Life with 1GB - How to live with 1GB RAM and hunger apps (Facebook)? - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I lived with low memory for a long time. Well, not ever. My first Android phone was a LG Optimus One, with Froyo/GB and 512MB. It was much memory (and useless, because the slow ARMv6 processor couldn't deal with it) compared the other low-end phones. The next phones, LG L3, Xperia Tipo, had the same memory size. Then I arrived to Moto G (falcon) times. Great specs (2013) to low-end devices. Revolution!
Three years ago we had JB and KK. Low system memory consumption. Facebook and Facebook Messenger was a single app. Whatsapp was lightweight. And 2GB phones was only for flagships.
Well, we come to today. Facebook alone eat more RAM than ever without Messenger. Whatsapp makes more and more things, and it occupies more memory. And Moto's LP and MM are heavy, much heavy. After some time trying to keep stock firmware, I wipped it and flashed XOSP, things are better, but not as desired.
Then, I ask you: how to live today with 1GB RAM? My Moto G 2014 "freezes" frequently. Multitasking is a dream. And Pokémon Go requires 2GB RAM devices (and crash sometimes because low RAM). Is there a hope? ZRAM? LMK? A lightweight custom ROM? Maybe an custom ROM compiled to optimize code size (using LTO?)?
Sorry by the sad mode. And terrifying english.

Hey,
i tested around with some custom roms, cause i had the same problems with the stock rom.
Finally i'm happy with this Turbo ROM ★ Layers ★ DUI [06/04/16][OFFICIAL] Custom Rom. I also flashed decipher as kernel. (not MPB) and installed greenify donate and l speed with the settings of amol amrit. Just deactivated the zram, cause Pokemon Go runs a bit better.
My G 2 feels like a new middleclass smartphone1!
Sorry bad english!

I'm using Turbo ROM for like 2 months atm and it's almost perfect, but still has some bugs. I was thinking of giving another try to the MM Stock XT1068 but, you know, I'm scared of Motorola devs's work. Should I give it a try or keep with Turbo ROM?

Try it, for me it's working fine, with small debloat

Would you buy one today?

I love the look and build quality of this phone but it's getting on a bit...
Would you buy one? Has it got 12 months of use left?
I'm also bothered by the chip and root problem .
Can it be over clocked?
Thx
PS has 3 updated to jb in the UK?
They have it for £150. It will be the first network locked phone I've bought but I'm on 3 but would have to get 3 screens and bloat out of it.

And, better, snappier in everyday use than the Razr i? I doubt..
Hi
I bought mine a month ago and i would buy it a second time without any doubts.
It has a descend CPU, enough RAM, very good build quality, a good screen, good battery life, it's not to big and not to small
one custom Rom that has no bugs and just works.
The only reason not to buy it is the lack of custom Roms like CM oder MIUI.
greetings

There's no foundation for a "but" here. The RAZR has not just 2GHz but also a fast memory interface. Clock speed is not everything. The "i", with a launcher like Nova, ist fast, snappy and responsive. Overclocking is an oudated concept here. Mine makes more than 14K points with AnTuTu benchmark.
Guys, took delivery this morning and all I can say so far is WOW. No wonder you all seem to like your RAZR I's!!!
Ordered one this afternoon. I coveted this when it first came out but was intent in getting a Nexus 4. Six months later and my longing is surprisingly quite strong and the £149.99 price tag is a lot more amenable. Can't wait for delivery, hopefully tomorrow...

I wouldn't buy a Razr i again. It's a fast phone. A very fast phone. It blows the doors off everything thanks to the x86 Intel processor which is much more efficient than ARM.
My only gripe is that it isn't compatible with Adblock plus or LBE Privacy master. If I would of known those apps didn't work, I would of never bought this phone in the first place.

Don't forget to tell that the "radio" doesn't work.
When I contact Motorola they told me that "no support" bla bla bla "no app" bla bla bla "go to the market".
And I will go to the market... to buy another model
i'll buy it twice.great battery life and really beatiful.
I would buy it again. For the adblock problem,I suggest to adaway. I myself have it in use and it runs fine.

Any ideas why they're not working? What about PDroid?
I'm not sure but I believe that the Intel processor is reasonable for different not working programs. Pdroid need a custom ROM,which currently does not exist for the RAZR i
i would buy it 3 times againg if its needed.. i love the battery, the nice performanxe getting over 14k on antutu benchmark.. nice HT processor, nice ram speed which helps more the processor's HT ... the only thing i would change is the on-call speaker.. i think that it has not the best quality when u put it to max volume

Xposed causing lagginess on X?

I ask this because I had it on my S4 and it actually made it laggier and less responsive, so I don't want to go through the trouble of putting it on the X and having the same issue.

I use xposed with 3-4 modules and haven't noticed any lag or difference in performance..
No problems here.

Lag? On an X? LOL. Good one!

I'm running GravityBox, GoogleOfflineVoice, TriggerIntent, and Android Tuner. No lag here. Never noticed it.
Actually it was the Touchwiz.

It does add some lag. Comparing my X (rooted with Xposed/GravityBox/Moto Tether/Greenify/YouTubeAdAway) to my sister's completely stock X, my phone will encounter a random stutter from time to time. However, I'm a far more intensive user so I have more apps, which are generally more resource intensive as well, open on my phone. Battery life hasn't suffered though.
Cool thanks guys. Decided to go for it and so far so good. Damn this phone is great!
What XPosed and Gravity tweaks are your favorites for Moto X?
Xposed modules: GravityBox, Moto Tether
GravityBox: I use PIE controls (which are limited) and hide the nav bar to give me more screen.

Low RAM

I had this phone since 2011 it came with android 2.1 .the phone should have 512mb of RAM but always shows 312mb. I read somewhere that if I upgrade android it will change to 512mb but it still stayed the same. It was running android 2.3 gingerbread until now. I decided to install a custom ROM this year.I installed CyanogenMod 11 snapshot release. It brought so many new cool features to the phone and made it much easier to use. But the RAM is full. Apps like Facebook and Google+ are using up the RAM. Should I get an older version of CyanogenMod? Like cm10, or cm11? I think that the older versions would use less RAM to run on the phone.

You're always gonna have some RAM used. You can sacrifice your hd recording for more RAM (with another kernel). But unless you really need it, having 200 RAM being used is nothing.
You cant get whole 512MB of installed RAM as free space in this world! android OS itself consumes 40-50% RAM! Some of the exceptional ROMs like SlimROMS consume less amount of RAM. Secondly, You cant expect Apps like Facebook,Google+,Flipboard work like charm on Captivate as they consume more RAM and Cache memory for their benefit. If you want to use those kind of apps, then you should keep closing them whenever not required. You better use Greenify app from the playstore, it hibernates apps when not in use!
Hope it helps! :fingers-crossed: Cheers! :good:
Use any KK rom with NeatKernel 1.09, works great and its very fast in any ROM. I just can't play videos in instagram and sometimes in snapchat but i can live without it. And i deleted some system apps i dont use like native keyboard, calendar, talkback, etc.
The 1st gen SGS devices (including the original Galaxy Tab) only has 384mb of "real" RAM. The rest is for the graphic card. With a bigmem kernel, you can sacrifice HD recording/playback for another 30-40mb.

Lag Problems

Hello

I am actually happy that unlike my old ****ty Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus, my brand new Moto G (2nd Gen) doesn't lag.
I've used GPS and PowerAmp (several times) with flawless performance, also running Next Laugher 3D, a power hungry launcher, with no problems..
Its all about what apps. one is running..some are more compatable with a particular device than others..

"Praise Jah" YOU people.!
My Moto G gets really laggy when charging and using snapchat at the same time. That's pretty much weird. :/
Only thing I have noticed is that when using certain apps and going back to the home screen...sometimes it takes a few (2-5) seconds for my home screen icons to show up. (Use Nova Launcher on every device)
I also have a 2013 moto g, a LG L9, and a cheap BLU phone...all with 1gig of RAM and none of them display this same issue.
My next
Moto G 2014 will be my next smartphone.
(coming from a fake mobilen (i8160 Galaxy Ace 2))
It's got some RAM managing problems I guess. I can't play Clash of Clans while listening to Spotify (music stops) for example.
Or the launcher refresh. I've got an htc one X with the same amount of RAM and that never happened to me. Wish they'll fix it, or that custom roms will.

This. I've got some weird issues as well that I never had with my S3, which also has a gig of RAM. Hope lollipop or any other future update fixes this issue!
You can try to change minfree values as you wish, for example:
Code:
echo "2048,3072,11520,16640,24320,42240" > /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree
I'm quite happy with these values, more multitasking but still not so much lag

You could just give that command from the terminal emulator on your phone but once you reboot you'll lost the configuration.
I made a script for SManager ( you can find it for free on the play store ) in order to run the command at each boot, it's in the attachment.
To configure it open the app, select the script from your storage and toggle "Su" and "Boot" as in the screenshot below. Of course root permissions are needed.
PS: I also managed to enable init.d support in stock rom in order to avoid using another app, but that command is not run ( or something else restores the default configuration after it runs ). Don't know why

Ever since I changed my runtime to ART the hangup and lag have been becoming more of an issue to me. I own both the original and 2014 version of Moto G and I can say the former has a better hold on multitasking with the same exact apps that I have installed on my 2014 version. I'm still giving Motorola the benefit of the doubt though until they push the 5.0 update which I am hoping will bring better experience on the 2014 version.

RAM management with CM13

Guys, who have already flashed cm13 on their device, how is the RAM management.
I know its AOSP RAM management but how much free RAM are you getting on 1st boot?
Also is it able to keep things in memory like games and browser tabs?

I honestly don't know, I've never monitored free memory since using devices with more than or 2GB of memory (Nexus 4).
And I don't think it even matters.

On CM13 here and can keep about 1.5, 1.6gb free. But, multitasking just work! When I was on MIUI every time I must reload the app... Now I can hold apps and some games. I recommend CM
Multitasking work better than miui, you dont need more free ram, as long as system didnt lag, all working fine on cm
