Qi Wireless Charger Receiver/Plate

I wish someone would come up with something like this that would make the Xperia Z Qi compatible...
So far they have it for the S3 and Note 2.
Just slot it in behind your battery and you are set for Qi wireless charging...
For us, it would have to be hidden behind in an external case though...
If only someone could come up with something like that for the Xperia Z, utilizing the dock connector ports and we can have wireless charging too!
The problem with the current Sony dock is that it is too tight fitting for most cases.

No where does it say how much power they put out, most of the Qi coils seem to be about 600ma which is a bit slow

so, isn't there any Qi charger without case? I mean, I'd like to have my own one... never liked cases with covers and sh*t

I will check the polarity of both Xperia Z and Note 2 charging pins tonight when I get home. The spacing on both sets of pins is very close, if polarity is not switched around this means you should be able to use a Note 2 Qi pad under a case of your choice, provided you take some of the bulk off the contacts on the Qi pad itself.
Do NOT attempt to hook one up (if you have one), without checking the polarity first. You may short your phone and kill it.

Looking at that Wurth transmitter, I see a coil, with two leads coming off of that. My DIY electronics knowledge tells me that's positive and negative. However: for that coil to work, does one have to have a control circuit of some sort? Because, I mean, if I can modify a MicroUSB cable to plug directly into that (the two leads), I'll wire these things up everywhere...

I've actually done this already, using a qi receiver for note 2 and it works great. I hide the receiver tag between the phone and the hard case I use.
will probably start a thread to share some photos and tips later.

Great mod, very interested in doing this! Have you encounter any problems are doing this? And what did you use to raise the point in the wireless card?

The receiver was a little expensive, as I thought it came with a charger plate.
I'll try and get some pics up later, but basically I've just hidden the receiver under my Casemate Tough case, and fitted the pins onto the charging dock connector on the side.
I filed down the pins so they would fit into the recess on the phone, but they aren't quite long enough to touch the brass contacts on the phone, so I've wedged a bit of stiff card down the side of the case over the pins to force them to keep touching the connector. I suppose someone who is good with a soldering iron could make the pins on the receiver longer so they touch the phone connectors when the case is on.
It's far from perfect at the moment, but as a bit of a hack and slash job, it works fine. The receiver is only rated at 500mah, which is a lot less than the Sony charger, so we'll see how quickly it can charge the phone.

I'd be curious to hear your experience, I wonder how thick or fragile it is. I'd buy one to test but I am not in the US and would have to import it.

I ordered one a week or two ago. One of my wireless charging pads (which I didn't have any of, so I had to order a couple) arrived yesterday, but still waiting for the receiver coil. Hopefully any day now.
Edit: bah, I forgot, it's being shipped from HK; it'll be a while yet (the pads came from the US).

Awesome, I look foward to hearing your thoughts on it when you get it

They are pretty thin. I've never use one quite like that, but I used the external pads for the Note 2 that I retro fitted into my old Verizon Galaxy Nexus... and it worked extremely well.
I ended up hooking it up to the POGO pins and taping it onto the battery I had to do a little case modding to make it all fit in a normal Incipio Feather case (basically cut a back plate in half, but I had like 5 of them).
So it works really well. The problem I see here though is you are eating up the USB port all the time. With the thin profile cable, I wouldn't attempt to unplug it many times. Just leave it and forget it. Fortunately the G2 has a great battery. My Verizon G2 has this built in, and I Qi Wireless Charge every night.
The Coils are thin, but thick enough to forbid the use of a thin case like a Incipio Feather. If you use this, you are best off using a TPU case that is flexible.

player911 has nailed the situation. My plan is to 'switch over' entirely to wireless charging for the most part, and wifi file transfers -- I don't want to be unplugging/plugging the usb connector in at all. I figure one more charging pad (total 3) should do it... 1 at work, 2 at home kinda thing.
The eBay version of the amazon listing linked seems to suggest it will come with a case (the one pictured). I can't imagine why I would be asked to pick a colour otherwise black or white, when ordering. Yet both listings state "1 piece", so who knows. Will report what I end up with when it arrives. My S3 had the pogo pins so that you could use wireless or usb for charging but I never went that route at the time. The use of the usb port on the G2 did give me pause but I'm going to give it a go.

I would give it a go too. Perhaps temporarily until a internal solution pops up (bound to happen). Even if it doesn't come with a case, TPU cases are a dime a dozen.

How thick is the coil? Do you think it is possible to fit it under the back cover? Because I'm planning to do that and run the cable through a hole I want to cut in the back cover so that I can plug it in the usb connector.

Eh that isn't too bad. Looks fine IMO. Besides you don't really need to use the USB port with the Wireless Storage option (awesome feature) and Qi Charging.
So if the port is unused, the also acts like a port saver to keep dirt and lent out.
If you feel lucky and want to further reduce thickness, you can open that package up and remove just the coil. The packaging is basically a thick plastic sticky back that is folded over. Removing the outer plastic housing will cut down 1-2mm. Inside the hard plastic cover, there is the actual coil that is in a black square sticker. The Coil itself is round. On mine, I removed the outer shell and trimmed the unused outside area around the coil. Creates a smaller footprint and gets even thinner.
My goal with my Galaxy Nexus was to fit it in a hard Incipio Feather Slim Case. As it is, any TPU case should work though.

it is thin, but I don't if there is enough space under the backcover, I've never removed it.
I'm still testing it, if my readings are correct it is charging the G2 with at least 400 mA.
Now I've moved it to check how much does the positioning matter.

I've charged it from 50% to 100% using this stuff, it was charging with ~450 mA

Qi is a slow charge. I use mine for my desk and nighttime charging.

400-450 mA charging current.

I've ordered two different kinds, one is the same as Wizard7 that purports 500 mA output and the other purports 750 mA output. I've received neither one yet although according to tracking, the 750 mA one is finally slated for delivery today. But it has a longer cable that I'll figure out how to fold or contend with.
While I fully expected qi charging to be slower, I have to admit I hoped it would be faster than PC USB at least. It would have been a decent solution if I didn't "lose" use of the usb ports but I guess as long as it charges overnight, I can't complain.

Sooo which qi chargers do you guys recommend?

How does magnetic charging work?

I have never used anything but USB charging, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to wear out the flap/door over the USB port.
Does this use a pad? It looks like there's a recess in the side of the phone. Does the charging connector just snuggle up to that?
I'm assuming I could buy a charger from T-Mobile or Sony. Or maybe the connector for this is some kind of industry standard?

Nice one, I was always led to believe if you wanted a proper Sony one you had to buy their whole dock, so I don't know if its genuine or not, although the packaging looked good so maybe it is.

I also ordered 3 of (what appears to be) the same cable from the dx-box.com website and find they are of good quality.
I initially ordered one, liked it and then ordered 2 more - home, work and car!
PS I am using mine with Z1 compact...

Is the magnetic charger cables are all same for z1,z2,z1c and z3c. Wanna buy cable so the flqps wont be loose coz it needs to open every charge.

btw, i had the Sony Dock for the Z1 and my Z3Compact fits into it just fine when i use the 2nd/alternative insert they included. saved me from having to buy a new one
that model was the DK31. I just used the dock adapter for the Z1 w/case and my Z3C fits like a charm (without a case on it of course)

Yes it might be worth while seeing which of the older docks are available, they may be cheaper than the most newest and as the older phones tend to be a bit thicker its possible that your new phone with a case on will fit on an older dock ok (my DK48 had to have all the inserts removed and a small piece of foam padding in to allow it to be used with a cased phone)

It's waterproof just like the headphone jack and it's simple contacts, no induction. So it's not "magnetic charging", it's just a proprietary connector held in place by a magnet. It's originally simply meant to place the device on the dock, Sony never sold a cable or adapter on its own.

Yes. it does supports charging without opening any flaps on the waterproof devices. Only this connector have only power connector and no data

Yeah - seems like the magnet just holds the plug flush against the devices connector pins, as the plug doesn't physically 'snap in'.
While its useful not having remove the flap/loosen it over time, i'm not a big fan. When im about to sleep and there isnt alot of light, i find the cable very hard to place correctly. It only connects one way and you have to be pretty precise to get both pins to line up. Granted this is with aftermarket cables (3 different companies) and a ringake case.
I wish it was more like the MS surface tablet plug, where the magnet lines up the connector and causes it to 'snap in' very easily. Obviously I dont know if waterproof limitations make this connector type impossible.

I found the magnector X202 to snap in very easily. it has a strong magnet and its asymmetrical construction prevents putting it on the wrong way around, preventing any possible short circuits. i can put it on blindly. i also had a second magnetic charger which i send back exactly because of the issues that you are describing. the alignement was just too much of a hassle. only problem is it is quite big and may not clear all the cases. though they released newer versions which
are not cables but adapters, which may work better with the clearance of the case (x203 version 2 i think just got available).
If your case allows this cable i would really consider buying it, its a bit on the more expensive site but its high quality and saves you a lot of fumbling around. also it is only 1m long but just buy an usb extension cable then your good for everything.

Supposedly Sony is going to do away with magnetic charging in the Z4 and use a waterproof micro-USB, which would be very welcome (fewer proprietary accessories and one less hole in cases). Until then, I use a mag cable with my Z3c and have tried a few of the Ebay cheapies. They work, but do not stay on very well despite having fairly strong magnets (they're not stable laterally) and can be fiddly to line up when connecting so I only use them at my desk or other places where the phone will just sit on a flat surface relatively undisturbed while charging. In the car I use a Magnector X2 cable, which is better designed with contours that match the side of the phone, making it far more stable and easy to snap on. But the Magnector cable is $18, which is silly money for a charging cable and why I can't wait for Sony to do away with the whole magnetic thing altogether.

I got this amazing cable from Amazon and its working great with Quick Charge 2.0 Chargers. The micro USB connector can also act as Dust plug. So its prevent wear and tear on the Micro USB port.

I backed it. Gonna be well worth it. Like it better than one in op. If you read there whole kickstarter they are well above and beyond and still going. I see this going huge.

I purchased 2 similar magnetic cables by WSKEN on Amazon...$14.99 each. Looks like they are made from the same manufactures but under different names.
The micro attachment is very tight and keeps flush with the bottom of the LG G4...the magnet cable is similar to Apples magnetic charging cables. If you didn't know, you would think it was made by Apple.
I haven't got the chance to test them out since I just received them today, but so far so good.
They need to design different types of attachments, so a single magnetic cable can be utilized with several different charger types.
Overall, I think this was a good idea and should be better than a plain USB to micro cable.

Kickstarter Znapz have that type you mentioned. But I can't wait for them to materialize. Never trust these kickstarters bull.
I get use to these cables and i got 2 of it with 4 Micro USB connectors. I don't really uses Qi Charging that much anymore and besides it support Quick Charge 2.0.

I wasn't referring to the "kickstarter" version, but the same ones you bought.
Same exact packaging , just under a different name.
I'm using both of mine...one for the car and the other for my workplace.
I prefer this over Qi charging...I was thinking of ordering the Qi chip sticker and a Qi charger to test out, but so much unreliability regarding this method.
How was your experience with Qi charging?

You can forget about Qi Charging honestly. Its created so much heat these day with this hot summer. And once its run hot the G4 couldn't charge efficiently. And now I suspected even if my Qi stickers are defected.

Great information to know.
I'll stick with the traditional method and with these magnetic USB charging cables, it will make it a bit easier.

I am using this on a Dock and its wireless charging with QC 2.0.

This has the potential to replace wireless charging. Sony has been doing it for years.
Best is that it is so easy to retrofit any device
The problem with the stickers i've noticed when it came out for samsungs a year ago is that NFC does not work properly. So they make the sticker with thinner wires. Now NFC works but then the problem is it takes longer to wirelessly charge than with thicker wires. Next. you have to find a proper charger and depending on the device, if the vendor did not make it you will be lucky to get it working.
Too much hassle....
With the dual sim G4, there is no possiblity for wireless charging at all since the two pins are not even there, i don't think i will miss wireless charging.

I'm not using wireless charging. I've got the suspicion that wireless charger (due to excessive heat) has spoilt the battery in my G3 and my S4

My question is:
Does this have any fitment issues with cases or will most cases with a large enough cutout work with these?
If anyone who has these could post the dimensions in LxWxH (in millimeters) I would greatly appreciate it.

That looks really tight. I'm using Unicorn Beetle Supcase and it measure 1.4 cm exactly.
EDIT: Found that the cable part may require up to 16.6mm (1.66 cm)

Samsung Wireless Fast Charger Teardown + Platinum Qualcomm 2.0 Fast Car Charger

The back story ->
I have an old Nokia Wireless Charging Car Dock and love it. SO much so that I made it work with my sammy devices using a heat gun to bend some of the plastic. Coming into the new devices and wireless standards, I wanted to keep with the same trend and update/ upgrade. Got ahold of the Samsung Wireless charger and had no reason to upgrade the nokia since the charging was the same. In comes the Samsung Wireless Fast Charger and wanting it in the truck. So, I went to work on a teardown of all my gear (again) and here is the insides for you folks. I included the Platinum 12v Car Qualcomm Fast Charger 2.0 since it is what I am using in there with it.
I have a Note5 and an S6 Edge+ so I can verify it IS faster.

HOW TO TEARDOWN -
Using a regular + screwdriver, you can move the rubber on both sides of the rubber on the bottom of the charger. There are just 2 screws there.
Once they are unscrewed, flip over the charger and turn the top part of the charger counter clockwise. It should then lift right off.
Now that the top is removed, there are 5 screws holding the middle section to the base. Remove them.
Base should now easily lift away from the middle section.
Flip over the middle section and you have an additional 5 screws to remove.
Now to fully remove the electronics from the unit. You would need a Heat Gun and a Soldering iron if you planned on keeping it in a warrantable state. Otherwise, just use a heat gun and a pair of wire cutters.
I used the heat gun to remove the coil from the frame as well as the ribbon cable LED daughter board. Then using the cutters, cut the section where the LED was out as to not have desolder the coil.
DONE.
As for the car charger, I used a knife and some pressure on the seams. "POP' in 4 places and I was done. Desoldered the 2 grounds and 1 positive. Soldered up some red and black 14gauge lead wires and I am off to install in the truck.
I didn't put the Nokia modification up since I doubt there is any interest. Basically I gutted it, Used a heat gun and bent the arms in a manner that would hold my devices and allow for the thicker electronics. Then used some moldable plastic (polymorph) to make a BASE for the electronics to screw into / secure it. I had already added a Ram Ball mount to it so reassembly and plugging it back in were all that was needed. - Overly simplified explanation -

Check the 3rd post. I just 'dumped' the pictures here and will reorganize later.

The 12v charger and the 120v charger have the same output specs with the exception of the 12v output on the car charger. Have had this setup working for over a week now without fail or issue/. The second one is for a 'STEALTH' install on a piece of vehicle trim. When I am navigating, or using Torque app, I keep the device in the Car dock under the rearview. Just driving around, I set it behind my shifter where I put another charging pad under it. Just waiting for my Micro Suction tape to use as a pad so it doesn't move around.

Great pics, sounds like something id do but my Grand Cherokee has nowhere "extra" i could place my ohone onto a hidden qi charger.
You know they make much smaller dash cams right? (Sorry, had to).

I know with the dash cam. It is multi purpose. I like for people to know they are being video'd, especially LEO. then I remove it and use it for other activities.

Thank you for posting this! It inspired me to try taking my wireless charger apart and intergrating it into my car.
Unfortunately I only had the "regular" (non-fast) Samsung wireless charger for my Note 5 and didn't get very far. When I removed the silicone and stickers on the back and front, I couldn't find any screws!
I think I saw the regular Samsung wireless charger in one of your pictures, have you tried taking it apart and do you have any tips?

Not joking here. I just sold that unit yesterday. Have you tried looking in that single cylindrical hole on the bottom? Or try holding the unit in between both hands and turning opposite directions?

Wow, talk about bad timing. Thanks for the suggestions.
I checked the small hole in the bottom, and there is no screw there either, just a nice view of the board beneath.
I also tried twisting the unit in opposite directions and nothing seems to move. I could try putting it in a vise but it was already difficult to grasp the bottom to twist, I'm not sure if I'd be able to get any more leverage.
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you get for the regular wireless charger? I've been thinking how nice it would be to have the fast charging version anyway, now there might be an additional benefit of being able to open it easily.

Sold it to a buddy for 20, he wanted a fast charger too so I sold that to him for 25 and a cable. ~$45 and a handshake.
I got a deal from a retailer that was hesitant on getting them in stock. I put in on 4 of them and paid less than $100USD for them all combined.
If your device supports the fast charging wirelessly, I would recommend in the investment. Check amazon, bestbuy, and all the normal big box places for "black friday/cyber monday" weekend deals.
Worst case with your current one, pry it open or use a dremmel.

THOUGHT on the vise. Put it horizontal instead of vertical. That way the cylindrical disk will split as you tighten it. All the internals should be fine. Or do it in that manner to gain access to a spot where a flat head will have purchase for prying.

You can buy raw charging boards without a case on amazon for like 12 bucks.

The LEDs are driving me crazy at night. Just fixed the Fast charger thanks to this thread, but the regular one is resisting haha

If it's the newer pad, you do twist to open. I took apart for the same reason. I have a S7 Edge and no point in using a fast charger on my night stand.
The top twist counter clockwise. Attached is a photo with the notch.
Once open, there are 4 screws on the inside and then the bottom comes off.
There are 2 bulbs and access is not great but you can get to them and eliminate or black out.
If you have any other questions, let me know. I have the newer pad, the newer fast charge pad and the new fast charging stand.
