Phone Upgrade - Huawei P9 Questions & Answers

Hi everyone! It's my 1st time posting here. I will be upgrading my plan and i was thinking of getting P9. I just need quick opinion if its worth choosing this phone based on everyones overall experience here.
Would really appreciate your inputs. ?

Don't do it i came from samsung note 3 en have now the P9. I wish i never buy it ......i go back to samsung.

On the other hand, I came from an S5 and the Huawei is a far better phone...

I've had Samsung Note 2, LG G3, OnePlus 2... The P9 has them all beat if you ask me. Great design, great camera, good battery life, fast and smooth processor. EMUI takes some getting used to and takes a bit longer to set up, but after that everything just works. No little quirks, no overheating, no random reboots...
I've had it for 3 months now and I still see no reason to root it. Very happy with the phone.

I came from Windows and Lumia 950XL, tried a couple of Android devices before finally sticking with the P9.
It's a great phone and is much more stable and less issues with apps running and permissions etc than I found on other Android devices.
The only problem for me would be there with most devices..there is no dedicated camera button like I had on Windows for last 6 years.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have tried the demo unit and so far everyrhing seems really nice. My only qualm I guess is the slow support in terms of software development but I could be wrong as well. After all this is a new phone that needs some familiarizing.
Thanks again everyone ? ??

[Q] Does this phone really worth buying?

Hello guys,
I'm as of now an iPhone 5 user and my parents have took my phone away because i was using it "too much" for about 5 months ago. Today, me and my parents have been saiyng that because my mom bought a Lumia 920 but she haves some problems with it etc. etc... She said, that she will be using my iPhone 5 as shes normal phone and they offered me a deal, i would still have the iPhone 5 which i can't use much, OR if i'll consider about the S3 Mini. So here's my question, does the S3 Mini worth? Are there many ROMs? Do the features are almost same as in iPhone 5? Does CM11 lags really much or bugs? Is the multitasking good as in iPhone? Can the phone be good in hardware for about next 3-4 years? Therefore, thanks to all who can answer me those questions.
Is it worth the money?
Yes it is, just bought mine a few months ago, but i think i'll be happy with it for at least a few years.
Same features as the iPhone 5?
Yes and no... there will always be some differences and the most notably will be the display, which is good, but not as good as the one off the iPhone 5.
CM11?
Works fine on my S3 mini GT-I8190, with no lags and bugs at all, if you ignore the small problem with the haptic-feedback on the softbuttons.
Mutitasking?
It is even better than the MT implementation of the iPhone, simply because Android was designed for MT right away.
Will it last for 3-4 years?
Probably not. It's already "old" and samsung isn't even considering updating it to android 4.4.3. It is clearly possible, at least with a stock-like ROM, but they wont do it because their apps won't work very well on it, or they're just to lazy. Take a pic.
With that said, it is still a very good phone, otherwise it wouldn't be sold anymore by major retailers. And the userbase is big enough so that the CM community will supply updated ROM's for it, keeping it up to date, sort of. So it isn't a bad pic, but there won't be much manufacture support for it anymore.

Ok, thanks for the reply, just again with the phone, i meaned the CPU architecture ARMv7, will it be good for gaming, for some apps for the 2-3 years? 'cause i still have a Galaxy Mini which has ARMv6 and there's almost nothing except like really obsolete apps and so on. I'm asking because in case like i have buyed the phone and the next they would announce ARMv8 i would sit in back in front of the door and cry. (Not true but i hope someone understands it )
When it comes to mobile games, I'm not your man. I just have some casual stuff but it works just fine. I mainly use my pc for gaming.

Depends which games you wanna play on it. Small games (less than 100MB) run fine with music playback and a bunch of apps syncing in the background (like Whatsapp, FB, Skype etc.). But when it comes to games like GTA, NFS or similar, they do indeed SOMETIMES lag noticably. In other words, if you're just gonna use the phone for calls, music, web, small games, etc. then it's great. But if you expect to play the newest available games on the S3 Mini without lagging then go look elsewhere (S4 Mini comes to mind). So yeah, that's about it. Let us know what you buy Good luck!

Thank You guys really much, but it's not only games, there are also apps that require the ARMv7 architecture. So I'll simple the question, will be there any new mobile CPU architecture ? (ARMv8 etc.)

I'm reading this article http://www.androidauthority.com/arms-rise-small-acorn-world-leader-376606/ and found out that there might be ARMv8 64-bit. It's written in the 1st paragraph of the article. Take a look.

Ok but when the architecture of the processor will be taken to mobile devices, i think that most of the app will require that architecture... but as they do that, it would need like 2 years so the mobile application companies starts officially supporting and requiring the CPU architecture for their apps, or?
If you're worrying about the architecture, then i can tell you don't have to... the switch to 64 bit only apps wont happen within the next 3-5 years. Just look at the PC, 64 bit for more than 10 years... and still almost no 64bit exclusive programs.
This phone works really nice for me with Carbon ROM 4.4.3 by Maclaw.
i'd go for full-time s3 mini

Samsung PR lollipop.. Be honest?

Am I the only person who wish Samsung would keep us updated. Even a statement like.... we have found a number of issues with lollipop which will take some time to resolve. We want you to have a great experience so we will ensure that when we send out the update you will enjoy the benefits. Please be patient.. We hope to send out the updates by end of April.
It would save us all checking for updates. Plus make Samsung a more human company
Would be good if the 910G snapdragon variant actually got lollipop....
**** Samsung, getting iPhone 6 soon if LP is not released anytime soon!
Mate that's a crazy thing to say... I would still prefer 4.4 then own another iphone
Agreed, at least some info would be nice. I'm running lollipop on a few of my other devices now, the note 4 is lagging behind

The amnoyance in regards to this is that both the Note 3, S4 & S5 seem to have had a wider rollout so far than the Note 4. Likewise Samsung's PR were promising a rollout to Android within a couple of months of its final release when the Note 4 was released and thar seemingly has been abandoned too. It just leads to user apathy and distrust.

OS Updates for mobiles are so much overrated.
What features did lollipop bring that are important to you?
I could even use gingerbread today and it would work for mostly anything that I'd want to do.

Hoping for honesty from the PR arm of an international chaebol is like nicely asking a stone if it wouldn't mind bleeding a bit. It also assumes that they are even remotely interested in providing these kinds of updates, that they communicate with the developers, and that they have that information in the first place. They've done their job already - you've bought a Note 4, so why should they care? Besides which, if they've already stated a timeframe previously, and been unable to meet it, they're going to be very cautious about announcing anything else apart from "it'll be ready when it's ready", and even that is unlikely compared to simply remaining silent.

Sweet. I'll just enjoy that sexy Material OS on gingerbread. Ah nope. Can't do that. What about speed and efficiency? I can enjoy that. Ah nope. Not on GB either. Hmmm. What about those awesome notification cards. Ah nope. Still no luck. Thats ok I'll just make an app to enjoy using Level 21 API. Nope can't do that either. So I can send texts and make phone calls. Awesome. Same thing I could do on my Motorola i560. There are a ton of things to enjoy with Lollipop. I do understand where you are coming from. Lollipop is innovative, fast, beautiful and efficient. Those are things that can be very scary to someone so conservative.

This is totally true....why get a device like the Note 4 if you are ok with Gingerbread...I don't understand people who get such a good phone and don;t know how to eve use it...but rather use it for calls and messages only...

I sincerely hope this post is a joke; if I merely cared about apps I'd own an iPhone.
I bought a 800€ smartphone i espect to have the lastest and best software. Thats why so many people is going from android to iOS. If you have a iPhonne 6+ you have the lastest iOS. Next time a change smartphonne i am going to think twice before have Android or iOS, and for me Nexus line are no option, ugly and overrated. For me Samsung or HTC or LG (this two allready have 5.0 Lolipop)
I updated my Moto X 2014 to lollipop and it made it slower, worse battery and it stuttered more than it did on kitkat. Also with all the problems people were talking about on most of the phones that got the update(not just Samsung) why are people in such a rush? Google really messed up with lollipop.
I would like to get the S6 TW though.

I've not had any problems with 5.0 on my Moto X 2014
Performs like a champ. No FC's and no stutters or 'contacts stopped working' bugs.
That being said, It would be nice to see 5.1 sometime soon on both it and the Note 4. Had to rollback my Note 4 to KitKat as performance was so bad on lollipop for me.

why i want lollipop and Samsung to treat us better
based on google claims ...better security. no lags, the apps like quickpik can delete photos and much more usability...hoping for better camera.plus many other things on lollipop
every year I think of going back to the Iphone ,,,but now the iphone 6 plus is a real competitor ....but this upgrade policy and silence from Samsung is really annoying .
later this year if the iphone 7 competes with the note 6 I will have to consider changing to
iphone ....upgrades are fast on iphone ,works works worldwide every language preinstalled Samsung doesnt) both have good battery the iphone 6 plus better camera in most cases but marginal .the fingerprint
is a joke on note 4 .
im just ranting cause got another error re my names have crashed again. ...grrr
Finally android sumsung after all these years cant offer a full back up and restore .
this rant is after watching a friend of mine just buying a new Iphone 6 and everything but evething restores in one go ...awesom ...Im not rooted so it takes a whole day for me to restor everthing ... Im restarting my phone daily these days so bad day for me sorry about the ranting
come on samsung TREAT EXISTING CUSTOMERS better.

iPhone are great for fluidity and fast updates, but they lack the customization and freedom that android offers even with Jailbreak.
Also , I don't know if you need glasses or not, but the note 4 camera beats the iPhone any day in good light situations...both in photos and videos.

Yeah I didn't have major problems but the battery is worse and it just wasn't as smooth and quick as it was on kitkat. I didn't have the app redraws that others had but I put that down to a full wipe before and after the update.

What phone are you coming from? Why the P9?

I use a LG G3, 2 years later, looking at LG G5... Its ugly, smaller screen, no back buttons, no wireless charging, disappointed, so... now looking at P9 Plus as the best phone out there... Where are you coming from? And why the interest in the P9?

P9 plus will be expensive..
For me apealing features :
64gb+4gb+DualSim+IrBlaster+5.5InchScreen+FingerprintReader+DualSpeakers
(Other main features are add on for me ?? )
Like force touch+3400mAh+price+......
ALL THESE TOGATHER....finally!!!
Is there any phone with same or more features combined
Yes there was a phone with almost same features. ...HTC ONE ME but screen little small and Zero development.... so sad
Hope P9 Plus will get good support from Devs here in XDA
I am interested in the P9 Plus or the HTC 10, I'll be coming from a HTC M9+, I am also interested in the big screen, IR and stereo speakers. I just worry about the speediness of Huawei on OS upgrades. Not sure the P8 has officially got Marshmallow everywhere yet, so Lord knows when you'd get Android N with the P9 or P9 Plus

Totally agree, this is like the phone I've been waiting for since I got my G2. Unfortunately to me the 3rd party dev support is what's gonna make it or break it...
I've been a loyal BlackBerry user for as long as I've had a smartphone: 9000, 9800, Z10, Z30 and currently Passport. Unfortunately even I've had to admit that BB10 is in it's final death throes. I flirted with the Sony Xperia S between the 9800 and the launch of the Z10 and the 3rd party ROM development was a big attraction. However the spec of the P9 Plus ticks all the boxes and coupled with the fact that I'm a Leica owner anyway, the draw (gimmick) of the Leica tie in, means that even without the ROM development the P9+ is likely to be my next phone.
Do any of you know when this is coming to NA?

I'll thinking about the P9 Plus, G5 or HTC M10 .
So sick of Samsung with it's crapphones that going to die after mostly 1.5-2 years . Happend to my s3, s4, s5 active and now my Note 4 - after 3 months.
I hate this company at all.

I hope the dev community gets even a little support, because I plan to come from a ZTE Axon Elite, the Mate 8 has a decent amount of dev support including ROM's and stuff so hopefully the P9 Plus does too. Other than that, the AMOLED display, the faster more efficient processor, bigger battery, and (hopefully) better camera are drawing me over my current device, I would highly doubt audio is better though.

good:
apart from the weakness, all is superb

so if someone from xda released an excellent and stable custom rom 6 month after release, this will fix the ****ty UI and bloatware problem, and the phone shall be one of the best on the market. Yes?!
If so i'm gonna make the switch from my iphone 6 plus
Have a Sony Z2 since release and searching for a new phone. I am interested in the camera, big memory and battery. Seems like a great phone! Hope the "bugs" will be fixed like battery drain and something with the SD-card not being able to behave like internal memory (please correct me).
Only a month left until I am able to buy a P9 plus. Oh, it is not shipped with the possibility to use 2 sims here in Sweden.

I came from an iPhone 6s plus and i must add that im blown away by the speed and smoothness of this phone.
Another thing to consider is the sustained performance that the phone can deliver, i haven't noticed any throttle after 1+ hours of gaming.

Best phone I have owned yet! I also like the look of it. Second only to my first HTC, the HTC Touch. Just another perspective.
Just curious. If you dont like something, is it your norm to go look for that particular items web forum and start a thread about your dislike?
You must have a lot of free time.
Haha. I'm subscribed to this forum, as I had every intention of upgrading to the 10, just as I have in the past with every other HTC phone since the OG Evo. I am an HTC fanboy.
But, let's be realistic: the 10 is nothing fantastic. HTC has once again stuck to dull changes, that may very well bankrupt their company.
Their biggest marketing is chamferred edges? Really? Don't get me wrong, the OG Evo was an "Evolution" in technology, but it seems like HTC is done with the ground-breaking ideas it once cornered the market with.
I stay-up on all the tech articles on all forms of technology, and I truly believe HTC dropped the ball on this phone, especially with the Note 7 and iPhone 7 coming-out. It may very well be just Sammy vs. Apple very soon.
Sent from my 831C using XDA Free mobile app
I don't understand... You are entitled to your opinion, but I am not seeing the writing of an HTC fanboy.
So yeah, being realistic, I don't agree with you. To me this phone is fantastic! I would like to point out that being realistic is NOT comparing a phone to phones that are not released yet. That is called unrealistic. Anyways we get it, you don't like it. Cool. I am absolutely loving my 10.
If you like to root a phone, good luck with your note 7 phone.....

Apple very soon.

just curious, what do u think it's lacking? what would it take to wow you?
I wouldn't say I'm blown away w/ the 10 but I do love it, but I also loved the M9...honestly I don't know what it would take to really wow me on a smartphone...I am happy w/ updated specs/hardware & software features...I think HTC made a good move streamlining & using more stock google features, running stock is no longer unbearable.

What up omj,I've had the m7,m8,m9 on sprint and I loved them all,the only problem I had was on the m9 was that I had data connectivity stop working and I would have to reboot the phone to get it to start working again several times a day when my m9 connected to band 41.
Has there been any reports of this issue also occurring on the HTC 10?

And because of that I had to get back on my m8,Has there been any reports of this issue also occurring on the HTC 10?
Have not had a single issue with this phone. And it has the camera we all dreamed that HTC would use in a phone.
Buy the phone that makes you happy. I for one love the 10. Can finally use sense widgets with different launchers and whole sense feel is stock Android like. I have a feeling HTC will be pushing updates a lot faster now because of it.

I'm not dogging the phone guys. Come-on, give me some slack here . . .
But, that's the thing that everyone asks me: what would it take to "wow" me, and I almost wonder if it can no-longer be done. Android is the same thing, over & over again. Idk, I guess what I want to see from a OS standpoint is like jumping from Windows 3.1 to Windows 10. I want to see a complete refresh. And, I expect the same from HTC. Having the same exact design as the M phone's, with minor hardware upgrades does not have me salivating.
I want another revolutionary HTC phone like the OG Evo, and I truly think Samsung is coming out with something that will blow the socks off any competition.

What wow'ed me was the camera and fingerprint scanner. That was enough for me, HTC did make it hard for me to theme but now everyone can be a themer. It is a nice upgrade from the M9 to me. Dude get what you want, you have to live with it.
Dude the next big tech jump will be flexible phones. That's about it. What else can you geek into a phone? What do you wish the phone would have? It ain't happening. We are at the apex of these things and all that can be done is cosmetic. The OS is constantly changing and will always include new innovative changes. But nothing is going to drastically change for awhile. They'll get slimmer, lighter, faster, last longer in bed, but that's about it. So just pick a phone and enjoy it because in 6 months something will be out that's better any way.

When some sort of AI and VR is is somehow built into OS, maybe then. But for now, this is what we got. And the sd820 is fast as hell, and hard to imagine it disappointing anyone

Well, two weeks till the Note 7 is announced. I honestly hope the specs on it are not all they're cracked-up to be, as it will push me to get the 10. Sammy's have **** for support, as the bootloaders are locked. My brother and buddy both have the S7 Edge. Buddy loves it, brother says "ehh". He switches phones every couple of months though. He has his eyes on the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro with Google Tango. He's kinda like me, he gets bored quickly. I'll never switch to an iPhone though.
The next Nexus intrigues me, especially if HTC is making one . . .

Nexus 5 is 4 years old today.

And still going strong.
Still getting OS updates on DarkROM nougat.
Oreo is nearly ready for daily driver. Thanks devs.
This thing just keeps on working.
My 6p died. Symptoms: Boot Loop of Death. Now I am here posting from my Nexus 5. Works like a champ ^^
Which rom do you recommend? there will be miui 9 for nexus 5 would be great
Congrats for this amazing device. \m/ still rocking.
still rocking my Hammerhead. One of my favorite android device.
Actually i have Miui 8 on my nexus 5 and works very well after 4 years. But recently i broke the glass screen (not display) and sometimes power button go in stuck. So i was looking for a new device, but there are no more new nexus. Pixel are so expensive and also OnePlus become expensive with the 5 and 5T models (3T was the last good oneplus phone for price-quality ratio in my opinion, but unfortunately i can't buy it anymore from official site). Soooo (this is the last "so", promised) somebody has any idea which phone i could buy for a price from 350$ to 450$ ?
I'm looking mainly for a device with a good developers community like Nexus and OP. Thank you!
I hope my Nexus 5 will work well at least till end of next year.
But e.g. HTC U11 Life looks promising.
It's still the most stable phone I own, and has the widest range of custom roms available for it I've ever seen.
Long live 5 :good:

Go for a used first gen Google Pixel.
As much as I enjoy comparing phones, there is no direct replacement for the N5. Other phones are always missing something, but - to be fair - make it up on other areas.
If you like the size, you could go for the pixel, but good luck finding that one and for a decent price.
The Android One devices look great if all you want is bare Android with updates, but it remains a question how long that will continue. The dev community is non-existent at the moment as far as I can tell, so no root or custom roms.
I have my sights on the Moto G5 Plus as a next device: decent price & specs (memory/storage/sd) and an active xda community. It's a bit larger and heavier and doesn't have wifi ac for instance.
I am getting bored of my N5, but then there's this new flood of roms coming out and you can play with the latest stuff in such an attractive form factor... I can't find an excuse anymore....
I'd go for a used Pixel, Oneplus 5 (if you has the cash) or, if you want to really stay in the cheap but good af area, Xiaomi A1, in my mind, it's the real nexus 5 replacement.
Anyway, for now I'm still rocking my N5.
I think i'll go for a second hand OnePlus 3T. But Essential Phone is very gorgeuos *.*
I'm running nougat now but i feel it consumes too much ram and occasional lag is common on device with only 2GB of ram. Does anyone still rocking an old android version? I'm looking for a slightly older OS that best for N5 performance + battery. Which rom + kernel do you think is the best? Thanks.

I wish go back in 2014 where i got my nexus 5.

Pixel looks like the perfect upgrade from N5. What could you miss? Wireless charging?

I was on nougat DarkROM for a long time. Had the same experience with lagging. Oreo feels like it does much better than Nougat. Lemme know how it goes if you return to an old android version.

Thanks for the suggestions, so i tried AOSIP 7 for a while. It was smooth at first, but then it become quite laggy like nougat, youtube loads longer, fullscreen video rotate took more effort to load. I can't rely on multitasking if i opened facebook app and some app simultaneously. Also, initial memory usage is a lot. I must use facebook + page manager + ads manager because of work purposes and i felt like i was using a cheap 100$ phone [emoji23]
So i remembered pure nexus & nitrogen rom glory back in marshmallow day. So i went back, flashed latest pure nexus marshmallow 6.0.1 + blu_spark 108. I think i will stick on this rom from now on.

I think you're absolutely right. N and O lag way too much where it counts: memory management. I went back to stock M recently, and even though the GUI stutters a bit, the things you mentioned plus the keyboard popping up quickly are what make this NOT feel like a $100 phone.
