Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically during first boot. To prevent this, use Google to find the proper key combo to enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this step, you will have to repeat the install.

Is there a problem with rebooting from recovery? Almost never am I ever able to reboot to system from recovery. It just freezes if I click reboot to system. At first, I thought I flashed wrong and there is no OS in the phone, but later I just switched it off and switched it on again, and it worked just fine. Also, later I just went to recovery and selected reboot to system and it froze.

[GUIDE] Magisk Root without TWRP

Hello guys.
I've seen this device development for custom rom and custom recovery are slow (they did it in privat currently, invited user or someone who want to join). The unofficial twrp having issue with encrypted device (asking for password). So internal storage in twrp isnt accesible and need to format data to make it works. Of course ROOTING with TWRP is still POSSIBLE by placing magisk to extSdcard anyway.
And this guide is a SECOND chance for you who wants to ROOT your phone WITHOUT TWRP. But, need a PC. The root method here are from magisk thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445 .
Things needed :
- Unlocked Bootloader
- PC with ADB and Fastboot installed
- boot.img of your miui rom. You can grab it (open with winRar) from fastboot firmware (.tgz) xiaomi redmi S2. Download the firmware file in xiaomi site or in this section thread. The version are reccomended to be the same as your current miui version.
- Magisk Manager.apk https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/manager-v6.0.1/MagiskManager-v6.0.1.apk
- Know how to use minimal adb and fastboot.
Again this method does not need root, and also does not require a custom recovery. boot.img & UBL is a must.
1. Open Magisk Manager
2. Press Install > Install > Patch Boot Image File, and select your boot.img file
3. Magisk Manager will now patch your boot image, and store it in Internal Storage/Download/patched_boot.img
4. Copy the patched boot image to your PC. Place it in Minimal ADB & Fastboot directory.
5. Flash the patched boot image to your device. Here is the command :
fastboot flash boot boot.img
6. If adb say "Okay" twice, mean it succesfully.
Type : fastboot reboot
7. Wait your phone to reboot.
8. Voila!
I've done this method with my Redmi 5 Plus and not having any issue. Technically, bootloop risk are very low. Because magisk disable dm-verity.
I dont know someone already make a guide about this here. But its not detailed. So, ill keep this thread on. For root with custom recovery TWRP here.

TWRP 3.3.1-0 Released
May 22, 2019
TWRP 3.3.1-0 is out now for most currently supported devices.
What's new in 3.3.1-0:
* Fix selinux issues during formatting - dianlujitao
* Various fixes for toybox and toolbox builds - CaptainThrowback and bigbiff
* Flash both A and B partitions when installing a recovery ramdisk - Dees_Troy
* Add option to uninstall TWRP app from /system - Dees_Troy
* Create digest for subpartitions - bigbiff
Want to get notifications when we release new versions of TWRP? Install the TWRP app and select your device!
We need your help! The bulk of TWRP work is done by a handful of people on a volunteer basis. We have pushed most of our device files to our github and we have a gerrit instance. If you have the ability, please help us maintain our official devices and/or add your device to our official device list. Thanks in advance!
Update 28/7/19
3.3.1-1 build released.
Current status - Beta (tested working)
Treble supported
Bugs: slight delay before touch starts working.
You flash this at your own risk. Please ensure you have the stock ROM to hand downloaded from SAMMOBILE in case of problems. This will trip the knox counter.
NOTE: ON ANDROID 5.1.1> DEVICES IT IS NECESSARY TO GO TO:
Settings -> Developer Options -> OEM unlocking
AND ENABLE OEM UNLOCK FIRST OR YOU MAY ENCOUNTER 'BLOCKED BY FRP LOCK' WHEN FLASHING.
*****INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:*****
Flash with ODIN in the AP slot.
1. Put your device in DOWNLOAD mode.
(Plug in the USB cable and then hold POWER + VOL DOWN + VOL UP)
2. Load the respective file below into the AP slot, uncheck Auto-reboot and hit start.
twrp_3.2.3-1_J610_21230
twrp_3.3.1-1_J610x_28719
3. After flashing and ODIN reports PASS immediately force reboot to recovery. Do NOT let the device boot to the OS.
You should now see TWRP recovery.
4. Flash the V3 RMM bypass zip
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79745844&postcount=627
NOTE: FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE STEPS ABOVE IMPLICITLY WILL RESULT IN STOCK RECOVERY REPLACING TWRP AT FIRST BOOT AND BECOMING RMM LOCKED FOR 7 DAYS.
I ALSO SUGGEST BACKING UP ANYTHING YOU NEED ON INTERNAL STORAGE. AT SOME POINT YOU MAY EXPERIENCE A 'VERIFICATION FAILED MESSAGE' .
THIS IS NORMAL, BUT WILL REQUIRE THE DATA PARTITION TO BE FORMATTED IN TWRP.
5. Reboot to TWRP (Do not boot to the OS yet)
***** ROOT INSTRUCTIONS:*****
1. Flash the Forced encryption disabler patch. This is only required if you wish to have full functionality in TWRP.
Flashing this will disable Samsung's forced encryption. Disabling encryption will allow TWRP to mount the data partition.
After flashing the patch it is necessary to *FORMAT* (not wipe) the /DATA partition using the FORMAT DATA button under the wipe options.
PLEASE NOTE THIS WILL DELETE EVERYTHING ON INTERNAL STORAGE AND FACTORY RESET THE DEVICE, SO BACK UP ANYTHING YOU WISH TO KEEP.
J6+_oreo_forced_encryption_disabler
2. To root I suggest installing the latest Magisk beta as this is a currently supported project, SuperSu is no longer getting active development.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
OREO ONLY: (Below is a DEFEX patched kernel for Oreo. Some root apps may not work correctly without this kernel):
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=1395089523397922702
PIE ONLY: Due to some new securities in Samsung's latest Pie kernels, root will not work with the stock kernel. The patched kernel below is required to gain root on Pie.
(NOTE: flashing a custom kernel on PIe breaks the lockscreen. Ensure NO lockscreen is enabled before installing the kernel.)
J610FXXU1BSDF_patched_boot_28719
3. Enjoy your rooted device.

It only patches the fstab in the vendor partition.
If it's boot looping it means that dm-verity is not disabled.
Did you flash Magisk first?
my bad,i flashed 17.1 which was useless and not working
reflashed 17.3 and the encryption disabler and phone booted.
twrp is fully functioning and phone is decrypted,
thank you
Will you kindly attach the proper magisk 17.3 zip file?

Do i need to perform a format to 'data' partition?
Would i loose all my phone apps and everything?
What about RMM Bypass?
Still touch does not work for me.
And device does not boot to os, instead boots into twrp recovery. Also power key does not work when device turns off the screen in twrp recovery. Volume keys keep the screen alive, but touch does not work.
Let me do a full odin flash.

You do realise that is exactly the same build as the one in the OP?
Don't you mean this one?

The only one that works is the one I've posted in my previous post which must be the same one you have used.
It seems the build in the OP was the previous not working build which I'd linked by mistake.
Now fixed.
Apologies to anyone that downloaded it, fixed version is now up.

One that worked for me is from other thread, labled "Twrp /Exposed" like this. You know, you and dope77 worked on.
Post # 25: Check that thread and you might find that.

Whatever is in that thread is now in this thread.
So you must have flashed the same twrp that is posted in the OP.
It's strange to notify that my J6+ does not connect to PC after flashing latest Magisk-v18.0(18000).zip file.

Hi,
This TWRP 3.3.1-0 can not detect my SD-card (recovery.log). Your previous TWRP 3.3.1-0 that I got from you, mernurisha, can see the SD-card in the recovery mode.
Hello, I am asked to install the Image whether on the Boot or on the Recovery partition. Which one do I have to take?

Okay, done. And how to full wipe? Mean which partitions? Dalvik, System, Internal storage, Data, Cache? It is been a long time since my last installing
Arrghhh, I forgot to wipe now I got Error 7
Oh, I think the PixelExperience cannot be installed on the serranoveltxx (with the two x). I thought because danil's LineageOS 14 was running on my device
Do I have to reinstall the TWRP to an older version now?
Okay, I should have to reboot TWRP *facepalm* :silly:

Hi
i catched a bug.
when backing up more than one partition TRWP restarts after first digest generation of the first backed up partition
thank you for your work and also thanks for providing a more recent build of lineageos 16
new twrp update
New synced TWRP source.
update for SD-Card not recognized
For people with external SD-card problem (ffox.pl, radiac1987, JFK1975) ...
Please test the last twrp and report if your SD-card is recognized in the TWRP.
Maybe I can fix this issue for next LineageOS and PixelExperience rom.

Works great in the TWRP. I will check later if it also detects my SD-card on your ROMs.

I confirm the TWRP works perfect. Even the error "/sbin/postrecoveryboot.sh process ended with ERROR: 1" disappeared. Thank you. Your latest ROMs still don't recognize my SD-card.

Okay. The last twrp recognizes your sd card, right?
For me it is important first, that the sd card is recognized in the last twrp.
Then I can do that for my next roms updates too.
I have installed CWM recovery and Cyanogen Serranolte android version 6 on my S4Mini
I saw that there is a Lineage OS16 version availabel for the S4 Mini. Tried to flash that with CWM recovery - that failed
So I try to download TWRP 3.3.1 via Odin3 version 3.1.3 over CWM - but Odin Download of TWRP (https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=297571 ) recovery.tar fails with size error

Extract the recovery.img from .tar and install it via older twrp as an img file. That's all.
The most frequently created copies are damaged. Their creations take up to 30 minutes. This happens when the default digest option is enabled. After switching off digest the process is saved in 4 minutes.

I've never used the digest generation and have no problems restoring backups.
Impossible to download TWRP-3.3.1-0-serranovelte.tar
Hello,
Thanks for your incredible job,
but unfortunately , there is no possibility to download TWRP-3.3.1-0-serranovelte.tar, because any mirror site is found on android file host...
Could you repair that maybe ?
thanks a lot
