Dealing with Adaptive Storage - Android One (Second-Generation) General

Hi,
Anyone using Adaptive Storage here? I have some question about adaptive storage.
1. Is TWRP is working with Adaptive Storage in G1?
2. How to deal with our Adaptive Storage if G1 is not OTG supported? Like managing your files/apps.
3. Any problems that you encouter with Adaptive Storage.
Thank you.

I wish I could use but my sd card is old and rusty (2mb write 5mb read)

Thank you so much for the reply. I think no one use adaptive storage here

Well 12gb is enough for me. But if I'd have a faster sdcard why wouldn't I choose extra internal memory. I mean think about it, 12.5+32=~40gb (there is a "~" because you know sdcard brands calculate 1mb=1000bytes but phones and computers 1mb=1024bytes)

[Q] System Storage vs. USB Storage

Just recently got my Note, and it's the best phone I've ever had. Love all the storage as well. But I'm curious though, how come everything downloaded goes to system storage rather than USB storage? (I have all this space in USB storage, but nothing seems to go there)
Because you are a noob I won't Delete this thread I ll move to Q&A post anymore in the wrong area and they get deleted, only warning-- Moderator

System storage is just where Android prefers to install applications, in a partition that can't be accessed without root access (and therefore doesn't need to be "shut down" when you turn on USB storage mode).
Since most apps are only a few megabytes, and you have almost 2 gigabytes of System storage, it's no big deal. You'll have to work VERY hard to fill up System storage with applications.
USB storage is where a lot of the data lives (cached map files, music, downloads, etc). Plenty of space there, for sure, but it's also "off limits" to Android when USB is mounted on a computer.
But if you really want to use it instead of system storage (I don't recommend it), you can go to Applications/Manage Applications then pick the app you want, click on it, and there will be a button that says "Move to SD Card". Keep in mind that things will load slower off USB storage as well, it's formatted differently and takes longer to read and write.
Back in the bad old days when HTC called a lot of the shots in the Android world, system storage was TINY, 512 or 256 megabytes, and internal USB storage really didn't exist (needed an external SD card). So it was a big deal when Froyo was released with official "apps2SD" support, allowing people to move apps the the external SD card.
Samsung blew that trend all to hell with the original Galaxy S, with unheard of HUGE System and internal USB storage, along with support for an external SD card. Now everyone follows suite with at large System storage, to be competitive with Samsung, and because memory is much cheaper these days as well.

[Q] Question about how the storage on the M8 is mounted

Considering how many people have used one of these by now, I was wondering if anybody could answer this.
One thing that drove me crazy about some Motorola and Samsung phones with 16+GB of internal storage, is that the storage was partitioned off and the usable space was mounted as if it was an sd card. This really wrecked havoc on apps that are supposed to save data to the SD card, because they would think the internal storage was the SD card and save to there. Not only was this annoying for some backup-based apps, but games which need to download anywhere from 500MB to 3GB of resources would install to the (usually 10GB or less after the rest is partitioned to the system) internal storage, thinking they were installing to the sd card. Basically, the sd card was only usable for photos, videos, and music... and file managers. The phone might as well not have an SD slot.
So far every HTC phone I have had hasen't been this way, the EVO 3D I currently has mounts the internal storage as actual internal storage, so apps correctly download these large amounts of data to the SD card. I didn't get a One because the lack of a SD slot was a dealbreaker for me, but now I am extremely interested in the M8 (Just a shame it isn't water proof like the S5 or Z2, oh well).
I am curious about how it treats it's internal storage however, since it starts out at 16GB(although it appears the Sprint version will be 32GB). Does it actually mount it as internal storage, so apps who want to write to the SD card would be writing to the real SD card itself, or does it work like the Samsung and Motorola phones where it partitions off part of it's internal storage as if it was external, making apps think that it's internal storage is the SD card?
I really hope it doesn't mount it's internal memory as if it was the SD card.
I have the Evo LTE, and it has the same storage space as the new One (16gb internal with a microSD slot). It treats the memory as internal SD and external SD. Most apps are saved to the internal SD. Only a mere few (XDA is the only one that comes to mind) can be saved/moved to the ext SD.
I hope that this answers your question.

The latest update to the EVO LTE changed the way storage was handled. They got rid of the internal SD so all of the 16 Gb was treated as phone storage. I would imagine that the M8 will be the same, especially given how Kit Kat treats memory cards.

Wouldn't something like that require re-partitioning of the flash ROM? I remember when I asked if it was possible to do this on a Galaxy S4 with a custom ROM I was told it would require re-partitioning the internal memory and be extremely risky and possible to brick.
Granted though, I would love it if the M8 handled memory this way. Has anyone here tried one and can confirm or deny this?

Yes, the Android 4.3 update for the EVO 4G LTE was distributed as an RUU that repartitioned the internal memory.
The repartitioning to the LTE brings it in line with the first HTC One in terms of internal storage. It does mean that USB file transferring becomes MTP-only (no more mounting the partition directly). I find MTP rather slow (and at least under Linux, unreliable)... It's annoyed me to no end dealing with my wife's HTC One. At least the faster CPU than my Evo 4G LTE should make SFTP not glacially slow.

The external SD can still be mounted in Mass Storage mode on the EVO LTE, so hopefully that'll also be the case on the M8.

I also was using HTC EVO 3D. Now I am using HTC One M8. This phone treats Internal Storage as SDCARD and External Storage card as SDCARD2. I am also seeing this as problematic. I don't want to root at this point of time and just living with it with my M8. I rooted EVO3D and had complete Freedom even with CM 11 (KK 4.4.3). Lets wait and watch...

Does 'adaptable' storage on the Note 8?

Has anyone tried the 'adaptable' storage hack on the Note 8 yet?
Worked on my S7.
I have the same question
I was thinking about doing this but from what I hear it's more trouble than it's worth but if anyone whose done it would like to chime in I'm sure we'd all greatly appreciate it.

I feel the same way. More trouble than its worth. The 64GB is plenty for all your apps and for everything else you have your fat Micro SD card.
I can't find half a reason to bother with it. 1. Many apps, especially larger one will use SD card for storage, if not you can set it to do so in settings. 2. SD card is slower than internal memory, so frequently used programs shouldn't be there 3. It creates whole lot of problems if SD card goes bad and yes, had this happen to me multiple times on Sandisk included. 4. it can get complicated when you swap the cards between phones, computers etc and you use the phone without dedicated SD card inside 5. If you really think 64GB internal storage doesn't do it, hunt for elusive 128 and 256 GB versions. They should show up somewhere.
The only a reason to do it I can think off: "because I can?"
I wouldn't do it unless the UFS ever comes out. Supposed to be a lot faster external storage.
Sent from my LGV20 using yo Mama's unlocked bootloader.
If anybody does want to enable adoptable storage on the Note8 despite the potential issues, try ashyx's patch here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/patch-adoptable-storage-enabler-t3460478
Note:
- You will need TWRP installed.
- It might not work for you. I've only tested it with Renovate.
- You will need to use adb to set up your sd card.
You won't do it on an unrooted phone. Samsung never implemented it.
The phone's built in memory is far faster than any SD card at this point. You'd be slowing your phone down... and not by just a little bit.
I beg to differ
Agree the phones internal memory is tops right now.
Disagree the phone will be slow if you offload storage.
Source: i have virtually every app i use daily (Save a couple) moved to SD card and ive noticed NO.. I repeat NO.. noticeable difference in speed or issue by moving these apps. And im talking about WhatsApp, textra, several video playing apps, Instagram, Snapchat, outlook mobile, and some other apps.
There is SOME residual data from these apps that LIVE on the internal storage—perhaps this left over data keeps the app from bottlenecking from the SD card. This is speculation though.
If interested, in mexico, the largest carrier, telcel offers the 128 Gb model

adoptable Storage under PIE.

Have anyone tried formatting the SD card as internal using the SM Partition command over adb?
We (me and my group on WhatsApp) have and it always corrupt the card, I am here now, because I would like to learn how to look for clues to troubleshoot this.
Because it makes no sense at all, pie is compatible with using adoptable storage and FBE, in custom rooms we are able to use this feature, feels odd that in the official rom we can't.

I am also interested in this. Has anyone had success in setting up adaptable storage on Pie?
Tried with a 8gb sandisk... corrupted sd card after the process
i've tried with this tutorial: https://stackoverflow.com/questions...sd-card-into-internal-storage-via-adb-command
The problem is that modern consumer grade SD cards are not reliable for using as SSD. The number of write cycles is limited, the garbage management may corrupt card on certain conditions, etc. It is good enough that we can use SD card for camera and videos.

That's not really a problem.
You see, the SD card lasting around the same time as your device is all there's needed, because it's almost certain that when you replace your device you're probably gonna get a newer, better and larger card along with it.
Or on the off chance you're not, you can "afford" to lose a SD card faster because they are usually cheaper than a SSD, not to mention that apps usually have way less writing to the card can computer programs so it may even outlast SSDs.
I take my SanDisk exterme pro for example.
I have it it's been 3 years now and it's still performing exceptionally.
I've formated it countless times, as internal, as external, multi parted it for Link2SD, made and used SWAP partitions for expansion in performance on low ram phones, hell I used this card a lot and the old faithful is still kicking.
Formatting doesn't do anything to the card, writing gigabytes of data does and disconnecting power at the wrong moment does.
Not everyone buys extreme pro cards - most of the guys who can not afford bigger SSD will also buy cheaper SD cards - because, you know, they are cheaper. And no manufacturer is willing to explain why you lost your important pictures of your baby's 7 day anniversary.
If you want cheap solutions then go for cheaper products - I believe Moto G5 has the feature you are interested in. Maybe this is because with slower CPU's the user has less actual options for wrecking the SD card.
After the Pie update, In the Moto Help app under LEARN, I found this:
"Change storage type" "Go to Settings>Storage>Touch SD Card name>3 dots>Storage Settings>Format as Internal or Format as Portable". (I tried to upload a pic, but it won't load)
I haven't tried this as I am waiting on a new UHS-1 SD card hopefully delivered today! Also under the Moto Help app: "Using SD card as extended Internal Storage" you need to have a high speed SD card such as a UHS-1, "you can move DL apps, app files, media files to the card. This card is NOT readable in other devices and cannot be decrypted on other devices". Hope this helps...

Yeah it is supposed to be this way, but when you format the card it gives no such option.
I think the rom is bugged because the restrictions imposed was on fbe, now that pie fixed this, there's no such restrictions.
On custom ROMs this works as intended.

As I have tested the Havoc was, and several folks on my WhatsApp group reported Lineage to be working too.
typically when I have a card go read only (bad) I clone it to a new card and it continues to work in the device. The whole encryption system in android is kind of a bummer because you can't read it on another devices. There is a lot of compromises for security that are made to satisfy the least common denominator. Like they could offer you a way to back up the key to another location, etc.
Not being able to use my 128gb card as internal on my X4 has me a little regretful for leaving Apple. If I had known they took that option away I would have sprung for another model. Hopefully they'll change that. I'm on stock Android Pie, so if any custom ROMs are out there I'm all ears?

I recently purchased my new moto x⁴ after my beloved moto G6 (needs to be repaired [trying to get an estimate from Motorola] as both front and back are shattered).
I'm baffled about the storage limitations for SDcard integration as well. I'm struggling with this low storage space warnings with 32GB but far less for actual storage because of the incredibly huge system files. My 128GB available space on my SDcard is just 128GB when it makes no use via x⁴ .
Updated to PIE but making use of more storage capacity doesn't seem to be a priority. Can't wait until my moto G6 returns but I'll continue to research and see what options are available on x⁴.
Any and ALL advices are most welcomed with a huge thank you in advance.

Same issue here. I bought the phone and even bought 128gb extra sd card to increase the space. But after I opened and inserted my card I realized it's not showing up extra space. I searched through many forums and found out that's it not possible to do so. I have tried ADB tool and formatted it as internal memory as per steps mentioned. But once I do that it says my SD card is corrupted.
Not sure what is the reason for giving SD card when you cant use it as internal storage. You don't have a gallery app and you already have all your photos going to your google photos, whats the use here.
As you said, will wait if anyone finds a solution. Please do post here in case you find a solution, I will do as well.
Thanks

You can set the moto camera to write to scard is probably the biggest reason, outside of music storage. It does suck adaptable storage isnt working/supported.

Hm, I'm more paranoid than you, I transfer my pictures to my computer to free space.

How to move apps to SD?

I already set camera app to save photos and videos to external SD but, since I have many apps installed in my XZ1c, I'm running low on internal storage (I'm constantly struggling with about 30Gb used, 2Gb free).
Unfortunately, afaik, there is no way to move apps to external SD without rooting the phone and, although I've a good general background with computers, I'm a newbie in rooting / modding smartphones.
So I'd like to root the phone just to be able to move apps to SD with the minimum possible effort and risk.
What the way to go?
Do you have TWRP Recovery installed?
No at the moment I made nothing.
I was reading about TWRP (I didn't know about it, I told I am a newbie!) right now.
My problem is I'm afraid of any modification...
Best to keep the OS and apps on internal memory as it's faster than the SD card.
Use the SD card as a data drive.
30 gb is barely enough; minimum for me is 128 gb but more is always better. A micro SD card is a mandatory hardware requirement for me.
2 gb headroom is cutting it real close... looks like you're getting near upgrade time.
I would move to SD only unimportant apps, that I don't need being fast and reliable, keeping all relevant apps in internal memory.
The problem is there is not a phone around like the legendary XZ1c, so powerful and compact. Only comparable phone that I could find is Galaxy S10e (but considering the price it's not worth the upgrade)
However using an external SD for media, 32Gb of internal memory would be enough to me, IF ONLY I could save a handful of Gb by moving the unimportant apps to SD.

I hear you. The easiest solution is to just deep six those rarely used apps.
You can preserve them on the SD card for easy reload with ApkExport.
You can also set the main apps that are being actively used to use the SD card for their data storage.
Can someone please confirm Link2SD can move apps to SD card on a rooted XZ1 Compact?
