#WhyNoKernelSourcesYetOnePlus - OnePlus 3 Guides, News, & Discussion

I created this hashtag so those of us who are still waiting for the kernel sources to be pushed out for OP3/3T, twelve days after the official update to Nougat, can make an active affirmation on Twitter, Facebook, reddit, Instagram and so on... in an organized way.
I am not a developer.
Rather an enthusiastic user with taste for that special flavour on my device.
I'm not trying to start a discussion here, it has already started on development threads.
Now make some noise, but please be civilized.
#WhyNoKernelSourcesYetOnePlus

Honestly, that's a pretty awful tag. Should be like half that length.

They said they don't want to release bad code.
They said 4.0.2 is coming next week.
They are not yet confident with their N releases. Fair enough.

If it's good enough to be publicly released as stable OTA, then it's also good enough for code release.

Code should be dropped with the OTA go spam them on twitter and remind them to be dev friendly

It's not about spamming. It's about asking for the sources. If they drop them before sending the first units when releasing a device they should do the same for new system updates.

Paranoid me is thinking that they dropped Nougat, everyone updated... Gathering data for weeks, going to throw another update our way and release sources after they scrubbed the data suckers.
Putting the tin foil hat back on now
?

So OnePlus when ????

XDA article posted ... Let's hope it helps.

XDA-Developers Urges OnePlus to Comply with GPLv2 and Release Kernel Sources
While XDA-Developers, and a large sector of its user base, have been routinely impressed by OnePlus’ commitment to supporting the developer community, we’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of kernel sources for the OnePlus 3/3T since the release of Android Nougat on December 31, 2016. [...]

Let's cut them some slack, they want it very usable before they release it, its not like they would never

I can't find anything about "cutting some slack" on the GPL license, but it's clear that they have to release the source code even if it is full of bugs.

Official ARM. Project Thread

After much practice into linux, i went for a C coding workshop for android. Basically i doubled, maybe even tripled my skill level. I finally am able to promise you something not pointless to this society which feels great hatred on me. I already got over this. I hope such releases can ease the scams in may.
The new kernel, based on ARM.'s vanilla kernel common, will be a 3.4.11 kernel. It features full tweaks to all over the source. Expect little features on initial release. The releases in the front will be focused entirely on fixing the kernel sources itself. The major merge all the way to the latest kernel version might have caused bugs to appear

Good for you. Hope it works out better this time and test thoroughly before release and after changes.
might is a understatement. It almost certainly will cause bugs to appear (the most common bug is it not booting when major changes are made to the kernel base). Also allot of the bugs from the kernel don't show symtoms they just go wrong and use a few more KB of memory or that bit restarts and causes a slight slowdown or it takes a few milliseconds longer to complete its task etc.

And now ARM Project's back?
Yes. He is fed up of this community. So, he turned over to support HTC. I give him my support for DNA. Now, i comeback to finish off what is destroyed, complete whats junk, and make it into something like a useful book into a library. Thanks xonar. I still have one last lesson. I did not learn drivers. edv, as said above, thats my motive. And, the reason why i comeback is the value of my life. You rather change an enemy into a friend rather than gaining more opposition.
nicholas for f--k sake !!! , once you have the kernel going post the topic and flatter yourself ,, you never learn do you
If this is going to turn into a flame war then I'll close it as that's not needed here but as it's posted in General, you should be here to discuss the topic. It's been explained why the other one was dropped but if nicholaschw wants to try develop something out of it let him and just ignore this thread if you don't have anything productive to add to it. This wasn't posted in Development so he's not expected to have the kernel ready to post so discussion is allowed here.

So you're involved with (kind of) non-profit organization (alike CyanogenMod), can we know who's the members of your team? AFAIK, you don't own the phone in personal. So you (might) develop those kernel alone by yourself, or how many developers in your team?
I read your ARM. Project Recruitment, and it seems no one interested, so this non-profit organization doesn't existed yet, or you already have your own internal team?

hmm, 80% of repos are forked from already good kernels from such devs like gokhanmoral, CM, garwedgess, coolya, etc.
it's like forking Diana kernel then adding a little touch.
Even your "bproj repo" is a clone from huexxx https://github.com/ARMP/bproj-black/blob/master/Makefile#L198 yet you pushed it as initial commit. I understand, maybe you're shy to fork it repo to repo.
Your Makefile on the repo shows:
export KBUILD_BUILDHOST := $(SUBARCH)
#ARCH ?= $(SUBARCH)
ARCH ?= arm
#CROSS_COMPILE ?= $(CONFIG_CROSS_COMPILE:"%"=%)
CROSS_COMPILE ?= /home/huexxx/android/arm-2010q1/bin/arm-none-linux-gnueabi-

That is not how it worked here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2558519
They said you can build it for yourself, but do not share publicly. That's why it suggests to me that permission should be gained. Not only out of courtesy and respect (as is often the case here on XDA - as well it should) but also as they explicitly came here and requested things not be shared.
The fact it is on github does not mean they want it to be shared. Github is a collaboration tool first and foremost. To say they cannot use the collaboration tool within their own team otherwise it's fair game for people disrespecting there wishes is unfair. Sure. they may now want the build to be shared publicly, and if that is the case, perhaps this thread should be locked as a duplicate and the original re-opened, but I haven't seen any official statement here yet that public sharing is now accepted.
I think perhaps we should ask @ApriliaM3 for comment as the moderator locking the last thread at PA's request

again, they shared it publicly. if they share it publicly, then whoever wants can share it. their permission is not needed. and, on top of that, since they shared it publicly, they also need to provide the kernel source. if not, then they are violating gpl.

no. they have every right to close an xda thread if they want, it it might never be opened, if they dont want. they have that right. but xda isnt the only public website. they shared it publicly, not in private, on another website. since it was shared publicly, it is public now. and anyone who grabs it has the right to reshare it. dont get me wrong, i do not use PA, nor do i want to try it. but, as a rom that is shared publicly by them, they lose the right to say that no one can share it. while it was not public, in a private testing group, they can say it. but cant say it about a publicly shared rom. this thread isnt opened by them, and shares what they share in public on a different site.

Thats just it though, they didnt share it on or to the other website. At least I cannot see anywhere on the site linked in the OP that PA shared a build. Its a quote from a G+ post (and link back) that had no builds then 5 unofficial builds added. So nothing has changed since the last lock. The site in question appears to have done the same as the OP of the last thread which was locked.

that is also a possibility. if that site shared it without permission, than these builds are still public, unfortunately. whoever is the spokesperson for pa will have to take care of it. they can also ask a mod to remove it from here, then a mod will decide if its appropriate to remove or leave(most likely they would remove it). but it is up to them to ask to remove it.
All OP has to do is just point to the Google plus community group page and tell us to download the betas through there. I'm sure they allow linking to their community page at least.

I can't either. You know, they had planned to release something last weekend but the host of their gerrit went down so they couldn't. Do you guys really want a release of PA without Hybrid? without PIE? without Halo?. I mean, they'll give it to us anyways but frankly I don't see the point. Why not use one of the 100 other ROMS with the same features in each while you wait? I mean just look at the ROMS out for hammerhead right now, they're all remarkably similar. Granted if you look at that feature list of the "beta" there are a few standout features but other than that why do you guys want a ROM that won't have what makes PA unique? You've waited 1.5+ months you can't wait a little longer? lol.

No not at all..
I looked also and didn't see any.
You could make a build yourself and cherry pick those things but don't be surprised if it won't boot or if it does you get lots of bugs.
The stripped PA is only while it's in beta. From what I understand, hybrid still has an issue with DPI right now and they're working on combining halo and pie. Plus the hosting issues with their gerrit. I don't think normal PA builds will be too far behind the betas. At least hopefully.
Just check out their gerrit. A crap load got merged on the 18th now that they're back up and there's some cool stuff up for review too. ParanoidOTA, Knock Knock to sleep, battery light, something about voiceplus. Who knows what will and won't get merged but the PA guys are hard at work. They recently switched up their hosting too so now that that's all taken care of, the ball is finally rolling.

All the sweet features like halo and hybrid have been broken by kitkat. That's why they haven't released anything official yet.

They may have been broken by KitKat I have no clue. But PA themselves said that they have build a brand new clean base for 4.4 and are building off of that. So they are making sure everything works great with the new base then the features will be added. I've been using PA 4.0 since that site posted the beta and I can say its fast and smooth just like stock and the immersive mode is great.

You guys also need to understand that the petition won't do any good as no one can enforce it as the company is safe behind China's laws.
The only way you will make a difference is maybe a petition to stop buying their devices until they start following the gpl like everyone else.

@thejoker has got the main point.
The next best phone at 220$ is moto g which dropped 20$ after mi 3 release.
Except that the only choice is Asus zenfone
The cheapest SD 800 phone is nexus 5. Which still costs almost 500$
A used one costs 400$
This is the only device we can get and let's see what happens. It takes a few secs for sign up.
What's there to loose?

That's a useless try you're doing, petition won't help you in any way, they'll release Mi3's source code when they'll feel to do so
Mi2/Mi2s got their code released few months after when their next flagship Mi3 got released all we can do is being patient.

We made this forum to allow the users to get together and help change the company. Trust me if they don't change their ways when it comes to the gpl then the forum may NOT be staying.
It is not when they feel like it. There are laws to follow.

I agree..... There are tons of ppl who have been waiting for this and thanks to XDA....there are unofficial builds of Roms
Also due to this more ppl might buy it...
There was a fan meet in Bangalore with Hugo Barra......I missed it or else I would have requested him the reason and to release source code

I too agree with you buddy but as it's Chinese firm they are safe because of their law structure, can't force the Govt to change the law for a single firm.

hehe me too wanted but I live in New Delhi so had no choice and as per the reason the source code for Mi3 will be released when Mi4 will get enough limelight, source code for Mi2/Mi2s were released few months after the launch of Mi3, we can just wait for them to do so
And Hugo himself said in an Interview that source code will be released by the end of this year
Having my fingers crossed on his words:angel:

That's why we made this forum. So the users could get together and help change them. They will have to change a few things before they can think about releasing the device in many parts of the world. At first HTC and Samsung were doing the same thing. The users rallied and now they release it right away.
If they don't change then this forum will be a failure and be removed.

Yes. Without XDA there were no devs ready to even make a unofficial ports.
Only thanks to it there are 3 Roms ....
.see we have nothing to loose to try
But after meeting them yesterday and after explanation came to know that Xiaomi looses most of its users to aosp and the only profits they get from cloud and other software services will be gone.
Once again xiaomi is not a hardware oriented company like Samsung etc

It doesn't matter if they are or not. They are required by law to release it upon device release.
No big surprise they lose most to aosp not a lot of trust for a closed sourced distro that one day had nothing and then the next had enough capital to start a company. Makes me wonder if other rumors are true.

Good news! Kernel will be released soon!

Ah, kernel source code will be released soon...!!!!
What do you think, guys!?

Not receiving push notifications is fatal... I think too
Probably an optimization for the game, but it's not necessary.
However, I like the hardware very much.
Fastboot ROM source code will probably not be released as it is.

Let's laugh... Hah-hahha‍
Kernel will not be released, at least for while you're alive.
I'm hating all of this so much, a simple file, they have to upload a single file, and after 26-27 days nothing to be seen. This is not the only issue, there is another one with the same answer. It is as if air came out of thei mouths
Im trying to ask myself why still they haven't upload the kernel source yet? There's so much hardware potential on the phone being hold back just waiting to get unleashed .
Hoping they'll released it this year together with others 865 devices
i contacted them, the same Jason answered me :

We will if you stop thinking that way but instead you can comment on that github page coz the devs are replying there. Demand that we really need them to release the souces. You should get what's your $ worth and it might become your most worth it buy when they decided to release it

This is an LOL! If the LEADERS STRATEGY is to increase the sales, then releasing the kernel sources will definitely attracts more users because of the phone's development potential will increase by 10 folds.

I see. Thanks for doing that. Hmmm this is frustrating and disappointing. I wish there's a link where someone can truly help us report them coz its hard to think I'll be spending my months with a closed source device. It's fine if they're consistent on the security patches and ota s, but thats not been the case. I'd be willing to take a 3rd of my money back as a refund FAK I WILL NOT BUY ANY BLACKSHARK PHONE AGAIN EVER.
The question here is whether there is a person named Jason.
I also contacted Global Support twice, and Jason took care of it all.
Only distrust remains.
Took it to Xiaomi's github aswell, let's see if we can get an answer.
Blackshark 2/3/3s/3pro Kernel source · Issue #2191 · MiCode/Xiaomi_Kernel_OpenSource
Will the kernel source for the Xiaomi Blackshark 3 be released soon? I did some research about promises from Blackshark/Xiaomi and i'm really worried! Sources for Blackshark 2 were promised but NEV...

Yes really good
Kernel! Kernel! Kernel! Custom Roms! Ahhhhhh! Kill me pls
I'm not sure but back on those days of Android 2.3.4, I used to successfully crossed ports official OEM firmwares from other devices with similar CPU/GPU. All that it need back then was a custom recovery of the port's recipient and a backup of the firmware we trying to port. I stopped playing around with my phones these passed few years, so I'm wondering if we could do that as well to the recent Android versions? I believed we have similar SOC/Android versions phones that's currently active in development. We already got custom recovery anyways.
