galaxy tab s2 9.7 increase gaming performance - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In some games i get lag spike like gta san anders play on medium seatings and rawensword 2 i use game tuner but not help . how to increase performance for gaming maybe custom kernel or overcloking if its possible for it or some kind programs I'm new in android staff.

If the graphics on the 815 don't work for you then surely don't replace it with an 813/819. The GPU is supposed to be better on the one you have.
I don't think these are gaming tablets really. I don't know any that are but that's not my thing. They do have more RAM and better screens than most other tablets.

any other option ?

Maybe Apple is better for gaming? I really don't know. Hopefully a clueful individual will answer you. I am too new to the whole tablet world to know much.

i find gltools maybe its improve performance i see a lot of video of it . but its need root access? who have experience from it ?

I guess you could change the thread title and perhaps get more help.

bump any suggestion? i need to improve performance for some games not to much a bit game now rawensword runs 20 fps sometime drops to 15 in fights :/ i like to boost to 30 fps any suggestion i try different programs but no luck :/

The issue is simple. The Exynos version throttles like mad with continuous high usage (games and video SW rendering). And you can do nothing about it. From what I read, the snapdragon version doesn't throttle as bad/at all. I recommend switching to android 6 if you haven't done that already, as it increases the performance by a little bit, as well as setting the resolution in those heavier game to 50% and force capping the frame rate to 30.

I've had the exact opposite experience.
The snapdragon version lags with many games while the exynos version played all these games smoothly...

It's certainly peculiar. I couldn't play Asphalt 8 for too long without setting the resolution all the way down to 50%(1024x768). At 1080p it'd start lagging really bad on me in about 3-4 minutes at best. That doesn't mean it doesn't have an adequate overall performance, it's flying, but anything as heavy as asphalt or worse would bring it to its knees.

strange in asphalt 8 i have no lag run rely smoothly only san andres and rawensword run not what great san andres 25~28 medium graphic rawensword 22 in fight with max distance other setting cant change.

For 5.1 I was using optimal rom found in development section. He also made a kernel you could over clock with synapse support found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-s2/development/nn-kernel-lp-t701-t3309570.com With synapse you can force the gpu to over clock along with cpu. Download synapse from market. In setting developer options turn off hardware overlays ticking that on will use the gpu for rendering. Off (default) cpu. At least that is my understanding. Some games work better with it on others off. Minecraft on I got 60fps at 2nd highest view distance using customers textures. Yet terraria would stutter on certain conditions but never a problem with it turned off. Warning though it will make your device hot where the cpu is. I've got no idea how well you're games will play as I have never played them. I did get a noticeable difference from stock vs the above. So maybe it's an option worth trying.

Hm thx for advise but i read all posts but i don't see anything say it's for 6.0 marshmallow and my it's sm-t815 lite version i only see 810? Maybe its work for my device ?

Might be too different. Not sure.

You have mobile data and I just have WiFi. Everything else seemed the same.
On my xoom it was from Verizon I flashed WiFi only rom and kernels. Lost mobile data but all was fine. As long as the kernal matched the rom. Worse case recover backup or Odin MM back on it. Just use the kernel with a 5.1 810 rom plus whatever you need to root it. I used that kernel with a few different romps but never cm since that's liable to be experimental still on my death bed. So it felt compatible with any 810 rom. If I was you and didn't mind losing cellular data I would treat it as an 810. Maybe do a bit more research and make sure they really are similar.

its same i see ok but one question if i flash this kernel how much i can improve performance like gta san andres can i play max at normal frame rate become on max now i have 17~21 fps i ask it become i was thinking its wort or not don't want to lose warranty

If you don't want to lose warranty then stock it is. That's my advise. I highly doubt you would break it but still if you dropped it in get it. You want that available. I've seen root options that don't trip Knox but I didn't care to research because I didn't have a warranty. I knew using ct auto root would void warrenty (method I used) before doing it. Search for different rooting options to 810.
I get not wanting to void warranty but if you're over clocking it, rooting, accept it as a trade off. You replied before I edited my last post so maybe reread. They are slightly different.

um when how about performance in gaming ? there i mention it i read it make 2.0ghz for 4 core and for others 1.5 or 1.6 it make huge boost in game or just small i rely care about it. ?

That sounds right. And the gpu goes up to 700hz. I think stock is 600. I don't play the games you are so can't say for sure performance but it was noticeable for me. I set both cpu min 1,000 max whatever max it allowed like you mentioned. So if it needed cpu it was there. Gpu I did max because there is a noticeable difference going from 600 to 650 to 700. Put the min as the max. Then toggle on turn off hardware overlays. Other games preferred the opposite. Max cpu for both and min close to max, whatever for gpu and no toggle for turn off hardware overlays.
Don't do max cpu and max Gpu. To much heat without any improvement. Pick one or the other as max, other one able to if needed. Here is what I ended up with.
Mine craft liked the first option. Not sure what it was playing at before over clocking. Maybe 30-40 fps while flying in creative mode. Got up to 60 fps no stuttering unless I was at a huge super dense forest biome where you couldn't see the ground. Probably used 25% per hour. I know mine craft doesn't sound like much but I had fancy on (transparent leaves), 128bit textures, 2nd highest view (it was far), and flying really fast in creative. Even bought a controller because of it. Though it actualy plays and feels better without. To wierd.
Terraria preferred all cpu so second option. Again you think but it's 2d. It isn't optimized by any means. Even on pc that game uses more then one would believe. I played at 60 fps with no slowdowns on second option. Without over clock it would stutter fairly easily vs completly smooth. It felt like whoever programed the cpu made sure they never gave enough power at any given time as a cruel joke. With synapse I could set the min as max and over clock it.
All I can say in the end it is noticable. It was enough to get 60fps. For a 2d game, it wasn't worth playing unless it was so. Download terraria dig a bit underground, get some lighting going and some enemies. Notice the wonderful stutter and ask why, it's 2d. Then you can decide if that vs 60 fps is worth the void warrenty and possibly broken device achieving it.

can y try gta san andres on max with overclock your system ? i'm rely curios

No.

[Q] Fully Stock 4.2.2 HTC One gameplay lag!

Hi guys, I'm new to the forums. Sorry if this post is in the wrong section!
I just picked up my HTC One, and I love it. I have noticed though, that gaming seems really off. I realize that the throttle kicks in at 40c but my device still has extremely subpar gameply lag when the device is cool. With no programs running in the background, games like Jetpack Joyride have a frame "jump" ever 3 seconds or so, making it unplayable. Gravity Guy runs at about 10 frames per second, and Final Fantasy III has the same frame "jump" as Jetpack Joyride. Other games I've tried run very choppy / jumpy as well. Again, I am fully stock, and I am willing to root if I can't find a solution elsewhere. Again, no other programs are running. I have turned auto-sync off. I'm on Verizon, so the power-saver mode isn't even there, so it's not turned on. Any suggestions at all will be HIGHLY appreciated! I love this phone...it is wonderful in everyway, but gaming should be buttery smooth.
The only thing I can think of is that a lot of games are optimized to run on one core...
Can rooting fix this problem? Please let me know if you either have the same issue I have, or if you have a possible solution. This is my second HTC One, as the first one had dust under the screen. Both devices had the same issue with gaming.
Thank you so much in advance!
CL
Maybe you should try a custom kernel and try to tweak the cpu governor and gpu governor a bit. For gaming you shouldn't need to overclock the htc one but to force to jump at higher frequencies more often.Go into cpu governor and change up threshold to 65 or lower and maybe you should try the gpu simple governor as well to see if there is any difference. I recommend using a tweak app like trickster mod for this.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to kernels. I am tempted to return the phone and trade it in for a GS4. I shouldn't have to go to this trouble to fix this horrible lag on such a high-end phone. Any ideas? Can someone give me a link to a detailed / easy to follow process on rooting / changing throttle threshold.
I'm not new to flashing etc but i'd advise not to do it with this phone as it avoids your warranty, i'm also about to swap my phone for the 4th time.
Mine lags too on games like asphalt 8, GTA etc.

I'm not gonna swap it in unless i absolutely have to. Why are you swapping for the fourth time by the way?
When taking photos at night the blacks are purple/red.
I've had quality issues with every one i've had, one of them came out the box with the camera lens scratched.

Sorry to hear that. Have you had game lag? I am just wondering if some games are not optimized for the resolution of the HTC One at 1080p...

could be that they are not optimized, some of the games i had on the lowest settings and felt lag. i won't be overclocking this (gets too hot as it is)

Tegra Overclock OUYA Edition is finally here :)

What this app is gonna do?
This will give you some boost that is really required to play games that are demanding on GPU front.
What this app require?
You need to be ROOTed and for that there is a really great app with one touch facility available! The link is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387507
After you get ROOTed just install the Tegra Overclock OUYA EDITION app from attachment and click on OK for one click optimization.
You can also change the actual resolution to somewhat lower to again get a massive boost in GPU intensive games or shall I say those games that scale with GPU clocks very well. (I can confirm nearly 2X boost in RipTideGP2 with all settings maxed out when comparing with 1080p to 720p option provided in the app :laugh
Any kind of hazardous warning before use?
If anything goes wrong then you know where the power switch is! Close the console and cut the power and start again. We have not implemented the on Boot settings for safety reasons...
What about future updates?
I just wish that 4.2.2 gets for the OUYA and that will be a game changer for the console as that support full screen scaling on resolution changing vs screen compensation provided by current android 4.1 version....
NOTE: The app is fully free to use one click solution for OUYA owners and don't require you to get involve in any of cracking stuff Still the app does costs us in development and support front so any kind of donation will be greatly appreciated. If you are planning to buy any Tegra device in future then you can support us by purchasing the original Tegra Overclock app from the market that will in turn benefit you as well..
BTW don't forget to hit the thanks button
EDIT: Version 1.1 Change log
*Nothing new just made the interactive governor as a default rather than performance governor due to heating concern.
*Checked the code so that 2D GPU is set to 520 MHz too, in case it still reports half let me know..
EDIT: Version 1.2 Change Log
***Added requested LBCMT (LastBootCpuMaximumTemperature!) This shows the maximum temperature your device went during last boot.
***Added apply on boot (Works only when the USB device with at least a single file is detected to ensure you don't intentionally mess up anywhere )
The LBCMT will works as soon as you boot once after you open the app for the first time. Also note that YOU SHOULD NOT KILL THE APP manually by task killers or the reporting will be fake. BEWARE....
EDIT: Version 1.3 Change LOG
***Full screen stretched resolution support for CM11 Rom users. Use the special newly added resolution (will only work for CM users currently as no other 4.3 or 4.4 Roms available)
Fixes for temp not showing on custom kernel like EPRJ Kernel.
Thank you for being patient.

On another note, this app rocks. Thank you.

Just Press the OK button and wait a few seconds as the settings getting applied. After that Run your Emulator Games and you should notice a difference . Note that Resolution options also cuts the screen area so use them only if a game is unplayable!
is there no way to allow users to set advanced profiles so that they can configure a medium and max overclock setting?
i saw the temps on my core rise up pretty quickly just from fiddling with the UI, not sure if I want to subject this little guy to that much abuse with no really efficient cooling solution under the hood.

it's understandable for the lil guy to get hot quickly when you are overclocking the GPU+CPU, can't expected to run cool unless you put a better cooling fan into you console, i don't mid my ouya running a lil hot, well mines don't get hot enough cause my ouya got a acrylic custom shell with enough vents and airflow that keeps my console way cooler then the ouya stock/factory shell...
its obvious that it would run hotter if the clock speed is higher. no one is disputing that. i just don't see how not allowing the user to specify speed as much of the other CPU overclocking programs like SetCPU allow the user to do.
It's a needed feature IF it can be supported and implemented.
Excellent!
I'll give this a bash tonight and see what improvements there are!

Actually Temperatures are no problem for this chip as it can bear temperatures of 70 C with great ease as the manufacturer mentioned. Don't worry about that also let me know if they are above this temperature so that we can do something about that. If you ask me I am comfortable with 85C as that is what the throttle temperatures (Default mind you!). Just Relax and crush the games already

The custom CPU clock feature conflict the one click feature and not to mention lower clocks are not required as there is no trouble with the highest speed since the cooling is active and with sink. Just don't worry about the temps too much as everything is normal here and the purpose of console is to bear high temperatures with high load even with little heat management..
I have both the old app and the Ouya specific one and it looks to me that 2D GPU clock is set to 260MHz (1/2 of 3D clock). @Kingshoo, can you tell us what the "one click" settings are (governor, CPU clock, GPU, etc).
Much appreciate the work you've done.

Oh really If its working on Half then I will bump that to full to in next iteration
Settings are nothing but final settings in one click. Meaning Performance governor (Because this one has no polling overhead as opposed to interactive). GPU to 520Mhz, CPU clock to 1.7Ghz (1.6 on all 4 cores as set by OUYA). Ram at 800Mhz and also no throttling on Ram and GPU so that performance is reduced only due to H/W limitation or by bad coding practices and not due to some power saving logics

Cool...thanks! Looking forward to v2
BTW...for reference, I had my governor set to performance for a while and it drove the fan to run almost at all times. To the point I ended up shelling 20 bux to buy the Noctua quiet fan. Maybe others have better luck with the stock fan - but if noise is a concern, I found that the "Interactive" governor scales pretty fast with no visible impact on performance vs "Performance".
My 2 cents.
After reading several reviews about Noctua 40x10mm A-Series Blades with AAO Frame, SSO2 Bearing Premium Retail Cooling Fan NF-A4x10, I decided to buy it. I replaced the noisy fan of my OUYA, and the difference in sound is amazing. I had to check if the fan was actually running because barely hear it. Also, the temperature of my equipment dropped ~ 10°C, so overheating issues could be easily fixed, if you decided to overclock. I recommend this product without a doubt. Check on eBay or Amazon.
If you want to replace the fan, here's a guide how to do it. youtube . com /watch?v=rra0FwlHvBA
Well honestly I wasn't able to play games on OUYA but since you people are playing games what the temps of CPU are anyways after say an hour? I am asking this because I don't see a need for custom coolers as 50C or 70C it really don't make any difference to your hardware. Yes the fan noise may be concerning to many but I have cotton plugs in my ears to keep it silent (these really costs cents and not $$!). OK so newer version will have interactive on one click..
My stock fan is totally silent anyway

Possible solution for choppy gameplay

After much experimentation with GLTools, Xposed settings (Disabling DVFS) etc.. what I have discovered for a few games (Vendetta Online for example) is that it is not the GPU that is causing the poor framerate, as many reviews would have us believe. Instead it is the dynamic CPU throttling.
If you are rooted use a tool such as SetCPU or Exynos Overclock to keep the CPU at 1900 and notice the difference! SetCPU will allow settings per App.
Richard
Can you confirm this? I love this tablet but yes, gameplay can be choppy sometimes. I'm hesitant to root it since I still have 25+ days left of my return period.

I have confirmed this with Vendetta Online (a very graphics intense game) and it was the magic solution. You have to remember that the real problem is that this is new hardware and the current games haven't "yet" been optimized for this device. It isn't that device sucks, it's that it's on the bleeding edge.
Also, honestly it takes a minute to root and unroot and very few businesses are checking the trip counter at the return desk
Is there a game that you know sucks that I can test for you with this method?

I'm glad to hear this - I thought that the Exynos in this tablet had some sort of an issue (even considered shelling out $100 extra for the Qualcomm version).
I have rooted and installed SetCPU and changed the governor to "ondemand". I'll test some games and see if just changing the governor helps, otherwise I'll set the CPU to 1.9GHz for those games.

Simply changing the Governor doesn't work (at least on the stuff I have tried). You need to force the minimum to 1900.
There is a great app called "Per App Modes" That allows you to set CPU speeds per app. SetCPU supposedly does this with profiles, but it doesn't always recognize that the app is running.
Thanks again. Yes, I used the profiles in SetCPU that made no difference. However, the "Per App Modes" seems to make a significant difference, although the game still lags - at least somehow. However, I think this game is just poorly coded - its reviews on the Play market are piss poor (2 stars average). The game is Haegemonia
Actually the real cause of the laggy performance is that Samsung disabled HMP/GTS on this Tab.
That means only one cpu cluster can be active at a time, either the Quad A7 or Quad A15.
With HMP, the the tablet is able to use any combination of A7 and A15 cores simultaneously to balance performance and power.
Thats very low of Samsung because they marketed the Exynos 5420 as a true octacore.
What you did here is basically force the Tablet to use only the A15 cores, so good performance but bad battery.

Xiaomi must optimize the 660 chip.

i bought this phone last week, i am not satisfied with this phone, it gets hot when browsing, lag when playing games(because of the unstable high speed clock), i checked using the aida64 app and the big cores clock speed easily reach 2.2 ghz speed. that was unnecessary, even after turning the battery saver mode, the cores still easily touch 2.2 ghz. i already discussed this on the indonesian mi community, but then i got bullied, people saying it was my fault, not the phone. but there was many thread that complains about lag when playing games and bad battery life. i supose that was because the bad management of cpu cores.
note : i bought this phone in indonesia, with TAM (official) warranty
my rom is currently on the 10.3.6.0(PFGMIXM)

It's very commom for any Snapdragon device to reach top clock speed when in use, download CPU-z and do a little scrolling to see that.
The lag in games you're getting is most probably because of the 3GB RAM of your variant not the CPU as SD660 can handle most mobile games with ease.
About battery life, how much SOT are you getting? RN7 should handle at least 6hrs with some heavy gaming included.
And about temperature, how much degrees is your device peaking at? Anything below 38ºC should be fine.
And lastly, about mi community......well, most people there look like VERY inexperienced users, i wouldn't take them as a parameter to prove your point.

3gb of ram is good enough for gaming unless ur playing a heavy game while on youtube and facebook at the same time. the problem with this phone is the aggressive thermal throttling, once the phone reaches 40°c the phone becomes noticeably slower.

3GB of RAM has not been fine for some time now, there is a lot of games you wouldn't be able to multitask with any other application with only 3GB.
Few examples: TES Blades, Fortnite, PS2 emulation.
Also what are you doing to reach 40° on your device? As for mine never passed 38° and I live in a hot country(Brazil).
I Agree with installing a custom Kernel to improve your performance overall, but right know the best optimized ROM is still MIUI as many threads here suggest.

thats my point, 3gb is enough for games as long as you dont multi task. and this phone is mid range.
im in Philippines, room temperature here is about 37° heavy games like pubg makes my phone temperature skyrocket reaching up to 45° especially with thermal mod.
btw MIUI has the worst ram management for this phone. its closing background apps like no tomorrow, but on any custom rom its actually quite decent.

i bought this phone last week, i am not satisfied with this phone, it gets hot when browsing, lag when playing games(because of the unstable high speed clock), i checked using the aida64 app and the big cores clock speed easily reach 2.2 ghz speed. that was unnecessary, even after turning the battery saver mode, the cores still easily touch 2.2 ghz. i already discussed this on the indonesian mi community, but then i got bullied, people saying it was my fault, not the phone. but there was many thread that complains about lag when playing games and bad battery life. i supose that was because the bad management of cpu cores.
note : i bought this phone in indonesia, with TAM (official) warranty
my rom is currently on the 10.3.6.0(PFGMIXM)

Just Dont bother the hardcore mi fans, especially indonesian mi fans, i know they are jackass sometimes (well Not all of them)
Yes the firmware is really not optimize, battery usage is really inconsistent (typical not optimize firmware)
All we can do is wait for the new OTA.
Strangely the PRO variant get more updated frequently (check official mi website)
But for us indonesian, we are stuck with NON PRO version if we want to use Official waranty hardware.
Good luck

Thanks for all your reply, i apreciated it. probably i will wait until miui 11 released, and if the phone still gets hot i will install custom rom and use EX kernel manager to disable input boost and limit the cpu.

not true .. i've been using PE (and revolutionX) and Havoc since mai.
After being on EvolutionX for more than a month, i switched to MIUI EU (coz i missed it) but then went back to trying havoc .. 2 weeks now ZERO problems no heat/lag whatsoever

ever try miui.eu or masik?
these are very stable, miui-based custom ROMs with zero bloatware and better RAM management.
still a better ROM for people who want better performance / battery life on their xiaomi devices, but too afraid to live on the edge with AOSP ROMs.
AFAIK, that's called thermal-throttle/ing. When RN7 reach its peak performance and certain heat, to prevent overheat normally our device will slowing down its performance and it caused lags and fps drop for sure
I also encounter this problem when playing pubg even with smooth-ultra setting

and thermal throttling can be disabled by using a certain magisk module. although not recommended when ur playing for long period of time. i play max 3hrs highest temperature reached 45°c.

It happened to me, custom roms aren't good for gaming then switched back to MIUI, when I play phone gets 45 C max, my battery gives 6 hours of straight online gaming, I'm on MIUI Global 10.3.5, Evira kernel 3.8.
:good:
660 wasn't designed for battery efficiency. Still waiting for Franco Kernel, it might fix the issue. My Redmi Note 4x can last up to 10hrs SOT while my Redmi Note 7 can only reach 5hrs even with custom ROM+greenify installed.

Nope. With moderate use I barely get 7, mostly 6. I got this sot by using apps like line, wa, instagram, youtube, browsing, downloading tons of file and one match playing pubg and pes.
I reach 8 to 9 hours sot only if i using wifi and playing videos constantly, minimum social media and no gaming.
Ofc people used their phone different each others. But, im sure they are having same battery drain. People talk about this so many times and everywhere. Ur case having 10+ sot like only happen 1:10 of all lavender users.

Its true continuous gaming on this phone (with stock miui) is bad. You will get smooth gameplay only in short term, like a one match pubg. Then it will start to lag because of heat. We need to keep the phone temp as cool as possible when used for gaming to get less frame drop. Example, playing close to a fan or inside a room with air conditioner on.

Yes, thermal throttle where the main reason. Its limit cpu whenever temp -read by system- reach 43/44 degree. A temp read by system are mostly not indicate the real temp. Besides, we have clockspeed max at 2.2Ghz, making our phone faster to heats up easilly. Thats why thermal throttling the cpu in such early time. (Its ruins gameplay, isnt it? :v)
If we look inside thermal-engine.conf on lavender, it use two sensor for detection and two step for throttling the cpu. First step it will limit clockspeed by 1,5Ghz and 1,9Ghz. Second step it will limit clockspeed by 1,1Ghz and 1,4Ghz. Because the temp gap between these step are only 1°, so mostly thermal-engine will going to limit clockspeed by 1,1Ghz and 1,4Ghz. Imagine play pubg with that clockspeed, lags and frame drop will occurs oftenly.
I've seen Mi 8 Lite with the same chipset playing pubg continously without any frame drop. I took its thermal-engine configuration and compare them with lavender.
Interestingly there are specified profiles for gaming and pubg are missing on lavender. Thus, both thermal-engine are really different. A same chipset should having same thermal at least. But, this show us that lavender thermal thingy are not being optimized yet while mi8 lite does already.

Question Galaxy Tab S8 lagging in games compared to Tab S7

Hello
I have upgraded my Tab S7 to Tab S8. And I have expected new device be much faster and smoother, but what I found that games are really lagging! It was perfectly smooth on S7 but not on S8. Game mode does not help much. I do not play a log of games on this tablet as I used it mostly for developement, but I do play Harry Potter Puzzle and Spells and this game lags pretty bad on S8.
What can be done to fix it or should I wait for Samsung to release update? I do know about Samsung's throttling on S8 devices but I never expect it to be that bad.
And in addition (don't want to open another thread) it seems that S8 has more aggressive memory settings because it unloads apps from memory over time. Which never happened on S7. S8 has more memory and I think it should keep more opened apps, not reloading them. And yes, settings in developer section (do not keep activities) is not enabled

This has to do to android 12, s7 was only on android 11, but also is on 12 now. So then it automatically puts apps into deep sleep. You can remove that under battery settings area and remove apps from deep sleep mode.
About lagging it might be new game mode from samsung since apparently samsung did on purpose limit hardware but added a settings into app that let's you gain more performance in games. Should be in game engine or w.e name is and then settings and then Labs and enable experimental feature there that should boost performance and stop limit the hardware for game.
When I replaces S7 it was already on Android 12 but I never observed such behavior. Anyway, I have put game into never sleep list. As about lags, unfortunately I found no options for that

I was noticing this particular with emulation since I don't play many native android games. When playing Sonic Colors at native res on my Tab S7+, it would almost never go below 30fps in level, and almost never below 60fps in the hub and menus. However, when I tried doing the same on the S8+, I had a bunch of stuttering and performance issues no matter what version of dolphin I used. There was a workaround to this (at least for me). These issues only happened when I restored my data to my new S8+ with Smart Switch, but when I just put all my data and stuff on there manually, the issues seemingly stopped happening. The only game I throttle in is Fortnite, which didn't have the 90fps option even though the S7+ did. The game still didn't feel much different before and after the throttle, still pretty consistent framerates overall.
Edit: Just fixing typos.

Did you used cloud backup or restored through cable or it's the same thing? I have similar problem, but with benchmark results. My device can't get even average model score in 3DMark (about 2 to 8%). Geekbench scores are worse than snapdragon 865 devices. I don't know what's going on. I already tried to reflash stock rom with odin, but that didn't help. Hopefully not using cloud backup will help.

I initially restored with a cable, but once I started getting shawty performance, I made a backup on my sd card and restored it from there with Smart Switch. I never used cloud backup since that takes a lot of time for me. After getting suboptimal results with both, I just bit the bullet and slowly started adding everything and getting it to how it was on my old devices. Only then did I get getting substatiall better results. Now I can run a lot of Wii/GC/3DS/PS2 games at 1.5x, 2x, and sometimes even 3x without getting throttled. Not sure why using smart switch tanked my performance, but all I know is that it's not tanking now.
Thats interesting. Because I also moved data using cable. I do not know how good is cloud since I never did it before (only on Apple devices).
I might try to fully format tablet and test it again.
Will provide more information later

I tried formatting few days ago, and that didn't help. At least for me this problem is not related to Smart Switch. Do you also have bad benchmark scores? I understand that benchmarks are not very good indicator of performance (especially due to GOS), but I expect to have at least average SD8gen1 performance, not the level of SD855.
Did reset to factory settings. It is much better at least for now. Benchmark - tested only Geekbench 5. Result the same
Hi.. I'm experiencing the same problem here.. any updates regarding this problem? My geekbench score can't even surpass an exynos 2100.. it only achieve around 700ish on single core.. the first time I notice this is when I tried playing granturismo with aethersx2.. and it can't even handle the 1x reso.. hhhh.. really frustrated here.. please kindly share any clues regarding this topic thanks in advance.. sorry not a native English speaker
I had same problem, but, i solved using this:
ADB AppControl 1.7.5
(disable all game service (i'm not remember how many)). For me it's work great
--edit
i disabled bixdy and others apps too
First.. thank you for the answer! Might try it out later..
So it's like disabling the "GOS" right? Is it different from the "alternate game performance" option in game booster? They said it's the "official" way to disable the GOS.. but yeah I didn't find any difference after enabling that option though... Hmm..
Hmm...also.. What makes me wonder is.. I saw some reviewers review this device without any tweaking needed and they could achieve a 8gen1'ish results in benchmarks.. and also if you know ETA prime on YouTube.. he reviewed a tab s8 ultra and is able to run a granturismo 4 with aethersx2 (ps2 emulator) in 3x reso in default settings with no problems... I know it's a different device but it's supposed to have a same Chip right?
All of this things makes me frustrated because it was not what i expected from a 8gen1 device.. moreover I saw a sd870 device could run the granturismo 4 in the same settings with no problems.. it really broke my heart..
The issue mainly lies in the SOC.
Even though, SD8 Gen 1 has a much higher peak performance, especially in GPU, it can't sustain that performance due to excesive power consumption which results in thermal throttling.
GOS is another thing that affects the whole experience, it's limiting the performance of the device.

Yeah.. I think this is mainly what cause the problem.. The 8gen1 itself..
a quick update regarding this from me..
I've done some re-test in benchmark and real game perfomance but this time im doing it in a well conditioned (cooled) room..
previously I was doing the test and gaming and in a room without any Air Conditioner and I lived in a tropical country which is really hot and humid...
the benchmark results (3d wildlife) came out Nice in a well cooled room, It scores what most of Tab S8 would score and the real life perfomance (PS2 emulator) is also improved..
it manages to handle GranTurismo 4 in aethersx2 with 3x reso on safe setting quite well..
the CPU temperature is well managed in around 35'ish Celcius compared to 45'ish when not using any air conditioner...

CPU temperature 35 Celsius degrees? Are you talking about an ABSOLUTE idle? Because even if you would put a bag of ice on the TAB it wouldn't sit that low under usage. Even small loads will put the CPU around 50-60 Celsius degrees. Under heavy load up to 85-90 till the thermal throttle hits in.
Also, that ONE wildlife mark test doesn't do much. The idea is stability, better known as SUSTAINED performance, and that's where SD8 Gen 1 ****s itself. Try running a Wildlife standard stress test (20-minute loop) and post the screenshot, you'll see what I mean.

I only saw the perf-z indicator from samsung though.. so yeah.. i know i might just straight up wrong about this I just straight saying what I saw.. and honestly I'm not an expert in this.. just a mere consumer..
Yeah I got you.. it goes downhill even after the first one.. what I'm trying to say was that I never reach that score before in warm room so yeah it's mainly the CPU problem..
What mainly being my concern before was I'm scared that I got scammed with a fake/unoriginal/refurbished tab s8.....
Harry Potter plays fluently on Tab S8 Plus here.
I have sent my S8 to my mom and bought S8 plus. Did not restore, set it up from scratch. No lagging in games, including HP. So, it could be related to thermal soliton in S8 plus as it is bigger

Yes you have to run 4 adb Commands that also disables game booster and game launcher then GOS will stay disabled even after restart. I've done this and turn ram plus off. I also disabled or put into deep sleep all of the bs apps. I also went to advance features and turned off all of everything causes I don't use the s-pen so no need for air actions and stuff to be on. If you want the ADB commands let me know.
