Goodbye Nexus 4, Hello Pixel XL - Nexus 4 General

I would like to express myself. This was my 2nd Android device and Nexus device and I haven't looked back since. The best at the time of release, and was able to use it till now, even got to use Nougat on it via custom ROMs. Huge thanks to the developer who are keep making it better with the every release of new OS and porting it for it. Special thanks to @ganachoco @sykopompos @snak3ater @spezi77 and all the others too. Sorry if I forgot somebody. I wanted to buy the 6P but due to some reasons it got postponed then Google release the Pixel and I've been eyeing it for a while, the XL model because I am using N4 for a long time and need a bigger phone. My Nexus 4's performance not good, obviously it can be better with some tweaks but I left that tweaking side of me. Also battery life became poor, the camera had more noise than usual.
So that's it for me, I would like to say goodbye and thank you. See you all on the other side (Pixel forums).
RIP, Nexus 4 2013 - November 27, 2016

Hum, that's kind of sad to read -- but definitely a wise decision to move on and experience something new, try something different!
Maybe we will meet again on the Pixel (XL) forums, the sooner or later.. who knows.
Bye for now.
P.S.: Are you willing to contribute your Nexus 4? I could need an alternative device to continue developments. Please PM me. :fingers-crossed:

N4 was my first smartphone too, although not my first Android device, which was an Acer Iconia A100.

Nexus 4 and AOSP

Hi all,
I know the N4 has enough source code in AOSP and elsewhere to be able to build an AOSP ROM, but it doesn't quite seem "official" and doesn't offer that undeniable security of "Nexus support" that many have come to know and love. Now, I know people have said it's due to the Qualcomm chip being so new that it would take time to officially work it in, and that it'll likely come around with 4.2.2. Even still, I'm paranoid (just having bought an N4 myself). Is anyone else worried about the N4's future? Or is it just buyer's paranoia?
I'd love to hear some thoughts on this!
Just paranoid, you can't build a fully working Nexus 7 ROM solely from AOSP either, thanks to Tegra.

I figured that it was just that. But I suppose I was just seeking some reassurance haha. Between the recent articles on LG only making "as many Nexus 4's as they want," the speculations going around about the Nexus 5, and this lack of any word on AOSP support, I just got awfully scared that the Nexus 4 might be one of those devices that isn't around and supported for very long.
Speculations....Don't you love them when device is new...
Give it another month or two and everything will go back to "normal", just like with any other device.

Haha I know, I know. But this was a big buy for me; relatively expensive and I'm ditching VZW for it. I'm just worried that I'll regret it later on, I guess.

I've built AOSP for it myself, that isn't the issue; it's a more general statement. I'm not relying on anyone for satisfaction, but there's a certain plus to being in a larger community rather than in one where it's only a few who feel stuck with the device.

Samsung PR lollipop.. Be honest?

Am I the only person who wish Samsung would keep us updated. Even a statement like.... we have found a number of issues with lollipop which will take some time to resolve. We want you to have a great experience so we will ensure that when we send out the update you will enjoy the benefits. Please be patient.. We hope to send out the updates by end of April.
It would save us all checking for updates. Plus make Samsung a more human company
Would be good if the 910G snapdragon variant actually got lollipop....
**** Samsung, getting iPhone 6 soon if LP is not released anytime soon!
Mate that's a crazy thing to say... I would still prefer 4.4 then own another iphone
Agreed, at least some info would be nice. I'm running lollipop on a few of my other devices now, the note 4 is lagging behind

The amnoyance in regards to this is that both the Note 3, S4 & S5 seem to have had a wider rollout so far than the Note 4. Likewise Samsung's PR were promising a rollout to Android within a couple of months of its final release when the Note 4 was released and thar seemingly has been abandoned too. It just leads to user apathy and distrust.

OS Updates for mobiles are so much overrated.
What features did lollipop bring that are important to you?
I could even use gingerbread today and it would work for mostly anything that I'd want to do.

Hoping for honesty from the PR arm of an international chaebol is like nicely asking a stone if it wouldn't mind bleeding a bit. It also assumes that they are even remotely interested in providing these kinds of updates, that they communicate with the developers, and that they have that information in the first place. They've done their job already - you've bought a Note 4, so why should they care? Besides which, if they've already stated a timeframe previously, and been unable to meet it, they're going to be very cautious about announcing anything else apart from "it'll be ready when it's ready", and even that is unlikely compared to simply remaining silent.

Sweet. I'll just enjoy that sexy Material OS on gingerbread. Ah nope. Can't do that. What about speed and efficiency? I can enjoy that. Ah nope. Not on GB either. Hmmm. What about those awesome notification cards. Ah nope. Still no luck. Thats ok I'll just make an app to enjoy using Level 21 API. Nope can't do that either. So I can send texts and make phone calls. Awesome. Same thing I could do on my Motorola i560. There are a ton of things to enjoy with Lollipop. I do understand where you are coming from. Lollipop is innovative, fast, beautiful and efficient. Those are things that can be very scary to someone so conservative.

I sincerely hope this post is a joke; if I merely cared about apps I'd own an iPhone.
I bought a 800€ smartphone i espect to have the lastest and best software. Thats why so many people is going from android to iOS. If you have a iPhonne 6+ you have the lastest iOS. Next time a change smartphonne i am going to think twice before have Android or iOS, and for me Nexus line are no option, ugly and overrated. For me Samsung or HTC or LG (this two allready have 5.0 Lolipop)
I updated my Moto X 2014 to lollipop and it made it slower, worse battery and it stuttered more than it did on kitkat. Also with all the problems people were talking about on most of the phones that got the update(not just Samsung) why are people in such a rush? Google really messed up with lollipop.
I would like to get the S6 TW though.

I've not had any problems with 5.0 on my Moto X 2014
Performs like a champ. No FC's and no stutters or 'contacts stopped working' bugs.
That being said, It would be nice to see 5.1 sometime soon on both it and the Note 4. Had to rollback my Note 4 to KitKat as performance was so bad on lollipop for me.

why i want lollipop and Samsung to treat us better
based on google claims ...better security. no lags, the apps like quickpik can delete photos and much more usability...hoping for better camera.plus many other things on lollipop
every year I think of going back to the Iphone ,,,but now the iphone 6 plus is a real competitor ....but this upgrade policy and silence from Samsung is really annoying .
later this year if the iphone 7 competes with the note 6 I will have to consider changing to
iphone ....upgrades are fast on iphone ,works works worldwide every language preinstalled Samsung doesnt) both have good battery the iphone 6 plus better camera in most cases but marginal .the fingerprint
is a joke on note 4 .
im just ranting cause got another error re my names have crashed again. ...grrr
Finally android sumsung after all these years cant offer a full back up and restore .
this rant is after watching a friend of mine just buying a new Iphone 6 and everything but evething restores in one go ...awesom ...Im not rooted so it takes a whole day for me to restor everthing ... Im restarting my phone daily these days so bad day for me sorry about the ranting
come on samsung TREAT EXISTING CUSTOMERS better.

iPhone are great for fluidity and fast updates, but they lack the customization and freedom that android offers even with Jailbreak.
Also , I don't know if you need glasses or not, but the note 4 camera beats the iPhone any day in good light situations...both in photos and videos.

Yeah I didn't have major problems but the battery is worse and it just wasn't as smooth and quick as it was on kitkat. I didn't have the app redraws that others had but I put that down to a full wipe before and after the update.

My concern are Android updates

I think the specs for the OnePlus Three for the price are AMAZING and unbelievable, it's almost $150 less than the Nexus 6P, with 2016 flagship hardware, and the leaked pictures show it to be a very high quality crafted device. The new Three looks like a larger HTC 10, which is fine by me, as the 10 is a great smartphone.
But...
My biggest gripes with OPO are the slow Android updates. I recall Lollipop taking for god damn ever to officially make it out for the original One, like 6 months, or you could have installed the alpha CM11 at the time, which was pretty buggy until the bugs were worked out, obviously, but the official OnePlus One Lollipop OS update took a very long time.
This OnePlus Three will be lucky to see Android N within 90 days after the Nexus phones get it first in October, or you can install the alpha CM14 sooner on it, and live through all the kinks and bugs, that will have, while waiting for OPO to release N.
I thought one of the big features on these OPO phones being AOSP based, would have been super fast Android updates, not Nexus fast updates obviously, but at least faster than the skinned versions of Android like HTC, LG, Samsung, etc... but that hasn't been the case. I thought OnePlus would have the latest version of Android on them within like 30 days or so after Nexus phones, in reality they are worse than Samsung.
Bottom line; Great flagship hardware for a budget price. Beautiful design.
But...software is really amateur for an official professional phone release. I'd rather Cyanogen be back on board creating a stable pro CM13S for this phone. Oxygen OS still seems like some weekend development project.
OnePlus came late with their Android6.0 update for the OP2, so I share your concerns.
But the custom development for the OP3 will be great, so many ROMS there before the official updates.
And many other brands are also slow with updates, or even slower. (not an excuse for OnePlus )
I will go for the OP3 because:
to go for a device with guaranteed faster updates you limit your device choice, you will most likely pay a lot more, and the specs won't be much better, and the XDA development will most likely be worse.
So (expecting) slow updates is a legit disadvantage, but it doesn't win from the advantages in my opinion.
Good points thanks
Now let's see some real hands on reviews. How good is the AMOLED screen being in 1080p ? Is the build quality as high and great like HTC 10 ? Speaker sounds ? Feel in hand ?
I know hardware wise it's gonna be a champ.
I guess you did not see the news?
http://www.xda-developers.com/oxygenos-open-sourced-ahead-of-oneplus-3-launch/
Will that news get us Android N much faster ? I wanna see the OnePlus Three get Android N like 30 days after the Nexus phones, then i impressed.
I just got the one plus two yesterday, found out about the 3 two days after I ordered, ugh. No worries though, I believe it will be released by the 14th and that is well within my return period!
I can't even explain how cool just the box it comes in is! This is quality I would pay s7 prices for, hands down. I keep looking around for cops every time I pick up the phone, feels like I stole it! But seriously, the OTA's don't bother me a bit, they'll get here when they get here! I feel like the development here on xda will be enough to tide someone over until we get a proper image. I feel like this OP3 is going to be the banger for one plus all together.
The 1080p question the OP had, I honestly feel like that's just a marketing ploy by the big boys, can the naked eye really tell on a phone, even this size? For me personally, I don't notice anything! I honestly think you'll be able to look past both of those once you feel the box...lol!
Sent from my ONE A2005 using XDA-Developers mobile app
while we all are at xda, i don't really care about update from OP. You bet - the very first custom ROM will be available in weeks from June 14th and android N will be on OP# in days.
As someone who has paid top dollar for Samsung flagship phones, all I can say is that updates are slow here, too - maybe even slower than Oneplus .
Sent from my SM-N910U using Tapatalk

Call Google for Android N on Nexus 5

Hello my fellow Nexus 5 owners, lovers, we gather here for one request: Android N official for Nexus 5. There are many rumors that Marshmallow will be the last official Android version for Nexus 5. Marshmallow has been out for a while but the major release of Android N comes to fast. Nexus 5 in my opinion is still, the best Nexus phone. I'm not calling for lifetime support, only this version. Google gave us nearly no time enjoying official support, and immediately they take it from us. With all the love of Android, I ask everyone, to encourage Google to make the last official Android version, for the Nexus 5.

Oh come on... Another one..
Stop with wasting your time, Google doesn't care about how much people would like to have an official Android N release for their Nexus 5. They have given us the promised support time for Android updates, they owe us nothing. We already had that guy who started a petition which is pointless because Google probably won't even see it. So quit this BS and just keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best. You won't be able to make sure that Google will give the Nexus 5 just one more update, they may will or maybe not.

Google gives every Nexus device 2 years of support on average. I wouldn't call that "nearly no time enjoying official support". They're unlikely to even consider a request to update a device that reached it's EOL for major updates almost a year ago. The unofficial development community for this device continues to thrive nevertheless, so you will most likely get an unofficial N build that's more than good enough for daily use.
This device had its time, but it EOL now. It'll still have unofficial updates for a foreseeable future, but if official updates matter more, then you'll need to move to a newer device. Personally, I don't really care too much about the support because if I did, I would have bought a N5X instead of the N5 a couple months back when I had the choice.

I'm going to wait and see what happens on the official updates front for Android N. Personally, I'd like to see it for the Nexus 5 but if it doesn't roll out for this phone right now, I'll probably be going to Cyanogenmod. That's what I'm running now because I cannot stand the Layers app. Prefer CM Themes to Layers.
Cindy
If Google provides Android N, they will feel obliged to support it with N bug fixes. This will force support for another six months as bugs are ironed out.
Why do you need to call Google? We have used our official support time which is 2-years. Also, do we need their official support? CM is with us.

Nexus 5 and nexus 7 2013 are both dead I guarantee it. The nexus 4 and nexus 10 had enough power for marshmallow but they didn't get it. I expect the 2013 devices to get the ax this year. Gotta wonder though why everyone is so eager to hold on to the nexus 5? I mean I still have mine as an emergency backup phone but the battery life is gawd awful and camera is so mediocre compared to new phones. I'm rocking a 6p currently and it's world's ahead of the old 5!

Maybe because with the improvements to Doze and background processing, the Nexus 5's battery life would see significant improvements?

Another one saying things they know nothing about. You can't guarantee anyone what you said. You know nothing for sure like everyone else.
Yes it will be very unlikely that the nexus get's one more update but it may will happen, there is a small chance.
Oh yeah it'll get it because you know the 2012 nexuses totally got marshmallow from Google last year /sarcasm.

Android 8 for SM-G900F

Hi to all SM-G900F fans and for all developers!
I'd like to introduce this topic to discuss about the possibility of the Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F to have the new Android 8. Knowing about some amazing improvements that were made to the new Android 8 that will arrive soon, I'd like to know the following:
[ALL FANS] - What do you think about our S5 SM-G900F having an Android 8 ROM? With a booting time cut in half, with app performance increased in double, with drivers available to update, etc.? If that will be possible to the developers apply to the S5 SM-G900F, it would be great or not?
[ALL DEVELOPERS] - What do you think about the idea of creating an Android 8 ROM for a great 2014 phone? It will be possible to do that with all improvements that were claimed for the new Android 8? It will worth that huge effort?
As you can see I love this phone, no doubt about that. But, my wish is to have my Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F running Android 8 with all those features that were claimed to have in the new Android OS. If that can be possible, I think it would be amazing for this phone! Because I think the hardware is still good to support newer software and it would be very nice to see an excellent quality/price phone like this to match new ones.
I hope my wish can became true. . .please do not let this phone R.I.P!

"booting time cut in half, with app performance increased in double, with drivers available to update" Idk if it is possible, but it will be quite hard. If android 8 will come out, we developers WILL DO OUR BEST to get the best out of the s5. Seriously, we try our best but stop saying things like this, developers do this things without wanting anything in advance from you, SO PLEASE BE PATIENT! And please don't open threads like this because it is like opening a thread and just saying "i bought a new phone and i am happy (no **** sherlock lol) "!

Yeah, you're absolutely right and I apologize for my behavior. I was only excited about that I just decided to try to share my feelings and thoughts with the XDA Community. I love XDA Developers. It teached me so much about everything related to Android over the years. However, I must follow all the rules and have a good behavior so please feel free to remove/delete this thread.
Once again, I'm sorry for having opened this thread. Just a BIG "thank you" to all developers for the hard work they always do and for all members that share doubts and solutions for everything related to Android.
Best regards,
Lu

It's alright to discuss about such things, but never push devs beyond what they can do. You simply show disrespect and it's one of the main reasons why devs give up creating something new.
Regarding Android 8 (Android O), I don't think it's going to be an easy task to port it to our device. At first, on Nougat was hard enough to make everything working (camera being one of the main highlights, since N has a completely revamped camera interface under the hood, like different process handling and stuff). I can't imagine, what O actually brings to the table and in no way it's going be a walk in the park.
And neither battery life nor camera is going to be as good as stock. Blame Samsung and Touchwiz for their closed source nature.
Even if it happens, camera will still suck. Why flash something that makes your phone worst and unstable, just to say that you have the latest android version in "phone about"
I don't know why you are so hyped about it, it has really small changes since Lollipop...

Of course not. It's about to have all the NEW features in your OLD phone (if possible, of course). I think there are several phones (like the Samsung Galaxy S5) that have plenty potencial to run newer software. Besides that, one teacher I had, one day, he told in the classroom that there's no limits when programming, it only depends on our imagination to create solutions. I'm nobody to say that his words are correct or not, but I believe if there's will and hope that things are capable to be made.

I'd love to see Android 8 on my S5. It is true and it will be always true that the stock TW camera is the best one. It has slow-mo and 1080p60 video (I know that OnePlus camera has 720p90fps slow-mo, but that's not that great comapared to the stock.) But in my opinion, for some picture shooting, it is a great camera with the stock Lineage camera as well. (Maybe one day someone can find Samsung's driver).
Besides that, the S5 runs great with the latest 7.1.2 Android, and I believe that it will run as fast (if not better) with Android O.
Definetly hope for an upcoming information, devs: take your time, make a great rom.
I don't see anything wrong with this topic? The guy just asked if it's possible lol He didn't tell you "MAKE IT NOW!!". About stock android 8 - no. Stock android is boring, even Samsung's version of KitKat has more features than the newest stock android from Google. But some sort of port from, let's say, the Note 8 or the Galaxy S9 would be awesome in my opinion. There already are S8 ports for the KLTE which work with little bugs that will be fixed soon (SkiesROM) or ones that don't really matter that much (DreamUX ROM). Hardware is more than capable. iPhones have super low hardware and Apple updates them for 4-5 years ahead. This means that 'old' 2014 hardware like the S5's can be used perfectly fine even in 2020...with the right developers. BUT, nothing beats official Sammy firmware. Sure, you'll get the new features from android O(reo?) and the new Note8/S9 but bugs are inevitable whereas TouchWiz 6.0.1 is fine in every aspect. I'll stick to my S5 until 2019-2020 and then buy a new S10 or S11 (xd). I just hope that Samsung bring back the features from the S5 like IR blaster, fingerprint scanner on the front, hover view in the gallery and video apps, etc. FM Radio won't hurt too (still envy my S3 Mini for having it, 1%=3h radio) :|
