Always stuck at Formatting cache - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

Hello everyone.
Lately I had this frustrating problem with formatting the cache through any recovery I ever had. ALWAYS!
How flashing a ROM goes:
- I'm powering off the phone and enter in recovery.
- I select Wipe Data/Cache (Or Wipe for a new ROM option in CWM)
- It starts by formatting data and next is cache, where I get stuck.
I don't have many options. I can either pull out the battery or wait a while. Oh, no worries, after 5 minutes of "formatting cache" it reboots, with the current ROM messed, obviously.
It's annoying because no one seems to have this problem and it happens every single time when I wipe.
Hope there is someone who will bother helping me out with this.
P.S. - I'm no expert, more like a noob, so don't ask me too-technical questions.
Thankiees!

switch to latest TWRP

flash stock om once with odin
wipe data and cache with stock recovery once
then install latest TWRP
that fixed it for me when i had that issue

Hi there,
Are you still able to go CWM? if you are still able to, make a Nandroid backup, wipe dalvik cache and cache partition and reboot recovery and system and check if your phone's able to bypass the Samsung log after. Give it a time as well to wait.. perhaps 10 mins or so.
By the way I'm just curious, what did you do to make your phone stuck to it's samsung logo in the first place?

Thanks for the quick reply yes im still able to go to cwm 1. wiped dalvik 2. wiped cache partition 3. rebooted recovery and system

Try installing the main rom you had without doing "wipe data/factory reset", but with dalvik cache and cache wipe.
ok, I am not pro enought to figure out what's happening in zip.
Id recommend factory reset on safe kernel, or reflashing rom, then reflash safe kernel.
Considering I have no clue on zip, a clean install might be called for. On safe kernel and safe kernel recovery a format system/data might be needed to fully clean this stuff out. But I am not sure about that.
Why do you need call recording anyway?
edit: all at own risk ofc

[Q] How to Go Back to Stock JB???

Hi Experts,
I recently rooted my phone and installed SuperNexus ROM on it after CWM mode.
I want the Stock JB back on my phone and also unroot the phone. How do I do it ?? Any pointers or help ???
I found this link while browsing..please tell me is it safe to follow this procedure for JB stock rom too.

Yes, it's safe but I advice you to wipe everything before you go stock.
Flash one of philz's kernels for JB(latest I guess), reboot recovery and then wipe everything. My advice is to wipe cache, system, data, preload, dalvik and even emmc. You will ofcourse lose everything on internal card. After that do a full wipe/factory reset(the one which says install new rom).
Then reboot to download mode, press up and flash stock JB firmware via PC Odin just like in the link.
I followed the procedure in the link and its tuck after samsung logo..just keeps reloading again ad again samsung logo..
what do i do now??

Ok. Are you in recovery of the stock JB that you were trying to flash?
Or just tell me, what kind of stock ROM did you flash via Odin.
This is stock JB's recovery..I flashed the official ROM for India DDLSC.

Ok, great. Now you will wipe everything.
Go to mount and storage and:
-format cache
-format system
-format data
-format preload
-format emmc(it will delete your entire internal storage, I do it to really delete everytihng, you don't have to do it if you have important data but I advice it)
Then go back and go advanced:
-wipe dalvik
Then go to wipe/factory reset and select the second one(Install new ROM - this will again format everything).
Get back when you're done.
Yes done that ..what to do next

Now go to download mode. You can reboot to download somewhere in the menu. Maybe under advanced, or under Philz settings, just find reboot to download.
When it boots, press up and hook up the phone to your computer.
Run PC Odin and you should see a yellow coloured window that says that device is detected.
Now under PDA select your stock ROM md file. Check "Auto reboot" and "F. Reset time" and nothing else.
After all is setup, click Start and wait to complete.
I am doing that.. just a question was that the boot loop issue of stock ROM?
done with odin device is reloading.
Yes it started after taking a bit long time..
I am configuring it now..
I have few questions about it..
Is my device still rooted? If yes how to unroot it.
Is philz recovery still present?
everytime I flash a ROM I will have to wipe everything?

You are not rooted anymore and you have a stock recovery, everything is stock. You don't have to wipe everything when you flash a new
ROM, but it is very adviced, also it depends on the ROM you are flashing.
The bootloop probaly occured becouse you were coming from an AOSP based ROM and probably didn't wipe anything.

Yes, next time you should backup your important data and always wipe everything. That's the most reliable way.

Could be a bug or a one-time thing, it stopped when doing wipe data/factory reset, rebooted and it seems it did it anyways, but wanted to flash a rom xD. TWRP one is working perfectly tough, even with format system
Went to format cache and it seem cwm has just frozen, any ideas on how to reboot?
Volume down + power got it to reboot, but now stuck in bootloop
CWM corrupted the cache I think but fixed it via fastboop

Still problems with wiping cache. On the recoveries boot it says "Warning: No file_contexts". Stuck on formatting /cache.
It finishes formatting the cache but doesn't give an update to tell us it's complete.

Problem
I just flashed the recovery after using TWRP for a long time and when I tried to wipe the cache the phone froze. I had to manually reset it. I had waited more than 5 minutes and it wouldn't unfreeze. I want to flash Omar roms and i understand i need this recovery, but cant flsh it, any help?

U can use both recovery's to install omars rom. The problem about the long cache wiping is different for each person. Some don't have any problem at all and some do have problems with it. Sometimes it takes a couple of minutes sometimes it wipes in 3 seconds. I dunno why it happens, but when android 4.4 is out with the new kernel i will definitely have another look into it.

P880 won't boot after 442 flashing

Hi guys,
Need your assistance in this. I downloaded the 4.4.2, the Gapps (stock version), and the CWM Touch 6044. Flashed successfully the 6044. Rebooted, and flashed omni 442 and then the gapps. Did a wipe data/factory reset. Then pressed reboot device. The phone will restart and stay stuck at the Omni Logo. No progress from there at all. Did a few other reboots and different combinations to the above but to no result. Stuck there. Finally, did a restore from my backup just to have a phone again..Any idea what I did wrong from the start?
How long did you wait at the first bootup? It took quite long for me, so I'd suggest waiting up to 20 minutes before turning off the phone. Try flashing with the most lightweight Gapps package, that's what everyone seems to be using. You could also try wiping cache and dalvik cache.

Well, did the Dalvik cache but later on, when I was experimenting. I had waited at least 16/18 minutes till my patience ran out...
Decided to have one more go right now. 1. Did a wipe data / factory reset. 2. After that, wiped Dalvik cache. 3. Presently installing Omni and then will install gapps. 4. Will reboot and leave it to boot until I leave work. (couple of hours from now). And will see what happens.
- Forgot to add thaty in all instances, I selected YES in the "root" question in the end. -
Thanks for replying!
---Update
Nothing changed. Stuck at the Omni logo for about 50 minutes..

So don't flash gapps and ROM back to back. Flash ROM then reboot and after waiting 5 mins reboot and flash gapps again.

Maybe format /system in addition to the factory reset (it's under mounts and storage). So you get a completely clean install

Thanks for your advice guys - Unfortunately I don't see any results
I booted in recovery and in this order: Wiped data / did factory reset - then wiped Dalvik - then did format /system - then flashed successfully Omnirom and at the end select YES in the "root" question. Did not touch the Gapps.
Same result - has been in the Omni Logo for more than half an hour.
Can someone tell me the absolute prerequisites needed to install and boot normally? Apart from CWM Touch 6.0.4.4 that is?
Thanks in advance
I really don't see any more required steps to install OmniRom. Did you try another downloaded OmniRom? Maybe something is wrong with your used version.

all I did under mount & storage is the "format /system". Did not mount anything any other time. Is this part of the procedure too or are we shooting blind here? - Cause directions in the post say flash rom, flash apps, wipe data & reboot, let alone the 15 other combos I've done.
Haven't tried anything yet cause I need to re-download the ROM and presently I can't get any of my 3 PCs "see" the LG's contents like a flash drive. Can only do it in my work's laptop. Beats me why..
If you don't have important data, format internal storage too. No idea for 4.4, but if you flash kdz, this is a must.

It is important to mount everything as far as I know. In my old device's forum it always a step that is specified, I never see it in these forums though.

N7000 stuck at boot screen

This phone was not rooted prior to being stuck at the boot screen. Actually, it wasn't event stuck at the boot screen. Instead, it turned on and off. I installed PhilZ recovery and was able to backup all files. Then I tried to flash different versions of CM without success. They all get stuck at the boot screen now. No more turning on and off. I also tried to clear cache, wipe dalvik something and reset to factory. Is there something else that can be done? What would be the most likely cause for the failure?

Alternatively, Odin a stock rom and look for a philz.zip with compatible baseband. You can enter stock recovery and then flash the philz.zip via update option. This is essentially replacing stock recovery with the custom version. I did this on a naturally occurring bootloop phone and it seems to work, this method also bypasses the yellow triangle warning on boot.
From there, if you want to use other custom roms just remember to wipe /data and /system before installing the kernel, followed by rom itself after a reboot to recovery.

I tried that. I went to samsung-updates.com and downloaded a version that I believe is compatible with my baseband version. Is there any way to check what baseband version my phone has? Then I flashed with odin and was stuck in a bootloop. I then flashed PhilZ recovery and the boot hangs at the samsung logo.

Doh! sorry not reading what's in front of me. I did once read that you can get phone number via ADB, maybe the same will work for baseband?

This phone was not rooted prior to being stuck at the boot screen. Actually, it wasn't event stuck at the boot screen. Instead, it turned on and off. I installed PhilZ recovery and was able to backup all files. Then I tried to flash different versions of CM without success. They all get stuck at the boot screen now. No more turning on and off. I also tried to clear cache, wipe dalvik something and reset to factory. Is there something else that can be done? What would be the most likely cause for the failure?

Have you tried a clean install ? Wiping /system and /data partitions then installing a custom ROM .. This option can be found in philz under install a new ROM ..

Yes, I tried that. I also tried installing a ROM with a custom kernel that works on my other N7000, but it is still stuck at the boot screen.
