D&K which, according to this app says it is fine, but according to the google doc's spreadsheet it does not meet the requirements. Hmmmm.....
My Orly 4 pack of USB A to C does not register as compliant which agrees to the spreadhsheet of compatible products. Wonder how accurate this app is????

Quick question!!! If the cable is not safe to recharge the cable is it safe to only transfer file into the phone ?

Good question. I'm not sure if its safe or not but I did transfer some files from my laptop to my 6p with no issues. But as soon as I found out that the cable was not compatible I stop using it. Didn’t want to damage the USB port on my laptop.

I bought two cables from amazon and one of them is probably out of spec - it rapid charges my 6p. But given its purpose (to quickly charge my phone from my anker power bank) I like the extra speed in charging. Any real harm in using it? The power bank is qc2.0 compliant so its used to having a large draw on it.

Thanks for this.

I bought a generic cable from eBay. I checked both the supplied USB a to C cable with the phone and the generic one. Both cables passed the test. However after about 3 weeks I ran the test again, now it is showing me both Google and the generic one fail the test.

[Q] LT30p not charging or connectin using old HTC microUSB cables

Hello all,
so, this is driving me nuts. I have two HTC microUSB cables that I've been using with my old phone that for some reason don't seem to work at all with the new xperia T. I can only charge it and connect it using the stock sony cable or the (very long) cable that came with my Kindle. I tried with 3 different wall chargers (Sony, LG and generic wall outlet splitter with USB): all of them charge the phone using Sony and Kindle cable, none using the HTC cables. Anyone has any idea WTF is happening?
Thanks!
Based on my friend's experience, HTC tends to make cables that work only for their device. I'm not 100% sure.
Humans have evolved to be smarter, but there's one thing we can't get rid off. It's human stupidity.

I think there are different versions of the cable, if you take a close look at the end which goes into your phone you may be able to count a different number of connections....

Well, both cables used to charge also my LG p500 without any issue. I'd be more inclined to say that the fault is on Sony's side as of now.

I envy you very much indeed.
So, to sum it up, it can't be anything to do with the phone itself, but it seems to be some kind of incompatibility between the USB plug and socket. This is kinda crappy. Last thing I want is to buy yet another cable. Haven't they decided to use the same standard to avoid this kind of crap???
Thnaks to all of you btw!
Just use the cable that came with the phone for PC connection and the other ones for charging...
They don't work either way. It's like they don't even connect. Point is I don't understand why. It's just a cable. Anyway, thanks for all the input.

Some cables are manufactured not to work with most phones. Just like how we can't use our plug (for the wall socket) to charge an Apple device.

My previous experience doesn't seem to comply with what you just said. I've been exchanging chargers and cables between 1 LG phone, 1 HTC phone and an iPhone 4, and all the combinations work. The problem has arisen with the new Xperia T. I'll go to a Sony center and see what they have to say about it.
Cheers!
The t/x/v have faster higher rated chargers so some old ones don't work, I can't use old 2011 Line charger or moto charger but can use an earlier v8 charger...

A powered USB hub should work Just test it out, the worst thing that could happen is that it will boot stock image, just pull the power to stop it.
Hey guys.
I'm in NYC for a few days and I'm looking for an OTG cable, powered or not. At best buy and at radioshack they look at me like I'm asking for the impossible. I'll be in towns until Tuesday, and I'd like to ask if anyone knows a store where I could buy this cable.
Thanks in advance.

Sorry to say, I have yet to see a powered OTG cable in a retail store, even my geeky local "has a majority of stuff Monoprice carries" store does not have this particular type of cable.
If B&H Photo/Video has these in stock, it should work (but it'll cost more than getting the OTG cable on eBay)
Pioneer DJC-WeCAi 2.6' DJ Controller Cable - $29.00
Neutrik NAUSB-B USB Female Type-A to Type-B Converter - $5.21 (If you can find an equivalent that's not designed for panel mount, all the better)
Comprehensive On-The-Go USB A Female to Micro USB B Male Adapter Cable (4") - $2.99
-OR- NTW USB Type A Female To Micro USB Type B 5-pin On-the-Go (OTG) Pigtail Adapter - 4" - $5.99
-OR- StarTech Micro USB Male to USB OTG Host Adapter Female (5") - $5.99
$37.20 or $40.20 (if you go with a more-expensive OTG adapter) plus tax...
more expensive than the Chromecast itself but everyone has priorities.
Connections would be:
Pioneer cable RED A (flat) end --> Chromecast wall power adapter
Pioneer cable BLACK A (flat) end --> USB OTG adapter cable
Pioneer cable B (square) end --> USB A-B converter --> plug your USB Stick in here
USB OTG adapter cable --> Chromecast
You might find the right parts to get this cheaper, you just need to plan it out in your head. I was just sticking with stuff B&H has since they're in NYC.
Thanks,
I was planning a visit to B&H, but now it became mandatory.
I'll try the one from #3. I could wait until I get home, but can't leave NYC without rooting or bricking my Chromecast, in my hotel room.

Just so we're 100% clear, you'll need 3 total pieces to make it work - the Pioneer cable, the USB A female to B female adapter, and one of the OTG cables.
I also hope you've already checked your serial number against the rootable serial numbers and you know that the hotel's TV may not have HDMI enabled, and even if it does, its WiFi probably won't allow Chromecast to work.
If you brought your own wireless router, then you only have to deal with the TV though. Actually, if possible, I would take everything you need
with you to B&H. If you explain what you're trying to do, they might let you borrow an input on one of their TVs - then you won't have to worry about the hotel TV being locked, unless you already know it's not.
Good luck!
Just to add these cables are usefull for more than just hacking a Chromecast.
I use one to connect Hard Drives to my Xoom (Tablet) since my ROM supports OTG.
Sn are 3920 3921 3922, this shouldn't be a problem. Ref cables I'll take a look at the links later at the hotel. Thanks for your input.

USB charging cable available on Amazon

I typically check amazon a couple times a day to see if there are any new accessories available. Today I see there's a 36-pin usb data/charging cable available for $8.99 US. It's only 1 meter, so same size as the one that comes with the tablet, but at least there's finally something.

No, you still have to use the wall plug that came with the tablet since it uses a different voltage than normal microUSB chargers. You can use the wall plug that came with the tf700 however.

OTG USB adapter for the TF701

Found this on amazon for the Vivo tab, which uses the same 36-pin connector as the TF701. So I bought it for $20US hoping it would work with the 701 and it does! Plugged in the OTG adapter and attached my sandisk extreme usb 3 thumbdrive. Used the included SD/uSD card adapter to connect a couple SD cards and had no problems. Didn't do any speed tests or anything, just wanted to make sure they worked, and they did.

No problem. There is another way to find out. Do you have a USB mouse and/or keyboard handy? If you wouldn't mind testing these basic peripherals, we could really verify if this thing provides host mode for more than disk drives.

Also can you simultaneously power the device and provide input using a usb hub(plug in keyboard and mouse for example)?
I went to the computer store. Bought the following:
The adapter which is 2.0 by the way.
USB 3.0 HUB with Power Adaper.
A male to A male cable.
While connected to a the HUB, and while the device is on its says "NOT CHARGING". I turn it off(tablet), Not getting a charge while connected to a the hub. It also drained it while the tablet is off. Nevermind the hub for power.
NO CHARGE FROM HUB
While connected to the PC it drained the power down to 6% then went back up to 50%. Not sure about that because it seemed to charge while it was off.
NO CHARGE FROM PC
As for the power adapter that comes with the tablet to it. Not charging while ON. Turn it off and no charge.
NO CHARGE FROM ASUS POWER ADAPTER
SO no it doesnt charge in any practical sense from this VIVO adapter as far as i can tell. Maybe its the MALE to MALE cable. I dont know. But its not worth trying if there a chance of drain killing it.
Unfortunately from the adapter there is no media connection or usb debugging to pc or usb hub afiak.
NO MEDIA CONNECTION OR USB DEBUGGING
The good news is that the device can connect to the USB HUB and the keyboard , mouse and thumb drive work flawlessly together.

Aukey MicroUSB to Type C safety

Hi all,
I ordered these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01GRGJ6PU/ from Amazon, and since it is not stated on the product information page, I was wondering whether they are spec compliant or not (so I can know if it is safe for me to use them).
I tried them on a friend's Nexus 5X using Checkr and it said they were ok, but I still would like to make sure.
Any experiences with these?
Thanks!
Did your friend know you were testing out your potentially-dodgy cable on their phone?! ?

Yes Even though from my reading, worst that could happen was to the computer you connected it to, and that was my laptop
Edit: I needed to check on a friend's phone because Checkr only works on Nexus 5X and 6P and Pixel C. I had already used it before on my phone and it worked just fine. Ampere reported a maximum current of 1500 mAh. Once I tried on the Nexus I had already tested a few things on my phone
AUKEY along with anker and nekteck is one of the better aftermarket cable vendors, all of their USB-C to USB-A accessories I've tried have been compliant
