Sony credentials restore after unlocking the bootloader - Xperia Z5 Android Development

This is outdated and not maintained anymore. Please this new tool instead
Most of us have decided to unlock the bootloader as there is no root or xposed without it.
But as you may have noticed this wipes the masterkey in TA unit 66667 and will make all Sony credentials inaccesible. As a consequence a lot of functionality is lost, e.g x-reality, Sony application updates etc.
Here is a solution to simulate the credentials again. There is no way to recover your lost key, but we can simulate them. Just flash the attached zip via TWRP, that's all.
This is solution is for all Z5 models (Z5 compact, Z5 , Z5 Premium, and the dual models of course)
Have fun

I can say that I have tested this on Xperia Z5 Premium, and when I view the sample photos that came with the phone I can now clearly see the image quality scale up just like before I unlocked bootloader!
Thanks ALOT Tobias, you're the man!
EDIT: Below I have included my experiences from the original thread where this was posted, and I will continue to update it if I feel necessary!
Testing right now on Z5P, will report back!
EDIT: First test: I went into album and viewed the sample photos that came with the phone. I can now se a clear change in the image quality, just like before unlocking bootloader! Going to do some camera tests now!
EDIT2: My camera app will not start, stating it is already in use or the flashlight is. Will try to install camera 2.0 then see what happens.
Camera keeps crashing, and will not start :S
EDIT3: Now suddenly there were several updates available on the "Whats new" app! Will post a screenshot soon!
EDIT4: I installed a 3rd party camera app (CyanogenOS Camera) and the pictures are noticeably better than before this fix! I think I can say its back to the quality it was before unlocking bootloader!
In the meantime I discovered that my 32gb sd card is now almost full, with only 2gb left. Are there any large files that twrp creates other than the backup files everytime I flash a rom or something?
Is there anything I can safely delete here?
EDIT5: After some more camera testing and comparing pictures with my lumia 1020 and my galaxy s6 I can say that in my eyes the picture quality is back to its original state.

So just flash this in recovery on an unlocked bootloader and we are done? Or am I missing something?
I haven't unlocked my bootloader as of yet but I'm tempted to now.

I've read reports of Sony's Camera app not working after using this. Can you confirm if the TA partition only had DRM keys and not also some camera algorithms? If they did, can we use get those as well?

I assume you are refering to my experiences with this fix.
Although the sony camera app for some reason stopped working after this, I can still use all my other apps that include the use of the camera without problems, like snapchat or the Cyanogen Camera which when I take pictures with and compare them to the pictures taken before the DRM restore, I can clearly see that the picture quality is now back!

Actually, CyanogenOS Camera has it's own postprocesssing, so you aren't using Sony's. It's just an alternative. I still want to know if it's possible to get the Sony algorithms back and/or use Sony's Camera app.

Tobias, awesome work.
I wonder, how likely do you think it is that Sony will be able to patch this exploit in the Marshmallow update?

I've just flashed the patch and my sony camera 2.0 is working. I guess you installed xposed which conflicted with camera 1.0, you'll need to deodex it or upgrade to camera 2.0 via What's New.
EDIT: I just tested Sony camera 2.0 to shoot with real high 3200iso indoor and no color noise there, confirmed this patch restored Sony low-light denoise algorithms.

I just tested CyanogenOS Camera. I think it actually make use of Sony engine, not to mention it works with 23MP/20MP mode and it also access all scenes mode in Sony camera just acting like a stock camera. Tried to shoot at indoor low-light, no color noise been found, I think the DRM patch is working good with CyanogenOS camera.

Great work OP!
you've made a breakout of the Z5 series!

I did over 2 weeks research in order to understand the whole mechanism and I have to admit that thre Sony security team did a pretty good job.
Anyway as I have a Z5 dual myself you can count on that I will make it work with Marshmallow.

Any reason you're not making this version available for 32bit devices?

Brilliant! Gonna unlock my BL soon after work.
 @tobias.waldvogel
Btw mate, mind to share ur modded kernel (maybe with recovery image as well) for Z5 Dual? mine is E6683.

ehhh, i can't test because i'm not rooted (yet), but if this really works you are officially THE man! and i think you can start a campaign to claim the bounty that is out there. i know i would pay up my part!
that is, if it works (and keeps working on marshmallow)

[Q] Unlocking any downsides?

Hi there, i've got an Z1 ordered wich should be delivered tomorrow or the day after.
I've read a few threads in advance and even checked out some roms wich will suit me
I've got a question though;
It's not that beginner stuff, i have a sxs and i know what to do to unlock the bootloader and flash cfws.
I've read some posts about having camera issues in CM11 and that is has something to do with unlocking the bootloader (link)
i'm honest:i haven't read the whole thread so sorry if that issue should be resolved now.
now the point of this thread:
is there anything that can f**k up my device when unlocking it while completely following sony's guide?
or should is there another foolproof method?
next thing:
i've read alot about that touchscreen bug. if i have this bug, do have it right from the start or can it also happen later?
i don't want to unlock my device and then after some time falling victim to this bug.
last question:
if anything happens, worst case scenario:
i've unlocked my device and something happens to it. can i relock my bootloader without sony knowing that it was unlocked?
thanks in advance

No, if you follow the instruction all will be fine, before that check if you can open it, type *#*#7378423*#*# and see Bootloader Unlock Allowed: YES or NO?

If you have the problem then you have it already, you just don't know how to reproduce it. Unlocking Bootloader have nothing to do with it.

Before Unlock Bootlader you have to root your phone and Backup TA and DRM keys, then you can Unlock or reLock your Bootlader.
Should be covered via warranty if the Booloader is locked, so if you Relock your Bootlader should be too.
I haven't read about any bricks just from unlocking.
Most bricks happen when going from 4.2.2 to 4.3

do you really have to backup TA and DRM keys? i didnt do that when unlocking the bootloader (it took me 2h to unlock it and install a custom ROM, didnt have time to flash 3 ROMs just to get root and be able to backup TA/DRM)
afaik DRM keys are only needed for bravia engine which many people think is useless and even worsens image quality due to heavy sharpening..

warranty i didnt have from the start, so no loss there
X-Reality, Bionz and Bravia engine all sound like marketing gimmicks - especially x-reality/bravia engine which does nothing for image quality, use of TFT displays is Sonys biggest problem and no software enhancement can solve that (HTC still makes the best displays on the market)
and Bionz didnt help Sony make best smartphone camera on the market
the way i look at it, its just like having AOSP/Google device..

I don't know, in Galeria Promenada, Ul Ostrobramska, shop Teletorium they selling fake Phones?
In daylight all pictures seems good, I don't like the quality of 20mpx and 8mpx in iAuto. Too much noise, many complain about that, just a bit of low light and Bam, expensive camera gone on the moon. I don't like the pictures, my personal opignion. The phone is good to me and if it's fake they really do a hell of job in China, still Made in China the Genuine anyway so no big difference!

woah, my thread got hijacked...
i'd like to give feedback now:
i don't know of camera quality yet, since i still got those factory screen protectors on my z1 (those ugly ones wich you have to peel off). i'd like to keep it that way until i get my third party screen protector. i'm a bit clumsy and i don't like the thought of having scratches on sonys stock protectors. i will get my screen protector + case tomorrow
i'm halfway through unlocking the phone. it came with 257 (4.2) t-mobile branded, so i had to downgrade to 534 to get root. ive had to read alot before downgrading, i wasn't really sure if drm keys stay if i just downgrade via flashtool. took me a while too get those firmwares too .
the biggest problems i had were with my adb drivers. I had a SXS before, where all was pretty smooth. But i had dozens of problems to get those adb drivers for my z1 to work. Normally i don't have any problems with such things as drivers but those really got my nuts :/
Windows installed drivers of their own, wouldn't let me overwrite nor delete them. Either the drivers were to old or wouldn't fit device (wich was a lie). Good thing i have a ssd, because i've punched my desk more than a few times
now i'm on 290, with root and recovery. i have a backup of TA partition, and next thing i'll do is unlocking the bootloader.
second:
at the moment i lack of a rubber mat, so i can't really test my screen. up until now i haven't noticed any problem with the responsiveness of the screen. i'll report back if im through with that.
Nice, sorry i think the thread hijacking was my fault
Anyway z1 camera is as good as xperia s camera, sucks is lower light levels but besides that its amazing,

[Q] Xperia Z1 + iHackers 4.3 + iHackers Kernel - 20MP Camera Hack...

Hi, after 12 hours of bricking and unbricking my phone and forgetting to save TA partition I have successfully got my phone working again with the custom ROM installed and semi working.
The main reason I wanted it was to get my camera working on 20MP with superior auto. However when I have taken photos on superior auto I am getting 8MP photos instead of 20MP. When installing the ROM I did choose th 20MP mod and have seen the mod is there via the security app but still struggle to get the camera to take 20MP on auto.
I would have liked to post this message in the correct post in the iHackers thread but the forum would rather I spam 10 posts before they allow me to post in there... Strange if you ask me as I do not have time to spam 10 posts, I would however stick around after this problem is resolved as I have just got into Android phones after finally leaving apple... :S
Does anyone else have the Z1 with this ROM and having the same issue?
PS. I forgot to save the TA partition like a NOOB! BUT every app is working fine except Wisepilot for Xperia, which installs but has asked me to pay for the features I am supposed to already have. I suspect this is due to the missing DRM files.
I know there is no way to get DRM back but what if I sent the phone to Sony and asked to pay to get them back, is that a possibility?
To recap:
1: How to get 20MP on superior auto...
2. Wisepilot for Xperia, does it work for free on this ROM?
3. Will Sony fix DRM for cash? If not, is there a way around this? Insurance?
Thanks.

20MP Camera mod is a module in Xposed. You should install (pre-install in iHacker) and activate Xposed Framework. Then, activate camera module. It works for me. I guess it works for you too as I am having Z1 with iHacker ROM and iHacker Kernel as well.
Hope this helps
P.S. I did also do exactly the same thing as you, losing TA like a dumbass.

[Q] Requested Camera APK

Hi, everybody.
Could somebody please be so nice to take the Time to upload the camera APK from the Xperia Z?
White you do this, please mention the Android Version.
I prefer the APK from Android 4.1.
If possible, please make the APK installable without Flashing.
Thank you very much.

You won't be able to install it as normal Apk because it's a system one. You can only install it on the same firmware it came from for security reasons.
Also, the Camera from 4.1 will *only* work on Android 4.1 firmware for Xperia Z. Anything newer or different and it needs to be ported, because again - it's a system app.
In short, what you are asking for is not as simple as you think.

My device is a Note 3.
But it's just interesting to see that camera app on the Note 3.
I also wanted to try, if the limitless burst shot and HDR Video works.
The Oppo Find 7 Camera, with it's 50 MP HD-Images (which beat up the M9's Camera, but don't reach the Lumia 1020 or a Lumix FZ1000), works on the Note 3.
With that HD-Images, the detail amount lies between G4/S6/Note4 and Lumia 1020. (It's like 930 or so...).
But the colour quality of S6 and G4 is slightly better. The S6/G4 also have a little bit less noise than this HD-Images.

Camera 2.0 ported

Here it is camera 2.0 ported for 5.0.2... This took a lot of work, months of work to figure this out. Theoretically this should work on any 20.7 megapixel Xperia device running 5.0.2... Enjoy it... My Rom Is coming people... I've been very busy with school.

I'm using my phone... And are you sure this has been available for 5.0.2? I know it's been available for 5.1.1 Lollipop for some time now...Because I'm pretty sure as of a month ago (that's around the last time I searched this topic) it wasn't working on 5.0.2 because people were getting Force Close errors on all the Camera 2.0 ports.. A couple of the devs even said 5.0.2 was impossible with this... but if you know of a recent 5.0.2 port that I don't know about, let me know.. It's not that I doubt you, I'd just like to see it for myself since I sunk a lot of time into getting this to work for our Lollipop version...Thanks!

This is the only way to get camera 2.0 on the z3v. Or use the other ports and watch your camera not work anymore and force close.

Also, can you please tell us what is different than the other downloadable installation file that's floating around here? They have the same timestamp and are the same size. I'm not doubting, just trying to understand.
Mr. Bradley, please, for the love of God, don't lock this thread down too.

There are no list of improvements specific to our device model, this is just the updated Sony camera app(s) ported from the Z5 to work on our devices. I wasn't aware there was another flashable camera port for the Z3v floating around here... Please link me to it. I assure you, you have nothing to risk by flashing this and that I am the original developer of this port... No one else by my knowledge should be circulating this file around for the Z3V or 5.0.2 in general. I'm making a flashable zip as we speak to revert back to the orginal camera should you not like the Camera 2.0's interface... I'm also working on an updated version of this port that will provide some camera improvements. When I'm done with both zips they will be posted in the OP along with some cleanup and screenshots. Thank you for your questions, it's great to ask questions... that's how we learn.. And its always good to know as much as possible before flashing anything to our phones. Should you have any more questions feel free to ask and I hope you enjoy the MOD.
Nope, not the same. When Mega DLs I end up with two of everything. Previous download zips were moved to my card and is the z5 2.0 at 10.5mb.
Will try this later and look for differences.

Would you mind linking me to this other zip you're referring to? Thank you
EDIT: Nevermind I can tell by the size of the file you must be referring to one of the other Camera 2.0 ports here on XDA. You can try flashing those at your own risk if you'd like, but I'd kindly like to warn you ahead of time, those do not work on Lollipop 5.0.2... The reason my port is larger in file size is because the framework ported from 5.1.1 as well as permission files to run Camera 2.0 are included. It is worth noting however, you can flash any other Camera 2.0 port AFTER flashing mine and they'll work since mine installs the correct framework and permissions that are necessary.
Zach,
Thanks for putting this together. I've installed it on rooted 5.02 and it's running well. Note that a couple boots were required after TWRP install and the user will get an overheat if trying to use the camera immediately but after the phone acclimates it is just fine.
I had downloaded the z5 zip not understanding that the z3V was the only one not on the list. I actually almost installed it until I read that it could brick the phone.
The UI seems a bit fiddly but I guess each has it's learning curve. I took random dim indoor shots, including some macros, before and after in the sensors native 4:3 aspect ratio at 20.7MP usingthe original and your ported 2.0, but using Camera FV-5. I didn't tripod the phone or run any real range, just point & shoot of 28 shots all the same objects from the same spot.
So far I have not noticed a significant difference and when the photos are zoomed in on they show the same muddled look from what appears to be the same overcorrective software (I'm sure Sony didn't change that). I've read that the z5 camera hardware is identical to the z3V.
I'll put her on a tripod this weekend and do some real testing.
The original camera zip will make flipping back and forth easier for comparison testing.
Thanks for making this happen!
Thank you so very much for your time and effort to get this working for our device
So how many of us have actually installed this ROM? Is it worth ditching the setup we have right now? I mean I don't really know how this could provide better performance if Sony hasn't updated any soft for our phones camera. I could understand manual modes might provide greater ability to change fine settings, but point and shoot quality and overall use ability is was I am concerned about.
First off, it's not a ROM, it's technically just a mod. Secondly, Sony supposedly did update the software, and because the camera hardware in our z3V phones are identical to those of the z5 which was released with this updated software, it will do the same thing and be perfectly installable without having to port it. -And it is, on nearly every single z model but ours because the z3V is a Verizon Sony step child.
The UI is MOSTLY what's new and improved, but lower light shots do seem to be rendered better by the software. The ISO limits haven't changed and I doubt that Sony did something to alter their interpolation software, but something does seem different.
Until I can easily switch back and forth without having to flash to an entire restore that's 12Gb (in other words, simply flash back to the original camera as a zip), I'm not going to bother with tripod testing. Once I can do that, I will take shots with a tripod in varying light using the old and new camera zips and examine the shots and exif data. It could simply be that in manual mode the software defaults to better settings. I'm guessing that it's the default values values in lower light situations that have been changed, if anything.
At first I didn't like the user interface just because I wasn't used to it. But now I find I'm actually using it more than I used the old one (I normally use FV-5). It is a one handed, portrait friendly UI.
I highly recommend this mod. Simply make a backup and install it. You can always revert back to the old one via your backup or you could wait for zachariahpope to release the original as an installable zip.
I found I minor bug. The front camera wants to stay on manual. If you switch to superior auto, the camera closes.

Strange. Mine doesn't crash when switching to superior auto with the front camera.
Edit: It does if I try to switch while using the front camera. If I switch to Superior Auto for the rear camera and then switch to front camera it is fine.

Bootloader unlock & rooting

So clearly this is still very early days given the phone is barely released yet but this is my first Sony Xperia device and just wanna check if the following will be possible when I receive it...
1) use this website to unlock the bootloader https://developer.sony.com/develop/open-devices/get-started/unlock-bootloader/
2) extract the boot img
3) patch the boot img with magisk and flash
Thanks in advance
Ah just found this site too
https://www.ytechb.com/how-to-root-sony-xperia-1-ii-and-unlock-bootloader/
Will be great to root and get xposed + gravitybox!
Be carefull, unlocking bootloader gave in the past lesser features for the camera.

Thanks for the heads up, that's interesting and a little concerning! Hmm I guess we'll see how it goes...
Hmm seems perhaps losing such functionality could be avoided...
The link is not posting for some reason but Google "How to Backup and Restore Sony Xperia Z+ DRM Keys and Keep DRM Functionality after Root", perhaps this method could work
I've emailed Sony via the developers website whether unlocking the bootloader will result in losing camera features. Will post back here if/when they reply.
It'd be great to know, as if I get my device next Thurs I would love to get it rooted for substratum theming, ad blocking, edxposed etc
Here is Sony's response. Seems its gonna take a brave person to try this out! I think I'll likely just enjoy the device stock for a short while to get a feel for it and then see if unlocking is gonna be an option, as I wouldn't want to lose features but also I don't want a rootless android....
Perhaps the backup TA partition option (and the DRM keys) is the answer, but I don't know enough....
Not worth it in my opinion but to each his/her own.

Agreed, certainly at this point...
One of the best things about the phone will be these features, but I must admit if I can't root it I'll be a little disappointed.
Let's see how things go ?

If its the same as the Xperia 1 then you'll have nothing to worry about when it comes to the camera

This is great! Has there been any detrimental effect at all? I mean obviously unlocking can pose some risks but indeed so long as nothing breaks or I won't lose any of the great capabilities I'm buying this phone for, then I'll likely just root soon after receiving it ?
Here is a thought, why not first try the phone in stock ?
I mean i was all for unlocking in the past, hell i even created custom roms.
But that was the time that we could actually add new features to the phone.

Oh definitely, that'll be what I'll do initially. I'll spend a day or 2 (patience permitting) just completely out of the box fresh and untouched, the way its intended to get that feel for the device. It'll be my first Sony so I wanna see how it runs. Curious also if the advertised motion blur reduction runs well, in comparison to the 90hz I'm used to. I wanna see how the battery life holds up to my usage and I definitely wanna get used to the pro mode camera etc.
Then, I'll enjoy rooting (which by then perhaps others are posting their experiences too) for all the benefits that brings. Plus then there's custom rom support in the works too.
Oh I just love that new device feeling!

Only detrimental effect to the camera for the Xperia 1 was letting Sony write the software for it.
You'd lose the DRM keys so you'll lose the video enhancement, sound enhancement, widevine keys for watching stuff in HD and above in certain apps like Netflix.
Unlocking isn't really worth it in my opinion when software is pretty much stock Android with the DRM stuff.

If I remember right it was the DSEE for upscaling audio to HD that was lost.
If you get the phone to focus on media then keep i'd keep it locked to be on the safe side. Let others unlock it first then see what they say.

I think I will just to be safe...
There'll be some won't care about the Sony features as such and may proceed to unlock right away.
I'll enjoy the phone as-is for a few days and enjoy it as its meant to be enjoyed and in the meantime will see how others get on.
Cheers :good:

If you learn anything useful be sure to share!
Apologies if this is a total newbie question, but do I have to unlock the bootloader to flash official firmware too? I'm getting the phone from O2 in the UK and wanted to flash EE or generic EU firmware to unlock WiFi calling.
