__[ REVIEW: GPEL 2nd-Generation Tempered Glass Screen Protector]__ - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Accessories

A few days ago I received my 2nd-generation GPEL Tempered Glass Screen Protector (TGSP) for the Galaxy S7 Edge. I ordered mine in Black. Unlike the 1st-gen black TGSP which was actually dark blue in color, the 2nd-gen black TGSP is really black in color. If that discrepancy bothered anyone before, the revised and updated color should please you.
The GPEL TGSP was shipped to me inside the same packaging as the 1st-gen. That is, the TGSP was well-protected and not damaged at all.
This is what the exterior packaging looks like.
Once you take the TGSP out of the package, this is how it looks like, front and back.
The glue/adhesive setup on the back of the TGSP looks to be the same as the 1st-gen GPEL TGSP.
Installing the TGSP was simple and easy. Use the included alcohol wipe to clean the phone, dry it with the provided microfiber cloth, remove any dust particles with the dust sticker tapes, and carefully align then press the TGSP down on the phone. Afterwards, use your fingers and/or rubber squeegee tool to apply pressure to the TGSP to ensure adhesion.
The first thing I immediately noticed was how clear the TGSP glass was. Unlike the 1st-gen GPEL, which had this sparkly sheen all across the glass (especially noticeable on white backgrounds), this 2nd-gen GPEL does not have any sheen at all.
There is, however, some dots that show up. They are not, however, distracting because they become only visible under certain angles and under direct bright sunlight.
With no distracting sheen anymore and barely-visible dots, my experience of viewing content on my phone has improved very much compared to the 1st-gen GPEL TGSP. This is a definite and clear upgrade in quality.
Another quite visible upgrade is to the oleographic coating used on the 2nd-gen GPEL TGSP. The glass does a much, much better job at repelling finger grease & smudges. It is finally on par with traditional flat TGSP's.
As for the ability of the TGSP to adhere correctly to the phone, I've had no issues (I had no adhesion issues with the 1st-gen GPEL as well). The glue is strong and the TGSP stays on without creaking when used together with my thin-fit cases - OEM Samsung Leather case, Match2 clear TPU case, and the Tauri clear TPU case.
With other medium- to heavy-duty cases, the TGSP will most likely lift up or crack. But that's not a Con for this TGSP - that is just how it is for curved TGSP's in general.
And finally about sensitivity. The sensitivity is better for me than the 1st-gen GPEL. I use a Playstore keyboard app called MultiLing and on that keyboard I had difficulty registering touches on the 1, Q, and A buttons. Not so with this 2nd-gen GPEL. The TGSP feels to be the same thickness as the 1st-gen but somehow touch sensitivity got better.
My verdict? This is a GREAT TGSP from a great company with good customer service. I was already satisfied and content with the 1st-gen GPEL despite its shimmering glass but this 2nd-gen GPEL is even better in every way. I have no qualms recommending this TGSP to my fellow GS7 Edge owners. :good:

How long has it been on your device? The issues didn't crop up on mine til the second and third day. That's when the adhesive started failing and the popping and crackling sounds started. The second day is when the sensitivity issues cropped up. End of third day it came off and went in the trash. This is the 1st Gen I'm talking about. If you go more than a week with zero issues on 2nd Gen I might be interested.

I've had it installed since June 22nd Wednesday. So today is the third day. No issues whatsoever. Due to possible follow-up issues that might reveal itself later on, I waited before posting up this review. I'll update again in a week and on later dates.
My older 1st-gen GPEL TGSP was installed for more than 60 days with no adhesion issues.

Then why the second generation if you had no issues for 60 days on first?

B/c I got the 2nd-gen for free from GPEL. When I told GPEL about the shimmer on the 1st-gen GPEL, they offered a free warranty replacement. I waited until the 2nd-gen became available before claiming my replacement.

I received my ZeroLemon 8500mah battery case & it wasn't compatible with the TGSP. Just to make my phone fit, I had to cut the rubber case with an Exacto knife so it wouldn't lift the bottom part of the TGSP.
After I managed to make the phone go inside the case, my problems continued. The top-left part of the TGSP lifted up & I lost touch sensitivity on the right side of the TGSP.
Once I went back to using my Samsung leather case, I was still having touch issues. So I removed the TGSP, heated up the glue with a heat gun on low setting, and reapplied. Fortunately, everything is good again.

Thanks for the review. The main problem with my Gen 1 is how easily it attracts smudges which had to be frequently wiped off. Is Gen 2 more oleophobic? My Gen 2 has shipped but I am away at the moment so won't see it for two weeks.

Does it fit with the spigen thin fit or the uag case?

Don't know about the UAG case but it should be fine with the Spigen thin fit.

Could you put the link in the description of where you bought it from and price? Otherwise, great review!

How can I tell if mine is 1st or 2nd Gen? I bought mine from the GPEL store last Friday but it has this nasty glittery effect on the screen that makes it unbearable to look at. Edge sensitivity is also worse then without it. I ended up taking it off after 5 or so hours.

I caved, and finally bought one for my phone. I installed it without any issues, but it bothers me. There is a rainbow effect when looking at my display despite my screen being perfectly clear upon installing it. I'm going to call/email GPEL because I was expecting it to actually be clear which is certainly is not. I like the fit, no real loss of sensitivity (maybe a very sight around at the edge), but overall aside from the ugly rainbowing its great. I'm using it with the Samsung OEM Leather case aswell

Haven't tried a tgsp on the s7 edge yet, does the fingerprint sensor still work? Is there a deep pit on the home button?

The fingerprint works just fine. It's a bit sunken in but nothing major nor bothersome (at least not to me).

Just pulled the trigger. Hopefully get it sometime next week. I hate not having a glass screen protector, after having shattered the screen 2 days after getting the phone. Makes me nervous sometimes.

Got it yesterday and installed it right away. It works well, but I have a bit of an orange peal effect visually on black screens, and the rainbow pixelation effect on white screens in sunlight.
It almost doesnt fit with my Unicorn Beetle Rugged Holster Case. and it seems like the near the edges, sensitivity is off a little bit. I may keep it on long enough for a better one to come out, or for the price of the AmazingThing to drop. I just hate not having a screen protector on since I shattered the screen within a day of having the phone.

Screen protector that actually covers the entire screen?

Can anyone recommend a high quality screen protector that covers the entire screen?
Spigen's 2-3 mm gap on each side is NOT the same as covering the entire screen.
Can someone comment on Zagg?
I don't think any of them go right to the edge, because the glass is not perfectly flat.
It is slightly rounded off toward the edges.

I heard from a manager of Realook that it will be launching a soft protective film that provides 100% convex screen cover for the SGN II. I will post a review and some pics once I have mine covered. I am told that he will be getting the supply within a few weeks.

Will the S pen leave marks on these soft ones?

I have the zagg "smudge proof" and it doesn't scratch or leave marks with the s pen. Also has absolutely no rubbery feel, orange peel effect or sticky feel. My finger glides better across it then the glass itself and is actually FULL screen. It is a wet apply but I didn't have any issues at all. (Normally I hate zagg for the rubbery orange peal crap but this one is great)
I bought it from best buy just fyi.

is pretty darn close to the edge on mine and fits well around the top speaker and camera hole, although it is just a straight cut out not invididual holes for everything but for $4 shipped seems I have no complaints compared to the zaggHD or skinomi I had on my GS3. Stylus is not leaving imprints but I have only been playing with it for about 7 hours so far

Moshi IVisor Anti fingerprint, Anti Smudge Screen protector is available on the AT&T website. It fit edge to edge on my original Note (of course i was using one made for the OG Note) and im going to order this one for my Note 2. It was thick (not too think) and really resilient. And i really likes the schnazzy black coloring around the buttons Although on the website it says it will ship within 14 business days but is available to order. I dont know if that means it's on backorder or what but, im going to give it a try anyway. Its totally worth the money. I had it on my OG Note for 6 months and after countless use of finger, spen, drops, and rough encounters with sharp edges, it lasted through and through. I even was able to remove it, wash it, and reapply it no problems.

I am currently trying this one now,
http://www.bodyguardz.com/screenguardz-samsung-galaxy-note-2-cases-screen-protectors-covers-shields-skins-films.html
it covers the entire screen but jury is still out on how good it is. They say it takes 72 hours to fully cure (gel application) but in all honestly, it feels a bit soft.
Those wet application protectors don't play well with the S-pen.
Has anyone tried the liquid armor from dynaflo?

I was planning on using that and a flip case.

FYI for those that care, these are wet application protectors. I personally do NOT like wet application protectors.

Not at all. It is applied with water. So it doesn't come off at all.
FYI. I ordered an Exo Skin the same time as this. the Exo Skin has already arrived and been installed while this hasn't even shipped yet.
And that's with the extra $.99 for "priority" processing.
Tell you what, the clarity, feel and resistance to fingerprints/oils of these is much better than VZW ones. I ordered two last week at regular price and received them in 4 days. I ordered a few more at this price.

Pretty much covers whole screen except camera/sensor/notification light/earpiece. It goes edge-to-edge which may be a problem with some cases. Though I find these wet application protectors are not as prone to having edges pushed up by cases since they adhere better to the screen. Haven't had an issue with my diztronic case and this screen protector.

I purchased some of these protectors and installed them on my G2. The feel is good, installation was typical of a soft film protector. I installed the screen guard and back skin two days ago, and have noticed a problem.
On my screen I noticed what appeared to be scratches. I was afraid I scratched the glass before I installed the protector. The scratches run in the long direction of the screen and vary from 1/16th to 3/8ths of an inch long and are about 1 to 2 pixel rows wide, and are randomly located all over the screen..
On closer inspection I noticed on the back skin a number of scratches that look just like the defects I see in the screen. These did not show up until last night, so I have to conclude that they are defects in the adhesive application from manufacturing, that did not show up until the moisture from the protector installation had evaporated. I was getting ready to return the phone as defective until I noticed the same defects on the back skin.
I only paid $2 for the set, so still a good deal. But slightly annoying.
Definitely worth two bucks
I've had mine applied for over 3 days now, long enough that I can give a decent opinion of the product. As other members said, these are wet application protectors, and I was concerned when mine showed up in a plain white envelope SOAKING wet. Luckiky it didnt seem to have any impact on the installation. I've applied dozens of wet application protectors, and this was no easier or harder than the rest. There is a very slight orange peel texture visible (nowhere near Zagg level), but i can not feel it. The fit is great, leaving no gap on either side of the screen, and an uncovered area at the top and bottom about the thickness of my thumbnail (it looks like it would accommodate a Ringke Slim-type case if one became available without touching the protector). It is physically tackier (or less smooth) than higher end films, but not unbearably so. The fit of the back cover is acceptable, and does WONDERS for the G2s normally slick back. You will want to do as the instructions say and let the pieces that apply to rounded areas dry completely before trying to stick down. My only real complaint is that almost all edges have no bevel or taper to them, attracting lint and just feeling odd when you touch them, like you might accidentally lift an area up (which hasnt heppened, once dried, it feels very secure, but it's always in the back of my mind).

Take a look at the screen when it is displaying a white or grey background, and look for rainbowy/glimmery lines running the long direction of the phone, They are hard to see until you notice one, then you will see them all over. I ordered two sets of protectors, I'm hoping this one is an oddball. If you don't see the lines I might install the other set. You have to look very carefully for them.

Zagg Screen protectors

Greetings alls
I wanted to share my feelings about Zaggs offerings for our phones.
Original HD - Easiest to install with 0-2% dust, however after speaking to Zagg CS about a rainbow issue I was told that over time it will develop and there is nothing you can do about it. In short it goes on fine but after a few weeks you'll notice little lines going down the screen with a rainbow effect, this is how Zagg describe 'normal'
Dry HD - Great idea, works well 0-1% dust, however after installing 6 over a period of time you will notice blemishes, if you install the protector word for word on the instructions you will end up with a line on the protector where the 2nd half of the installation film peels off. In addition to this anything hard coming in contact with the screen like your fingernails, doorkeys. another phone will leave indents in the adhesive under the protector. it doesn't fade or improve over time. No rainbow effect though.
Contour Glass - hardest to install properly 5-10% dust, these seem the best solution, however i bought one and found that the screen has no adhesive which didn't impress me. then the issues start to align it properly if the alignment is out by a fraction then the edges of the screen are far less responsive, not good at all. Because the lack of adhesive on the screen you get the obvious impression that there is a gap which looks horrid too. I've had the protector on and off so many times because the adhesive isn't great and lets dust in, defeating in part the point of a protector.
All Zagg products are expensive and don't work perfectly and i'm starting to think there is no solution for curved phones.
Well thats horrible news... I was waiting patiently for the ZAGG curved protector to be released and now its not got good reviews... at $55 for it I can't justify the price on a chance.
Yeah unfortunately zagg is thebbest option but there not all that either.

If the amazingthing screen protector didn't work for me, I was going to go for liquid shields case friendly protector. $7.85 shipped from them direct or ebay has them but more expensive. Tried skinomi but it pulled up with case, and that was before they offered case friendly
I've used Zagg HD dry and yeah it gets blemishes & has orange peel but nothing that stops clarity. It stays put with either samsung view cover led case, PDair holster case and spigen wallet case. If it ever gets to the point where blemishes interfere with clarity then I'll return it for another. I also used Zagg glass on htc M8 - brilliant and Zagg films on iphones 3-4. On that experience I'd stand by Zagg. Just my 4 cents worth

Glass protector peeling off from the top left corner. Is it common?

Hey guys and gals, I have my 5X for a little over a month now and since the day I got it, I installed a tempered glass screen protector on it. At first there were no bubbles/spots, but now I'm starting to notice a little bubble (like it's peeling off) at the top left corner, near the front camera. Was casually talking with a friend about how much we enjoy our 5Xs when he said that his screen protector was coming off from the top left corner as well. He showed me his 5X, with a pretty big "bubble" under the screen protector with the size of a fingertip, again at the top left corner. So I was thinking is it just ours protectors that bad (mine is unbranded chinese for $1 and his is a branded $10-15 one) or just the 5X is unnoticeable uneven and its common to have the screen protector peeling off after months of usage?
P.S. Comming from a Xperia M2, I applied a cheap $1 glass protector 2 years ago and it still as good as new.

Yep. I just removed my screen protector for that reason. It looked ugly. Will go protector less for a while, Try to break the psychological barrier. With Gorilla Glass 3 and above there is no point really for them anyway.
Do you have a case on it? I would guess maybe something else bumped it? I haven't had any problems. Either way they are so cheap, just replace it.
I had a screen protector on it, but I didn't like how it felt, so I've only been using a case now.
Never had this issue with IntelliGlass tempered glass on my 5x.

All depends on how well you applied it. I've had my cheap Pleson on since release back in October.

Tempered glass for me too. Top right corner has very slight peel back. My guess is the screen rolls off very slightly at the corners. Barely more noticeable than a fingerprint smudge so I've let it be. The rest of it is flawless so I'll leave well enough alone.
I agree with going protector-less. On my N4 before this and on my N5x, I only had a regular bumper case. I never had anything beyond a superficial tiny scratch on the N4 towards the end of it's life with me, which was three years. If you're not carrying it somewhere with keys or similar, you'll be fine. If I have to carry it in a bag where something can scratch it, I put it in a lens pouch that I got with my sunglasses.

Its not only for scratch protection but break protection. In theory the tempered glass breaks before the actually display's glass. Kind of like a crumple zone in cars which absorb the force. I've seen videos of people peeling the protector off and it's fine underneath. However, I'm sure with enough force you could possible break both but I haven't seen videos of that.

The screen protector breaks first because it's not Gorilla Glass.
I think it only makes the device heavier.

I dunno. The only time I broke a screen was on the N4 when hiking and climbing over something so that I bend the phone in my back pocket. Or the N5 when i stumbled down the stairs and landed on my ass, nearly breaking the phone in half (again in my back pocket).
There's no reason for protectors, screen is fine as is.
Also, my biggest issue with screen protectors is that they get more oily and more fingerprint smudge than the screen does (depends on manufacturer though... my OnePlus One for example was more oily than screen protectors.)

So in your case, keeping your phone in the back pocket is the issue. LOL. I take having to wipe my screen a little more often (Which I don't think I'm really doing) than having to deal with a cracked display.

I used glass protector, it peeled off from sides and got very smudgy then I replaced it with a cheap plastic one and it gives basic scratch protection while being cleaner than glass one. Secondly the plastic one doesn't peel off like glass protectors. I have ordered Supcase for drop protection.

OnePlus 5T Official Tempered Glass Screen Protector Review

Hi folk,
With another OnePlus product comes another OnePlus attempt at making a tempered glass screen protector which works for it. Will it be this time that is the magic attempt?
If you dont want to or can't watch the video here are my thoughts:
Yes, they seem to have finally made a tempered glass which fits perfectly on the screen without much cut off. I say much as I think there is still a tiny cut off, but it's nowhere near as noticeable as it was on the 3/3t or 5. If you want to take a look, its on the video at around the 4:04 mark.
The quality is excellent, you can barely feel or see that it's there. There are no sharp edges as the screen tapers off at the edge. It's a full glue screen protector so there is no dot matrix or rainbox effects. You do however have to be fairly careful whilst applying it and taking it off its bed as it feels like it could snap fairly easy if you rush it.
Pros:
Good fit
Feels premium
No dot matrix
No rainbox effect
Cons:
Pricey
Could break easily whilst installing
On the pricey mark, if OP have managed to make this perfect this time, I'd expect third party manufacturers to release a similar product soon at a cheaper price. So if you want to wait and do that I wouldn't blame you.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Jono
Thanks for that, good to know as I ordered one with my 5T.
Hopefully there is a decent bunch of 3rd party ones too.
A spigen tempered glass is my all time favorite screen guard.

Thanks for this. I wanted to know how much it will cut of the screen but its much lesser than earlier.
But i need to disagree something with you. You (and many others) said it was issue etc. on OP3/3T/5 what last TGSP cutted off screen. Well it wasnt really issue or fault on Oneplus side. They needed to choose to have adhesives only on sides and no cut-off or adhesives on fully but had to cut-off. That was because of OP3/3T/5 front glass design where glass started ro bend (2.5D) earlier than usual. Thats why black borders was bigger as otherwise you would get ugly halo's and nobody likes that.
About price. Dont know where you leave but here in Finland 20€ price is nearly cheapest TGSP avaible here. Usually TGSP's here costs around 25-50€ depending of phone model so 20€ is more than just normal price for us. So okay maybe its little pricey compared ro your country but on many others it isnt.
This is my first OP device so I know nothing about past issues, but this is by far the best fitting, best sealing TGSP I have ever installed. Typically with screen protectors the edges do not want to seal/stick but the squeegee made quick work of getting all the bubbles out. There are a few pieces of inevitable lint but not one single bubble.
It does cut a tiny bit of the screen off which gives a weird depth to the screens appearance so for that I give it 9/10. If it was totally clear or just had the black at the top and bottom it would be 10/10 for sure.
Is it possible to use tpu case along with this 3d tempered glass?

I'm using the original one and is perfect with the original case/Bumper.
Mine is not so perfect and the screen is slightly cover on the edge. is not a huge problem, but is noticeble if you see the phone from a side.
in any case is far better than the original plastic protector and perfect with a case.

It works with all the official cases you can get from OnePlus and I see no reason to why it wouldn't work with a standard TPU. Will let you know more when I get some cases.

Because of edge alignment, it doesn't work on the OP5, so I'll order only if it's going to work with tpu case i got.

Does anyone notice that the display looks a little grainy with the OnePlus tempered glass? I haven't used the phone without the protector, so I'm not too sure if it's the protector or the display that is a little grainy.

The one that came in the box. I want to order a 3d tempered glass and a premium case so that they can work together. Looking yet for a compatible combo.

I just removed the protector to see how the screen looks naked. The "grainy-ness" is gone. I also noticed a potential problem with the protector. The adhesive doesn't go all the way to the top or bottom of the protector, so when I removed it I found a lot of dust stuck to the top and bottom bezel of the phone. This could cause scratches. Even though the scratches would not be on the display, I don't want scratches anywhere on the glass. If I keep this phone I'll try an IQshield.
With the bubbles settling behind, a lot of little dust has been captured.
I also notice grainy-ness. I'm likely going to ditch it and just go naked...
I just got my for 10€. And yes, it still crops a bit from both sides but not like OP3/3T/5. And yes, there is grainy-ness as stated above. You cant notice on black background but on white yes.
I bought the '5T full scratch protection' bundle with my phone. I have an unopened "3D Tempered Glass Screen Protector" and an opened (but unused) "Sandstone Protective Case". My plan was going to be to use the case until Spigen comes out with a 5T case, but I just decided to rock the case that came with my 5T instead.

To be frank I wouldn't have noticed the grainy screen till I read your comment. But now that I've read it.... The screen protector does induce the grainy effect. It's a perfect fit imho, though it definitely does give out that grainy effect. I'm guessing I'll stop noticing it in a couple of days time.
I had an extra IQshield (wet apply) protector for a Pixel 2 XL. I cut a little off the top and it fit fine. I must say, the IQshield is very clear, no grainy screen for me.
I have to put my 2 cents in on this. The official tempered glass is pretty great. I had no issue installing, it stayed in place, zero bubble at all, and feels great. using it with the official sandstone case.
