Is it possible to use SD card as internal storage on X Perf? - Sony Xperia X Performance Questions & Answers

This function should be included in Android 6.0 but Sony disable it. Does anyone know how to enable this function?

So the pop window did not show on your XXP?
Mine neither.

No this message showed up. Also no option in settings. I've emailed Sony and the answer is they don't have this function.

Many large companies disable this function, as memory cards is slower and less reliable than internal memory, and more chance of creating error.

Installing apps on device vs. storage card

I recently bough a Tilt with a 2G SD card and have been trying to get educated on WM as well as this phone. I did "remove the bloatware", installed KaiserTweak and a few others, and have begun to wonder what is the best practice in choosing the "device" vs. "storage card" as far as performance goes. Are there rules of thumb as far as certain apps or types of apps that will really run better when installed to the device? Thanks.

If you have an application that is constantly running (such as today plugins) etc. in the background, then install them on the device. For other apps such as games or other misc programs that you run on demand, install them on the storage card.

Thank you. So to further clarify, once an app is loaded and executing it is irrelevant where it loaded from, but the actual initial load will be faster from the device than the storage card and that's where the payoff is?

As far as app loading time is concerned, you won't really notice the difference at all. But like I wrote before, if you have programs like today plugins or task manager, etc., install them on phone memory.

Not quite so simple. All app's once loaded, reside in main memory and it's only the initial load that may be a bit slower.
BUT, some app's have other auxilliary components residing in their directory that they may need to call on from time to time and if on SD card, can slow it down for example GPS apps using maps on SD card. If your map set is small, just try loading your app into main memory storage and see how faster it is.
ALSO, because of poor coding or old app's not expecting to see an SD card, certain app's can fail to work, or crash as they expect to to load from main memory storage.
LASTLY, is the quality of the card. It's the old adage, 'Ya get's what ya' pay for'!
Some cheaper cards have very slow IO buffers that also reduce performance.
Let me ask another question on this (sorry for being lame) - does installing more and more apps (either on card or in the memory) slow down the device? In other words is it better to leave the phone as shipped in order not to increase the size of the reg file?

Fix for USB Mass Storage...

I've recently installed Android to NAND and was looking for a way to mount the sdcard as a usb mass storage device in windows from within Android. I came across an interesting widget on the Android market called "Dual Mount SD Widget":
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-protocol-usb-jBAw.aspx
So I downloaded and installed it to see if it really works... well, IT DOES!
I used voguimg-320x480-17-02-10.nbh and Plemens Android Feb 8th build.
Here's what I did.
1. Download widget. Install. Add to Android desktop.
2. Tap on it. It will say "SD Split"
3. Plug in USB cord to the phone.
4. Notification area says "USB Connected". Don't do anything (ie. Mount it).... Instead, wait about 30secs to a minute.
5. Vista pops up the default actions window for the sdcard. My Computer also lists the sdcard as a removable drive.
I've transferred files back and forth with no problem. Not only that, Astro can see the SD card contents as well at the same time.
Now, the interesting part is that the description for the widget says:
"This widget Modifies a setting that will allow you to mount your SD card to your phone and PC/Radio/ect at the same time."
I'm wondering what setting was modified and if it is possible to build this in so that we don't need to use the widget anymore.

GREAT find! I am testing right now...
EDIT: Works excellent! It doesn't seem to be in the market for me...maybe because qvga, but I found it online.
I'm running:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
ADB Drivers installed by PDANet (not that it affects the SD mount)
Sourceforge 2-14-10 NBH (240x320)
Myn's Warm Donut with Hero theme.
This is awesome!
EDIT2: I can also run ADB/tether with PDANet and use mass storage simultaneously.
This is Fantastic!! It works. Great find man. didnt find it on the market but i did find it on the net. im using version 1.6
EDIT: you should take off the "possible" from your title as it is a perfect fix
Working perfect with Myn's Warm Donut + Windows 7 64 bit. Thanks for the tip!
Definitely works! (Using Ubuntu Karmic)
I was only able to find version 1.0 on the net - couldn't find it on the market.

How do you get it on the phone? Then how do you install it? All I have is a .apk file...what do I do with it? Vista does not recognize my phone, and I do not have a card reader. Thanks.
$1 in market. works great.

Man do us a favor and pl take off "Possible" from the title. This is THE fix.
Could you remind me why it's not possible without this app? is it a kernel or user space issue?
A long time ago, dzo told us that this could be solved when nand boot would be ready. Now, that's ready, what avoid solving this problem?
How fast is USB Mass Storage with the Vogue? Does anyone remember the transfer speeds it's rated for?
I'm using a class 6 MicroSD so I guess the card reader method will still be faster for me?

as I recall the notion was that running from nand would allow us the option of dismounting the sd card from the system so it could be used by USB mass storage. currently, nand still uses a cache on the sd card, so this is not yet possible.
this program allows both the system and the usb mass storage to access the sd card at the same time. I'm sure if someone cared enough to backwards engineer this we could incorporate something similar. however, why bother when there is a perfectly usable program already.
So this won't work using ext2 or fat for haret users I assume?

~500kb write and ~800kb read (with class 4) results may vary

I confirm this also, running fat32 and 2 512Mb ext2 partitions. this is very handy. I found the 1.65 version doing a Google search, and that is what I have tested.
I would love to find out what this widget is doing so we can add the functionality to the base roms. I haven't had a close look at this yet but does anybody know exactly what it's doing?

So correct me if I'm wrong, but it would seem that if your SD card is class 4, this will still be grossly slower than simply taking the card out and using a card reader, no? 800 kb vs 4 mb / sec? or do I have the figures wrong... For small files this is convenient but for large amounts of music files etc it probably is less practical - granted not eveyone has a card reader

Why android dont have drive install choise?

Well I mean... even symbian have an option if you want to install on C or D if you know what I mean. why Android dont have this option when installing new app? why is this so complicated? is there a reason?
The idea is that these are "post-PC" devices. Choosing which drive to put it on is an implementation decision. Post-PC devices try not to have the user worry about implementation and just take care of it. Notice the complete lack of a file explorer in the OS.
In practice this is still a little shaky. Android has allowed you to install apps to an external drive since 2.2, but at the time manufacturers weren't including mass storage chips on the phone, and relied exclusively on SD cards for media storage. The Galaxy S line changed that, and the Optimus 2X takes some cues from that by having a large amount of storage built into the device (the Nexus S doesn't even have external storage). The only place to mount that and have it show up properly when you connect to a PC is /mnt/sdcard/ (/sdcard/ is just a symlink). Some apps are able to recognize when there are multiple mass storage cards available, but most still assume just the SD card.
thanks for answer, its like linux the mnt folder. I hope it gets better
What do you mean hope it gets better?
i guess he means this ^^

SD card... NO Option to use it as INTERNAL storage

Like mention on the title..
bought a Sandisc 128 GB Micro Sd card and there is NO other option other than just " format" ...
i am pretty sure that Android DOES support that feature since MM .....
so does this have to do with Nokia/HMD or am i missing something?

This is most likely due to Google as they instruct manufacturers not to include it (in the ui) in a higher capacity devices (32gb or more).
At least that is what I gathered when I was looking for a way to get nokia 8 to format ext-sd card with a file system that supports over 4gb files.
Most likely you can enable it similarly like they managed to do so with the Samsung galaxy s7, and it didn't even require root access.

i thing there is an option when using a file manager, just like it shows from here
https://fossbytes.com/android-sd-card-internal-storage-adoptable-storage/
Here are the steps to adopt your SD card:
Put the SD card inside your Android phone and wait for it to get detected.
Now, open Settings.
Scroll down and go to the Storage section.
Tap the name of your SD card.
Tap the three vertical dots on the top right corner of the screen.
Tap Storage Settings.
Choose format as internal option.
On next screen, you have the final chance to decide whether you want to change your mind. Tap Erase & Format if you want to format your SD card as internal storage.

Oh, didn't know that... Still i dont have the phone to try it because i'm still waiting for the phone to arrive in Cyprus !
I have added a 32GB SD card into my Nokia 8, and now whenever I restart it, I get the SD card icon in the notification area. It's a small niggle, but anyone know how to stop this happening?
"The message is: Samsung SD card
For transferring photos and media"
I know this though, and I don't need to be told every time I start the phone...
The reason I feel SD card can't be used as internal memo is due to the fact that it cannot be formatted as exfat or NTFS. There's a separate thread on that.

something new?
hello can you help me please someone knows if the method indicated by hinuk works because as far as I require root because the memory encrypts it in EXT4 format

Wish I'd read your post before I wasted £30 on an ad card that will only format as portable. The phone user guide certainly promotes and says it can be formatted as either. What's the point of portable storage I wonder?
Oh, don't you hate it!!
Just bought Nokia 8, only to find I cannot move all my apps to the SD card to free up the internal memory. What a total waste of money, even at 64gb it is still an option I require. Also I was stunned to find that contrary to all the specifications I had read from various sources, I ended up with a single sim version when I wanted a dual sim version. Darn, I think I'll get rid of it and get a phone that does everything I want it to do.... a pox on you Nokia and Google too!!!
Using ADB to get adoptable storage?
I tried using the method shown for getting adoptable storage on the Galaxy s7. I connected to my Nokia 8 using ADB, I found the name of the SD card I'd inserted into my phone, and then I ran "sm partition disk:179,0 private" and received the following error message: "java.lang.IllegalStateException: command '16 volume partition disk:179,0 private' failed with '400 16 Command failed'" I found another post which said that in order to run this command on Android Oreo, I first had to run "sm set-force-adoptable-storage true", however when I tried this, I received the error message: "java.lang.IllegalStateException: Adoptable storage not available on device with native FBE".
Does anyone know if there is a way around this? I haven't been able to find anything else which might allow me to use my Nokia 8 with adoptable storage.

APP access to SD Card

I have an MS-N950U1, stock, running the latest update S2BQL2. Most apps cannot use/have access to SD Card. I tried enabling the "FORCE ALLOW APPS ON EXTERN....." under Developers Options - Please see photo attached, but still, apps have no access to SD Card.
Anyone knows if there is a write fix similar t the one that was available on the Note4/Kitkat?
don't think so, even if you did the app most likely would not work properly unless you knew how to optimise it yourself and it doesn't sound like you do
leave apps on internal memory and keep music/video/pictures on sd card (get a good one)
way less head ache

This has nothing with app optimization. Apps give you the choice of storage location, the problem, external SD doesn't show up. Back in the days, there was a "write fix" to be flashed to give apps access to external storage under kit Kat, I think.

I know it isn't exactly app optimisation but was trying to explain in an easy to understand way that it is not possible like the same way it was back in note 2 and 3 days
There is a way to do it but I haven't tried. Something along the lines of making your SD card "Adaptive Storage". Did some research on it a few months ago and it's honestly more trouble than it's worth. 64gbs isn't enough for some of the apps I would like to keep on my phone but I've managed to just keep it to the bare essentials.
Since Android 6.0, Google has tighten the 3rd party apps freedom or movement
