[Q] Enable band 2 on XT1103? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
Last year I bought a Nexus 6 (XT1103), and I fell in love with it. The thing is, in my current country I need LTE band 2 for my carrier, and according to gsmarena this model *should* have band 2 LTE. However 3G is all I get. Not even H/H+.
I tried using the "Engineering mode" app, and it only shows Band 12, 25, 26, and 41. How come?
Is there a way for me to enable band 2?
Phone is fully stock; unrooted, bootloader locked, original rom.
Any help would be appreciated!
EDIT: Corrected the bands it shows me on the Engineering App.

You can find how to add bands in the General subforum. But are you sure you have an XT1103 and not an XT1100? Because XT1103 does have band 2.

Well, at least that's what it says in the "regulatory information" under about phone on the phone settings.
I also bought it as an XT1103 model. Is there any chance it isn't an XT1103?
Btw, I'll check the General subforum, thanks. Been searching for this without any real answers for the whole week.

Reboot to bootloader (shut down, then hold Power and Volume Down buttons together for a few seconds) and see what it says under "Product/Variant". It should say "shamu XT1103" along with internal storage size.

Yup. Shamu XT1103 32GB P3A0
But how come I don't have LTE band 2 by default?
I've found a thread (this one) but it's aimed to enable band 2 on XT1100, so I'm not sure if I should follow the process.

Which country and carrier are you on?

Uruguay / Movistar.
But I bought the phone in the US, in Amazon.

You have a North American Nexus 6, so you don't need to use that thread you found to add bands, as the device already has the band you need. It's possible your account is not currently set up for LTE, so you should contact Movistar and have them assist you.

So, what you say is that what I see on the Engineering Mode is completely unrelated? If the problem can only be solved on Movistar's end, then I might never have LTE, I guess. Carriers here suck really bad.
I'm still going to contact them anyway and see what I can do (although I already tried that before). If I somehow manage to solve it I'll let you guys know.
EDIT:
Just spoke with Movistar, and they say the service is already activated for my account, and that should be at phone's end, not their's.

The Engineering Mode thing I'm not familiar with as I'm on a custom ROM. What version of Android are you on, and have you upgraded to the latest? It's possible this is an issue with the internal modem, and installing a new radio may fix your problem.

According to Movistar's support page, their Band 2 is the same 1900 MHz that Nexus 6 XT1103 has, but you need some special SIM card called "USIM". It's possible you have an older SIM that can't support LTE. Ask your carrier to send you a new USIM card. In the US carriers sometimes do this for free, but they may ask you to pay a small fee.

[Q] Droid 2 Global/Pro - unlocking?

Does anyone know if it will be possible to unlock the Droid 2 Global or Pro? I know they are CDMA devices by default but as they also have WCDMA SIM cards I would love to use this unlocked on WCDMA networks. I know some BB's on Verizon (and previously on Bell/Telus) were sold like this and unlocked so I'm guessing theoretically possible, but is it likely???
Hi that would be great so when I travel to EU I would just put a pre-paid SIM inside and avoid any Roaming charges.
Does anyone know? Maybe installing Cyanogen will unlock it?
Yes, I just unlocked my D2 Global yesterday. Call VZW Global Support and they will give you the unlock code as long as your line has been active with no late payments for at least 6 months.
There are still some kinks though because when I put in my foreign SIM and scanned for local GSM networks, nothing came up. Others on various forums have reported this issue as well. I'm hoping it's just that this happens while in the USA, but I'm waiting to see if anyone else can shed some light on it.

I wish that were the case lol. It turns out VZW may have somehow restricted access to the 850/1900 MHz GSM/UMTS bands, even though the device has the hardware to support them.
Q: Because it has two unlock codes. One unlocks any Sim card, the second code will be prompted only if the Sim card is not of any US carriers. Thanks

[Q] Droid 4 unlocked?

Does anyone knows if is possible to unlock a Droid 4 or to buy an unlocked one? I am in Venezuela and I want one of those phones. Thanks in advanced.
This is pretty much the same as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1537658
Right now, no it is not possible to get the Droid 4 unlocked as the GSM radio is not enabled and thus it is only running on Verizon CDMA/LTE bands. Hopefully with a firmware update Verizon will enable the rest of the radios in the device.
Thank you blpw , it is very nice to know it, I will wating for any update from Motorola/Verizon
How long does it usually take to get this update so we can use this phone overseas on our networks? I really want the Droid 4 and I have no idea how long new phones take to be "unlocked" for use at other countries. But when it does Im sure this device will make a killing for the seller on ebay

There is no information available to tell how long it will take. This is new territory, having an LTE phone from Verizon that is theoretically global capable. All previous VZW global phones were 3G and worked everywhere out of the box.
I have read that Verizon will enable GSM roaming for this phone with an firmware upgrade by the first half of the year.
Can firmware update change the frequency? I read this at a forum
So the phone is pointless to wait for if they ever do release that firmware update?
A firmware update can not add frequency compatibility to a phone, it is a hardware limitation.

You can have the hardware but without the properly software you have nothing. The same thing happened with the Xyboard from Verizon. Look at google: "Software update gives the Motorola Droid Xyboard 8.2 global roaming capabilities"
awww now I dont know if I should just get the HTC mytouch slide 4 or wait for the Droid, Ill be spewing if they dont release this global roaming software, I dont understand this frequency stuff and I still dont really know what Australia should require much, I know some of the stats but Ill be peaking if the Droid never gets this software then I wait for nothing.

[Q] Urgent: How to check exact model number on Moto X, 2013

Hi,
I got Moto X ( FCC ID: IHDT56PA2 from the box, which means its XT1053 model for unlocked GSM US version-retail, sold by Moto),it can be used with TMob. and ATT.
I was planning to use it in Canada on Wind Mobile, AWS bands 1700, and 2100. So far everything is theoretically OK, bands are there, BUT after plugging Sim from Wind phone does not recognizes the Wind network...maybe this is not what the box said??? How can I check exact model...it looks to me that maybe its xt1058 which does not have band 1700.
In menus About Phone I find : model Moto X only, Baseband version MSM8960PRO_BP_2323.038.123.00R, Kitkat 4.4.3 but nothing about exact model
Please help! It looks like I have to return it on Ebay...what other options do I have ?/

Thank you very much , it is so simple .......so I have xt1053, now it has 1700,2100 mhz (aws ? I presume) but it still does not work on my provider in Canada, Wind Mobile.
Today I visited another store of Wind M. and was told that to them it looks like phone works with their SIM only in 2g which is reserved for Wind Roaming only. When I go to Settings-Mobile Networks-Preferred Network Type: I get only 2options :Automatic (ticked) and 2G not indicated. Is it the same on yours XT-1053
On my Galaxy s2x I get different choices such as:GSM/HSPA (Auto), GSM only , HSPA only so my phone which is pentaband works perfect. Here I dont have an option to forced it to work on HSPA only.
Any suggestions ??

Before you worry about rooting or anything drastic I suggest you take the situation one step at a time:
- Forget data, do you have cell signal? if no, check sim.
- Is your APN setting correct for your network? check Settings->Wireless & Networks More->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names
- To set HSPA only you're going to have to use the "Phone Info" screen. Normally to get that screen you'd dial *#*#4636#*#* but that doesn't work so you need a workaround. if you have a third party launcher or if you have the app called Anycut you can create an activity shortcut to Phone Info on your home screen. Another option is to use apps that open the Phone Info for you, and that's all they do. I use the app called Radio Switcher.
- Once you're in Phone Info screen be careful not to touch anything except the option that says "Set preferred network type:" and select WCDMA Only.
- This setting might not normally stick upon reboot. For my experimentation and success in making it stick upon reboot see my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55810041&postcount=11
And BTW the back of your phone should have the model number near the bottom, it's just hard to see because they imprinted it to look invisible when looking straight at it. Just twist and turn and hold it so the light catches it just right to make it easy to see.
Gentlemen and especially dtg7,
Thank You very much for your help, Radio Switcher works beautifully with my XT1053 ...WCDMA Only sticks even after reboot, perfect...now only how to get rid of that notification about available update to kitkat 4.4.4. Disabling update will probably require root, but here's one thing you can try without root. In Settings->Apps->All find the app MotorolaOTA and open it's settings. Then just uncheck the "show notifications" box.
With root though, that has already been discussed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/apps-to-block-ota-rooted-moto-x-t2714410
but before that you'd have to root your phone. to do that you and being on 4.4.3 you have two options:
1) unlock your bootloader, flash a custom recovery, then flash superSU. details are abundantly available. important thing to note is unless you have the Developer Edition you'll lose any warranty you had. if you don't want to lose warranty you have option two.
2) use TowelPieRoot method. this is an exploit that can be done on a locked bootloader so your warranty would be fine. http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/themes-apps/root-towelpieroot-motorola-devices-t2825059
If you do decide to root, whichever method you use, make sure to return your phone to stock condition before trying to take future updates, like the one to Lollipop. For method one that means flashing back stock recovery. For method two I believe the towelpieroot app comes with an uninstall option. For the OTA disabling that means undoing whatever you did.
FYI I did take the 4.4.4 update and I can confirm battery did take a hit. Going from 4.4.2 to 4.4.3 battery gained a lot it seemed, visibly so. The first few days of 4.4.4 were pretty bad. After clearing device cache and after a few days it became more reasonable but still seemed less than 4.4.3. Other than that have had no problems with 4.4.4.
Why did I take 4.4.4 well for one it's a security update, nothing changed from 4.4.3 except a fix for security issues. second, my guess was we won't have to wait long for lollipop after Nov 3. time will tell if that's correct.
Thankq

General Questions before buying

I'm thinking of buying this phone off Amazon.ca (F8132 model)
I just wanted to confirm two things:
Even though the phone has dual sim, can it still work properly with just one sim card and all the apps will be ok?
Can this phone be rooted and have custom recovery installed? Is there a chance the bootloader cannot be unlocked and it can't?
Thanks.
The phone should be OK with one SIM, but this is international version. I doubt it has all North American LTE bands, so you better check, or you may not have 4G.

I asked and they said "it has band 4 to use in Canada, it supports LTE" so it sounds like it does. Is this correct, or did they avoid answering the question? I'm not sure how this stuff works.
They answered the question partially. Band 4 is used in Canada but it's not the only one. For better performance you need all bands that your operator uses.
LTE bands by operator:
http://www.androidcentral.com/everything-you-need-know-about-4g-lte-canada
Phone bands:
https://www.frequencycheck.com/mode...nce-lte-a-dual-f8132-sony-dora-ds#frequencies
According to the table above this phone has all essential North American bands. So, most likely you will be OK.

1. I use F8132 and use one sim only. It's no problem.
2. You must unlock bootloader before root.

Note 9 and Firstnet

Good evening all,
I am really hoping someone here can answer this question for me. I have a Note 9 purchased from T-Mobile model SN-N960U. It has been carrier unlocked using the tmobile app. What I was looking to do was take the phone with me over to AT&T Firstnet and use it there. The problem is band 14, which is the primary band firstnet uses. Will my phone work with Firstnet on band 14??? I called Firstnet and they said it would work. The manager at the local AT&T corporate store said since it is a T-Mobile phone that it will not work with band 14. What makes things even more confusion is it appears all Note 9's have the same model number regardless of the carrier it was made for. So can someone here confirm for me if it will or will not work on band 14 for Firstnet?
Thanks!
From what I have been able to find out the N960U does not support the use of LTE band 14. Check here for more information: https://www.phonemore.com/samsung-galaxy-note-9-sm-n960u-512gb/specs/4164

But then you look at GSM arena's site on the Note 9 it says something completely different.

In that case I would take your device to a AT&T retail branch and ask if they have a test SIM, which they can use on your device.
Yes. The Note 9 will absolutely work on FirstNet. Doesn't matter if it's a T-Mo device, they are all identical. When you put in the FirstNet SIM it will provision for that carrier.

I actually did try that today and they said they do not have "test" ones and can only do it if they actually setup an account which would require me porting my number over from Tmobile and going through all that.

Mr. Orange thanks for that article, that is one I had not seen yet while doing my research. Are you sure that article is not talking about just ATT "branded" Note 9's? I am cautious because when I put it in to service mode *#2263# it does not list band 14 with all the other ones it has. Is it some kind of hidden band that will enable itself when a Firstnet SIM is put in to the phone?

It doesn't matter. ALL US Note 9s are identical hardware-wise and capable of supporting the same bands.

Nope. This has been discussed many, many times. Since the S8/+ all the US (and Canadian) Galaxy devices have identical hardware. That is why we can flash the N960U1 firmware on the N960U and vice versa. If the hardware was different, it wouldn't flash. It's just different firmware and carrier features preloaded on each device version.
N960U1 = N960U = N960W
